I fell in the middle of the night, and I mean I fell HARD last Tuesday Night. I managed to finish up the week with Group two by chair exercising. But honestly, I really felt I was pushing beyond my limit.

I don't know if I have met goals worthy of a Goodie.

Can one switch groups from one week to another?

ROCKY MOUNTAINS TREK - WEEK 1

Group ONE

04th Sept 300 steps 250 steps adventuring.
"Well, I had a great day exploring. I was so glad I had my water with me and when I got hungry I remembered my grapefruit in my sack. It was a good time to sit on this rock by the side of the trail. I really savored each juicy piece as I watch the sun getting ready for the the sunset. It was a peaceful spot and I sat there enjoying the symphony created by the crickets and birds. I sat there grateful that Ann directed this whole trip. I have to thank her again when I see her back at camp. Which reminded me that I better head back before it gets dark. I'm really looking forward to my dinner. And I better get my airbed ready because I'm going to sleep good tonight.
05th Sept 500 steps. (Ann, see blog)
06th Sept 650 steps
07th Sept 800 steps
08th Sept rest day
09th Sept 580 steps
10th Sept 360 steps

ROCKY MOUNTAINS TREK - WEEK ONE
Group 3

Sept. 04 - 1,000
[steps done whilst playing baseball with my girls and kite-flying, as well as marking out areas for our new garden beds - lots of 'sightseeing' done, but I stopped counting at 1,000!
www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journa
l_individual.asp?blog_id=4468511]

Sept. 05 - 4,000
[again, I didn't count my 'sightseeing' and my steps today were done whilst playing with the girls in the sun, gardening and later at the gym on the treadmill, doing walking lunges and step ups
www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journa
l_individual.asp?blog_id=4468564]

Sept. 06 - 7,500 [normal cleaning and running round after girls, plus several trips up and down the driveway when the girls were asleep. Great bit of cardio seeing as it's a steep hill!!
al_individual.asp?blog_id=4468580]

Sept. 07 - I was resting so I read a book ("Anatomy & Fitness for Strength Training for Women") instead :)

Sept. 08 - 5000!

Sept. 09 - 3500

Sept. 10 - Hmm a mystery day... where were we on that day (still on the shuttle bus? frozen in time?) anyway, I'm conservatively estimating that I did 3,000 steps.

Ok, that works.
Group 3
Steps day 1 forgot
Day 2 forgot
Day 3 forgot
Day 4 12788 steps which makes up for all the days I forgot. LOL I hope. lets see.

Day 1=1000
Day 2 =4000
Day 3= 7500
Day 4= rest day. MY Day to catch up, 12788 I had it just about right. All I needed was 12500
So, 288 sightseeing steps
Day 5= Actual rest day Supposed to be 5000 steps
Day 6 =13899 Supposed to be 3500 steps 13899-8500=5399 sightseeing steps
Day 7 = Saturday Sept 10 Walked 2 hours with walking sticks through mud. Counting 14000 since it was slightly longer than the 1 hour and 45 minutes I did yesterday on the WII.

Ok, what happened to Day 7 on our list? ISn't saturday day Seven?

How I did; I have to say watching Follow the Fleet while walking is much better than starring at 4 walls. I'll try to be more creative about imagining the fun next week. maybe I'll post some actual camping memories from that area if that's ok. Let me know. LOL kitty

Kitty,

All the Groups are for walkers, chair walkers, etc. HOWEVER you choose to get your steps in is okay.

As far as imagination, as Ann says, she gives some pictures etc. I suggest you go on Google and put in the name of the place that we are visiting that day and then take that information and write about it as if YOU are going there. Does this help?

For example, let's say we are visiting Fern Falls, then go to Google and type in "Fern Falls sights" or maybe you might want to put in "Fern Lake to Fern Falls" OR anything you want to put in there. A number of items will pop up that you can go into and look at. I found one that described the trail to Fern Falls and then found a wonderful utube video of the Falls. I wrote the person who posted the video and asked permission to post it on my blog. He said, "sure go ahead." In looking up all this stuff, I also found magnificent pictures from Rian Houston who also said "go ahead and post" as long as I gave them the credit.

In short, it is not imagination necessarily as much as looking up where we are going and writing about it!!! Then, believe it or not, your imagination will come into play and soar.

hugs
barbara

So, my week looks like this:

9/4 300 steps, 2401 steps sightseeing
9/5 500 steps, 2044 steps sightseeing
9/6 650 steps, 1900 sightseeing
9/7 rest day, 5343 steps sightseeing
9/8 580 steps, 1400 sightseeing
9/9 360 steps, 921 sightseeing

Saw some nice wildlife this week, ate some fish caught in the lake (not my favorite), had nice picnic lunches and enjoyed the scenery. the pine trees are beautiful. the lake was cool and clear. Saw some spark friends up ahead and some were fishing. I slept great until tonight. I wrote comments daily on my week long trek. Can't wait for week 2. Was thinking of changing groups, but I thought better of it and will stay with group1.

emoticon I've got my hiking boots on. emoticon My backpack packed with plenty of good food and drink. emoticon Time to get started. The shuttle is about ready to pull out. Better get a seat. Here goes...

