emoticon Day 1 ~ September 11 ~~ Steps: 2000 Sightseeing: 0
I just barely made the hike up to Sheep Lakes. I’m going to be doing a lot of “arm-chair sightseeing” the next few days due to an infection in my knee - lots of swelling and pain. I’m just going to sit and watch this lovely world unfold around me. The scenery is unbelievable and how I wish I could be out exploring - but the doctor knows best I guess - at least for the next few days!
emoticon Day 2 ~ September 12 ~~ Steps: 4500 Sightseeing: 0
Still walking slowly but some of the swelling has gone down and I am not feeling as much pain. Getting to each day's site is about all the walking I can do - thank goodness I can enjoy sitting and soaking in the grandeur around me!
emoticon Day 3 ~ September 13 ~~ Steps: 6500 Sightseeing: 0
Wow! I was pushing it to make today's walk - but the pain is minimal now and the swelling is almost all gone. WooHoo! I'm going to give it one more day and then do some exploring.
emoticon Day 4 ~ September 14 ~~ REST Sightseeing: 7500
Thank goodness we had a day to rest. I slept in and felt up to some sightseeing this afternoon. I'm feeling some pain now but it's more like the normal pain I feel after walking. It's probably because I haven't been walking as much as I usually do on a daily basis.
emoticon Day 5 ~ September 15 ~~ Steps: 6000 Sightseeing: 2000
emoticon Day 6 ~ September 16 ~~ Steps: 5500 Sightseeing: 2455
emoticon Day 7 ~ September 17 ~~ Steps: 5000 Sightseeing: 2000
Thank goodness I decided to come on this trip, even with an injury! I was not brave (or foolish) enough to take a dip in Gem Lake - too cold for me! I loved the rock formations reflecting in the clear water. Bridal Veil Falls was the high point of the trip for me. It was spectacular!

Today I SAW the Bear Lake in Utah! Took lots of photos. The day was a bit cloudy but had some sun when we got to the lake. It is 20 miles long and 7 miles wide and very deep. Half of it is in Utah and half in Idaho.

Group 1 Thank you so much for getting me up and outside. I have met all the goals you have set and more. I even walked a 4000 step day. One of my 18 year old Miniature pinchers died this week, I took a day of rest for that. Even with as dizzy as I get I have kept up with the group and more. The scenery in this area is amazing and the wild life is abundant. I cannot help thanking God for all the beauty he has created. I live in the Great Smoky Mountains, we have a lot of the same wild life and a lot of it runs thru our yard daily.

Dear God, May there be less of me tomorrow! We can do it together.

This week has been great. The weather has been cooler so the bugs are down to a minimum. Always a plus! A little bit of a drizzle one day but it didn't put a hamper on the hike. It just washed everything brand new and brought a smell of fall to the air. Ferns and mushrooms are my favorite plant life to look for because they are rare ( compared to many other kinds of plants), very diverse, and are very particular about where and when they show themselves so timing is important. My sightseeing has given me quite a bounty of specimens to enjoy especially now that the season for them is drawing to an end. I remember as a child we would gather fall leaves and press them between wax paper to preserve them. I've gathered leaves to make such a memento again.

Sept. 11th– Goal - 600 Challenge steps - 600 Extra Sightseeing Steps - 4500
Description : of trek, I had a very exciting moment when in the distance I SAW A MALE ELK STANDINDING AT full attention. I culd hear him bugling. This is the time when the males call the females to join them. I just coud not move forward as I did not want to disturb him. The sight was mesmerizing, so I waited for about 15 min. until he moved off into the forest. Laawn Lake is a lovely place to spend the night and was fun just to wander around. A path borders the lake.

Loving that those who are a little confused have started to make up their own treks!

This is a PRETEND trek around the ROCKY MOUNTAINS ladies. You do your steps in real life, going about your every day business, or as a specific exercise period. I do mine playing with the girls, walking on the drive, on a treadmill, doing steps ups, doing the walk to school - chair marching if you aren't as mobile as me!

Then you just need to make up a short story of your pretend trek and what you saw....perhaps "today we treked from 'x' to 'x' and on the way I saw 'x'. The weather was amazing/awful/overcast' whatever :)

I relate my story to what I've actually been doing in my real life, but then add in some made up stuff as I go. My daughters love to pretend trek in the garden, so we usually play act what they think we should see and then I write about it

When I post in this thread, I've been saying what I was really doing when I did the steps. I guess that has probably confused people... oops. If you take a look at the blog links I have posted though, you will see what happened on my pretend trek.

