I am thankful that we now at least have open lines of communication, even though it is very tentative on my side--I do not want to upset the applecart!!

Barbara, I am sorry that it is so difficult with your daughter. Daughters are supposed to be special people and I know how hurtful it is when they don't follow the script. At least you are in good contact with her! That will go far. And it seems like your son makes up a lot of the difference, so that's good.

I still haven't gotten the regular video chat thing going, but at least I get lots of pictures and texts and an occasional phone call,

Time for leg lifts and Tai Chi walking! Maybe I'll get around to that 3rd move today. Healing a little more each day. Thank you, Jesus.

Let's all move to February!

I am a very long way away from even considering suggesting that I move close to my daughter but since my grandson was born, our relationship is definitely better. She has been very good about sending me photos and video, and we have established a weekly video chat ( which I made sure happened but it was tough going). I will take what I can get, since before there was nothing..

I think today is the day we make it over the freezing mark, of course there is more snow in the forecast, the best kind, sleet into snow!

Things with daughter aren't quite that bad, I just think it's funny that whenever I mention moving closer, and I think 30 minutes is at the edge of too close, lol, I get this stone wall. I know some of it is because she is having the time of her life with her family - for the longest time, it was just me and her, so I respect her need for autonomy. And I know she misses her family. But a lot of it is fear of the reaction of the 'other mother', I think. She is possessive and jealous in subtle ways and would make their lives more miserable. Oh well. As long as we keep open lines of communication, I try not to think of how quick those g'kids are growing up and how much I am missing out on.

Got my leg lifts in yesterday, about to start first set now, but I wanted to check in first.

Every day I am a little more healed, although I am having some hormonal problems from my pituitary gland, nothing to be too worried about, I think. Mostly I have 'fire hydrant' syndrome - my term - can't get enough to drink, gotta go alla time! Controlled with meds, but harsh meds, so I am trying to not take too much.

We DID have a heat wave - it got up to 32 degrees this afternoon - already it has dropped to 20 but tomorrow they are saying we might get ABOVE 32 - it REALLY felt like spring today - LOL and it never even got above freezing.

Well, it is nasty and overcast, although all we have had is a tiny litle drizzle for a few minutes. It isn't that cold, just unpleasant. I actually started out this morning to walk to my doctor's appointment and got about a half block and turned around and came home to get the car!! I was afraid it might start to rain on me. And I was supposed to go out tonight but I just don't feel it so I am going to cocoon and read my book instead.

Nancypat, they are actually talking about 34 degrees here! I am not sure I am ready for that kind of heat. The wind chill was above 0 this morning, it was 8. The temp was 21. Woo Hoo!!! Of course they are now calling for more snow today and again Saturday but if it above 0 I don't care.

Jumpup, I have the reverse issue, my kids will never leave Chicago so as much as I want to relocate to warmer climes I won't as long as they live here. I hope you are able to open communication with your daughter so you can move closer. It is hard to understand, I always wanted my mom to live close, not necessarily with me but closer. I always found that 2 - 4 hours away was the perfect distance. Not so close that it could become and issue but close enough so that visiting was easier. My parents lived 30 minutes away at one point and actually that was not bad. When we moved to Chicago (totally my husband's fault BTW) we were 8 hours away and that was just too far. We visited but it was not an easy thing to arrange. I am glad you are doing better and getting out and about a bit. Thinking of you and hoping for better days ahead!

NancyPat, how are you doing?

Dixon, thanks for the return to earth - I skipped laundry yesterday, LOL! Still have clean undies, so why not.

But I did get out into the cold sunshine yesterday, felt so good to interact with people! Thanks to my BIL who has been providing chauffering and other services while I can't really drive myself yet. and here's hoping I'll be able to soon.

Did my 3 sets of leg lifts yesterday - got started on today's. It is garbage night, so even if I can't get the cans to the curb, I do need to take out the trash. Fortunately, it will be in the 20s here today too, with more sun.

All in all, I think I'm doing quite well, disappointed that my vision didn't spring back, but it may take time. Seem to be tolerating the prednisone better this time, and home nurse has graduated me to doing my own infusions, so she won't be back until next week to change a dressing and draw some blood. Actually, this could be over ANY time now.