9/4 (600 steps) 600/ 6437 sightseeing....What a gorgeous place. High in the Mountains. Can't wait to see the rest. My hips are screaming..stop!

9/5 (2500) 2500/2110 sightseeing. Bear lake is beautiful. Water is a lot cooler than I like for a swim. I will sit here and dangle my feet in it. Not for long, got to get to Lake Helene. Beautiful with the snow capped mountains in the background. We have to keep moving, but I could just sit here beside the lake and just be quiet. No rushing, or hurrying. Stayed a little to long, so had to hustle to get the Lake Helene for the night. Ate camper provisions and turned in early. Hips are stiff from the extra walking and rough terrain.

9/6 (4000) 4000/6198 exploring and sightseeing. Fern Fall is so wonderful. The water cascading down the mountain is breathtaking. Resting here tonight. It is real cool, so a nice bowl of soup will be nice. The snow capped mountains reflecting into the lake is so majestic.

9/7 (Rest Day) - Wow I really need this break. I need to rest my legs.

9/8 (2900) 2900/1755 It was quite a rough climb to Cub Lake. I really didn't think this ole body could make it this far.

9/9 (1800) 1800/2700 Going to take it easy and slow on the return trip to Bear Lake entrance and the shuttle. It was a wonderful adventure. I am so glad you invited me along.

emoticon Time for some sleep... Good night

isn't group three for walkers? I don't walk all my steps, I do chair marching for most of it, but I do close to those amount of steps. I'll try to catch up.

Another thing I'm struggling with is I really don't have the imagination to create a sightseeing journal. how do you DO it? LOL I could tell you about some real walks I've taken in the various parks in that area. I grew up in Colorado Spgs/widefield area.

Kitty,

Each day there are different steps for the different groups. Maybe since this is the last day, you might want to start next week? Just a suggestion. See this weeks steps for each Grp.

Day 1 – (Group 1 - 300 steps; Group 2 – 600 steps; Group 3 – 1000 steps)
Day 2 – (Group 1 - 500 steps Group 2 – 2500 steps Group 3 – 4000 steps)
Day 3 – (Group 1 - 650 steps;Group 2 –4000 steps; Group 3 – 7500 steps)
Day 4 – (ALL GROUPS – rest day)
Day 5 - (Group 1 - 580 steps;Group 2 – 2900 steps; Group 3- 5000 steps)
Day 6 - (Group 1 - 360 steps;Group 2 – 1800; steps; Group 3 – 3500 steps)

YOU pick your own group. I picked Group 2 because when I saw how many steps Group 3 escalated to, I knew it was too much for me. You can change groups too at the beginning of a week (but not in the middle). Ann will give us Week 2 on Sat or Sun.. look out for it!!!

Then Ann also gave a template you can use or change to your liking. Here it is:

Group ???? (your selection)
Sept. 04 - steps- ?? sightseeing - ???
Sept. 05
Sept. 06
Sept. 07
Sept. 08
Sept. 09
Sept. 10

PROGRESS for WEEK 1

LOL, I don't know which group to join. it's been since christmas since I did a regular workout, but my workout is Chair marching and waving due to knee problems. But I can do a lot when I make up my mind so maybe I don't belong on this team? I did 13800 day before yesterday, but I didn't post it cause I'm not sure where to put it. LOL

9/6 650 steps and 1900 for sightseeing.
9/7 rest day, but we still walked. I got in 5343 steps today sightseeing. My husband caught soem fish at the alke and that's what we had for dinner. Not bad for fresh water fish. Still not my favorite. The week is almost over. Hard to believe our first week will be done. Saw some deer today. They didn't see us at first but the wind blew in the wrong direction and they soon smelled us and flashed their white tails and were off. Oh well, pretty while it lasted.

Sept 6 and 7 Group 2 3678 and 2881 so far today
Great day yesterday, no pain a real plus for walking but very dizzy all day. Really had to focus to stay on track. We left out early, the day was clean and fresh after all the rain. The forest was alive with lots of after rain activity. All the many creatures were out finding food. We decided on a simple breakfast, chocolate browne Luna bar, fresh strawberries and water. We walked till about 3PM and decided to stop for the night. Thank God we could catch up today. Small fire under a friendly out crop of rock. We watched the sky the rest of the day and on into the night. The clouds were spectacular after the rains and the night sky was ablaze with stars. Reminded me of Booms day fireworks back home for Labor Day. Shooting stars were featured in the grand finale. Today we arrived at the falls about midday. Set up camp and cooked dinner, you guessed it FISH and veggies, carrot pumpkin bar for desert. Early to bed after a few songs by the camp fire.

