We have the debit card system too. I am not one to use it. The two debit cards I had, I had nothing but problems with. The first one I was afraid to use because I was afraid that I would forget to deduct the amount in my register. When I finally "needed" to use it a year later, the card wouldn't work. Back then they charged for the cards and I was not willing to pay for my "second" card.

The card I had with another account, just would not accept the password and I got tired of fooling with it.

I'd rather write a check or use the credit card. I have a credit card that I pay off every month.

This has been a long struggle, where I did real well the first couple of years and then slowly ended up gaining most of the weight back.

Canada is pretty much anti cheque
we have debit, and its not like stateside, its not a credit card, its issued by the bank, and its directly connected to your chequeing account
if you have the money you can buy, if you don't you can't

It's interesting how things work differently elsewhere. You always think that with a big company like ours, things are run the very same way all over.

Some stores already got rid of the self checks because of all the fraud that is going on.

This has been a long struggle, where I did real well the first couple of years and then slowly ended up gaining most of the weight back.

Our self check out cashier watches 4 self check outs in addition to helping customers who run into problems, handle checks, etc. It is impossible to do it all 100%.

This has been a long struggle, where I did real well the first couple of years and then slowly ended up gaining most of the weight back.

our store has them and we have a cashier that watches everyone scan and has a duplicate screen, so she watches there as well

Luckily, we don't have self checkouts. I think I'd be crazy by now if we did; I know what kind of trouble they cause other APCs in my area!
Don't get me wrong, I love using them myself, but there's just sooo much that can and does go wrong with them (theft wise).
I agree with it affecting the myshare. I tell them that too. How taking that item (whether it's $5 or $500) ultimately affects my 2-year-old. And it's like a slap in the face to my 450 associates!
I'm pretty passionate about it...lol

Last night I added a welcome comment on a couple of Sparkpages of new ladies that signed up but didn't post here, that I am aware of. I also send a Sparkmail to another member who had a private page. I am hoping that that may help.

Do you have self check outs in your store? We catch quite a few people who try to get away with not scanning all of their merchandise. It's quite interesting and it keeps amazing me the guts some people have.

Would they still do it if they found out that they are hurting the small associate more than the giant company? It does affect our bonus.

Do be honest I don't mind work related topics. We all work for the same company and all deal with the same types of customers, employees, etc. And for so many of us we spend almost as much time at work as we do at home.

Work can be a high factor to consider in our weightloss journey. If you have a bad day a work it can very easily drive you to the comfort food binge when you get home.

Hectic work schedules can make you sometimes grab the wrong foods because you want something fast because you don't have time to make sure you eat the right things.

This is a support group and if venting about work helps than so be it.

I can send out SparkMail along with anything I post that warrants a reply (ie game, activity, challenge).

I think people that are signed up to receive notifications of new posts will get double mail, but of well. At least the people that don't get mail for very new post will know that there is something new then.

It amazes me how slow it is at times too. I think it's better than it was at one time, but still has a long ways to go.

I try to search and search the net for ideas and suggestions on ideas, but can only do so many with just a few people.

I agree, we're a Walmart team, so talking about work related stuff is going to happen a lot on this board. I think it's something that no matter where we are in out healthy living journey, we can always discuss and converse about.

I have no suggestion. Crystal started a lot of topics and I can't believe the lack of interest either. Sometimes we get more feedback when we talk about work. When you check earlier posts, you will see that I tried my best to be very active here to keep this group alive, but everybody abandoned me.

Crystal, some team leaders send a Sparkmail to every member when they start a new game or some other activity in addition to posting it here. Maybe that will work.

Some members may have quit Walmart and are not interested in this group anymore I guess or they have fallen off the wagon. I wish I knew the answer.

This has been a long struggle, where I did real well the first couple of years and then slowly ended up gaining most of the weight back.

Just thought I would post a quick comment.

This isn't a very active team, is there anything we can do to make it a little more lively? I may get one maybe two emails a week telling me that a new topic has been posted.

Thats the great thing about having my own office. I have a drawer where I keep a couple oranges or protein bars. I can snack on that and drink water while I review video.. and there sure has been plenty of that to do lately!!! ugh.

