TX Patricia - I do prep most of my own food. I stopped eating *most* processed foods about 2 years ago, including diet sodas (that was a shock to my system!). I bake/grill/cook my own chicken or turkey on the weekends to have for sandwiches or salads, it tastes better to me! I only eat out 1 or 2 times a week at most. I split everything I order or ask the waiter to put half in a to go box. I do order what I want when I go out, since it really is just once, I also plan on uber healthy meals the rest of the day, and I want something I cannot make myself! I learned to cook at an early age, we all had to help out in the kitchen and I so did not get fat because no one in the fam knew how to cook! So I read lots of cookbooks, like all the weight watchers ones, trim and terrific, cooking light, fine cooking, etc. to get ideas and recipes. If I am going to make it on the weeknights, it has to be able to be done in under 30 mins.

My nutrition plan is pretty simple. Eat right. And there will be more food available later if I am still hungry. Eat at least 9 servings of fruits and veg a day (my am smoothie helps), keep fruits and veg around for snacks, eat often and small. When I started this whole baby step thing (2 yrs before joining SP), I started with a smoothie every morning. It is my 'restart' every day and it was the way that I could get something healthy in me every day. One good decision. Every morning. No excuses. That turned into me wanting to be healthy at least one more meal a day. So I made over my lunches. I could have my cheetos, after I ate my veg and if I was still hungry. I know, I am such a kid, but the deal with myself has worked! I also use that throughout the day, water, fruits and veg first, water, then the nuts, cheese, pretzels, or popcorn. I eat when I am hungry and try very hard to not let myself get hungry or starving. Dinners have not been such a problem, since I fix most myself, I do have to measure out my fats and more calorie dense foods (cheese for example), but aside from that, I cook pretty healthy, with all the food groups. I also try to get in lots of colors throughout the day! If I find myself at a fast food joint (normally on car trips) I order the kids meal. I can always get something else if I am still hungry. Probably more than you wanted, but there it is.

The power to change, the courage to do, the will and drive to be exceptional lies within me, and by leaving my fears, my doubts, and my excuses behind, I embrace all that lies within me.

What is your nutrition strategy for your weight loss? Do you prepare most of your own meals, etc.?

UCantakethesky - I like the rewards too! And honestly, I probably would get them anyway, so now I just have to earn them! Well, in another 44 weeks I get my way high-end designer shoes (salivating thinking about them, jimmy choo, louboutin) IF I earn them by working out every week! I guess I have not thought that far ahead, but since I love to travel, I think a trip to Bora Bora or Hawaii would be the penultimate way to celebrate all the weight off! Other than that, the reward will also be able to purchase MUCH cheaper individual health insurance because I will be healthy!

The power to change, the courage to do, the will and drive to be exceptional lies within me, and by leaving my fears, my doubts, and my excuses behind, I embrace all that lies within me.

I like your method of rewarding yourself along the way. Do you have a bigger reward you're aiming for when you reach your final weight loss goal, or do you think that's something you'll decide when you get there?

** Amy - I see that you have a number of passions that I do: for travel, reading, your job, and your dogs! Do you also have a passion for exercise? (that's one of my goals!) What is your 30 minute fitness program like? Do you do a variety of types of exercises? What are your favorites, when and where do you exercise?

Nope, I loathe exercise. I don't like to sweat. I have asthma, so that makes things interesting sometimes. And I live in the very windy and dusty desert. So I have a treadmill, an elliptical (which is broken and i need to see about fixing it), and workout dvds. I also own some light weights - 3lbs to 8lbs. My fave exercise/activity is the elliptical. However, I am finding out I like both Leslie Sansone and Denise Austin, they are a mindless program to do at 5 am in the morning. I exercise at home at 5 am 5 days a week, this is time I made, I gave up an hour of sleep to do this, and its not so bad. I am going to have to admit that I am no longer dreading the getting up to sweat and feel better for it. Activity I like, exercise is a four letter word! I try to switch it up, yesterday I did a dvd, today treadmill, tomorrow a different dvd, thursday back to treadmill, etc, I figure I need to keep my muscles guessing as to what I am going to do next. I get in strength training in small increments 3 times a week. I am finding simple exercises to do at work (leg lifts in my chair), rocking up on the balls of my feet, wall pushups, etc. things that are easy to do in small time frames. I would like to try and do more strength training, and that will come.