Dear God, May there be less of me tomorrow! We can do it together.

Day one: 300 steps and 200 sightseeing. Little rocky at first as the terrain is more uneven than I'm used to, so I got myself a walking stick and things are going better!

Day 2 – 500 steps and 700 sightseeing
Almost ran into a skunk today! It was a close call but I avoided him by walking through a meadow.

Day 3 – 650 steps and 300 sightseeing. It was hot today. Felt it after the late morning hike so by the time I got to the falls I took my boots off and had a little dip. It was refreshing and lovely!

Day 4 – (ALL GROUPS – rest day)
We will spend at Fern Falls and The Pond resting and maybe exploring and maybe waiting for other groups to catch up!!

Day 5 - (Group 1 - 580 steps ; Group 2 – 2900 steps; Group 3- 5000 steps)
We will walk to a camp site set up at Lake Bierstadt, diverting by Cub Lake for lunch
Here is a picture of Cub Lake for your interest!! www.nevadarambler.info/blog/?p=140

Day 6 - (Group 1 - 360 steps; Group 2 – 1800; steps; Group 3 – 3500 steps)
We will bring it home walking back to Bear Lake and the Shuttle Bus.

But she helped me to walk over my FIRST FOOT BRIDGE ! I've always wanted to do that ! Thanks Sarah ! THANKS ! Saw some young ones usings ROPES on the prescipise ! (sp?) the face of the mountain ! WOW I wish I could do that ! This though was wonderful ! We had some beans cooked under the ground,,they were good ! I used 1/2 the amount of molasses and brown sugar. We ate A LOT of them since we walked so much. Tonight sleeping under the STARS !! WOW I live in the city so this is EXCITING to be in a TENT ! Can't wait to get to know you all !
Sept. 07 Well it RAINED last night !! Was so PEACEFUL we played games with the Harris's we met next to us. They are very nice and decided we'd all trek off together today ! YEAH !! So OFF we went !! Saw in the lake a TROUT now i did NOT think those those were native here? It looked like a brook trout? Rick said it might of been placed here by the forest rangers to help out with fishing in the spring. AHHHH and also to help feed the BEARS ! Oh I much rather they EAT the TROUT then ME ! OH YEAH ! LOL !!! Since it Smelled "fishy" it made me hungry for tuna,,,so we made it MY way,,,,, not with mayo, but with light italian dressing and just a wee bit on pita bread. It was very good, with cheese for I need to increase calcuim for my otheoporsis. Now to relax and look at the stars,,the Harris's tomorrow will go be going down another trail,,, so tonight we'll enjoy their company for the last time. My GD stated "I can't believe I am LIKING this, NOT LOVING IT ! without a TV!" I had to LAUGH ! 300/400
Sept. 08 300/400 Saw a BLACK SNAKE today !! It didn't have a "rattle" on it but I SCREECHED ANYWAYS ! I am NOT from these parts, I am from the NE where we don't have any poisous snakes,,,,I was sooo terrified !!!!! It took me a bit to walk more,,,my GD conviened me it'd be safe as long as we stayed on the path (HA ! Thats where I saw the SLIMEY THANG !) LOL My heart is STILL Beating hardah again just rethinkin about it !!!! Why did God make SNAKES!???? To eat mosquitoes I suppose ! Thats good, but WHY DID I Have to see it? LOL ! The terrain was GOREOUS !!!! I love the trees, its true the higher you go, the SHORTER they are ! LOL That always cracks me UP !!! Tonight we are having veggie pita sandwiches , with portabella mushrooms, gr peppers, onions, and american cheese on mine, cheddar on Sarahs. Drinkin A TON of water ! SO GLAD the bus is never far away !!! TY for that ! nighters ! Zzzzzzz ers peaceful out here,,,last night heard 2 bears growling in the distance,,,,,it was soo cool !

9/5 500 steps + 2044 steps sightseeing.
9/6 650 steps done, 1578 steps sightseeing but I am not finished for the day yet. Had a nice lunch at the lake with my husband. We had turkey sandwiches on flatbread, kinda like a wrap, with some lettuce and tomato. My husband skipped the veggies so I ate his! Had a nice Jazz apple for dessert. Dinner will be some grilled chicken and veggies. Yum. I seem to be working up an appetite in this nice air. Saw some wild turkeys today. Quite the family unit. I think we counted 12 of them. My husband may try his hand at fishing tomorrow. I'm not big on fresh water fish, but if he catches something guess we'll eat it! The week is going by fast.