EMMABE1 (Ann) has posted lots of links at the bottom of the thread to help you. She has detailed where we are trekking, posted links to help you look at some pictures of the area so you can imagine yourself there and said how many steps each day. You can also google each area and see what you find - there's lots of blogs out there from people who really have trekked these trails and they're brilliant!

Most of all - this is about having fun and keeping us motivated

So we are having a veggie soup,,,cooked on an open flame tonight, with whole wheat breadl Gotta get in the whole grains you know? I also have some frozen berries, and the Harris's have a coffee grounder,,,its very small, but we are going to "try" to make a smoothie from it. LOL !!! Should be interesting. We are going to play poker without $$$ for chips. Laying out under the stars has been so NICE ! In the past I would of refused, for I was to big, but at 170, IU am FINE !! WOOOHOOO TY SP !

Walked 1096 Sunday and 2770 so far today. I take my wheel chair every where so if I get tired I can sit. Most of the time I let it carry my supplies and I walk behind. Up very early this morning for a quick (very cold) dip in the lake. My blind tiny toy poodle followed me out into the water. I kept hearing splash, splash behind me, turned around and there he was doing the dog paddle close behind me. He gives new meaning to the phrase "I will follow you anywhere"
The squirrels are really out doing their thing. Watched a little guy dig a 6 inch deep hole to hide a tiny acorn. Bet it will be a mighty Oak before he remembers where he put it!

Dear God, May there be less of me tomorrow! We can do it together.

Mon. Sept. 12th - Goal = I hope to walk 2 miles this week, more if my pool remains closed Challenge steps - I was able to use my pedometer app to change my mileage to steps. I walked 1.05 mi, or 2221 steps, from my house to the local grocery and back, for baked corn chips to try our newly canned salsa with (I saved out 1 cup for this purpose) Extra Sightseeing Steps - ??
Description : It is a beautiful golden fall here, about 85 degrees, no leaves turning yet, so I stuck to the shade as much as possible. Squirrels are scurrying about collecting bounty for winter, as we are at home. I didn't meet anyone to chat with today, so went as fast as I could to grocery, got my chips and a pound of burger for tomorrow, and got home just as my husband was dicing the pork loin chops he'd barbecued into the chile verde we had started earlier. I'll chop a watermelon & a cucumber to go with that and warm some low carb tortillas, and that's dinner!
Tues.: walked 1777 steps, to local gym & back, before the expected rains hit. That is about the distance around Sprague Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park, a lovely nearly level walk I did with my rolling walker this spring. Lots of wildflowers, baby ducks, families with children in strollers. Also a lovely side trail to an accessible backcountry campsite thru aspens. I went only part way on that, as the camp was occupied, to respect the campers' privacy
wed: walked 1913 steps, to grocery & back, in light rain on a gray and chilly morning. Birds are flocking, getting ready to depart. Grasshoppers are sluggish and fat. I was tempted to try to gather some for some bait fishing, but they are still too fast for me.
Thursday, the pool opened again, fixed, so I swam. I have no idea ow to convert that to steps, but I felt wonderful
sept 16: today I walked to and from the local highschool football game, a little less than the distance of the accessible trail around Bear Lake in RMNP, ajewel of a walk with riveting vistas around every turn, most framed beautifully by tall trees and mirrored in the nearly still dark waters of this small cirque lake. Nice hefty benches invite me to spend time relaxing immersed in each lovely image. Lovely wildflowers here, too, and a touch of wimbsy - a family has left tiny effigees of themselves on a bench, fashioned from slowly melting snow!
Unfortunately,I forgot to check my pedometer when I got home, and it timed out, losing my steps total - opps!
Sept. 17: today I walked downtown to shop again, in a light rain, and forgot my pedometer entirely. It was the same route I traversed on Monday, however, so I claim the step total I got then, 2221 steps. That is about the distance my husband and I walked in Coyote meadow, where we actually did see a coyote hunting - I got a picture on my iphone, tho he is small you can see what he is. emoticon

Sept. 11th– Goal -2,000 Challenge steps - Extra Sightseeing Steps - 10,325. Walked to Monorail and took it to Seattle Center. There was Hawaiian Festival and listened to a band. Walked around and took photos of the International Fountain. It was very warm and lots of children and some of their parents were playing in it. It looked like fun, cooling off. Then took the elevator for 43 seconds to the top of Space Needle. With a clear day the view was amazing! Then had our lunch at Sky City Restaurant. Yummy! At 6:45pm we took Greyhound Bus to Olympia.