Oh yes, I have always been overweight. Since I was 4. I think the last normal pic of me was when I was 3. I tried slim fast in high school, not a great idea, I tried WW in college, did not work out, I was not in right mind frame, it did not work when you constantly ate the free food, etc, and then I tried nutri system, lost a bit, hated the food, quit that (thank goodness!).
Probably in college I felt my healthiest (until now!). I went to the University of Arizona and not only was the campus huge (loads of walking), there was so much to do, with the mountains and the gorgeous weather! On reflection, had I known more about nutrition, I would have been thin by the time I graduated. However, even with lots of activity, putting in all that unhealthy food into me did me no favors! So now I am getting back to that feeling and that energy level! And right now I really am trying to be the healthiest I can be at this present moment.

The power to change, the courage to do, the will and drive to be exceptional lies within me, and by leaving my fears, my doubts, and my excuses behind, I embrace all that lies within me.

How did you find SparkPeople? I think I saw an article on yahoo or aol about a year ago. Then this year, I wanted to start tracking calories along with eating healthier, so I googled, and said, yup, this is for me!

How did you choose your SparkPeople ID? I was so creative, first initial, part of my last name, and fave number combo!

What are your weight loss goals? I want to be healthy. I need to lost over 100 lbs, but I will get there!

What was your breaking moment, that made you say, you have to loose weight or else?
When I looked at myself in a bridesmaid dress at my bff's wedding. Wow. I have always been way overweight since a kid, but through college and law school, I had stayed about the same, yo-yo diets not included, but I finally started just gaining, so it was time. Other than that, just knowing that I need to be healthy if I want the life that I do!

Where would I travel to? And why? Oh gosh. Everywhere! I so wanted to go to Egypt (that's on hold for a few years now!) Costa Rica has been on my mind for a few years and I have friends in Brasil that I would love to visit! But my dream trip, the one that even now I have a savings account dedicated to? At least a month in Australia and New Zealand. One of my law school profs was from New Zealand and he and his wife have promised to show me around when I get to visit! I am not sure why Australia, except that in my Europe travels, the most fun people to hang with (as a single traveler) were the Aussies! Too many fond memories.

Fave author and why? This is another hard one. T.S. Eliot has been a favorite author of mine since high school. His writings have always touched and inspired me in ways that others have not and I just got him. Little Gidding is my all time fave poem of his! Nora Roberts is one of my fave contemporary authors. Always good for a I want to read something, but not get too deep into thoughts. And a favorite classical author? This is a toss up between Alexandre Dumas and Mark Twain. I can always re-read any of their writings and still feel enriched and taken away to a different time.

OK, this is getting long, but the pups? Calvin and Bunny are both old dogs that have passed these last few years :(. Sam and Tiger are foster dogs that we had and now my sister has! The other ones, Clyde, Cooper, and Charlene are the three current dogs. Clyde is going to be 11 in a few weeks! He is still pretty spry for his age, although the new puppies helped him get that feeling back! He got a bit depressed when we lost both Bunny (old age) and then Calvin (cancer) in the same year. Luckily, we have very dear friends who occasionally breed and that's how we got Cooper and Charlene! They are from the same litter and are now 16 months old! Charlene was born with a cleft lip and her original owner nursed her through those perilous first days (goats milk is a savior!) and cooper was the runt of the pack. Not anymore. His paws are the size of a tea saucer! Charlene is still a petit little firecracker! We have a great vet who performed surgery on her lip (it was actually necessary because of how her teeth were coming in) and has made the cleft lip almost unnoticable! Cooper is an absolutely perfect dog and I should be showing him, but have no spare time. Let's see, Charlene acts like a queen, since she was born, she has just known she was special. My grandma calls her a fur missile. She always had to do things on her own, even as a tiny thing. She was one of 5 and the only girl. Her brothers would be playing and she would sleep, until her brothers went to sleep, then she would play! You can go here http://www.ustream.tv/channel/adobespaniel
s and http://www.ustream.tv/channel/clydesmom to see old videos of them when they were little! Cooper has the sweetest disposition. He will just lay and let Charlene chew on him occasionally swatting at her with his big paw. Clyde thinks of both the puppies as his charges and has taken to teaching them their manners! He loves Charlene and tolerates Cooper.
