I am in this for Level 1. I am pumped for this. I have tried many challenges on SP. I have not completed one. They were too much physically for me. This is realistic for me. Thanks so much for organizing it for us!!!

Its amazing how many steps we do that we don't even think about!!
I am resting my knee at present - but I still did over 600 steps in the day yesterday - just, getting dressed, preparing breakfast and tea and going to bed - doing as little movement as possible!!

Finally got a pedometer today so I am in for the challenge. Looking forward to it. I'm not sure how accurate my meter is, but it is something to count my steps. I clipped it to my slipper today and have been walking around my house during the commercials on TV. I'm racking up the steps. Those commercials are long!!!!

Yeah! I made it Ann - thank you for inviting me.

I will be getting a pedometer at some point, but will be treking on the treadmill at the gym and around my garden whilst my girls sleep. My nice steep sloping garden and the stairs are going to be pretty good at replicating the Rocky Mountain Trail.

I'm looking forward to this!

Ann,

I have re-read your post in this thread as well as your advance Spark message sent to us 8/27.

You mention in the message that if we go to this thread [which I am now in] we will find both "the trail notes and Challenge Rules." I did find the Challenge rules and they did come to the top of this thread as you mention. However, Trail Notes did not. You indicated the "trail notes for week 1 [are] in the second message...so they were easier to read."

But I am unable to locate this 2nd message, UNLESS you are referring to the Spark message itself?

SERENEMOM71 - Each level will have a required number of steps to be completed each day every week - when you see the number of steps for each day - which will be given against the trail notes for each week - you can decide according to the number of steps you do.
The trail notes for the first week will be put up on this thread on 3rd September to start 4th September

Please, please - this challenge is meant to be FUN!!

I will make sure you understand it on 3rd Sept when I enter it up - and I will be on my computer to answer questions!!
The first weeks trek is structured as an easier warm up - and to introduce the concept to you - after that you will understand fully.

The bottom line is - I nominate the steps required each day - for each level - you do that number or more to complete the challenge!!

The maps with the route and the video links and photo links are only for your interest - so you can imagine where you are going!! They are NOT necessary reading!!

So - please keep it as FUN!! and stop worrying!!

I am in. I miss not being able to go camping. I can also sing. lol The Rockies are beautiful; we spent two weeks there when my son was little. He was only 4 and is 18 now. I took so much for granted then.

However you are almost right - slight difference in this challenge
I am setting the steps to do each day - and you need to try to keep up - but they will not be too high for most of you. Also on one day along every trail there will be a rest day that you can use to catch up on.
Remember that the trails will change every week!!
Also - don't worry too much about the actual distances - by the magic of virtual challenges - I have converted the miles to do-able steps!!
As far as steps - you can do them weither by chair marching or walking or a combo of both!!
And I have set 2 levels of steps - one really easy and the other for those who can do more steps a day!! So anyone will be able to cope!!

You will need to read the instructions well - when I put them up on 3rd Sept ready for 4th Sept!! You could even print out the challenge every week so you have it by you to read!!

The idea of these challenges is to walk whatever way works for you, chair marching, marching in place to a video, walking out doors, whatever. even arm exercise counts. Use a pedometer or other method of counting. I use a Wii walking program that counts my steps or hand arm motions by use of the controller.

Then you enter your step count into the thread she will create to count the steps. each trail is a certain length according to the map, so it takes a certain amount of steps to walk it. so when you complete a trail you can claim it on the thread, then go on to the next trail. she is encouraging us to scour the web for photos from the area to post them to our sparkpeople blog and create a fictitious trip journal to document our "adventure" FWIW, Kitty

I actually walked 4 accessible trails there earlier this summer (in June)- it was very beautiful, lots of wildflowers up there then, crystal mountain lakes to circumnavigate, sharp glacial carved peaks looming above all. Wish we could actually go again, see the seasons change. I will try to keep up virtually, walking in our area. emoticon emoticon emoticon

I have a question that Emma or (anyone) could answer. I am trying to understand the challenge exactly.

We will look at a computer/on line at a trail that Emma will put up and we walk in step to that trail until it is finished? Or can we look at it and then go out and walk? Sorry...not really sure I understand.

Great idea! Never hiked them but did get to ski and snowmobile and admire the scenery many years ago. You dear Anne, are a wealth of ideas. Thanks for being our leader.

I'm in, too! Love the Rockies! I've NEVER hiked them before, but driven through and around often! They've been a favorite of mine since a child! My sister, until last year, lived on top of Pike's Peak! So - glad this is virtual... it would be an impossible feat at this time in my life!

NOTE: This challenge will start on 4th September - THIS THREAD IS TO SIGN UP ONLY!!

This is a sign up thread for a challenge that will start on 4th September,
Full details will follow each week but the main idea is:

Chair Marching or Walking challenge

I thought that for the next 2 months – September and October – we might have a different sort of challenge. This is a virtual challenge so one or two details have been altered slightly to fit in.
It is not too hard for most of you - the number of steps in any day will vary but never more than 800. You will be surprised how quickly you can cover that number of steps, and you can do the steps in one lot or in several lots through the day..

I thought it might be rather fun to actually get somewhere with our marching – - so I thought we might “walk” round one of your magnificent National Parks.
I have always wanted to visit the Rocky Mountains – so – we are going to e-walk the Rocky Mountains Park

For this challenge – you can either Chair march or walk or use a combination of both – but you will need to count steps that you do. The best way of doing this is a pedometer – but you can count your steps in any way you choose.

Every week I will give you a new trail to take, and give you the main route details and distances.

You can tell us whether you make the destination every evening – and what you saw on the way. You could also write a blog at the end of the 8 weeks telling us about the walking adventure and maybe include pictures (from the web) and tell us so we can all read about it!! Remember this is a virtual challenge – so use your imagination!!

I wonder how many of you can complete all of the trails. Those who completes a whole week trail – can claim a goodie from me – and anyone who completes all 8 challenges can claim a special goodie!!
