Thanks for the suggestions PLMITCH. I am hoping to get into running after a long absence and having been using an app called 10K Runner that moves the walker into running a 5 K and then a 10K in 13 weeks.

I see you are a Fitbit user as well. Hope you don't mind if I add you to my Fitbit friends. Always great to have something to aspire towards.

ANDYINBC, I have tried a variety of iPhone apps. For race training purposes, I am using the Jeff Galloway easy 5k / 10k apps. I recently got a FitBit and am using it for step tracking, etc. Much easier to use...

To your first question...I don't have apps but my daughter uses one for tracking and such that I guess I shouldn't mention by name on here since it competes with Spark.

I did send in my submission to be a team leader which generated an auto response saying if I didn't hear from a team leader in 3 days I would automatically become a team leader - that was two weeks ago.

So I have no idea what's going on.

Just thought I would drop in and see what is happening with the team. I definitely understand the sentiment of being abandoned here on this team. I have been on Spark for a few years now and have found this team ages ago but found that little happens here. Would be great to have this team more active.

Question for you guys who are here...
I have started using a few apps on my iphone to keep me motivated. I have RunKeeper and Map My Run as well as 10K Runner, The WALK, and Zombies, Run. Do you have apps that keep you motivated or that you find helpful?

Laurasdad... looks like youa re ready to be the team leader here, have you contacted GWBACH, the only active team leader as asked him to add you as a leader. He will be able to do this as he has access to team settings.

Haven't heard anything more. Two of the current "leaders" haven't posted in over 1000 days, one was almost two months ago and the other was about a week.
So even though I submitted a request, I still didn't get so much as an automated response.
And I assume you're right that a leader could send out a large scale message to see who of the 4000 are still active on Spark.

Well we've got almost 4000 team members.
We should be able to get something going, but it looks like you need to be a leader to send out a team mail message, and to create challenges.

Have you heard anything else about the team leader spot being open?

Hello,

I have been using SP on and off for a long time.
With the help of SP and groups like this one I went from 300lbs to 188lbs in a year.
I have seen lots of team leaders drop off, for lots of reasons. I was even one of those team leaders that just disappeared at one point.

I'm trying to get back on track w/ tracking.
Maybe we need to get a really serious team challenge going?

I didn't read every post in this topic so maybe this was already suggested IDK?

Welcome aboard. I haven't tried Spark coaches but have relied on some of my Spark brothers to help out when the gremlins are chasing me into the pantry or fridge.
I hope to keep this team active by posting a lot more regularly than I had been.
Losing weight was easy for me, maintenance is the beast.

I haven't posted at all but have used the trackers twice now to get back on track. I welcome a place to share thoughts and ideas of how to stay on track.

My nemesis is work stress - I get consumed by work, cut corners on sleep, travel for a week then find myself having just eaten a %#@$&?!! muffin. Then I realize I have fallen into the spiral again.

A daily reminder and/or someone kicking my ass for stupid decisions would be helpful - has anyone tried the Spark coaches ?

I can only speak for myself, but I have a hard time keeping up with team forums. Usually what I do is meet new people in the team forums and add them as friends, then I end up spending most of my SP time reading updates from the friend feed instead of visiting the teams. I'm not sure how to motivate people to to participate more in teams but I hope your ideas help turn things around.

Over in 50+ Males we have a "Daily Check In" topic that is "stickyed" -- pretty much wide open, though we seem to migrate to weather conditions, etc.

I get on every day, lead three teams, but sadly there only so many hours in a day, and that is after work, exercise, meals, family, etc.

As far as why people in general, come and go, I concur with all of the reasons listed.

Maybe one idea is to create some new focused discussions -- e.g..success stories, etc..maybe that'll generate / regenerate some interest. After I tend to my other teams, I'll see if I can come up with a new topic or two.

People seemed to get a lot out of my blogging documentation of my 60 lbs loss during my first year or so here. I just lack the time to keep that pace of communication up.

I guess I'm not looking at what "works" but rather at building community.
Possibly a contributing factor in people falling off the wagon is indeed the silence within the men's community which leads some to believe that they are alone in their struggle, weak or otherwise unworthy of support from our brothers.
Even if some do move on to other weight loss techniques that work better, that's something that could be share also. Why not let everyone know that you're doing well?
Your post seems to focus on what folks can get OUT of Spark, I'm looking to have people focus on what they can GIVE BACK to the Spark community - even if it is just a word of encouragement.

It's always been my concern that SP has been geared more for women. The daily Spark Exercise tips are almost all geared toward women. I wonder if it's because women are more active/vocal/self conscious about weight loss? Not saying that men aren't equally concerned with their own physical well-being, but perhaps because of some machismo thing, they don't talk about it as much.

4% of all Sparkies are male, if that. We simply are outnumbered.

That said, here are the reasons for silence, in decreasing order of my personal opinion:

1. Spark teams do not work. One's weight, whether (hopefully) losing or not, is a personal affair in the final analysis.

2. Spark takes time to do it right. Nutrition tracking, done properly, can be a huge time suck. Important as it is, it does not pay the bills in and of itself.

3. People fall of the wagon and give up.

4. People move on to other weight loss / management techniques and sites.

5. After awhile, one learns what the site has to teach, and its application becomes reflexive. One needs to be here less, to reap the rewards.

I'm here for a lifetime. I've been a group leader, a motivator, a loser of a bunch of weight, a gainer-back of a little of it, etc. That does not mean that I'm always diligently tracking, but the education here has made me much more conscious of my food choices, both quality and quantity. And being here is, a big time suck (look at ALL my blogs...).

Hope this helps put things in a little perspective, at least for me.

Greetings brothers...
A couple of days ago when I logged into Spark, I received a message that this group was looking for a new team leader because of the inactivity of the current leaders. I thought about it for a couple of days and decided to throw my hat in the ring. After submitting my request, I received a message saying I would hear back in three days.
Over a week later...nothing.
This led me to look at our current leaders and only one of the four them has been active within the last seven weeks (as far as a status update at least).
The message boards here would also seem to bear out that we are not availing ourselves of the help that fellowship can bring. I've been around a while and it saddens me that so many men have just disappeared from Spark all together. Maybe they've achieved their goals and moved on but, based on my experience with weight loss, it is probably more likely they slipped and haven't recovered - we all know the yo-yo syndrome.
So men, I am looking to Spark (ha ha) some interest in this group and maybe get some regular interaction going.
I invite everyone to share your latest triumph and/or tragedy or reach out to a brother you haven't heard from in a while and see if you can lend a helping hand.
We've all tried doing this alone and we know how that usually ends...