9/11 250 steps + 1842 sightseeing. I overslept this morinng and almost missed the shuttle bus. Yikes! Had to rush to get ready. Desptie the quick start to the day it didn't ruin my plans. I got my stpes in and enjoyed the surroundings. I think I am finally acclimated to the thinner air. Heard lots of birds chirping today and saw some squirrels and chipmunks. I love chipmunks. Can't wait for tomorrow. Had a nice turkey sandwich today and some tomato juice for a picnic lunch.
9/12 500 steps + 3575 sightseeing Heard some buggling noises and followed the sound. Surprise, it was a bull elk and his harem. Had some grilled chicken for dinner. It was cooked on a cast iron griddle and tasted wonderful. Little new potatoes were cooked with it and it was delicious. I love eating out in the fresh air. Ready for the next hike.
9/16 400 steps + 3757 sightseeing. Another beautiful day on the trail. Another week also ending. Had a nice week sssing lots of stuff. The scenery is too beautiful. Over-ppowering at times.
9/17 rest day 1327 steps.

9/14 Rest day 5617 sightseeing steps. Saw some beautiufl hawks soaring through the sky and then all of a sudden one swooped down to the lake and scooped up a fish! What a sight! So incredible!! Saw some bunnies and more squirrels. The squirrels were gathering their food for winter. How they find the nuts after they bury them is beyond me. Plenty of birds flying from tree to tree. What beautiful landscapes!
9/13 550 steps + 4750 What a beautiful day. The sun was shining and the sky was a brilliant blue. Clouds would dot the sky every now and then. It was a little warm today. The birds were quite talkative. I expect they were upset that I was intruding on their homes. While walking the trail I cross paths with a skunk. I slowed up and let him cross. I was not going to tangle with him. I didn't want to smell like skunk for the rest of the trip. I don't have enough tomato juice to cover that smell!! We got to a nice clearing in the woods and had our lunch. I had another turkey sandwich, tomato juice and a fresh apple. I am drinking plenty of water, but you know what happens!!!! I will just say we all know what the "facilities" are like!!!!!!
9/14 Rest day - 5617 sightseeing steps. Saw some big horn sheep today. How majestic!!! The ram was very handsome. No wonder he fights for all the women! Also saw a red fox chasing a rabbit. I know they have to eat, but I hope the rabbit got away! The trails are great and I am getting along fine. My knee acts up first thing in the morning, but after a little while it loosens up and I do alright.
9/15 500 steps + 2362 sightseeing steps. Bridal Veil Falls was beautiful. The falls were running great. Guess it's due to all that snow run-off from the mountains. Gem Lake is nice too. We had some home-made dried apples and trail mix for lunch. My husband caught a trout in the lake and that's what was for dinner. I liked it a little better than the first one I had.

Last week was awsom, finally something to get me off my ass. I was in group 2 and did a total of 14789 steps. I am having a bad time with my computer. I kept trying to post but it would not let me. I really enjoyed each and every day. This week I will join group 1. I did very well till day three when my allergies made me very dizzy. I intend to walk as much as possible but this way I won't feel pushed. My husband will be home from the hospital on Thursday, he will join us on one leg in the last group. He and I hiked, fished, road horses and explored caves together all over these mountains in our twenties. This trip brings back many memories. Our toy poodle (Buddy Boy) will be with us. All 6 lbs of him loves these mountains as much as we do. In his mind he is king of the mountains. Buddy has been blind almost from birth so he follows anything I have hanging from my hand. He usually puts his nose on my purse and sticks to it. This little guy has been all over the US with us. Enough said, lets get walking!

Dear God, May there be less of me tomorrow! We can do it together.

Sept. 11th– Goal - 600 Challenge steps - 600 Extra Sightseeing Steps - 3000
After a day off in Estes Park with a real bed to sleep in and a couple of nice long hot showers (last night and this morning) we hopped on the shuttle bus to take us up to our next campsite. We got there early enough to do some exploring. There were signs of Elk in the area but we didn't actually see any -- maybe tomorrow.

Sept. 12th - Goal = 1600 Challenge steps - 1600 Extra Sightseeing Steps - 1912

Sept. 13th - Goal = 3000 Challenge steps - 3000 Extra Sightseeing Steps - 11121

Sept. 14th - Goal = 4000 Challenge steps - 2660

Sept. 15th Goal = 3500 Challenge steps - 3500 + 1340 catchup Extra Sightseeing Steps -
Sept. 16th - Goal = 3000 Challenge steps - 2448

Sept. 17th – Goal = 3000 Challenge steps - 3000 + 552 catchup Extra Sightseeing Steps - 84

Finally made it after having to catch up a bit during the week. Didn't have much time to journal but the scenery was fantastic especially the Bridal Veil Falls. Saw lots of Elk and Bighorn Sheep and took lots of pictures.