Again, I send a text to my daughter saying, what am I doing in this deep freeze when my grandchildren are in Phoenix! Again, deafening silence. LOL! They have been toying with moving home, but I think hearing about winter is changing their minds - I know it would mine.

Barbara, we have very good friends who live outside of Phoenix and he loves to let us know what the temp is there!

It actually got up to 21 here today! I felt like I was in the tropics.

Aww, Barbara, don't rub it in, LOL!

I am hoping to get out a little bit today, the sun is shining even though it's only a degree or two out there. I feel like I am healing from the surgery well, don't know if the meds for the disease are really kicked in yet or not. But I have got cabin fever!!!! Besides I need to pick up a few things at the store.

One set of leg lifts in. Must do some laundry, so although I am not supposed to do anything strenuous yet, I will be doing a few stairs.

Stay warm or cool, according to your climate!

Hi Mjkiro and KSC003, welcome, I am glad you joined our little chat. KSC003, I lived in New Orleans for many years, I am so unhappy up here in Chicago, it is just too cold!

Barbara, when I make pot roast I add a couple of tbls of tomato paste and some good red wine. I always brown the roast and then use those drippings to mix in the paste and wine.

Jumpup, hope you feel better soon and good for you on the leg lifts.

Barbara, I started putting a small can of low sodium V8 in my pot roasts. Very good - until I realized I was no longer getting that 'pot roast' taste. Time to go back and reread recipes to figure out what I'm forgetting to do!

One of my neighbors was so kind enough to plow my sidewalk and driveway for me yesterday! I suspect I know who it was, but I'm not sure. I think I'll make a loaf of whole wheat banana yeast bread for them today. The bananas got, shall we say ripe, while I was in the hospital and if I don't use them today, they are gone. Three birds with one stone! Scratch the itch, get rid of the bananas and not have to eat the calories! Wins, all around!

One set of leg lifts in, more to go.

I made a pot roast yesterday in the slow cooker. Had some for lunch today which was pretty good. It needs something, though, so I will experiment the next time I make it.

Frannie, glad to hear it's not more serious than it is! a virus, good grief. Well, take your time to recover.

I am still stuck in the house by recuperation and snow/cold. The snow patterns here are so different than at my old place - high drifts, swept away spots. Now I remember why my dad bought the enormous snow blower. Too bad my brother took it.

Did one set of leg lifts, waiting for nurse to show up, bored out of my mind!!! Can only sleep so much, you know? And I don't want to eat more than I should, although a good baking project might scratch an itch.

Maybe I'll make some Apple Barley pudding. I found this recipe, made it once. Very good, but I have some changes in mind - today might be the day to try it. Very easy to do, if you don't mind peeling apples. Somedays, I just don't have the patience, lol!

More leg lifts anyone?

My grandmother used to do the most beautiful needlepoint, she taught me but is has been years since I did anything with it. I used to love counted cross stitch too. As for chewing gum, that was something we were not allowed to do. My mom said we looked like cows chewing cud so I just never developed a taste for it. I do use it for flying though also. It does help with popping ears.

The ENT said that it is most likely the virus, it will take a few weeks to clear up but it will go away. He also said to stop the Valium even though it helps a bit it will prolong the time it takes to recover. So I am just going to be dizzy for a 3 or 4 weeks, not like that is any different than normal!! Anyway, he said in a week or so I should begin to feel much better and by 2 or 3 weeks it will hardly be noticeable. It is becoming my new normal. It is a bit better, I do not feel like I am falling down, I am just dizzy. As long as it is going to go away I am okay. School is canceled because of cold again tomorrow and will probably be on Tuesday also, it will give me a couple more days to improve!

I hope that you are all surviving the snowy, cold weather that is being dumped on us this winter. It is supposed to get as cold as -19 on Tuesday morning. Stay warm ladies.

A nice needlework project would be great. Sadly, with my vision the way it is, I can't do it. I used to do quite a bit of sewing and I miss it, so I am a little jealous, Barbara!

We have been dumped back in the snow box today - there must be 8 new inches out there. I can't get out to shovel it, so all I can do is sit in the house and watch the neighbors - you'd think one of them would take pity on my and clear mine, too. Oh well, They are almost all older than I am, so they probably think I should be doing theirs! Ha ha ha!