Speaking of having plenty to do lately. I just wanted to say sorry I haven't been on as much as I'd like to lately. I've had family visiting and we've went to visit family on and off for the last month or so. I try to get on and at least read posts. Now I'll have to catch up and reply some too!

Long time ago when I was a cashier, it seemed to be easier to finish my water bottle. Now it seems each time I want to take a drink a customer will show up that needs my attention. I just tell them, "You just caught me hitting the bottle (smile) how can I help you?" That's when I get a smile back.

Many times though my cart is so full of freight, papers, trash, etc that my water bottle gets burried underneath. Out of sight, out of mind, hmmm ....

We are close to the army post and a lot of soldiers just came back from Iraq. Can you imagine how busy we've been? My hands and arms are hurting again .... stupid arthritis.

Have a great weekend.

This has been a long struggle, where I did real well the first couple of years and then slowly ended up gaining most of the weight back.

guess as a cashier, it's easy to have my water under the scale... I fill it first thing and have a goal to have to refill it during my lunch break and have it emptied by the end of the shift.

When I am very busy at work, I forget to drink water also. I always bring it to work with lots of ice cubes though. I make sure that I drink a lot of water during my breaks instead of coffee or pop.

Hi folks, just wanted to say a quick hello. Hope everyone is feeling better! I didn't get my water quota yesterday. I was busy. I stocked electronics, stationary, zoned them up and went to grocery and helped zone there. So, I didn't get much water. Our store bonused and we will be open 1 year on March 5th. I am also going back to full time now that my elbow has healed enough to handle all the repition. I just don't know how to get enough water in me! O'well I will just keep trying I guess. Ok, I must get ready for work now and you all have a good day filled with love and light. emoticon

Glad you're feeling better! Make sure you give your body plenty of time to rest before you head back to the gym since you've been sick. If you're not 100%, just walk on the treadmill or around a track until you are.

happy New Year's everyone, It is late I know, but I have been sick. I am sick more often since working for WMT but it is retail, sick customer's, employees and germy money so it is to be expected. And they want to put in health centers-lol Have a great day and hope your feeling better KARILEE1. The customer's did seem a little grouchy but "tis the season". Ok, I am exaggerating: they were really grouchy.

Hi! I am a cashier and I see it too. The customers can be really...( what's a word that means less than pleasant??? ) emoticon

I haven't been at work for over a week because I got the flu ( really bad ) and bronchitis on top of it. I was in bed for 5 days in a row ...sleeping forever. I hate being sick but who likes it right?
I really love my job and my store. I hope to get back to work on Wednesday. That is when the doctor cleared me to return.
I hope everyone is having a great day!
I tossed all my bedding into the washer on HOT. I am getting rid of all those germs one way or another.
Does anyone else seem to get sick easier or more often since working at Walmart?
My immune system is weak so that doesn't help me.
Take care and thanks for the space to share!

Kimmie,
we have been busy too. Have your customers been as grouchy as ours were?

I had a customer that swore up and down that I had a sign on the bunk bed display for $30 cheaper than it sold for. I told her that I never had a sign up there and pointed to the label below the boxes and the bottom bed even had a shelf label stuck to it. We did not get around to labeling the other two boxes. She claimed that I took the sign off just before she came back there to check the price again. I hate it when people claim I am lying. I'll be the first one to give them an override when I make a mistake. That customer was snoddy and made a lot of fuss and the CSM gave her the override just to get her out of there. It still made me angry because I have to sign that override on Monday and give an explanation on why it was done.

The economy is bad, people don't want to spend much but they still want the things they want, only cheaper. We had a few incidences like that where a customer ripped some associates another one.

Another problem is that not all Christmas items went on clearance. Our store manager does not like to spend money and getting mark down money from him is like pulling teeth or maybe worse.

This has been a long struggle, where I did real well the first couple of years and then slowly ended up gaining most of the weight back.

Happy New Years Everyone. I hope that 2009 will be prosperous, healthy and happy for you.

My husband went to bed already. He worked outside all day and did not feel well. Today is one of the few times where I wished I was in Germany. We always got dressed in costumes on New Year's Eve (like you do for Halloween) and people play little tricks on each other at parties, like whoopy cushions, fake bugs in ice cubes, sneezing powder, stink bombs, etc. At midnight people will shoot fireworks to bring in the new year. It is also customary to eat jelly filled donuts and a lot of times the hostess will have a couple filled with mustard. The bakeries are actually selling them New years eve and you can't tell the difference from the outside.

