Hello, I've been a member of the 50 plus team for a number of years. I haven't participated in awhile but recently started a new diet through a diet clinic. I thought I would chart my process here. Hope to get to know you all.

I use flaxmeal in my oatmeal every day. I used to take fish oil tabs but I stopped a while ago, and I was thinking this morning that I would get some and start taking them again.

I worked in a job where I walked a 40000sq ft sales floor and my feet became so painful I thought I was going to have to give up my profitable job. Each step made me want to cry. I went to Vitamin World and purchased their Joint Soothers and flaxseed oil tables. I started taking 3 each three times a day. In two weeks the pain was gone and I tapered off to one each a day. Yhat was 8 years ago. When I get any type of pain in my bones I takes these at least four a day for a week and then back to my one each a day. This has worked for me

Keep on track

They're both fine, but I used to really push myself ont he treadmill, and I burned more calories. I have gained two or three pounds back because it's not the same. Of course, that is probably a big part of the reason that I developed the plantar faschitis!!

Nothing wrong with an elliptical and a stationary!

Weather can't decide what to do today, slashing pounding rain, or nice gentle breezes in the sunshine. Kind of how I feel some days, LOL.

I did try rolling my foot on a frozen water bottle, but it didn't seem to make it feel any better. I got arch supports for my shoes and I feel pretty good when I am wearing shoes.

Jumpup, funny thing is that I have high arches--apparently, that is one of the contributiong causes of the problem!

I do everything that I should, but it doesn't seem to be getting any better. I am resigned myself to using the elliptical and stationery bike indefinitely.

Well, I can appreciate anyone who has painful feet.

I have flat feet ("flexible arches") that have caused me no end of misery all my life. I wore orthopedic shoes in high school (you can imagine how well that went over) and then promptly ditched them. Now, if I don't wear the right kind of supportive shoe, I feel it for days - and barefoot has always been a challenge for me. -wonder what orthopedic shoes look like now-

The scale has been flirting with me, up a pound, down a pound. But I got my bicycle tuned up yesterday (of course it's raining today), and I'm hopeful that will get some use this season. And it's almost light enough in the morning to get a walk in before school kids start.

Everything is better about spring, summer and fall.

Barbara, have you tried physical therapy? I am a nurse and wrecked my feet while working at a hospital. I changed jobs and did a lot of PT to get my feet back in shape. I still have to be careful, but I can walk barefoot for short periods again. I was having to put my shoes on to get from the bed to the bathroom! One thing they had me do was put a golf ball in the freezer, and use it to massage the arch a couple times a day. Put the golf ball on the floor and roll your foot on it. It isn't pleasant, but it really does help. Good luck.

I was just thinking that I want a nap!! I never take naps...

Jumpup, I did see a doctor about my main problem which is the plantar faschiitis--that is why I have an issue with exercise since I am not supposed to do much walking. I definitely broke a toe, and I think that I might have stopped taping it too soon, because it is giving me some pinches, but that's all ok. Unfortunately, there is nothing the doctor can do for either issue!! "Just rest" is the only advice.

Barbara, have you see a doc about your foot? I know you think you broke your toe, but is it possible you did more than that? Go have it checked out. Do it for the 50+ Team!

Rainy here today, supposed to be a nice if slightly cool weekend - good for yardwork, I guess!

Didn't get too much done today, had a doc appt and that took up most of the day with travel and waiting and all.

Looking forward to tomorrow.

No, Frannie, not scolding, good advice! WHich is what I am doing, even though the reduced exercise has resulted in a few pounds gained. I do have access to a pool, and I just have to look into what I need to do to start using it. It does require a little bit of a drive to get there, but I think it will be worth it, if I can just get started!

Barbara, take your time and let your food heal, it is better to wait than to hurt it all over again. Scolding done! Can you swim somewhere? That might take the place of walking.

It is gorgeous here and I have a terrible cold! So unfair because it is going to get cold again. I guess it will stay warm here one day soon but we seem to get enough warm days to tease us and then it drops again. At least it is not going below freezing (well so far) but May 15th is our date of last freeze so it could drop way down yet. A week from Saturday I have a bunch of flowers coming. The high school band in my school district sells them and they are really cheap so I got a bunch of flowers. I got my moms favorites, pansies so I could plant them all over for her. I am so looking forward to getting the flowers in!