Discovered I can use the sink as a barre and do some careful leg lifts - at least it's something!

I am finishing one needlework project now and have several more planned so that is starting to be some distraction for me. I also bought some gum--I have never been much at chewing gum but a couple of years ago I was having an ear issue and had to fly so I bought gum for takeoff and landing. I just got some and have been chewing it to take the edge off at night.

Thanks for the kind words, all. I just have to wait out some healing time and I'll be back in the game. Hope the rest of you are ok, Frannie what did ENT say?

Patty, the best I can tell you has already been said! Distract your mind while you retrain it to think of how to fuel your body with good things! Good luck, when you figure out how to do that, we'll go into business together, LOLOL!

To all my fellow 50 + Females
I wish you all well, we have a lot of downs going on this month. Prayerfully next month will be better. To Franniedid, I pray that your vertigo will resolve soon, I can only imagine how hard it is to walk around all the time and everything around you is spinning. Good luck at the ENT.

Patty, I too suffer from constant food thoughts. I try to stay busy on the computer or by reading. I find that watching TV too much also makes me think of food a lot (I think because most commercials on TV are about food). I hope that you keep trying to stay focused on your goal and with time you will be able to control this. emoticon

Jumpup. My prayers go out to you

Jumpup, I am so sorry to read that. I hope they come up with a good treatment plan for you. Please keep us posted!

Patty, I find I need to keep busy, and not just mindless busy. I try to find things that require a lot of concentration so that I can't think of other things. Sewing does that for me but it is different for everyone.

Barbara, I hope you find someone to fill out your game soon. You are right, Mah Jongg with just 3 is not as much fun.

I am going to see an ENT doctor tomorrow, hopefully he can help. I am at work today and working on the computer keeps me dizzy constantly. Unfortunately 90 % of what I do is on a computer!

So I find that I'm thinking more about food now that I'm tracking than I ever have before - and not in a good way. I seem to be hungry all the time. Any distraction suggestions?

Well, I never made it home from my doc appt, last week. He admitted me to the hospital. Just got home last night.

Had a mass on my pituitary gland that had gotten larger quickly and was affecting my vision so they biopsied it. We did this in August, too, but it was inconclusive. This time it was more serious and more invasive, but at least I got a diagnosis out of it. I have, ta-da, an extremely rare autoimmune disease of the pituitary, I have to learn to spell it. Oddly enough, the treatment that worked on 5 of the 9 people they studied that have it is super high doses of steroids. Exactly what I've been taking for a year now. So I feel like crap.

And I'll be out of the game for a while. But I'll still cheer you guys on, and do what I can.

Sounds like it's been a rough week for everyone. Frannie, I am sorry you are still so ill! And Barbara, it's breaking up that old gang o' mine time, huh? So sorry! And all the rest who are sneezing and coughing and just having a miserable January - it's almost over!

Go Team!

Yesterday was just gorgeous out. I went to a friend's so that we could see if we could find somewhere to get another person for mah jongg!! My mah jongg game has lost two of the five people--old age and moving--and it isn't fun to play with 3. No luck, but we put up a note on a senior center bulletin board and maybe someone will read it.

ugh, Frannie, that just sounds like a royal pain in the behind! I hope you get better quick.

Another day of bitterly cold temps here, and now it's snowing! Has been snowing since about 4:30AM. It was actually pretty when I took the dog outside this morning at 5:45AM, everything was so fresh...no footsteps, no tire tracks...ours were the first, but not so pretty when the dog wanted to play in it instead of getting her business done quickly! LOL@

Hope everyone has a Terrific Thursday!!

Hi all, hope you are all doing well.

Tricia, I hope you and hubby are feeling better soon!

I am still fighting this darn virus, now it is affecting my inner ear. I have a low buzzing (sounds like cicadas) and this terrible vertigo that comes and goes. I saw the Dr. yesterday and she gave me prednizone for inflammation and valium for the vertigo. It seems to be helping a little, I am hoping that is not just wishful thinking on my part. I can hardly walk across a room without just reeling. If it doesn't get better she is going to send me to and ENT. 3 weeks for a virus is just a pain! And to add insult to injury I am still coughing, not as bad though. I can't do anything, have not been to work for a week, can't exercise for fear I will fall down. Any type of sharp movement brings on waves of dizziness. At least I can't go out much, it is below 0 here again and going to stay that way for several more days. Good times!