If I manage to stay up until midnight, I'll open up my bottle of sparkling cider and drink it by myself.

Sabine

WOLFGIRL, you've got to do what is best for you. Your elbow problems sound very painful.

We don't sell beer in our store anymore. We have never sold wine or liquor in our store. I think working as a cashier overnight is more interesting and easier to do than during the day.

This has been a long struggle, where I did real well the first couple of years and then slowly ended up gaining most of the weight back.

Hi Bienke, I will stay on overnight (less booze sales) lol. I will just stock and zone the front checkouts and seasonal. I would prefer to continue to do instock but my doctor says I need to get out of it because if I have to have both tendons on my elbow re located I will lose 50% of the use of my arm emoticon So in order to stay employed I am in survival mode. It will be a big change though.

I wish you a happy and healthy and successful 2009.

WOLFGIRL will you be working as an overnight cashier or will you switch shifts? I worked as a cashier for about 6 months a few years ago and didn't not really care for it. Customers sometimes get really nasty at the register. The worst ones were the Walmart associates from other stores.

This has been a long struggle, where I did real well the first couple of years and then slowly ended up gaining most of the weight back.

emoticon Christmas is over. I walked in at 10pm, Dec 26th and all the Valentines stuff was on part of the seasonal isle....I guess they did that the day before Christmas. Had to fill the holes-lol, the store was is great shape though except for grocery. We didn't work the GM side because grocery had 1800 pieces and 5 people. The upside I finally am getting training as a cashier and hopefully do that permanently in the next few weeks. Maybe I can go back to full time and let my elbow fully heal. Here is to a Happy 2009! Stay healthy.

Our store looked pretty good and I only had a few things to zone. I expected worse. My stocker and I worked a few features, picked and binned merchandise. Of course not all Christmas items have been reduced 50% and we had to print signs to let customers know which items were not part of the sale. I don't understand why Home Office is doing that. Anyway, I was glad when I got to go at 6:30.

My husband told me it was crazy in the store during the day with all the returns and the bargain shoppers. I am glad that I missed all that.

I am hoping we don't get any trucks. As far as I know it is just the regular shift working with one assistant and one support. They were saying that on Christmas eve after closing the whole store would be zoned but my gut feeling is that is not true. I am taking an energy drink with me the next couple of nights-lol and not going to get frustrated or anything like that. No stress here. Have a good night and don't work too hard. emoticon

For me tonight will be cleaning up, condensing all the Christmas items, maybe moving them to another spot and flagging them. After that I will help stock the new and old freight.

I am working tonight to. I imagine we will be cleaning out the warehouse and getting ready for the biggest return day.....I wish all shifts at our store would zone--they are supposed to but it hasn't happened yet. I am thinking about asking to go to days and work in HBA just to keep it zoned, not stuffed and not plugged. Hope your Christmas was a joy.

Parttimers get holiday pay also, but it will be less because they work fewer hours. Your holiday pay is based on your average hours worked during the past 3 (?) weeks prior to the holiday.

Toys has always been a disaster. At our store all shifts have to zone. When we do "all hands on deck" in the afternoon, half of our people go to the grocery side and the other half go to toys, hba and any other area that needs extra help for an hour. We all hate doing it but I guess it helps out the store overall. The customers appreciate a cleaner look, that is for sure.

Our store is still going by the old system where we have department managers and we have to do our own pricing and mods. All the new stores and the few converted stores have mermchandise supervisors and they are supposed to have pricing and mod teams. The new backroom program is here to stay as far as I know. We have three BIT shifts but the overnight shift still seems to be doing their own thing. I am finding so many mistakes in my bins that I wished they would leave them alone and let me do them.

I hope you all are enjoying your Christmas and have had a merry one. I get to work overnight tonight but had a great time last night when we celebrated.

Do part time people get holiday pay? The new receiving and backroom thing according to my store mgr was a pilot program and we were the first to try it. In this district anyway. So far it seems to be working and of course it is an overnight team (ICS).

