Sorry, it's all up to you. It will get better if you can force yourself to follow the program. If you do it once, it is easier the next time, and so on. It's the first step that is just so hard.

I'm riding with a friend today to a city near my home. She wants to eat out. I'm still not comfortable eating out while trying to diet. I've been doing weight watchers for 7 months. I either eat too much or give in and order something with too many points. I just do so much better eating at home. I'm looking forward to going but dread the restaurant meal! Does this ever get better?

Ugh. I was not that bad yesterday and today (2 Thanksgivings) until everyone left tonight and I just had to have another piece of pie. Sigh/ Tomorrow is another day.

Ooomac, I was going back through some of the November posts and ran across yours. I think maybe I'm in about the same situation you're in. Trying to get myself back to working on my weight and healthy living, after neglecting it for a while. I went to the grocery store today and stocked up on veggies for the coming week. Now, just have to eat up those Thanksgiving leftovers...

How are you doing? I hope this is all going well for you.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I hope you all have a peaceful and pleasant day.

I have finished cooking for the most part, the turkey is in the oven and the sides are ready to be finished when the bird comes out. Pies are done and it is quiet while my kids all go to husband/girlfriend/boyfriend homes. We try and eat later so that they can all spend time with family, I just hate it when it becomes an issue. So I work around whatever the significant other's families do. It has worked out so far but we will see going forward. When the other 2 get married I suppose we will make even more adjustments.

I went to the gym this morning, but ended up with a shorter workout than usual. I think I was just too edgy about getting to making dinner!!

Well I just took the last pie out of the oven, so my contribution to the meal tomorrow is officially done. Going to be a small gathering, just me, my sister and bil. Nephew and his family will be stopping by for dessert, hence the pies.

Did get some activity in today, got my heart rate up on the stationary bike for a few minutes, did a lot of stairs. Plan to do some stretching and yoga this evening. And of course my sinkups.

Hope you are all safe in your travels, sensible in your eating and happy with the company!

Helen has settled in and we see her getting weaker, but her smile is always there, she is always peaceful, she is also alert and enjoys visiting with us all. We have had phone calls, visitors (as many as 13 at one time), and the staff have been in and out but always respectful of her needs. They have therapy dogs who visit, a grandson's wife is bringing her cat to visit, and a granddaughter is bringing her kids and her banjo and plays music so we can sing together. Our minister has been in to see her and there are several other ministers who come in daily. Something I have NEVER seen in any hospital or nursing home happened yesterday morning. Helen was sleeping when the nurse brought her meds, so she said "let her sleep, I will come back" she then checked back several times and waited until Helen woke up almost 2 hours later. They are so considerate and thoughtful. The custodian or orderly who empties the trash came back three times today (after I mentioned that the cans fill up when we have a lot of company) so he came in extra today so the cans would not get too full. I don't think there is a single person in the entire place who hasn't been thoughtful, kind, and friendly. They have a washer and dryer so we can wash her clothes there instead of taking them home with us or sending them to the laundry and risking losing them. They have a room full of snacks and even meals options for families and patients - all for FREE. They have services for various churches several times a week. They offered us a private room to have Thanksgiving dinner with 20-25 people there so Helen will be part of the celebration. I can't say enough good things about THIS VA hospital - it is amazing. Helen's room is big and we have had as many as 13 people in at the same time and all the staff did/said about it was, "let us bring in more chairs for you and you can keep them in the room in case you have more visitors another day." They made my bed for me when I stayed overnight Sat. and Sun. nights and brought me towels and a nightgown. They could not be more wonderful.

Nancy, I am so sorry your step mother has reached this place in her life, it is a hard place to come to but with hospice they can keep her comfortable and provide your family with some peace too. We had mom at home with hospice and they helped us tremendously, I was so grateful my mom's passing was peaceful. My younger brother and I were both with her when she passed.

Helen actually moved today when a bed opened up. Like you have said, I think she is grateful to allow others to pick up the burdens and not to be the ONE in charge of everything. She has led a long and productive life and is ready to rest. Since she is not in pain and is not overly scared, the end will be peaceful.

Sounds like a good decision. You are fortunate to have it available. My late BIL went into hospice care in the morning and passed in the afternoon--not that the care had anything at all to do with it, it was just time.

I kind of think that knowing the end is near after a long life and illness might be a good thing. As is palliative care. I think my mom was grateful to lay it down and have others pick up her burden. I know she was in great spirits right until the end.

Prayers are with you.

Decisions made, Helen is moving into the Palliative Care unit at the VA (not a nursing home or long-term care facility, but a short-term hospice situation) that is lovely and has gardens and places for quiet contemplation and peace - she was joking that this is a "dead end" because there is only one way people leave that unit and it isn't under their OWN steam. She does seem more accepting now that the reality and decisions are made. She also intends to live until her time on Earth is done. I am struggling but more at peace with it since she is.

Got my sinkups in, but not much else today. Kind of a dreary, chilly day. Got to my appointment, but travel time was long. Didn't sleep all that well last night, have better hopes for tonight. Sipping a nice hot cup of chammomile tea before bed.