Tricia hope you and your hubby get better quick! This has been the craziest weather all over the US. I'm in Cleveland and it's been going from highs of 40's to highs in the teens....bitter, bitter cold at night...it wears on you after a while.....

I've only watch BL a couple times this season but never really noticed the PF ads. I signed up at PF too late but apparently some gyms across the nation are running a BL type challenge...not totally sure but I think the winner gets tickets to the season finale. I wanted to watch last night since it was makeover week but totally forgot...luckily we have on demand tv or I can catch it online...

Have a great day everyone!

This is starting as the worst week. My husband has the flu then of course I had to start feeling crappy too. Went to the dr and he gave me antibiotics to catch it before it gets bad. So our poor son has 2 sick parents and is hiding in his room. Using lots of Lysol every time I get up off the couch. We are quarantined apart- hubby in bedroom, me in living room. I'm praying I feel up to go going to my friend's daughter's funeral tomorrow. This crazy weather here in Arkansas is not helping, warm one day, cold the next. I haven't been to the gym in 2 weeks and my food is terrible.

Hi all! Just wanted to check in...with the era of smartphones and APPs, I'm so bad at actually getting on a computer and checking in here. In reading all the previous posts, I hope everyone is feeling better and having a good start to the new year....I lost a little focus at the holiday's, as I'm sure everyone did, but pushed through it and lost the weight I gained as I didn't let that derail me as in times past. I joined Planet Fitness last week, which is the change that I needed. We only have a treadmil at home and having the flexability to switch things up has helped be a lot the last few days. On my treadmill days, I work out at home and go to PF for elliptical, bike and ARC trainer and stregnth!

Hope everyone has a good week!

Went for a wonderful walk in the early AM. It was great to get outside and breathe some fresh air.

Woke up this morning with a migraine. Haven't had one in several months. I figure it is from stress about my friend's daughter and my Mom. Took some meds and went back to bed for several hours. It helped some but have felt crappy all day. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day.

Barbara, Tricia, I am hoping for a better week for both of you!

Still sick, this thing is just wearing me down. Everyone I've talked to that has had it has been sick for 3 or 4 weeks. Our HS Registrar (who I blame for this) was doing so much better and then was out again Friday. I am doing absolutely nothing this weekend and just trying to get over this. I am so tired of coughing!

Very long day today. Still waiting on word about my friends daughter. They've moved her to Hospice and keeping her comfortable.. So that has been on my mind all day today. Then we had to drive 2 hours to get to a basketball game of my son's. We lost so that was disappointing and then long drive back.

Then I get call my Mom is sick . Hoping it's just a virus. So this has been a very hard day for me. Going to bed soon.

I've been playing mah jongg every week for the last 2 1/2 years with a woman who just turned 93, one who is now 89 and one who is 74 and another who is 73. Unfortunately, the 93 year old had to "retire" and give up her car. She was getting far too forgetful. The next oldest is moving cross country in a few weeks with her daughter. So our game is probably ending. I'm sad about that.

Tricia, I am so very sorry to hear that, I will keep them in my thoughts and prayers.

Berry4 I do love the quote. I lived in a very small town in MO and a few of my favorite people were some elderly ladies who were in their 80s and 90s. We all swore that there was something in the water, these ladies were so active and with it! Of course, they changed the water supply to a big reservoir so us younger ladies could not benefit! I loved those ladies, they were awesome.

Dixonfamily7, thanks, I am home from work today, I just have to get over this cold!

I had a very sad night. My good friend has a handicapped daughter who went into respiratory distress and has to get a tracheotomy. Now she's is having seizures and they are having to make the decision to take her off the ventilator and let her pass away quietly. Her quality of life is over and she will never live without a ventilator. She is 19 yrs old. Please keep them in your prayers please.

I was looking for one quote and found a great one:
You are who you will be 5 years from now, except for the people you meet and the books you read.
I sure did like it. emoticon

-- Today, I met some AMAZING ladies! Two of them were over 90 years old and you would NEVER know it! One of them made 22 (yes that # is correct) quilts over the Christmas break! She & her husband are both veterans and they take quilts to veterans and spend time talking with them. She is 92 years old.