Sept. 11th– Goal -2,000 Challenge steps - Extra Sightseeing Steps -7946 .
We all met at the shuttle bus that took us to Sheep Lakes, It was a lovely walk up to the Lumpy Ridge Trailhead . As per usual, I had to check out the fishing spots. There were quite a few campers fly fishing for trout! I thought about a quick dip in the lake ..It was such a lovely sunny Fall day but the water was to cold!
I checked out the meadows and really enjoyed the wildflowers, and of course they were so different to ours.
Saw a flock of big horn sheep with young .. and a Eagle sitting on top of one of the lovely aspen trees.
Was quite tired by the time I had checked everything out and and caught up with everyone else.

Description of Trek: Well - unfortunately, due to a busy schedule, my treks have been in the dark with my flashlight. So - I've seen a lot of rocks... and managed not to stumble over them. I heard wildlife rustling in the bushes, but alas, it always moved before my flashlight could find it. The air was crisp, but also embellished by the campfires of my fellow trekkers. I love the scent of wood fires!

Group 1 (for one more week and then I hope to do well the following week in Group 2)

Day 1 (9/11) Walked 250 Steps and then explored the beautiful area around Lawn Lakes and hiked another 1300 steps today. I'm feeling a little down today as my dear friend Gail is very sick and is in the Hospital. I pray she will heal and join us when/if she can.

Day 2 (9/12) 500 Challenge Steps done and another 700 sightseeing--It's so beautiful and clear here. It's good to wake up in the morning and smell the pine trees and breakfast cooking. . .HIked around the Lake and Maybe I'll try fishing tomorrow as I did see plenty there.

Day 3 (9/13) 550 Challenge Steps done with another 800 sightseeing as there is so much to see! It's Beautiful here and we ate the fish I caught today for dinner--yummy and so fresh. Everything tastes better cooked and eaten outdoors. I saw a little group of wild deer--they are so majestic looking. I'm going to bed soon as I'm tired from all the hiking and fishing I did today. Looking forward to another great day tomorrow!!

Day 4 (9/14) Rest Day - I really enjoyed all the sightseeing and I even caught 3 fish in the Lake which I cooked tonight--simple and delicious. I did around 1,000 steps today and I feel good as seem to have less knee pain recently!

Day 5 (9/15) 500 Challenge Steps walking around the hills. . .And, another 900 Steps Sightseeing and hiking--so much fun to move around and smell the clean fresh air. The weather has been great also which helps when your mainly outdoors!!

Day 6 (9/16) 400 Steps Goal

Day 7 (9/17) Rest Day

I'm really Looking forward to continuing this great Outdoor Adventure and Move More!

Group 2 - 2011

Sun, 9/11 GOAL STEPS: 600
Challenge steps: 600; Extra Sightseeing Steps: 1422
Description of Trek: Met the team and took shuttle to Sheep Lakes. We walked to the Lawn Lake Trailhead, located on the east side of the northeast section of the Rockies. So apparently our group came at just the right time – September-October. Not only can we see the changing of intensely deep and ever changing colors of the leaves and greenery, but during the day, we got to see some sheep at Horseshoe Park. Brought back from near extinction, there are about 600. They come down from the higher elevations, graze for a while and return back. The rangers stopped traffic just to allow the animals to cross. And, although I didn’t get to see it, the Bighorn sheep have “head-butting contests” on the mountainsides. The sheep generally weigh up to 500 pounds (with females over 200 lbs) and their horns alone are about 30 pounds! You don’t want to mess with these sheep and you should stay your distance!!!

Mon, 9/12- GOAL STEPS: 1600
Challenge steps: 1600; Extra Sightseeing Steps: 4990
Description of Trek: 6.2 miles from the Trailhead is Lawn Lakes. Its shoreline is long and flat. It has Mummy Mountain on the east and Fairchild Mountain and Hagues Peak on the north. Again lots of fir and spruce trees to the north of the lake and the Patrol Cabin was in the west. In the Horseshoe Park area we got to see some elk...now we knew the guys that were making all that noise!!! There were a lot more marmots and squirrels and chipmunks. The park rangers told us to be watchful of storms and make sure we got below the treeline. There was a dam flooding in 1982 and although it caused a lot of flooding, the lake is now at its original level.