I'm sure that the stopping and starting has a lot to do with it, but it just doesn't seem fair, somehow!!

THe house is chilly and the high is supposed to be 70, I think, but when I went outside to pick up the mail, it is just perfect in the sun. Just warm enough to be pleasant. Lovely.

Oh, Nancy, I am so sorry to hear about your stepmother. Make sure you get enough nurturing, too - you need it and we are here for you.

Barbara - ain't that the truth! I think it's got something to do with the stopping and starting.

I slept like a log last night and got up this morning to rain. But then - surprise - the rain cleared off, the sun peeked out on and off - so I got the rest of the leaves picked up, well the rest that were on the ground, anyway More rain and wind expected tonight. Could be damaging wind they say, so maybe it will take the rest of the leaves off the trees and blow them into some other neighborhood, LOL. Well, I can hope, anyway.

Sorry I have not been around much - late nights at the hospital, long days at school and pool, challenges in my world. My stepmother Helen is quite ill and in the hospital and we expect that it will be a matter of months at best and MUCH shorter - maybe even days at the worst. Lots of organs compromised, liver, kidneys, lymph nodes, white blood cell counts, breathing, fluid on her lungs, diabetes, heart, etc. Sorry I am finding it increasingly difficult to keep my smile right side up.

Hope everyone has a blessed day.

Yah, mine flares a little bit every so often too. But those braces really work. I had tennis elbow once a number of years ago and you know it took a good two years for it to completely heal.

Got the leaves all raked, just not all picked up yet. Low back said 'enough!'. And I always listen to my my low back. Tomorrow is supposed to start a few days of rain, I hope the temps don't plummet when it's over - I can't imagine how much fun picking up frozen leaves will be, LOL. And I've got one tree that isn't even down yet.

Wore my pedometer while I raked - I put in a good 3 miles.

Two sets of sink ups in, some yoga to do, a hot shower and bed!

I have tendonitis in my wrists, and it flares up occassionally--as it has in the last couple weeks. I have been wearing my brace as much as possible and it amazes me how much it does help.

Hi Frannie, hope all has been well with you. knees, hips, hands - you name the joint and ouch.

Last year I though my thumbs had really seized up with arthritis, I could hardly do anything, couldn't open a jar, or hold on well to things - I dropped things like crazy. Talked to the doc about it, he had me do a couple movements and said I had deQuervain's syndrome - basically tendonitis in my thumbs. I started wearing a brace on both hands and rigid splints at night to immobilize the base of my thumb, and you know? It has pretty much gone away! Thank God. And THAT goes on MY grateful list, you bet.

But I think my days of refinishing woodwork and doors are over, since that's what caused me to develop it in the first place. (eh, maybe I'm grateful for that, too, lol!)

Sink ups are in, must find something else to do to burn some cals - those leaves are still calling my name.

Hi ladies, long time to chat! I think knee pain is just one of the perks of getting older! I do try to exercise but somethings just hurt! I do like water aerobics but the only gym that offers it is expensive. I do need to find something more than walking though, just doesn't have the impact it used to.

I have been thinking a lot about complaining and have decided that I want to make a goal to quit complaining so much. I really don't have very much to complain about, and most of it is not very important in the overall scheme of things. I think we fall into a rut of complaining and have to make a point to stop. So, I am going to start thinking each day of what I have to be grateful for and how I can make the things I want to complain about more positive.

Barbara before I started taking a Deep Water Aqua Jog class (my absolute favorite!) I looked up water exercises on the internet and found a nice series of things to do. Also check to see if they have an arthritis class (sponsored by the Arthritis Association or Foundation or whatever the big one is called). Loosens up your whole body. Do plenty of walking in about chest high water! I'm so jealous!

I am not what you'd call a swimmer, either! At my best I could get one lap in, LOL! But I kept plugging away at it, I sure miss it.

Not feeling on top of the world today. Had shivers and chills yesterday and today. No fever, but man do my joints ache.

I did two sets of sinkups, will do one more, eat a quick dinner and take a hot shower. And hope I feel better tomorrow.

I hear you. I have knee pain that comes and goes. I have been babying them lately and did the elliptical this morning and the knee machine, and so far so good. It is one of damned if you do situations--if I exercise my knees too much, the pain comes back. If I exercise them too little, the pain comes back. I have not quite found the point of middle ground yet!

I am not a particularly strong swimmer either, but I am a consistent one and I love to be in the water. Everything I do in the water is more fun than on land - it is so much easier on my joints and muscles.

Barbara - I am so happy that you will have the opportunity to enjoy the pool. Swimming is wonderful but even if you never actually SWIM, you can exercise and walk in the water and it is easier on the joints and feels like LESS work but actually uses more energy and calories than land-based exercises too.

Got a 20 minute walk in this morning - on the snowy ice pack that arrived overnight. More snow on the way, but right now the sun is shining brightly. Definitely not warmly, though. It is bitter cold out there.

One set of sinkups in, more to follow. Doc appt this afternoon at the clinic, so I will get lots more steps in today!

I had a great day - went to visit my stepmother today - some friends from church came out also. Then, I went to the pool and spent 5 hours having fun and exercising in the water - really a good workout.