Sept 5 Group2 Walked 2612 so far today, will hit over 3000 by bed time.
Woke to a soft misting rain. Checked the rain gage, two inches over night. Everything is so clean and fresh. would love to stay in bed but up and adam. We fished all morning. Nothing like trout with eggs for breakfast with a touch of tiger sauce, ah the spice of life. Packed up and headed for Lake Helen. Arrived in camp in time for lunch. Don cleaned fish while I gathered wood and lots of pine needles. I got the fire going and cooked the fish and warmed a bunch of mixed vegetables we just love with fish. We spent the afternoon listening to books on tape and I stitched. Dinner was more fish with a creamy jello salad with mixed fruit. Desert was a slice of peach sour cream cake, only 192 Calories. Still raining, up to 5 inches in the rain gage. A couple of games on the DS to keep the brain frosty and a great nights sleep.

Dear God, May there be less of me tomorrow! We can do it together.

9/4 300 steps and 2401 steps sightseeing.
9/5 500 steps done and I am sightseeing now. So far 882 steps sightseeing but I'm not finished. Had a beautiful sunrise this morning. Heard the birds fussing early this morning. Seems like they were excited about my being here. My husband is awed by the height of the pine trees. he says it's like the empire State building. I just like the smell of the pine needles. Passed by a little brook today and saw some small fish swimming around. I like the solitude of the forest area.

Sept. 04 - steps-1000 sightseeing - 9000 (glad to see the YMCA Conference ctr nearby)What beautiful terrain. There is LOTS of wildlife. I've seen Big Horned sheep, elk, birds, rabbits, squirrels, marmot, and even deer. The plant life is plentiful. I finally got to see what Columbine & Aspens look like up close. I have to say that the view of Bear Lake is just breath taking. I would like to have been able to see it when the fall folliage is in full color but it's still awesome. I made sure to take some time in the wee hours of the morning to just quietly venture down to the lakeside to meditate while staring at the reflective survace of the lake. AWESOME.

Sept. 05 steps-1000 sightseeing - 9000 I really enjoyed the hike to Lake Helene. I took some awesome pictures of the wild flowers. Camping was lovely & I was able to get up at dawn to watch the sunrise AND spend some more time meditating at the lake shore.

ROCKY MOUNTAINS TREK - WEEK ONE

Group 2

Group 2
Sept. 04 - 600 steps; sightseeing - 200 The trail went through beautiful scenery and the lake is amazing. My hiking boots are perfect for this trek..

Sept. 05 2500 I was late getting started today and had to rush through my walk to make it before dark. Rather tired now and didn't really get to enjoy the scenery. Will start earlier tomorrow for a more leisurely hike.

Sept. 06 4000 steps sightseeing 29 The sceney was spectacular and I dawdled. Had to use my flashlight for the last 1000 steps. Didn't get to see Fern Falls in all its glory until this morning. Definitely worth the wait.

Sept. 07 3,490 Sightseeing Got up early today to watch the sunsrise over the pond. Sometimes the beauty just takes ones breath away. It was over all too soon t. I want to spend some time at the falls and do some sightseeing around the area.

Sept. 08 2900 steps 4400 sightseeing The spruce trees were magnificent today. I loved the way the sunlight filtered through them. Just wasn't ready to get to the lake early and took time to meander. I had my bell with me just in case a bear wandered through.

Sept. 09 1800 steps Hated having to get up before daybreak to make it back to Bear Lake early. All the scenery has been to beautiful. But I have a family matter to take care of before we start the next loop. I am loving Rocky Mt. National Park and this challenge.

ROCKY MOUNTAINS TREK - WEEK ONE

Group 1
Sept. 04 - steps- 300; sightseeing - 100 Saw a great little brook off the main trail and the water was so clear I could see the fish swimming. I sat quietly for quite awhile and out came a raccoon to wash and eat his food in the brook.

Sept. 05 - steps 180; hips objecting to chair marching. Not getting far but enjoying the trek. Rode with the cook to the camp site. As we travel higher I can smell fresh air not found on the prairies of Texas and see trees as tall as next year. Tomorrow will do my best to get in the desired number of steps. Saw a bald eagle carrying a rabbit in his talons. Mother Nature can be harsh.

Sept. 06 - 300 steps; 40 sightseeing; lower back and hips screaming objections. Still staying focused though!

Sept. 07 - 300 steps; 120 sightseeing; birdwatching took me beyond footprints and sound. Beautiful snow without anything disturbing its pristine beauty, There was no snow when I went to bed last night. Now a lovely 4 inch blanket that will melt soon is everywhere I look.

You walk the number of steps beside each day - for your group!!
Day 1 – (Group 1 - 300 steps; Group 2 – 600 steps; Group 3 – 1000 steps)

if you do more than the number for your group - you record the EXTRA as sightseeing - and record the steps stated for your group that you have done for your challenge
then you tell me about your day - what you saw,te etc

Everyone smiles in the same language.