Like overnight instock doesnt have enough to deal with-lol I am hoping to get on the mod change/price change team. I will go back to full time for that. I think that is a pilot program to. The MS's during the day have alot on their plate and hopefully this will releive it. By the way does 2nd shift do any zoning at your stores--ours always looks like a train wreck--especially toys and HBA. Well Y'all have safe holidays and dont work to hard. emoticon

First of all, if you work 40 hours and they put you down for 8 hrs holiday, that is not overtime. You get paid your regular 40 hours that you worked plus 8 hours holiday pay which is the same rate as your regular pay. This money comes out of a different fund than yopur regular worked hours and therefore is treated differently.

In the 12 years I have been with the company I had issues with my paycheck maybe twice, if that often. I carry a calendar (size of a checkbook) in my pocket and check the time clock almost daily. I make sure that the hours I worked the previous days were correct. If you can't remember jot down the times you clock in and out. If there is a problem, correct it right away, before they finalize payroll. I don't trust anybody and anything when it comes to my hard labor.

seems I am back to the battle of pay, this weeks check is 8 hours short.... we are on no ot right now, so with the fact they already put in 8 hours for Thursday, IF they leave it be, I will be at 48, wonder how they are going to make 8 hours go bye bye????

we now DO have a personel person, last time I was shorted 40 hours and it took 3 months to get it straightened out, but than again, they also payed me cash when I was short 2 full weeks hours, and than put it in the next check.... is payroll at your store so messed up????

JINXMOM,
congratulation on making Dept Mgr. In our store we have one for Dept 1 and another one for Dept 82.

All of us had to work this weekend, so I am pretty pooped already. Three more days of work and then I can celebrate Christmas only to go in Christmas day and work overnight.

Our shifts are still M-F 7-4 and I hope it will stay this way for a very very long time.

Here in Northern New Jersey, the word spreading is that a couple of the Spring Valley NY employees were playing start to open the doors and than close them again, whipping the crowd into a frenzy, I pray that this did NOT happen!!!
I was lucky, I worked 1:30-10:30 on black friday, started as Dept manager of 1& 82 the following sat... man so much new to learn!!! BUT it is great working days 4 days a week, we have to close 1 weekend day a week in our store, other than our foods manger, who refuses to do any other than M-F open... not my problem, other than I get stuck with her returns when I have enough w/ holiday candy.... oh well.... looks like transfering in the late spring at this point, we got the Ct. job, or I should say my husband did...

Hope you all are doing okay out there in the stores. I know how busy it is right now for you. Obviously, with all the shoppers out there I am drowning in complaints right now...but that's okay. I am about to get caught up for a while...I may get a little down time and then they will all start pouring in again after Christmas. (FYI - I answer the letters).

Take care everyone!

SPIKEENIX,
welcome to our group. You are right, those people were stupid. I just don't get it that they always want to blame the stores when something happens.

I am so worn out already and Christmas is not even here yet.

What happened in New York is unexcusable. I guess we, who work at a Supercenter, are at an advantage here. Customers can come in at any time and they do.

By 4 AM a lot of them had their carts filled with Blitz itmes already except for the items they had to pick up at the Site to Store, Photolab and Electronics. Especially at Site to Store the lines were loooong. We ended up linerushing there and walk customers with their chosen electronics to the registers up front because some of them did not have a line anymore.

This has been a long struggle, where I did real well the first couple of years and then slowly ended up gaining most of the weight back.

I did not have to work the Blitz so I was fortunate. But it has been crazy in our deli the last week or so. I heard about what happened at a walmart in new york. That was so sad. No Sale is worth that. People there for the sale should be appalled and ashamed of themselves. Nothing is worth that. andrea

How did all of you survive the Blitz?

I had to be in at 4 in the morning and people were filling their carts already. One customer grabbed me right away as I came into the store from the backroom and I had to help her find the items on her shopping list. OK, I can live with that. What I can't understand is when parents drag their little children into the store at that time.

My store has seen a significant change in the backroom since we've been on the new program. Our outs counts have dropped by several hundred overall for the store too. I think it's a great system, though there are still glitches (as with any new program) that will have to be worked through.

Yes, we are getting 10% off on groceries here too for the next 7 weeks.