Gave me "food for thought" for how to LIVE for the future!

Thanks BGUMBA, it has been 2 weeks so far. The registrar at our HS had it for 3 weeks, I keep telling her it is her fault, I came down with it about 5 days after she did. I am still so sick, the cough is awful. I came home early today, I finished all the things that had a deadline so felt like I could take it easy for a day or two. I will probably stay home tomorrow too. I am okay until about 1:00 and then I am just beat. It is a really bad one!

I always tease the kids about charging to store at Mom and Pop's Mini-Warehouse!

As far as HS stuff, I moved my mom out of her house about 5 1/2 years ago, she still had my brothers HS graduation stuff, he never looked at it again! I packed up the box and mailed it to him, he was 50!

Welcome,Tricia and Maggie.

Tricia, having your son away can be a good thing. My younger daughter is in her second year of college about 45 miles from home. Last year she didn't spend much time at home and stayed on campus during the summer, although she is doing better this year. I missed having her around, but I was glad that she was happy at school. This year we are seeing a lot more of her--I think she needed the time to settle in and feel independent. Now I think she has decided it's good to spend some time with her parents occasionally. :-)

I still have things of my older daughter's stored here, and she had been married for almost 16 years! She has told me I can throw everything away, but I really think those old high school and college memories may mean something one day. We have taken some of the boxes to her during the last few years, since they now have lots of storage space in their house (probably because they aren't packrats like we are!)

Frannie, I hope you're feel better soon. If you have the "cold" that is spreading through our area, it may take a month or more to get over it. Hubbie and I are still coughing and sneezing after two weeks. One of our friends told us it took him at least a month to get over feeling so tired.

I'm off to see if I can get a few things done before hubbie gets home. He has a 4 day weekend, so I won't be doing any of my projects again until Tuesday.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

My daughter packed up her room years ago, but the boxes have been sitting in there ever since! A few years ago I pushed as many as would fit into the closet, but there is still a pile in one corner of the room. My has a lot of his stuff in his room that he doesn't have room for in his apartment, and doesn't really need any way. But I could move things around in either room pretty easily if I ever really got to it.

When my daughter moved out, I told her two things: I would store anything she wanted for as long as necessary (wasn't all that much) and that she would always have a place to stay with me if she needed it.

My compromise on her bedroom, which I turned into my sewing, reading room until it became a storage room, was to put a futon in there that folds up to a couch. She actually slept in it once.

Now, I don't really have to worry about it, the few times they have come home, they have stayed at HIS mother's place. (bigger rooms, bigger yard) And there would be no living with her if they stayed with me, LOL.

Got a brief walk in this morning, will get more steps in at doc appt this afternoon. In the meantime, I am doing stairs while I do laundry.

Good morning all! Hope you all are having a great week.

Been reading all the posts and man, I sure can relate.
My kids are all out and have families, but the baby... 26.. and his family live in the other side of the duplex we bought. I works out great cuz the grandkids are so close.. Funny enough though, we can go days without even seeing them.
My girls live states away, that stinks, but we see each other as often as possible and me and my grandson text constantly.

I have 1 lb to lose until I reach my January goal of 10 lbs.. Iknow I have a couple of weeks to lose it, but man it seems as if it is taking forever.. LOL I'll get there though, i'm sure. It's just that I am impatient.. ha!!

Barbara, it is a really big step to re-purpose your child's room, I have had awhile to think about it. My son was very insulted, but I asked him if he planned on using it again and he admitted that he had no plans to do so. After a minute he laughed at himself and said he would help me clean it out (most of the things he did not have room for in his apartment still live with me!). He has so much of his childhood stuff, I am not at all sure what I am going to do with it. I have always joked about my Mom and Pop's storage facility because I have so much of their stuff.

Tricia what is Mochet? I have never heard of it. Google here I come!