I'm not sure how this challenge works. You say walk 800 steps, but further down the 2nd post, you mentioned only 300 steps for the first day.

Sept. 04 - 600 steps and 4890sightseeing steps
I was so excited to begin the new adventure I could hardly sleep last night. I awoke early, and to provide myself incentive for the Trek ahead, I slipped on my pedometer as soon as I was dressed. I certainly did not want to miss a moment of the much anticipated Rocky Mountain Trek. I was craning my neck this way and then that, taking in all of the beautiful scenery to the lake. I enjoyed the company of the others in my group on the shuttle ride. I enjoyed the walk, the scenery, and the company of the other Spark Members in Group 2. What a nice suprise at the end of today's adventure to see that my pedometer reading at nice 5490.

Sept. 05 Steps – 2500 Sight seeing steps: 4500. Pretty tired, in a good way. I'll share some of the sights tomorrow. To tired right now.
Sept. 06 Steps 4000 sight seeing steps 1495. Knee joints bothering me today. I determinedly pushed myself to keep up with the rest of the group.

Since I'm unable to do 800 steps right now, thought about dropping out, but Ann encouraged me to stay in the challenge, so I will participate after all.

1,358 steps so far.
Bet I sleep good tonight. What a wonderful day. Took the trail as soon as we arrived. Sky was a beautiful clear Robin Egg Blue, and air smelled of fresh pine. Too many people around to see many animals but I know they are there. The woods are alive with bird song and the squirrels cussed us out as we invade their territory. We went fishing as soon as we made camp. Fresh trout for dinner with pan tossed hash browns, onions and diced green peppers. A nice slice of chocolate zucchini cake for desert. We stayed well within our calorie count with plenty of vegetables, protein and minim fats. All this walking sure makes you hungry. Had a fresh peach on the trail to keep up our strength. Shot a few hoops after dinner. Think I will turn in. There are so many more stars out here. See you guys tomorrow.

Dear God, May there be less of me tomorrow! We can do it together.

emoticon Sept. 04 ~ Goal: 1000 sightseeing - 8939
I enjoyed the slight drizzle as I set out on my trek around Bear Lake. The mist coming off the mountain was beautiful and really stood out in my pictures! The raindrops slid down the leaves, slowly dripping and tapping on my umbrella. I saw a few spider webs glistening with raindrops and the wildflowers looked like they were covered with liquid crystals! I loved seeing the Indian Paintbrush - it brought back reading the book of that title (by Tomie dePaola) to my first graders!

emoticon Sept. 05 ~ Goal: 4000 sightseeing - 5635
Lake Helene is absolutely gorgeous! I could look at it for hours, always finding new points of interest in the towering mountain faces and along the edges of the lake.

emoticon Sept. 06 ~ Goal: 7500 sightseeing - 3337
emoticon Sept. 07 ~ REST DAY sightseeing - 3611
Fern Falls is a relaxing combination of sight and sound! The water cascades and flows as it “sings” to our group. We all felt a sense of peace and calmness while standing and drinking in it’s beauty. We all decided that this was a wonderful place to enjoy our scheduled rest day! I spent quite a bit of time wandering around (never off the trails) and looking at the local plants and wildlife. I had to laugh at the marmot - he (or she?) has cousins living in my backyard, or at least the groundhogs who live have a distinct family resemblence except for lacking the busy tail! The Alpine Forget-Me-Nots are, without a doubt, my favorite of all the flowers I’ve seen, although the Wood Lily is running a close second so far.

emoticon Sept. 08 ~ Goal: 5000 sightseeing - 2381
Okay, camping is not my favorite activity but I’m dealing well with it! I’m used to an RV so tenting is not my forte and I haven’t slept in a tent since childhood. My Spark Journey has definitely proved to me that even an “old dog” can enjoy new things! Cub Lake is beautiful. The water was rippling with the breeze and we saw several fish jump. The “fishermen” among us were wishing for their rods and reels to take advantage of the opportunity! I love the pines that come almost to the water line in spots. It reminds me of an area in the park I walk at home - where the pines meet up with a small stream and pond. It’s just a tiny area called Piney Woods, but it’s always peaceful and relaxing. I got the same feeling as I looked out over Cub Lake after eating that delicious lunch.

emoticon Sept. 09 ~ Goal: 3500 sightseeing - 6335
The trek back to meet up with the shuttle bus at Bear Lake was a quiet one. I think we were all revisiting the memories we made this week and looking forward to the adventures and experiences next week will bring us!