Jumpup, I was very apprehensive about going to a gym when I started. I've found that 80% or more of the people I see are there to work out, just as I am. The few that are "posers" are so obvious, and they are only paying attention to themselves, anyway!

Nancy, sounds like you had a wonderful experience! Barbara, when my daughter was little and we would drive to Grandma's for any holiday, we went past a Bally's, and we would be amazed at how many cars would be in the lot!

Now I get it.

Wonderful service at church today - baptism of our newest member, the church was full to overflowing - instead of the pastor and me as the entire procession, we had 5 young acolytes who carried, 2 crosses, a butterfly, a phoenix, and a Bible - plus the pastor and me. There were more than twice the normal congregation and about 20 more than normally on Christmas or Easter. It was wonderful. There were even a half dozen LITTLE kids and several young teen/adults as well. What joy and love there was. Brunch was served afterward and there was plenty of delicious food and company. Son Ed and I brought home JUST ENOUGH to have supper tonight without leftovers. It was really nice.

Hard to get out of bed, as usual, but I did it and went to the gym. Sunday is always interesting there--it seems as though the clientele then is generally me, a couple of older people, and lots of young men who are serious;y working out. I like it.

Barb, glad to hear that the foot and toe are feeling better.

Like everyone else, we are having the roller coaster weather ride. After temps in the upper 70s and 80s over the weekend, we watched our temps rapidly drop below freezing on Monday night with 2 3/4 inches of rain and winds of 60+ mph. It is still cool here, and they are calling for more rain tonight and tomorrow.

April has been a yoyo month for me. I haven't been feeling well, but finally figured out the problem after severe gallbladder attacks last week. As a result, I'll be having surgery in early May to take care of the problem. At least it's outpatient, so if all goes well, I should be going strong within a week. It's basically a "do what you feel like," except no heavy lifting. Since there's too much pollen to do spring cleaning now, I guess most of it will have to wait until late May or early June. I do want to get daughter's room cleaned before she comes home from college for the summer. I know the room will be full after she arrives! :-)

Barbara,

I'm glad your foot is feeling better. I use a stationary bike at home, and get a good workout by keeping the resistance lower and keeping my RPMs above 90. This gets my heart rate up without making my knees hurt. My knees "tell" me if I have the resistance set too high. Maybe this would help you feel you are getting enough of a workout on the bike while you are waiting for your toe to finish healing.

I took a chance this morning at the gym and did the elliptical, although I only did 35 minutes on it. Since I have been doing the stationery bike because of my foot issue, I just don't feel as though I am getting enough exercise! Here's hoping that I didn't stress the foot too much on the elliptical!

What a change today - cold, rainy, colder temps on the way. I was still able to get my exercise in this morning - have only missed 2 days since March 31st. This is the longest I have been able to keep up the exercise. I have a friend who started biking from California to Maine on the 31st, so I'm using her trip as my inspiration to make a serious effort at changing my exercise and eating habits. So far so good! emoticon

BLONDDOGLA, I know what you mean, I have days like that. They are usually associated with stress of some kind.

It snowed last night, we got about 1 1/2 inches, folks it is April 15th! I do not want snow or cold. It was in the 20s this morning. I am definitely not a very happy camper!

I do not know why but one day a week and this week it was yesterday do I eat and want to eat everything not on program. I ate cake that I made (I know I should not have made it) angel food cake mixed with pineapple. But if I ate just one piece it would have been ok. But I ate half of the cake. One day at a time. I think that it did not help that my husband has been sick and he is allowed home on weekends and vac but on work weeks he needs to go to work. Well today is a going to be a better day.

One day at a time. With God's help

We had a gorgeous weekend, temps in the 70s and sun shine. My hubby and I babysat Friday night and Saturday, we took a walk to a local restaurant (without coats!) for breakfast Saturday, all in all it was a wonderful weekend. Today, cold, rainy, calling for snow! Oh well, I will take the good with the bad, it should be in the 50s the rest of the week, just rainy.