I just can't imagine "weather" any more!! It's 84 outside, although the hosue is cool.

My son came over for brunch this morning. I do my major housecleaning on Mondays so I told him to come later so I could get it done. I made a fritatta, which was a case of using what I had int he house! It was good, though and we always have enjoyable visits.

Rest days are important - listen to your body!

I'm heading out on a short walk in a few minutes, before the weather changes to rain and snow and below freezing.

I was bad this morning and skipped the gym. I really hurt after my "exercise" volunteering yesterday and I thought the rest might be better for me.

I figure the freezer is good through, oh maybe February. By then I will be ready for something different anyway.

Now I have to figure out how to get the exercise in the right way.

Upped my reps of sinkups to 15, already have two sets in. Will be walking around the Art Museum this afternoon. My sister and I are going to a Scicilian exhibit - Art Between Greece and Rome, or some such thing. Of course, we can't go to the museum without taking a tour through the whole thing, so I am looking forward to visiting some of my favorite pieces.

Jumpup, I am making a pot of chicken stock tonight, so I will have soup for dinner, and then have lots in the freezer for future use. I'm like you--I love having lots of grab and go in there!

Turned into a beautiful day! But very windy - not a good day to rake leaves, which I need to do before the neighbors show up with pitchforks and torches.

I've got windows and doors open and the wind is just sweeping through the house, bringing nice fresh, fall air with it.

I am still working on stocking up the freezer and I have a wonerful cabbage soup that I am going to make (and doctor) this afternoon. I started making it for my folks many years ago because it is low salt, no fat and full of vegetables - all kinds. But I am in the zone (just made a fabulous pot of split pea soup - best I've ever made! and a South Beach breakfast casserole that freezes in portions beautifully), so I am going to do it a little differently, by sauteeing the veggies lightly first in some olive oil and adding white beans for some protein.

Got a couple more dishes I want to get made and frozen in serving sizes, and then I will be good to go! It's this time of year. I start craving warm soups and stews, and if I make them in advance, I don't go off the rails eating every other thing trying to satisfy that craving.

And heat and eat saves time for working out! And having a freezer full of food in the winter makes me feel safe and secure. (unless the power goes out, then I am pretty steamed.)

Have a great Saturday.

I worked super hard at the gym this morning, so I feel a tad stiff, but good. Now that it has gotten dark so early, I have had a week of going out at night--which I rarely do!

Went to neurologist today. He said I can stay on this dose of prednisone for the rest of my life. oh, yay. I was really hoping to taper it off even more, but he's concerned that if we reduce it anymore, it will trigger the inflammation again and there goes my vision - again. I am still getting sharp pains behind my eye, but at least I can see straight!

such a bizarre thing.

Yah, I really like the yoga dvd I have, lots of stretching and breathing and some poses. "For extreme beginners" it says, LOL. I always feel so much better when I do it. I miss the pool, though. eventually.......

I am loving the sun in the morning, but I am with you on the early darkness. In fact, I thought I was being smart when I reset my clocks early, but now I have to go back and reset them to come on earlier than I thought I would need!

Today was the OPPOSITE of yesterday. I was short-handed and ALL the kids were present and whiny, EXCEPT the one who was absent yesterday - he had one of his best days so far. I was tired when I woke up and not really in the mood for challenges and stress. BUT I survived the day, went to a meeting, and got to the pool - stayed later than normal but got there later also. The pool time was the best part of my day and I turned the radio when I was on my way home and came across an NPR show talking about meditation and the value of positive attitudes and loving even those who are "thorns in our sides". I found it both interesting and a nice, peaceful way to end my "out of the house" part of the day.

Barb - I too wake early and find that when I don't, my days just don't go quite as smoothly.

Jumpup - I hope you get to your yoga this evening - I have only gone a few times but I really find it worth doing - even as I have to struggle a bit to do some of the poses.

Barbara, hope that your wish works! I have been getting up really early for a few months now (not by choice, really), and I have to admit, it is nice to get the stuff done!

Nancy, glad your 'agent provocatuer' managed to miss the day, LOL!

Need to get my yoga dvd in this evening.

I really like the light in the morning, but wow, do I hate it getting dark so early. Imagine how awful it would be if the shortest day came in, oh, say February - I'm afriad I would have to jump off a bridge!

Had a surprisingly pleasant day today - kids usually get really irritated and annoyed with time changes - most easily agitated student was absent today though so the day went great. Had a good pool workout and then the high school swim team came in and practiced while I was working out in the therapy pool - enjoyed watching them while I was working up a sweat in the water.

hey all! Hope everyone had a fabulous weekend! Yesterday was cold and rainy here, so I didn't get out and walk...so I just used that as my day off from exercise...did really well on my food tracking and healthy choices this weekend. It helped that we didn't have anything going on and pretty much just stayed home, cleaned and ran some errands....next weekend is going to be a bit tricky with a bunch of stuff going on...but I'm just going to have to plan well.

Cold-ish and blustery weather here today, so I doubt I will be out walking today. Honestly, the weather could calm down anytime now!