Personally, I feel we should have gotten 10% off of groceries all along. Quite a few people are disappointed though, that we are not getting that extra 10% off of one item. A lot of them had planned to buy a large item for Christmas. I wonder if the company knew that.

This has been a long struggle, where I did real well the first couple of years and then slowly ended up gaining most of the weight back.

So are all of the stores doing the 10% off of everything until January 1? Our store is letting us have a discount even on the groceries and deli foods.

My store has started the new backroom system about 2 weeks ago. I still haven't learned anything about it because I am the Deli Lead and we dont have to use the system. I would still like to learn it though just in case I get another position.

This new program is almost exactly like Targets. I used to work for Targets before I started at Wal-Mart and I worked in the backroom and this is how they did it. Only it was easier.

What is your new receiving program?

This has been a long struggle, where I did real well the first couple of years and then slowly ended up gaining most of the weight back.

We are switching to the new backroom program. My arms are still sore from auditing bins for a whole shift yesterday. Too bad that doesn't count as exercise.

Does the program really work and bring down the inventory? Any input?

Anybody else working the holiday? I'm working the 4th and the weekend. We live in an area where a lot of people come up to camp in the surrounding areas, so we get all those people in the store besides the usual holiday and first of the month crowd. I just hope it all goes smoothly, and I think for once we'll actually have enough coverage in our department.

Whether you are working or not, hope your 4th is safe and happy!

My name is Shari; I have been a Sparker since July 2006, I am now in hospice care for metastatic breast cancer, but I'm not letting cancer stop me from Sparking!

Congratulations on the bonus. We got a small one for the last quarter because they had set out sales goal so high and we just could not bring in the sales. We did well on the profit though. Hopefully, the next quarter will look better.

Wht department do you work in? Is it one of the high shrink departments?

Wow bonus O.O

Its only this year that i've worked that we started getting a bonus finally. The first year I worked here we were training managers or something and I remember them telling us we werent getting anything because of the roof or soemthing that they put in and then we had a cook out and all the assistant managers got a huge check. The second year we had a terrible inventory and again we didnt get anything eventhough some people said we should have and have no idea why. Then this year we actually have had a good inventory and woot we finally got some ^^. To bad i know we wont get one next year. My new Dept. M sux and we've already lost a lot of money do to missing things and she not paying attention.

La! Nah La!

OMG Suz, I sure hope, that they can make the pain stop finally.

I am not doing so hot this week. I may be coming down with something or I may be just plain worn out. I seem to run a slight temp at night and all I want to do is to sleep. Working freight makes my hands hurt something awfuleven though I am wearing braces most of the time. That's why you don't see much of me at the moment.

Thanks. He went to our family Dr. this morning and got brought his MRI with him. The Dr. believes that the pain DH is having now could have been a combination of minor pains over the years. Whatever DH did just brought it all in full force. I'm just glad that all 3 Dr's are up to date with what's going on.

DH will be out of commission for a while. He has 3 slipped discs, one is herniated, and an annular tear. We went to an orthopedic surgeon last week to learn what his options were. He has the option to have surgery and run the risk of living with more pain, or to wait and see if the pain ceases over time. The surgeon told him that he should not baby his back, but to do things in moderation. He needs to continue with the back and leg exercises he's given during therapy.

Hi Suz,
I hope your husband is doing better now. My first week back at work was tough. I am totally out of condition. I managed to put in my 8 hours every day but then I was totally worn out at home. I had to rest a lot instead of playing on the computer.

Take care,

Greetings! I haven't been able to spend as much time on the computer as I would have liked over the past few weeks. I've been dealing with my DH being slowed down b/c of his back, and we recently got back from visiting family. I hope to get back into gear soon!

Hello Everybody!!!!!!!!!!

I "enjoyed" an eleven-week-absence from work because of my knee surgery. Everything went well and tomorrow the working force will have me back. I understand that there are quite a few changes happening this month. I guess I will find out about it tomorrow.

Did any of you go to the "preferred" work schedule yet? I don't think I will care too much for it.

Suz,
I hope that your DH is feeling better. I used to have more back problems when I had Domestics than I do now and know how painful that can be.

My hubby is nursing a nasty cold and sometimes I just don't want to hear all that whining and moaning. He does most of that at night.

