Certain dressings tend to have more sugar like French, Russian, Thousand Island, and fat free versions of other dressing that add sugar when removing fat. Many vinaigrette don't have much sugar in them. You can make fantastic salad dressings without sugar. Kroger sells several sugar free salad dressings.

Again: IF you are purchasing a salad dressing, you will find that most of them have sugar in them. They are allowed in phase 1 as long as they meet the criteria of no more than 3 grams of sugar (in whatever form) per 2 tbsp. SO if you make your own salad dressing and use honey as the sweetener, you must calculate it (ie put it in the sparkrecipe calculator and see if it fits the criteria for sugar grams allowed). Make sense?

with honey out of the equation,i do not know what else can i add to my salad..i do not think my wife can handle the salad raw without any dressing.

Thanks for your responses. Having looked at the allowed list for phase 1 Agave is listed now as being recently added so I guess using a teaspoon in my salad dressing would be ok since I make enough to keep in the fridge for 3 - 4 days and only use a tablespoon over my salad, however I will make my dressing without honey or agave initially for the first two weeks of phase 1

FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION AT THIS STAGE IN MY LIFE!!

Phase one is about getting rid of the cravings so it is the chief reason that sugar is limited but it's pretty hard to eliminate it completely because like salt it it in a lot of processed foods which are allowed.

The irony is you can BUY salad dressing that meets the guidelines AND it will have honey and/or sugar in it. My advice to you IF you make your own, if you choose to add in honey or agave or coconut syrup (etc), use it sparingly for p1.

Technically honey is not allowed. It would fall into the sugar category. The dressing sounds like it would be delicious without it anyway. Artificial sweeteners are allowed.

Can honey be used in homemade salad dressing. I usually make one consisting of 1 teaspoon of honey, 1/2 teaspoon dijon mustard, cider vinegar or balsamic vinegar, olive oil, 1 crushed garlic, juice of 1 lime or lemon, black pepper, is this ok for phase 1? I want to start this diet on Sunday.

FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION AT THIS STAGE IN MY LIFE!!

I don't measure. The only things I generally measure are baked goods. I make it like chefs do. I have made salad dressing enough that I can tell by looking it it's right. If you make it in the bottom of the salad bowl you can toss the greens in and mix it like that. It works great.

I make my own salad dressings. It will kind of depend on where you live. You might try looking at the labels of Annie's Naturals as I think they are gluten free and dairy free. Newman' Own may have some that fit the bill. I know they are gluten free but am not sure about the dairy. You really have to look at the labels.

Surprisingly there are a lot of them. In a 2 tbs serving it must contain 3 gms or less of sugar. Dr. A. prefers that they contain olive oil or canola oil. French and Russian are usually a problem but you can make your own. Check the labels on the ones you like.