Group1, got in my 300 steps and have 2137 as of now. I will be walking a little more so it isn't my day total yet. It will be time ot make camp pretty soon. I twiddled my feet in the lake. Cool water, but nice. Saw some people fishing, wonder if it was some Spark people? The mountain air is wonderful, a little crisp, just the way I like it. Heard some rustling in the woods earlier today but never saw anything. I wasn't too keen on meeting whatever it was face to face, not yet anyway! I can't wait for sunrise tomorrow. I bet it will be beautiful.

ROCKY MOUNTAINS TREK - WEEK 1

Group 1.
What I am finding so amazing is the great quality of air. No smog here. Also because of the high altitude it is a little hard to take a deep breath. And the smells, almost a perfume, a little musty but pleasant. I love the sounds of the rushing water and the leaves crunching under each step I take. It is so beautiful to my eyes that the burn in my legs from the hike has went hardly unnoticed.

04th Sept- 300 plus steps. The trail is done and some exploration.

I think I will try my luck with a fishing lure and see if I can catch us some dinner. Those trout are mighty tasty cooked over a wood fire.

05th Sept- 500 plus steps,

I finished the trail today and did some sight seeing. My sleep last night was interrupted by some very strange noises and I am sure there was a bear in camp. My muscles are screaming at me from the hike yesterday but it is worth it seeing all of God's majestic creation. The beauty and vibrant colors, well there isn't enough words to describe. I heard that their is a hot springs somewhere near here. I am going to go soak some aching muscles. Jill, you want to join me for a dip before dinner? Tonight is cowboy beans, peppers and cornbread.

06th Sept- REST DAY I took very sick last night with chills, shakes and throwing up. Ann gave me permission to take my rest day, no steps today or food. YUK, Hope I am better tomorrow

I'm in Group 1 and I've done half my hike--it is so beautiful here and peaceful!

9/4 Day 1 - 150 Steps and I'm resting but looking forward to the rest of the Hike! Took a good rest. Did some fishing will Gail (she caught all the fish--LOL) and walked 150 steps around the Lake. Will hit the "hay" early tonight to rest up tomorrow for a longer hike. So Total of 300 hiking steps today!

10/29 Day 1 - Did 2,400 Steps Today - Felt really Good

9/5 Day 2 -500 Plus Steps--Really am enjoying the fresh Mt. air and it feels good hiking and moving more today!! Beautiful Mountains and Lake and the fish are plentiful here. The food tasted so good cooked over a campfire. . .I was hungry as did take a dip in the Lake with Gail. I'm about ready to get some sleep as we'll be hiking more tomorrow. I'm so glad I decided to go hiking with all of you as I'm having fun!!
10/30 Day 2 - Did 500 + 1600 Sightseeing Steps

9/6 Day 3 - 650 + Steps Today--Was a Wonderful Day with a "bite" in the air!! Walked & hiked the day away and we just had a wonderful fresh fish dinner that friends caught and it was so yummy and nutritious!! Looking forward to storytelling and singing songs by the campfire tonight! I will be sightseeing tomorrow with friends and hiking around the woods.
10/31 650 Steps + 1800 Sightseeing ones

9/7 Day 4 - Rest Day - Sightseeing was fun and got in another 700 steps going around the beautiful Ferns and Pond!! I really appreciate all this natural beauty as I don't get to see this very often being I'm a City girl, but a Country girl at heart! I hope my hiking buddy Gail will be feeling well soon as she's couldn't go with me exploring as she isn't feeling well today.

11/1 Didn't Rest But did do 2,400 Sightseeing Steps--Love it!

9/8 Day 5 - 600 Steps - Hiked around the Lake, saw lots of wildlife and interesting plants/flowers all around. . .rested up and then did another 600 steps sightseeing all the beauty that is surrounding me--It is so clear and beautiful here. . .I'm so glad I decided to come as I love exploring and hiking--it's even fun getting a little fishing in as I haven't done that for many years.

11/2 Didn't do too much today as my lower back hurts but did do 1,400 steps--better than nothing!

9/9 Day 5 - 600 Steps + 1,000 Sight Seeing--Everything is just Beautiful. I sure am enjoying all the sights and clear fresh air! I ate too much dinner but I was really hungry from so much hiking and everything tastes so good cooked outdoors!

9/10 Day 6 - Hiked 400 Steps Today plus over 700 more sightseeing. I've really enjoyed my trip so much and really look forward to next weeks outdoor adventure to continue. I'm getting more exercise and I'm lovin it!! I think I'll continue in Group 1 next week and then try Group 2. Thank you Ann for inviting me as this is so much fun and beautiful too!!

I would be in group three. I think I started this a little late and missed my bus. I had to jog to catch up. I also learned my watch is not working so I dont have any steps but I did do a nice little senic tour this morning of 3.62 miles so I could catch up with you all. It was a little warm but the wind helped. I loved seeing those leaves blowing in the wind.

