I love telling this story. There was no Goodwill in the small town where I grew up. A very snooty small town. My brothers were both voted the best dressed boys in the school and my folks drove out of town to a Goodwill to buy their clothes. No one ever knew, except for us.

In the past I have bought a few things. Now that I am losing weight, I have been looking in the thrift shops for cloths. I am going on a cruise and I don't want to spend a lot of money on cloths that I won't be able to wear in a few months. So, before my curise in October, I am curising the thrift shops!

My DH just cleaned out his dresser & closet...I'll tell you that our local Goodwill has some fantastic men's clothing now! And I've donated all my bigger sizes. Being retired & working on decluttering, I'm not buying much of anything, but mostly donating. Out of curiosity though, I went into the Goodwill and the stuff there was really very nice and cheap.

Yard sales have provided many of my clothes, this is especially helpful as I change sizes!

I'll remind you again, check out EBAY.

I just got an expensive top with the tags on it for $3.24 + $5.95 for shipping. Not bad for under $10. DH got our last solar tube from there, too.

When I lived in San Diego there was a great Goodwill store I used to frequent. But when I moved to O.C. and had sticker shock from the Goodwill store there, I never returned.

I hit a deal yesterday. The Salvation Army has a small store like a Boutique close to me. They were having 50% sale. For under $5, I got a like new swimsuit, a pair of Izod dress shorts and a mint condition double knit shell. Now, that's Penny Pinching.

Did you know that if you sew and find a skirt or pants that fit except for the waist, you can make it work? There usually are back darts on fitted clothes. Cut the waist fabric at these spots, open the the dart and inset elastic into the waist band.

I learned my lesson about buying way too much at Goodwill, in FL. I usually buy lots of clothes to try on in the comfort of my own home or buy them for my DH or brother. One time I went in to take some clothes back. I was in a hurry so I just wanted to quickly pick up my credit slip and go. That's when I was informed that they no longer issued credit slips and it had to be an "exchange". I was stuck because I had used up the one week they gave me to return items and I didn't have time to look for any more clothes that day. I was so flustered I just left the clothes on the counter and walked out. I could have, at least, brought them home and given to my neighbor.

Thankfully, my CT Goodwill still issues credit slips.

Where live here in denmark there are 7 excellant recycling shops for me to choose from.. I have changed my wardrobe out 7 times so they have been valuable for me saving 80% of my money on clothing..
A few dollars can get me a whole set...
Even the top I wear in my avatar is a lacy workout top I found.. People travel overseas find out the clothing is not really good for denmarks cold weather- I can use it for gym wear!

yes, I buy at yard sales and thrift shops, especially while I am trying to lose weight, I can't see having a lot of money tied up in clothes when I don't intend to stay in that size. My favorite shop is called Regenerations, I also like St Vincent De Paul.

Me either Snowbird. I went to the mall with my sister one day in HER car and I said, "NEVER AGAIN"! We were there for hours on end! I was so ready to get home that I was near tears! LOL I told her next time, I'd meet her there in my car so I could make a great escape if I needed to!

I haven't done a lot of garage/yard sales much anymore since I quit buying "stuff".. but I like to go with my daughter now and then. I only shop on a basis of "need" anymore, but I will look around the thrift stores when I do go..what I call, "junkin'"..I guess it's not really junk if it's something you need though.

Sometimes, garage sales are good for clothing. I too, have seen prices at the GW that blow me away. The only way, I'd even think about spending higher amounts, if I still worked. Then consignment shops are the way to go and especially at the end of each season.

I have bought used clothing when I was losing weight and I'll tell you my local GoodWill just received another bag full of my clothing...all in great shape because that last size was only for six months. My new clothes are all retail, but everything was on sale and I had coupons, too. A year ago one of the members of my Weight Watchers meeting brought in a box of clothing...I got a whole bunch of really nice capris & jeans & a few tops...they are now at my GW...I wish the new owner well.

My nicest clothes come from Goodwill. My GWs sell any top or shorts for $3.99. I try to look for the best labels. There's no sense in buying "Faded Glory" when I can buy Colombia or Liz Clayborn. My gripe with GW is that they don't give credit slips anymore(in FL). They only let you exchange.

Floridagirl, those prices are extravagant for thrift stores. I don't understand the goodwill that I used to go to sold their jeans for $7 a pair. I still think that's too expensive for used. I found that another neighboring town had them for $4 a pair. Actually everything was cheaper at that goodwill. So, naturally we'd shop there instead. Recently my daughter came to visit and we stopped by the first GW I mentioned because they'd moved into another building and we wanted to check it out. Since moving, their prices have come down to match the less expensive store. Go figure!

If I could find new for the prices you're talking about, I'd sure buy it!

Our thrift stores have become more expensive than buying new. Seriously! I was shopping in January & someone said "let's go to Goodwill" Grrr.... $10 Rider's jeans from Walmart that were very used for $12. The tank tops were $6 & up. The Salvation Army is worse. All scrub tops for $18 that were faded! I can buy new scrubs for $3 clearance locally or non clearance for $3- $4 on the internet all day! We have some hole in the wall thrift stores but most don't carry clothing!
I shop retail clearance. Just bought a suit jacket that was $80 at Lane Bryant for $1.80 at Beall's Outlet (store in FL & GA)
I can usually pair a clearance with a coupon as well.
It is rare for me to pay more than 5% of the original price. My jacket find was 2.25%. I went back yesterday for my husbands undershirts & the price is now $0.95 for my jacket. LOL
And our local Sears is great too! $1 & $2 finds to be had in each department! Got some nice warm boots before the cold snap for $2 (retail $49.99) & Walmart after Christmas is the best! Once everyone gets store credit for all the clothes they don't want, there are $1 and $2 racks EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!! Great time for staples!
Unless I NEED something, I can't justify spending so much on clothing, and I rarely have a clothing EMERGENCY!
So, no I don't buy used, new is so much cheaper!!!!!
However, used for free, now that I can afford!

We have several thrift stores in town and I shop them all. Don't often find anything in my size, but when I do it's great. $4 jeans that I've been wearing for 3 years, etc.

I used to have to attend a lot of formal events. The dress, I got the most compliments on came from a thrift store. It's really good for the basics, black skirt, black pants. I usually get my swimsuits there, too!

I love to shop at the thrift stores for our clothes. (underwear being the only exception; not that I've seen used panties in a TS..but I have been known to wear bras handed down by relatives.) But, for clothing, I don't mind buying used. It sure beats buying new, especially with the price of everything going up these days!

That being said, I don't just "shop" for clothes like a lot of women do. I don't even like to shop. I only have a few select things at a time that I actually wear because I don't like to have clothes just hanging around in the closet and never worn.

I'll also wear a t-shirt around the house until it's bound for rag heaven because it's so holey.

How about you?
