You are correct. A few years ago I was much thinner and there is a big difference.

I'm not sure if it's just my imagination, but sometimes it seems like strangers are nicer to me than when I was overweight. I also feel like I get stared at more often, which I'm not sure is perk because I don't know why they're staring.

Nothing wrong with brisk walking. I think at about 5K race I run in they have a separate walking competition too, so keep that in mind if you ever get the itch to compete.

For me, running has become a bit of an addiction. I truly feel it if I miss a run day (typically Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturdays), and the feeling after a run is truly magical! I'm sure you get the same thing after a long brisk walk.

And assuming DW gives me the green light, I'll be competing in my first 10K next month! I am already signed up for one in July. Longer term, thinking about the timing for a half marathon, and my tentative target is December 2015 (Tucson, AZ).

I'm going to keep adding things as I remember them.
I also am now able to snack in public without getting the judgmental stares from strangers!
@Mitch: I still don't run but I can walk briskly on the treadmill for hours. Short sprints are manageable but I'm not one for long distances.

LAURASDAD, you brought up some great points on the benefits of healthy living and hitting weight goals. Here's a few more from me:

- Running. For 54 years, I HATED running (well maybe not as a baby, but long enough!). Now I love it! And in the 3+ years I have been running, I've learned a lot about the sport, what works, and how it makes me feel better and keeps my weight in check.

- Overall energy level. Prior to my weight loss, I could be a slug and sit around for hours. Now, my body doesn't allow that! It wants to be moving!

- Airplanes. I have cited on numerous occasions one of my big "ah ha" moments of being stuck in a center seat on a flight from St. Lucia to Atlanta for 5 hours and being totally miserable! Why? I weighed 287 pounds then! That was back in 2007, and while it took me 4+ more years to start making a real impact, that moment was the catalyst for where I am today. And while I still don't like sitting in center seats, I could do so and be as comfortable as anyone can be in that seat. My preferred seat is on the aisle, and the nice part is that I don't have to get up anytime one of my seat mates wants to get by!

The balance came after the weight loss.
I think when I started I was using what is called a bath SHEET. Don't know if that's bigger than a beach towel but it sounds like it emoticon

Congrats; sounds like you have a good sense of balance too. I could weigh zero pounds and still be unable to ride a bike. Balance issues all my life, alas.

Now as for that towel - our local gym has "towel service" giving out small towels for locker room use. The skinny athletic guys (and one presumes, the girls) can wrap those around their bodies.

For me, doing so remains the unrequited goal. I need a beach towel... good for you!

As I approach two years of maintaining my weight, I've been thinking about how life has changed. Some of the changes are obvious - smaller clothes, more energy, etc...- but what I've been more aware of recently is the smaller victories like:
Being able to tie my sneakers without sitting down or leaning on something to help me balance.
Being able to wash the bottom of my feet in the shower, again without leaning or sitting.
Being able to reach every part of my body in the shower - even that spot in the middle of your back that usually gets the insatiable itch.
Finding that a smaller towel now goes around your whole body.

I'm sure I will notice more as I get used to this body. Anyone else care to share?
