I think If it's left as a number goal people, can still enter the step total and a team goal can be set as it was so that you combine personal and team goals

If the exercise goal is changed to read "Reached my step goal," then wouldn't it be just a "yes/no" check mark on our Other Goals page? (Instead of a number that can be entered...as it has been up to now.) I would personally not find that format helpful to me, and I'd be sad to lose the ability to have my actual steps show on the Other Goals page each day. With the current team goals, I manually enter the actual number of steps/minutes I get in each day on my "Other Goals" page and that number automatically registers here on the team page.

The way the goal is set up now, I might enter 2500 one day, 3750 another day...the number stated in the goal does not limit how many steps I get in each day, it just gives me a minimum target to reach--actual steps get reported to the team. I guess it would still work to just say "Reached my step goal" if the user option is to fill in a number instead of just checking a box.

It's also been fun to see the goal show the total number of steps we get in as a team during each month...fun to see a number above 1,000,000 steps! Gives me the incentive to help make that total number climb higher...to help the team reach and exceed its team goal. I think we can do our personal goals on our Other Goals page and have the goals here be more team-focused (which we accomplish by reaching our personal goals).

Not sure I am being clear, hope so.

I also view the "At least 10 minutes of exercise" goal as a consistency challenge rather than a quantity goal...SparkGuy promotes that, asking us every day if we did 10 minutes of exercise. The way that goal is currently set up, I can also record any number of minutes on my Other Goals page each day, not limited at all by the "10" in the goal. So as a TEAM goal, we can shoot for a total monthly number of minutes that stretches us to keep doing more minutes if we can, but also to just remain consistent in daily exercise.

think most track water elsewhere I agree that our goals have to be what we are really able to do when I write walking sideways 20 minutes in Spark it comes out as walk 30 minutes mils so have given up & just type 50 minutes chair exercise but its a combination I also feel that the way we exercise should be on the tracker for instance they mention using the step machine but I do not go to the gym too much hassle for me

If we are going with a more personal based goals then maybe something like

meet your step goal for the day

meet your aerobic exercise goal for the week (or day) It is just that some people alternate strength and aerobics

meet your strength training goal for the week (or day)

goal is to be able to walk again

Tomorrow I'll try to draw up a list of goals incorporating some of the suggestions you all have put forward - some really first-rate ideas here!

Also, I'll start working on co-leaders. Some of you have offered, and I am very appreciative.

Some of the maintenance / business of the team might include: welcoming newbies... awards for leaderboard points... tracking down information for people asking questions... and just generally keeping an eye on the discussions so nobody gets overlooked. That last may be the most important point of all...

Okay, get a good night's sleep - we're back at it tomorrow!

Good point, Deb! We have a section for Healthy Lifestyle that can include nutrition, recipes, things like that - but you're so right, this is after all the Chair EXERCISE team.

I think we're drilling it down, peeps. Goals that are exercise-based... that everyone can work on... and (you just knew I'd throw this in, lol) that helps promote camaraderie. After all, the best way we can help one another is by getting to know one another.

So: if we eliminate the Tier 1 and Tier 2 concept, and we use one of the five goals for something like "Achieve your step goal," and one for connecting with a team-mate (to be determined), what else shall we have there?

Since this is an "exercise focused" team - I personally think the team goals should be either exercise based or encouragement/team participation based. To open up more spots for goals the exercise ones can be combined - either 2500 steps or 10 min per day etc. That also opens up more opportunities for success for each member.

I didn't read through all of the replies so sorry if it repeats anything already said :)

LIBERTY_JOY, that sounds like a great way to set a goal that everyone can strive for. The best goals are the ones that will result in us stretching beyond our current abilities in the quest for improvement and continual progress, IMHO.

Love it! What do you think, peeps? M'self, I vote yes.

I wonder with the steps goal instead of the amount of 2500 or 5000 put "reach your step goal" and everyone's step goal for the week could be listed in a thread on the message board
That way those reaching 1000 or 10000 steps are all covered and we can adjust our goals as we progress
Then in place of the second step goal have a goal related to strength training?

I like the idea of two tiers- my personal goal is 8000 steps per day; I hope to increase it to 10,000 this summer.
Is there a way for the system to track the goodies? I know it can track our steps and minutes.

All of my steps are chair marching, but the Spark Activity tracker tracks them as walking and sometimes running if I move my feet fast enough and high enough. emoticon

I spend a few minutes each morning "finding" my posture muscles and moving them around before I do much else. This helps my circulation from my head to my toes. Then, I move my eyes sort of slowly in various directions to get stiffness out of them. That, and dried beet leaf supplements are helping me a lot, along with some Riboflavin, B2, with every meal.

I like the two tier idea. There are days when I feel like I can do more than others and having the option is good. I think that tracking water and freggies is done already so am not so certain about that. I haven't been tracking my food and should be and might even get back to it. I know I need to.

I would consider lying on the bed with knees bent and lifting the feet as when one marches as walking also. If you can only get your feet a few inches up then you are exercising and that is what this is all about.

"Walking" can be done sitting in a chair --- you just sit and pick your feet up and down just as if you are actually walking.....

It is all about what a person is physically able to do.

Good luck to you.....

I just joined this team a few days ago. I found it after perusing a friends wall. As far as the goals go, i think they are good. My thoughts are though that since this is a "chair exercise" group, should "walking" be considered a goal here?

Really like you list of team goals. I track my water everyday but am really bad at the nutrition tracker. My fitbit also tracks my steps and exercise. I hope those things get recorded on the team page. If not I need to learn some new things.

You are already doing a great job.