Spring renewal is in the air! The windows are open for the first time and the air smells wonderful! I was able to get some of the flower beds cleaned out and gravel raked off the parts of the lawn that aren't too wet. One stubborn patch of snow should disappear today. Spring! I hope you all have a great day. emoticon

I just finished watching Capt Phillips--which I did not expect to like and thoroughly enjoyed!! Very well done and well acted. Tom Hanks was great. And as a plus, my kitty decided to drape himself on my lap and go to sleep!

Took a few days off. Not feeling on top of the world, not sick really, just fatigued.

I have dropped 5 prednisone pounds, though. Many to go, but all is possible.

Well, my nephew responded and the box was meant for me!! I broke a toe when I was visiting my daughter and he and his wife were thinking of me and decided to send the goodies!! It is so nice when "the kids" grow up to be people you like.

Barbara, we always have boxes, my younger daughter has problems with boxes when they are delivered to her apartment so she has them sent to our house. My husband just cracks up because she gets 3 or 4 boxes a week!

OK, so funny thing happened last night. About 7 pm, I looked out my front window and there was a rather large box. When I brought it in, I saw that it was from an online gourmet gift basket type place, and the return address was from my nephew and his family in Atlanta. The card said--feel better soon or something along those lines.

Now--a very nice thing, right? It is but I know it wasn't intended for me!! This has happened once before. You see, my SIL has the same name--exactly--as I do! She is my nephew's step mother. A few years ago, I got a lovely Sherri's Berries box at Mother's Day from the same nephew! Luckily, he is a generous person and he is very well to do so the money is not an issue. Just funny!

Sunday a friend is driving me down to San Francisco to visit my son, who's totally disabled. Knowing my Frank, he'll flirt relentlessly with her (never mind she's married) and totally ignore me.

It is bright and sonny here today. I have been having pain in the back of the knee that I had a total knee replacement in, in oct of last year. Went to the Dr and he thinks I am doing to much stretching and exercising on it and that it might have something to do with the veins. I am trying to take it easier today and see how it goes. Have a great day everyone.

Good morning all, Happy Wednesday! I just downloaded the new Spark People free app to my phone and it is a much better app than the old one. I haven't played with it too much but I can log in and spin for Spark Points, log food and fitness. I am not too sure what else but it seems to work well it will make it much easier for me to keep tracking. It is available for iPhones and Androids.

It is a gorgeous day here today, it is not cold and the sun is shining so I walked to work. It is just about 2 miles and takes me about 32 minutes so it is a really nice walk. I haven't gotten to walk much this winter because of the cold, ice and snow but the last couple of weeks I started walking to work a bit again and walking the dog every day after work. He loves it too! We are supposed to have a few more really nice days and then it gets chilly again but I will take whatever I can get.

Did the gym this morning, then an errand or two and home for coffee and oatmeal.

I decided not to tape my toe today and see how it goes. I can feel a little soreness, but I think it is ok.

Having a good day today - started with meditation and a healthy breakfast, day at school has been good so far and overall I plan for it to be a spectacular day - plan to get to the pool after school for several hours to add icing to the cake of this lovely day.

Hi all, hope you are having a good day. It is not sunny today but it is also not cold so I will take it! Blonddogla, glad you got to see your son, they are such a blessing, also glad your hip and knee are feeling better!

So, how is everyone doing overall? Let us know what your challenges, triumphs and snags are, that is the purpose of the team. We all struggle with these healthy lifestyle choices for sure, otherwise we would not be here. I know that after I brought my mom to live with me I lost all focus and gained back most of the weight I lost. The stress of having her living with me (she was not an easy person to live with much as I loved her) and dealing with her cancer really did a number on my lifestyle changes and I reverted to old habits. I will always be so glad she came and so happy that I got to share the last 2 years of her life. I have never regretted any of it and I do believe that she got a bit more time because she lived with me. I just wish I had known in the beginning what I know now, I might have been better able to deal with the stress. Hindsight is always 20/20 isn't it!?!