Group 1 what beautiful scenery! I am just about finished with my hike. 254 steps down a few more to go then I will be sightseeing the rest of the day. My husband is not a sparker but I got him a pedometer the other day and he is walking with me. He can certianly do a higher group, but he is sticking with me for now.

ROCKY MOUNTAINS TREK - WEEK ONE

Group 2
Sept. 04 - 600 steps- 2400 sightseeing - I saw a bunch of lakes...went to the Pool and this is definitely the time for the Aspens...so yellow, so beautiful...words cannot express! Then on to Moraine Park, over Big Thompson River (so rocky!), Glasier creek (picture postcards...this is exactly why I don't take pics myself...the views are mind boggling and cannot be captured in a pic!), Sprague Lake (there was a girl in my high school class named Sally Sprague!), then to Bear Lake (heard the Elk Bugling...yes! screeching...they sound in pain...and THIS is attractive to the females??? LOL). Also, took the rainy day hike around Bear Lake...so lovely in the rain (and no people!) (the misty quality is Soooo inducive to meditation).

Sept. 05 - 2500 steps, 1500 sightseeing - Lake Helene is sooo beautiful! I'm sure we're going to get tired of that word by the time this Challenge is over. I loved reading all the posts...especially the one of finding Mr. Right and all the meditation going on.

Sept. 06 - 4000 steps, no sightseeing.

Sept. 07- rest day...WooHoo! Didn't rest...2700 sightseeing

Sept. 08 - 2900 steps, 200 sightseeing

Sept. 09 - 1800 steps, 600 sightseeing

Sept. 10

ROCKY MOUNTAINS TREK - WEEK 1- Bear Lake
Ready to go!!!!

Group Two:
Sept. 04 - 600 steps; 421 sightseeing emoticon - the high altitude must be affecting me - I have a pretty good sized headache as I head to my tent for the night. Too many years living away from the mountains! So pretty, though...
Sept. 05 -2500 steps; 213 sightseeing emoticon

Sept. 06 - Goal = 4000: 3893 steps; 0 sightseeing
Sept. 07 - Make Up yesterday's steps: 107; 2382 sightseeing emoticon
Sept. 08 - Goal = 2900: 3447 steps; 547 sightseeing emoticon
Sept. 09 - 1800 steps; 2511 sightseeing emoticon

I've not been able to enjoy the scenery much this week - all my steps have seemed to be made to accomplish a task or meet a need... and not time in between to enjoy the links to beautiful scenery.... Next week will likely be the same, but I love the way I'm able to put more thought into my steps and gain extra even when standing in place for a few minutes. So - overall, the hikes are accomplishing their purpose - to keep me moving!

ROCKY MOUNTAINS TREK - WEEK ONE

Group 2
Sept. 04 - 600 steps. The lake looked very peaceful as we set out on our trek. Looking forward to this extended hike with my friends and family. Loved the trees, flowers and the birds.
Sept. 05 2500 steps to the lake. Very beautiful. During this hike, I saw a chipmunk off the trail and decided to go have a closer look. Took an extra 100 steps to do so. When we arrived at the lake, my son and daughter went fishing and were very excited to have caught one. Before dinner we had a cool swim in the lake, and then prepared a fire. We had a wonderful dinner cooked over the fire and retired early to our tent in order to have an early start in the morning.
Sept. 06 Awoke early in the morning and after a nourishing breakfast of oatmeal with blueerries, packed up camp and hiked to Fern Falls. Took 4000 steps. The falls were an invigorating end to my day. Looking forward to resuming the trek in the morning.
Sept. 07
Sept. 08 2900 steps Walked to Cub Lake and Camp at Lake Bersted. Beautiful mountain scenery, with snow on the peaks. The more I hike each day the more beautiful this majestic scenery is.
Sept. 09 1800 steps Arrived back at Bear Lake today. Finding myself in awe at the absolute beauty of the mountains, lakes, and forests.

ROCKY MOUNTAINS TREK - WEEK ONE

Group Two
Sept. 04 - 600 steps and 2600 sightseeing steps
Beautiful drive up to the lake -- it was nice to take the shuttle so I could enjoy the view. I enjoyed the walk around the lake and really appreciated the benches where I could stop and rest -- I just flew up from sea level and I am feeling the altitude. I took lots of pictures -- I'm sure glad I have learned how to stitch photos together to make a panorama because the scenery is way too big to fit into one shot!

Sept. 05 - 2500 steps and 521 sightseeing steps
This trail took us so close to the snow you could smell it -- all this fresh air and the altitude make it easy to sleep at night!

Sept. 06 - 4000 steps and 9206 sightseeing steps
Took a shortcut across a lake and nearly froze -- the water is beautiful but a little too cold for swimming without a wet suit!

