Possible infections have come to the fore recently. In summer 2017, my white blood count (WBC) dropped out of range at the low end. Until it went out of range, I had not noticed the downward trend that had been underway for some time.

I was eventually referred to hematology as the situation got worse. Hematology tried for a year to determine a cause and eventually gave up.

My understanding based on discussions with the nutritionist supporting me is that bloodwork can come back negative for infection; but, it does not necessarily mean there is not a chronic infection present. Apparently, there are different tests for acute versus chronic infection. I was tested for acute infections which I clearly do not have.

I have a history of past infections. I had mononucleosis in my teens. Mono is primarily caused by the Epstein Barr Virus which is a member of the herpes virus family. The Epstein Barr Virus is also the first described oncovirus (cancer causing virus).

Chronic inflammation made its way into my awareness in November 2015. It has recently become apparent that adrenal stress is contributing to my present health challenges. So, the nutritionist strongly suspects underlying chronic infection.

To address this I was recently advised to begin supplementing with Lauricidin. Lauricidin or monolaurin is a medium chain triglyceride derived from coconut oil. Here is a link to the product I have been using:

www.lauricidin.com/

This product is apparently used by many with candidiasis infections or persistent yeast infections. Thankfully, persistent yeast infections have not been a part of my experience. To the best of my knowledge, candidiasis is not an issue for me.

The low white blood count was certainly an indication that my immune function had been compromised. Maintaining a healthy gut balance has also been a challenge for me.

Not much experience with the Lauricidin, yet. We shall see how its use plays out.

Another thing that really excites me about the Lauricidin is the research supporting its antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal ability. I have extreme allergies to several broad classes of antibiotics. Knowing that there is another natural alternative available to support my immune health thrills me!

This thread has been established to discuss Infections:

6. Infections

There are many different chronic infections linked with autoimmune thyroid problems. These include H pylori, Epstein Barr Virus, Hepatitis C, and others. Treating the underlying infection is the goal along with stabilizing and supporting healthy thyroid function. Keep in mind, chronic infections often cause significant chronic inflammation and adrenal stress. This contributes to the feedback system that shuts thyroid function that we discussed at the beginning of the article.
