Yeah I've heard New Moon recommended by others as well. I was up in Hayward when I skied the Birkie a few years ago, but I live far from there now.

I'm most nervous about ordering boots online. Seems hard to get the sizing right. I'm a 36 but some fit OK others too big...

I love to skate ski! It is a major aerobic workout, and really works my glutes and core. A great way to make winter go by fast.
If you order online, the skis should have a range of weight. So you should be able to buy skis that will work for you at your current weight and your goal weight.
There are two online shops I would trust. New Moon in Hayward, WI and Gear west in Long Lake, MN. Both have great customer service. I'm a little slanted towards Gear West, because I live near there and I know the owner and some of their employees. They are awesome.
I would also order over the phone. That way you can chat with a live person and be able to ask your questions and get the answers so you will be comfortable with the answers.
BTW, you will need new boots and poles, specific to skating. Do not try to use your boots and poles from classic skiing.
Have fun out there this winter...and pray for snow!

Avid Nordic/Xcountry skier here. I am an advanced classical skier but am going to start learning skate skiing. I moved to a small town in the Midwest, the only sporting goods store in town does not sell or know much about skate skiing. So, my only option is to order online.

I'm in the final stage of losing weight while shopping for skis. The skis I am considering are sized by weight. The crossover point in between two sizes is 120 lbs. I am currently at 122 lbs and my goal weight is 116, which I expect to hit by New Year's.

Do I get the ski above the weight border or below???