Sept. 07 - rest day and 3129 sightseeing steps
Just hung around the campsite today and wandered into the bush a couple of times to observe the wildlife.

Sept. 08 - 2900 steps and 11732 sightseeing steps
Did some more swimming today -- those lakes are cold even with a wet suit.

Sept. 09 - 1800 steps and 47 sightseeing steps
The bus ride back down to the parking lot was beautiful -- it's amazing how different things look on the way back -- all that beautiful scenery you didn't see on the way up because it was behind

Sept. 10 - Just resting and getting caught up on my Email. The only exercise today was doing laundry!

Week 1

Since there are so many of us of various levels of ability and mobility, I have decided to have 4 groups of walkers. Please SELECT the GROUP that best suits your ability, but in making a selection, remember this should challenge your own ability.

GROUP 1 – limit to under 800 steps daily for the whole 8 weeks. Suitable for those who are just starting.
GROUP 2 – . Suitable for those who are more capable and have been either walking or chair marching for a time.
GROUP 3 – Suitable for those walk long distances in comfort.
GROUP 4 – Suitable for Wheelchair/non-walking members ONLY
Every day this week – morning –
1 – Rock your feet back and forth – heal, toe, heal, toe etc – one foot at a time or both feet together – for 1 min ( or 2 x 30 sec)
AND
2 – “Box” with your arms , punching out in front of you – as hard as you can for as long as you can
OR (instead of “boxing) – if you have an arm cycle – do as much as you can for as long as you can
Every day this week – afternoon – Repeat the morning exercises.

ALL GROUPS - Extra steps you do are to be logged as exploring or sight-seeing.

NOTE: Once you have selected your group and you start the Challenge, you come to THIS thread and POST at least ONCE in the week . If you come more often please GO TO YOUR OWN PERSONAL COMMENT and EDIT your comment with the new information. Remember to:

1) STATE THE GROUP YOU ARE IN every time you post
2) TELL US the NUMBER OF STEPS YOU HAVE COMPLETED every time you post
3) TELL US HOW YOU ARE GETTING ON: what you saw on the way, whether you are getting to the camp sites, what you saw on the way, what you had for food, and whether you are enjoying the trek!! We are lucky that we have an advance party setting camp up for us and carrying the provisions!!

NOTE:.You will only be eligible to claim a Goodie if you post at least once in the week and complete all your weekly steps!!
OR
If you would prefer to write a blog on your Week 1 Trek adventures – please do so – BUT please let me know when you have done this so that I can read it

WEEK 1: A trail starting and finishing at Bear Lake. If you are interested, you can download the map from the photo section on the Main Team Page (look on the right of the page – under the Huddle button is a Photos link in red – click on that).

The Trail route is marked in BLUE. The camp sites are marked as ORANGE dots. The Interpretive trail is marked as the small PINK loop on the first day. I have structured it as a warm up trek to give you a chance to understand that the Challenge Steps required will increase!!

We will take the shuttle bus to Bear Lake. See URL on the shuttle bus route for your interest:
www.mountaindrama.com/rocky/BearLake
Rd
Home.html

Bear Lake is a scenic alpine lake that features a road leading to its’ shores. Bear Lake Road makes the lake accessible and crowded. To avoid the hassle of finding a parking spot on a summer afternoon try taking the shuttle from Moraine Park Museum. The lake serves as the terminus for many trails within Rocky Mountain National Park. In case you are interested, there are pictures at: www.bearlakeco.com/bear-lake-photos.
ph
p

Then we will do a week long trail loop round several other lakes, ending up at Bear Lake again for the Shuttle Bus back.

The trail loop I have selected for Week 1 is 13.4miles. It requires 5 days walking and allows 1 day for rest and exploration.

Day 1 – (Group 1 - 300 steps; Group 2 – 600 steps; Group 3 – 1000 steps)
We will all meet and then take the shuttle bus to Bear Lake and take the Bear Lake Interpretive Nature Loop: and then spend the rest of the day exploring.
www.mountaindrama.com/Hikes/BearLake

This is a video of The Interpretive Loop for your interest. The Bear Lake Nature Loop is one the most popular trail in all of Rocky Mountain Park. Due to its ease and accessibility, Bear Lake is a great family destination with children and the elderly benefitting from its short length and wealth of ecological diversity.

The loop trail begins just beyond the Bear Lake Ranger Station and should be hiked counter-clockwise to coincide with an interpretive guide available at the trailhead for a dollar or so. The interpretive guide is the key to 30 marked spots along the trail which tell the story of the Bear Lake Area. The trail itself simply encircles Bear Lake, a beautiful body of water which rests in a rock basin in the middle of a healthy pine, fir and spruce forest. Take time to relax on one of several wood benches, and enjoy the view.