I think by sharing these kind of stories we can help others avoid our own pitfalls.

Nancy and Lady Irish, I am so sorry for your losses, I haven't lost a child and I cannot imagine it.

We might actually have temps close to 70 one day this week. It has been a very long time since that has happened. It was a lovely weekend, not to warm but at least not cold. I walked the dog, went to watch my granddaughter at swimming lessons and bought bird feed. I am looking for plants that birds like because my husband loves watching the birds in the yard. He turns 60 in 3 weeks! He is not handling it very well. Especially since he lost his job and is very challenged in finding another one. We keep telling him to watch for the places that have lots of us older people, and try those places. He totally needs a new resume too. He is clueless on a computer so I am going to have to fix it for him.

I finally went to the gym--first time in 2 weeks. I was gentle with myself so I feel fine.

Unfortunately, not having my own kitchen for over a week had an effect--last night I made half a roast chicken, roast cauliflower, baking powder biscuits and chocolate cake!!! I need to take my own advice and get that cake into the freezer.....

I'm tired and cranky today. I've been trying for almost three weeks to get my apartment management to fix a big crack in my living room wall. They keep saying they're coming, then they never do.

This is a perfect day to get some yard work in - if the yard weren't quite so wet, LOL. I picked up downed branches and peeked at the little growy things. I don't know why I am so anxious to get out there with a rake - I know it just hurts my back!

Time for some back strengtheners, I guess.

Momk I agree with Barbra ask them very nice and explain what you are doing. If they do not respect your decision then through it in the trash because I could not resist. Knowing me I would eat it all then figure that I blew it so go all out.

Today is another rainy day helping paint at my church twice then getting a ride on the recumbent bike and clean house. Can not wait for sun .

Have a great day all

If they don't listen to you when you ask them not to do this, the only thing is to resist. If you are strong enough (I never was), throw it in the garbage immediately!!

Any suggestions for how to handle loved ones sabatoging my efforts to make better food choices? My hubby brought home ice cream last night (which I ignored successfully) and a cinnamon bun to my office this morning (didn't resist that one quite as well, but only ate half - so far).

Got home tonight and my luscious dinner was impossible - power outage - roast chicken and lots of veggies turned into a late-night grilled cheese sandwich because while oven didn't work gas stove - top did.

NancyPat, bad, bad!!

Well, I got home from my trip last night. The house was pretty cold but I got all cozy under the blanket. This morning, the house was still cold and getting up was tough!! I am still tired form the trip, but I think a good night tonight will help. It is actually colder here than it is in VA where I was visiting my daughter!

Got my towelbar ups in this morning and some steps at the clinic.

Time to really knuckle down on the food intake. I realize I've been "pampering" myself with food, yet another prednisone side effect, Well, time to stop that nonsense. I have a "cousins reunion" coming up in a couple months - right now I look like a puffer-fish because of the meds, but doesn't mean I can't do what I can do to look my best.

So there's the deadline, now to get serious about it.

Today here it is freezing rain. The roads are warm enough that it is not freezing on them. But the trees are covered in ice. I got in a great workout anyhow. Got out the dvd of the ferm 500 cal. burn and it does kick butt. Have a great day

One day at a time. With God's help

It's sunny but cool today, perfect day for walking to work. I tried a new exercise ball workout this morning, and realized part way through that my ball needs to be inflated more! I thought I was just being extra klutzy!

It was supposed to rain all day today and it is supposed to rain all day tomorrow. Today we had temps in the 70s and not a drop of rain. Who knows what tomorrow will be like - but so far 3 days of 70 degree temps so far this week - it could just be a record.

A sunny day after some days of hard rain. Sadly I was stuck in the office all day.

Beautiful day! Got a little bit of yard work in - not nearly enough! Winter came on so quick that there's LOTS to do. Must remember to stretch it out before and after.

Happy April Fools Day - my darling son Ed is in for a surprise when he tries to do the word search that I brought home for him - none of the words are actually in the grid - a friend gave it to her class and they really got frustrated before they realized that. Can't wait to see his reaction.