There's a difference between interest and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you do it only when it's convenient. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results.
When you get to a plateau, think of it as a landing on the stairway to your goal. And
maintenance is a lifelong plateau, so a bit of "rehearsal" for maintenance isn't the worst thing in the world

I usually choose 2 goals per team that I am on, so I like the 2 tiered idea. I find the 8 glasses of water to be redundant. It seems to be everywhere and it gets to where it irritates me. I am going to log my food whether it is a team goal or not. So I support your idea of the team goals being:
1) Tier 1: Walk / exercise the equivalent of 2500 steps per day.
2) Tier 1: Exercise 10 minutes per day.
3) Tier 2: Walk / exercise the equivalent of 5000 steps per day.
4) Tier 2: Exercise 20 minutes per day.
5) Comment on a teammate's page or blog, one comment per day.
But if a different decision is made it doesn't bother me at all.

I may be the odd one out here as I really don't like having to record every little thing I do. I do the nutrition log, but do find that I repeat my days a lot. I like the fact that my water is already tracked on the goal and as far as the walking, that varies due to various activities, my personal health, etc. So, I will continue to adjust my steps goal to my abilities and I may just drop the nutrition log. I guess I will have to pay more attention to recording "goals"? I'm afraid as I try to limit my time here on this computer that I may not be too responsible in doing that. I guess I am saying also, that whatever you all decide to do, I will try to comply.....

To be honest, not crazy abt the 2nd tier idea. If some can do more wouldn't they just go ahead and do it? That being said, I will support the Team no matter what is decided.

I don't think we are obligated to participate in each team goal. I think it's OK to join the ones that you want. For some 2500 steps/day will be a challenge, but for others not. 5000 steps/day may suit them better. Choose which one fits you best.

BTW, freggies is a combo of veggies and fruit.

Hope that helps.

I find it a pain to list how many veggies I eat each day for each group. and I have NO idea what Freggies are. so I"m not on that. I do drink around 15-17 cups of water a day. I'd feel like I was failing the team if we had two tiers though. what if I didn't do both. then those would NOT be achieved that day. isn't the idea to do each item EVERY day?

I too keep a personal food journal (that includes so much more) and is more accurate than my SP nutrition tracker so I also opt to omit that one. And I have other teams who have the freggies and water goals.

Since this team's platform is to encourage mobility, the first four of your suggestions are especially good Kasey and the last encourages team support and spirit. So I opt for your suggestions.

I personally keep a log of what I eat, so I don't use the nutrition tracker at all, but I know most people do. I guess if you were going to get rid of 2 goals I would nominate the veggies and the water one. The tiered idea sounds great, I like most others have good and bad days that I couldn't do the higher level, but when I can, I will.

I had a nice chatty email from JANETL1 this morning. She said the earlier goals of 2500 steps and 10 minutes / day exercise are good, and she hopes they remain.

But she went on to suggest perhaps we could add what she called a "second tier" of goals. These could be more challenging for people who have greater mobility, or might be useful as people progress and need a higher target to shoot for.

I can see where a second tier might be good for those who have good days and bad days: when my DD is having a fibromyalgia flare, it might be all she can do to get out of bed. Other days, you almost wouldn't know she has the condition, and on those days, she would sometimes be able to reach second tier goals.

Thanx very much for the suggestion, Janet. I think it's a terrific idea, and I would like to change the goals accordingly.

But before I do, I need some input from team members.

Each team is allotted a total of five goals. They can be changed, but you cannot list more than five.

So - if we want to add second-tier goals of (as Janet suggested) 5000 steps and 20 minutes of exercise daily, two of the current goals would have to be dropped.

Now, when I look at the stats, the 2500 steps has a rate of 110% (I don't know how we achieve more than 100%, unless it's based on total number of steps rather than participation - and WELL DONE, team!) the 10 minutes / day exercise goal has a participation rate of 108%.

Clearly a lot of people are using those goals, and as Janet says, they should remain. They are targets I try to achieve myself.

Now, as to the other three - "Eat 5 freggies / day," "Use the Nutrition tracker," and "Drink 8 cups / water" which two do you think we could dispense with?

Personally, I record my daily water intake on my nutrition page, so it's duplicated here. And some time ago I listed it on my Personal Goals tracker, which means I'm actually relying on it three times.

For me, that's one I would take off of the team goals (and I plan to remove it from Personal Goals, as the Nutrition tracker keeps a chart of my achievement there).

Another that's a bit of a repetition for me is "Eat 5 freggies" - again, I record that information on my Nutrition tracker, and since I usually manage to have my 5-a-day, it's not much of a challenging goal.

So I would vote to remove that one.

Then there's "Use the Nutrition tracker." On the one hand, that can serve as a good reminder. On the other hand, perhaps it would be better to have that one as a Personal Goal--?

I need your thoughts on this. If I was setting it up from scratch, my first trial might be something like this:

1) Tier 1: Walk / exercise the equivalent of 2500 steps per day.
2) Tier 1: Exercise 10 minutes per day.
3) Tier 2: Walk / exercise the equivalent of 5000 steps per day.
4) Tier 2: Exercise 20 minutes per day.
5) Comment on a teammate's page or blog, one comment per day.

I threw in that last one because I'm kind of keen on encouragement. If it's a goal, you will be reminded to do it - and if you do it for just 21 days, it can become a habit. Even if you go to just one person's page and do a quick "Good morning!" it can brighten their day - and yours!

At any rate, as I say, these are what I would come up with, especially after reading Janet's marvelous suggestion for a second tier.

So - what do you think, peeps? Change, delete, add - where shall we go with the goals?