Tues, 9/13- GOAL STEPS: 3000
Challenge steps: 3000; Extra Sightseeing Steps: 310
Description of Trek: We are going to the Cow Creek Trailhead/ Lumpy Ridge Trailhead junction for the night. Whew...are we ever walking!!!! The Cow Creek Trail is a favorite for local runners and Lumpy Ridge is known for world class rocky climbing! The colors were brilliant along the Cow Creek Trail and again there were lots of deer, elk, turkey, grouse, and fox. Glad we didn't see those coyotes!!!!

Wed, 9/14- GOAL STEPS: 4000
Challenge steps: 4000; Extra Sightseeing Steps: 3871

The top of the falls has to be reached with caution, but there one finds more falls, rock formations and great views of this isolated area.

To complete the Rocky Mountains Challenge Week 2, you will need to walk (regular or treadmill), chair march, run, or use a combo of all each day… whatever works best way for you

No matter what method you choose, you NEED TO COUNT YOUR STEPS. Remember, you don’t have to do the steps all at once, you can do them over the course of the day, but they MUST be done during that particular day. And you are allowed to catch up if you fall behind.

IMPORTANT: There is one rule to this challenge – you may NOT go ahead in the trail – no matter how many steps you take in the day, ONLY the stated, allowed number of steps are to count towards the challenge – extra steps should be recorded as well, but as sightseeing steps!!!

Since there are so many of us of various levels of ability and mobility, I have decided to have 4 groups of walkers. Please SELECT the GROUP that best suits your ability, but in making a selection, remember this should challenge your own ability.

GROUP 1 – limit to under 800 steps daily for the whole 8 weeks. Suitable for those who are just starting
GROUP 2 – Suitable for those who are more capable and have been either walking or chair marching for a time
GROUP 3 – Suitable for those who walk long distances in comfort
GROUP 4 - Suitable for Wheelchair/non-walking members ONLY
Every day this week – morning –
1 – Lift one leg – getting the foot as far off the ground as possible– first with knee bent –– then with the knee straight but relaxed (don’t lock it) as if you are kicking something –do each movement at least 10 times with each leg - repeat with other leg Try for at least 5 sets with each leg, with a rest between each set.
AND
With left arm – Hold a 1 lb weight in your hand – use a can of food, a dumbbell or a bottle of water – start with hand by your left shoulder and push your hand forward until the arm is straight with elbow relaxed (do not lock the elbow) Repeat 10 times then repeat with right arm. Try for at least 5 sets with each arm, with a rest between sets
Every day this week – afternoon – Repeat the morning exercises

ALL GROUPS - Extra steps you do are to be logged as exploring or sightseeing

You do not have to be in the same group this week as last week – BUT . Do not change GROUPS during the week

NOTE: Once you have selected your group and you start the Challenge, you come to THIS thread and POST at least ONCE in the week . If you come more often please GO TO YOUR OWN PERSONAL COMMENT and EDIT your comment with the new information. Remember to:

1) STATE THE GROUP YOU ARE IN
2) TELL US the NUMBER OF STEPS YOU HAVE COMPLETED
3) TELL US HOW YOU ARE GETTING ON: what you saw on the way, whether you are getting to the camp sites, what you saw on the way, what you had for food, and whether you are enjoying the trek!!
NOTE:.You will only be eligible to claim a Goodie if you post at least once in the week and complete all your weekly steps!!
OR
If you would prefer to write a blog on your Week 2 Trek adventures – please do so – BUT please let me know when you have done this so that I can read it

I have been thrilled and so pleased by some of the wonderful descriptions, and blogs of the trek so far – they are what make the time I spent getting it together worthwhile!! Thank you!!-

Week 2:

We will then go on to Gem lake for the night. Take a lovely swim in the icy cool crystal clear lake!!
Gem Lake
"The shallow waters of Gem Lake are cradled high among the rounded granite domes of Lumpy Ridge. Untouched by glaciation, this outcrop of 1.8 billion-year-old granite has been sculpted by wind and chemical erosion into a backbone-like ridge. Signs of these erosional forces--pillars, potholes, and balanced rocks--appear midway along the trail to Gem Lake. Other highpoints include spectacular views of the Estes Valley and Continental Divide, and a curious balanced rock called Paul Bunyan's Boot. Gem Lake's elevation is 8,800 feet