DH was out from work last week due to his back. He threw a monkey wrench into my schedule. He's making the attempt to put in a full day today. Now I'm trying to get caught up with what I wasn't able to accomplish with him being home.

Suz, sorry to hear about DH's health problems and am glad that he is doing better. You are really doing great wih your progress.

Physical therapy has helped me a lot but I still don't like it any better. Next week I'll find out how much longer I get to stay home for sure. It'll probably be another 4 weeks. I am moving around well but haven't built up the stamina yet.

Tomorrow we are supposed to get rain or snow again with temps in the 40s. I am feeling it in my bones again. I wished we would have warm days every day. I am so ready for it now.

I'd like to give a big WELCOME! to all the recent members.

This winter was a bad one for us. My DH thought he threw his back out at the beginning of the year. Turned out he had a pulled hamstring that affected the muscles in his back. Unfortunately, I was unable to spend as much time on the computer as I wanted to. Now that he's feeling better, I can get back some semblance of "normal."

Well, as you can tell I am back. My surgery on Tuesday morning went well and this afternoon they released me to go home. My hubby left to go back to the hospital and pick up my phone that I left there. He is also taking care of my prescription and should be here soon with our dinner. I took this chance to go online.

Anyway, it is amazing that I can stand on both of my feet without hurting. I also walk well with the aid of the walker. I still can't bend my knee much or lift the leg when I am sitting or laying down. The act of sitting down or standing up is still difficult and requires some help. On Monday I will start my physical therapy which will probably take 6 to 10 weeks.

It'll take me a while to catch up with all of the posts in some of my groups and I have no idea how active I will be here online in the near future.

This has been a long struggle, where I did real well the first couple of years and then slowly ended up gaining most of the weight back.

Hello everybody,
I just wanted to let you know that I'll have my surgery this coming Tuesday. I had hoped to lose more weight before this event but since I also had a birthday and anniversary that we celebrated this month, I just managed to lose the extra calories I had gained again.

Take care everybody. I wish you all the best and hope that you'll be able to lead a healthier life with SP. You will hear from me again after I return home.

Sabine, My thoughts will be with you as you have your replacement surgery.

Arthritis runs strong on both sides of my family. My mom's knuckles are enlarged due to the arthritis in her hands. I remember many times having to help her with dinner 'cause she could not grip the pans.

Suz, congratulations on your great accomplishment!!! 40 lbs is a lot and I can hardly believe the difference. I never really had taken before and after pictures. I am on few pictures because I am usually the one behind the camera. I really enjoyed looking at your pictures. What a difference!

By the way, I think the shorter hair suits you a whole lot better than the long.

I was so hyped up this morning when I got up and was able to move my arms. I knew I was going to have a great day. I don't know if I told you that I have rheumatoid arthritis in my hands that radiates up to my shoulders. I sometimes have a hard time when I have to stock items above my shoulders. I've had this since October and it's been driving me bonkers. On top of that I have degenerative arthritis in my knees and will get a knee replacement in February. I've been doing a lot of supervising since October. I prefer to be a hands-on supervisor.

Anyway, on a day like today I want to do some exercises. I have a lot of making up to do.

My DH took pictures of me Thanksgiving weekend so I could show my progress. After weeks of bugging him, he finally found the file (I was standing over him while he was looking). The photos are posted in my album. I can't believe the difference just a short time with SP has made.

What's great is that challenges don't just have to revolve around exercise. It can be as simple as staying within calorie range (for example).

A challenge sounds good.

A lot of people are already using the weight tracker and I am wondering if some of our members are not so active here because they fell off the wagon.

I think our challenge would be less intimidating if we picked something like keeping up with the servings of veggies and fruit, posting the miles we walked or rode our bike (including stationary).

We may have to send sparkmails to the members we haven't heard from for a while.

I am exercise challenged at the moment. I have been suffering from arthritis these last 4 months and sometimes being on my feet for a whole 8-hour shift is all I can handle. I'll be willing to try though because I have to get into shape before my surgery in about 7 weeks.

This has been a long struggle, where I did real well the first couple of years and then slowly ended up gaining most of the weight back.

Would anyone be interested in having challanges with this team? What about a thread to post our weight?

I have to buy some healthy snacks again. I portion out my snacks most of the time too. That's the only way to go.
