I used to have "dirty neck" but it has become much less apparent as I've gained control of my blood sugar. It is an effect of high blood sugar.

Hi. I have the same problem with the 'dirty neck'. It started in my teens when I was not overweight then. I was always very active in my teen with dancing and running. I also have dark patches at the tops of my legs and underarms. I also have lots of skin tags in that area. I have found nothing that works.

Are you going to try it anyway? The Aloe and Lemon Juice thing? I've heard lemon juice fades freckles slightly. It might have a small effect. I'd be curious to know the results if you do give it a whirl... I'm always curious about everything ... that's my problem. :)

Sorry Nat :( I don't know for sure that Aloe and lemon don't work. I just have a very strong suspicion, because of what it is. But, if the AN has reduced as you've lost weight, then that's a very good sign that it will go away completely once you lose more weight.

thanks Ann..I kinda figured it wasnt gonna be an easy task...I have noticed that it's gotten a bit lighter with my 42 lb weight loss..but just the fact that It's still there is anoying to me...But at least it's great to hear that there's a possibility that it will go away once I've reached my weight loss goal and have better control of my IR...Ahhh..day by day I guess...as for the lemon and aloe...sounded to good to be true..hahaha..

Unfortunately, as AN is caused by excess insulin that your body has not been able to use or excrete, the only way to really get rid of it is to keep your insulin levels under control and lose weight. Easy peasy, right?

As exercise encurages the body to utilise insulin and increases the cells sensitivity to insulin, this will help to some extent, as will losing weight. Many cases of AN have disappeared when the person returned to a normal weight range.

Other treatments available include topical retinoids such as Retin-A which increase the rate at which the skin cells renew themselves, dermabrasion and laser therapy, but I really don't know how well that sort of thing works.

Lemon juice and aloe would be so much easier ...

I know how annoyed you must feel, I have had the dirty neck symptom since I hit puberty. I am pretty sure it was my first pcos symptom too.

My dad made me get my hair cut short because he thought my neck was really just dirty, but I could scrub until it was red and the pigmentation was still there.

I think the lemon trick is probably just an old wives tale, but there are skin lightening creams that are on the market for blemishes. I have some skin tags too and I think those are worse than the darkened skin.

Let us know if your remedies do work though!

ok, so I know the true name of it is acanthosis nigricans (AN) but I thought dirty neck pretty much sums it up..AN is usually described as a velvety, raised, pigmented skin changes, most often seen on the back of the neck, axillae and beneath the breasts. AN is often seen in association with skin tags (acrochordons).. This is yet another disturbing PCOS. or IR symptom..It's like we dont have enough to worry about huh?..Here you go, ontop of hirsutism, alopecia, irregular periods, acne, fertility problems, and many other things..bam, a dirty neck. that cant be washed clean..Seams like a cruel joke sometimes.well that was my question actualy. Does that ever go away?..I'm thinking the response I'm going to get is just to keep the IR under control...but I have a couple of old wives tale remedies that I thought would be worth mentioning...havent tried them so dont even know if it works..like rub with aloe vera 3 times a day,and scrub with lemon..what do you guys think?..