Thanks for advice & encouragement ladies. I know my youngest will be close by even in college so I'm sure I'll see him often. As far as the crochet, I'm not sure I'll ever be good at it but I do enjoy it. My MIL makes the most beautiful afghans for everyone and I am so envious. But she uses large wooden crochet needles and does something called "Mochet". I can't quite get the hang of it but I figure I'll just keep working on scarves till I get one that's good enough to give to someone...lol

Went to my arthritis treatment today. It's a 3 hour IV treatment that wipes me out for a day or so but then I feel so much better. Then went to spend afternoon with a good friend. Her handicapped daughter is in ICU for respiratory distress & infection. They had her on ventilator and then did a tracheotomy Sunday. Now we are praying she can be weaned off ventilator and start responding. Not looking too good. Please keep her in your prayers.

I keep thinking about making one of the kids' rooms a computer room/office but I can't quite bring myself to it, even though they are both out of the house for good.

Tricia, I love to knit, crochet, embroider but did not really have time what with working and kids. Now I am ready to start back up again. I forgot how much it can cost though, I had to get new knitting needles, I have no embroidery thread left. I had so much stuff but over the years it got lost, tossed or otherwise misplaced. My mom left me some of her knitting needles but she did not like crochet so I had to buy those. I am sewing again too, something I have not done for a long time. I am slowing making my sons old room into my craft and sewing room. then he will come back I am sure!

Maggie and Tricia - what Frannie says is dead on. You miss them, but it is nice to have the extra space.......

Barbara, get stitching! You can do it I'm sure.

weights and sink ups are in. Too cold to go out (and all I want to do is sleep anyway), so I'll have to find something else for cardio today.

Maggie and Tricia, it is so hard when they first leave, but actually you can get to like it! And they often move back ladies so just when you get comfortable with your new found freedom and your new craft/sewing room or whatever, look out!

I have 3, 2 are out but the oldest, her husband and daughter live with us again. He started a business and until it starts making a healthy profit they need to live with us. He is a hard worker so I know he will do well.

Hi, Tricia ~
My 21 year-old is about to move out to an apartment and I'm having a little volcano of -- ewww -- feelings about this haha. Since I tend to eat when feelings might overwhelm me, I need to be especially mindful right now.
Cheers to all our team!
Maggie

Hello Maggie, I'm a newbie here also but already love it. Today I started a new Pilates DVD because couldn't make it to the gym. WOW 20 minutes & I was sweating it. May feel this tomorrow.
Had a basketball games tonight with my 17 yr old son playing. This is his final year of basketball and high school. Don't know where all the time has gone. He'll be in college next year staying on campus and I am going to be lost without him around. He'll only be 30miles from home and I'll see him often but he's my baby and we're pretty close. His Dad said I will be crying most of the first few months which is probably true. Guess I better start improving on my crocheting skills. I'm a beginner and not so good so far...lol Needed something to do with my hands instead of eat and also to exercise them because I have arthritis in them. Maybe practice will make it better. Let's hope so.

Wow, this is a cool team. Must be something about being (a) women and (b) past 50. Ha! I suspected that'd be a fine combination!

Today was the gym and I did manage to do everything I was supposed to!! Now I am starting to feel nervous about getting a project finished by the end of the week for my son. It's a needlepoint pillow and I might not be able to get it done. I didn't get as much done as I should have this weekend!!

Welcome MaggieBongo!

And good for you, Barbara! what kind of nutso people would disrupt a funeral for a service person with hate. Beyond me why some folks are the way they are. "why can't we all just get along?" maybe the most brilliant quote of all time.

Walk in, sinkups in, major house cleanup on the agenda for the rest of the day.

Hi,
Newbie here. I'll only be in my fifties for another year and a month, so I thought I'd better join quick!
BarbarasDiet - good for you! I was so happy when a big line of people shut them out from a funeral. I don't understand them.
Look forward to getting to know people ~
Cheers!
Maggie

The Westboro Baptist Church pickted 4 churches in a community near me. No clue why these churches were chosen or why they chose to do it in Glendale, but I stood with over a hundred people, including many in the LGBT community. If you don't know about the WBC, they are a small group--it's actually a family--from Kansas who show up at funerals of soldiers who died overseas and shout horrible, horrible things at the grieving families. They carry huge signs with hateful slogans on them about gay people. They were supposed to be going to the Golden Globes last night but I haven't heard anything about it.

Frannie, glad your basement didn't flood! So sorry you are not feeling well - don't overdo, take that rest.

Barbara, what kind of demonstration?

Handweights and one set of sinkups in, more to follow....
