You just tried it, didn't you LOL!

It is because when you hum, you are actually exhaling, so if both your mouth and your nose is closed, the air can't escape. ... So, although you can hum for a very brief few second or two, you will be forced to open your mouth and catch your breath.

One reason everyone complains about the quality of airplane food is because your sense of taste and smell decrease 30% (and some claim up to 50%) during high altitude flights.

Caused by lack of humidity, lower air pressure, and the background noise inside the plane.

When you sneeze, the particles ejected out of your nostrils are traveling at 100 miles per hour. This is faster than the maximum run speed of a cheetah which is roughly 70-75 miles per hour. And that one sneeze can travel from 19 to 26 feet.

These two facts should help everyone understand why wearing a mask in these Covid-19 times is so very important.

Normally, proper sneezing etiquette is to:
1. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze
2. Throw used tissues in the trash.
3. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow, not your hands.

But, these are not normal times and extra precautions are needed hence the wearing of a mask will help protect you from the virus, and at the same time, wearing a mask will help protect others around you especially if you are sick.

Do you talk with your hands? According to the book The Winner’s Brain, hand gestures help boost our memory, because when we speak and gesture, we’re encoding memories verbally and physically, which improves our ability to recall them later.

A new study touts the benefits of honey for treating common coughs and colds. Experts at Oxford University found that honey was better at relieving coughs, sore throats and congestion, with no harmful side effects. On average -- honey was 36 per cent more effective at reducing cough frequency and cut cough severity by 44 per cent or more.

It also appeared to reduce the time it takes to recover from a cough or cold by up to two days. The study's authors hope using honey for upper respiratory tract infections could reduce the overprescription of antibiotics.

Broccoli is manmade. It was bred out of the wild cabbage plant, Brassica oleracea. It was cultivated to have a specific taste and flavour that was more palatable to people. Cauliflower and brussels sprouts are manmade too.

The healthiest bread is sourdough. Research shows it’s the most commonly eaten bread among centenarians in ‘blue zones.’ Not only is sourdough filling, the fermentation process used to make it introduces probiotics that reduce the harmful effects of consuming gluten.

Drinking tea? Let it steep at least 5 minutes before drinking. A study found that’ll release double the antioxidants linked to lowering our risk for diseases, compared to when you start sipping after only 2 minutes.

When exercising, remember your sweat level does not indicate calories burned. Because sweat’s #1 job is to cool the body & some bodies need more cooling than others. But if you’re fit, your efficient muscles may produce less sweat – no matter how hard you exercise.

Did you know ...

Fresh snow absorbs sound. As snowflakes stack up, there’s more space left between them. With all that space, sound is unable to bounce off snow as easily as hard surfaces – and that’s why it gets so quiet when it snows. If the surface melts and refreezes, the snow becomes smooth and hard. Then the surface will help reflect sound waves.

Himalayan Salt

A long time ago, layers of sea salt crystals deep within the Himalayan mountain range were blanketed by lava. Many experts believe that this lava coating has helped keep the salt clean, pure, and free of environmental pollutants. Somehow, over the course of many years, this mix of red, pink, and white salt has made its way to gourmet food markets and dinner tables across the country.

Another use is that it stimulates circulation.

Before your next shower, mix some Himalayan salt with coconut oil and an essential oil of your choosing, and use this as a scrub. The massaging will help improve circulation and relax your muscles, and the salt acts as a natural exfoliant. Given that this salt has so many healing properties, it’s a soothing experience for the mind and the body.

Zap your zits by using aspirin.

Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, aspirin can help reduce redness and inflammation caused by pimples. Crush an aspirin pill and add a small amount of water to make a paste. Leave the paste on affected areas for 10 minutes or so before washing off.

Amazing Uses for Epsom Salts

Epsom salt is a natural exfoliant and anti-inflammation remedy. Try it as a treatment for dry lips. Combine a few tablespoons of salt with a teaspoon of petroleum jelly and gently rub the solution onto lips. This helps remove dead skin and will make your lips look fuller and healthier.

Fidgeting Is Good Medicine!

When you are sitting for a long stretch, like at work or on a flight, experts advise walking every hour to reduce the risk of dangerous blood clots. But fidgeting may be a good alternative. In a University of Missouri study people who sat for 3 hours but tapped one foot for 60 seconds every 4 minutes had an increase in blood flow in that leg that was enough to prevent a decline in arterial function, a risk factor for blood clots.

An added bonus:

So fidget! Fidget at your desk, fidget at the bus stop, fidget anywhere you are! Just FIDGET!!!

Short Exercise - 'Exercise Snacking'

Forget the gym! The quickest way to get back in shape after the holidays could be short bursts of physical activity throughout the day. Scientists say so-called "exercise snacking" better controls blood sugar than one longer, continuous workout.

James Brown is a lecturer in biology and biomedical science at Aston University. He says these studies collectively highlight the importance of making sure we keep active throughout the day and increasing the amount of energy we use up in non-exercise activities that we normally do during everyday life, from walking up stairs to playing musical instruments.

Using Hand Grips Helps Lower Blood Pressure

In a landmark 2013 Hypertension report on alternative ways to lower blood pressure, researchers conformed that hand-grip exercises can reduce your number by about 10%. Researchers suggest using hand-grippers (at sporting goods store). Squeeze the gripper for 2 minutes at a time, for a total of 12 to 15 minutes, three times a week.

Substitute Rice for Cauliflower

Use cauliflower as an alternative to white rice. Grate uncooked cauliflower into a rice-like texture and cook with herbs and spices for a rich, carb-like side dish.

Kick a Cold With Mushrooms

Japanese mushrooms, like enoki, sh*take, or oyster mushrooms, are a great immunity booster. They're loaded with ergothioneine, a powerful antioxidant, that doesn't get destroyed during the cooking process.

Start Your Morning Off Right

Drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning has many powerful benefits. It stimulates your GI tract, improving your body's ability to absorb nutrients all day long. Keep a glass on your night table so it's the first thing you see when you wake up.

Lifting weights makes you SMARTER??!!

A new study found that people who regularly lift weights also develop more BRAIN POWER than people who don’t. So lifting can actually make you SMARTER.

It’s not a huge amount, and you probably won’t notice it while you’re young. But it becomes a BIG deal as you get older and that weight training helps your brain fight off Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Why a Yearly Eye Exam is Important

Did you know that your eyes can be an indicator of your overall health? Eye doctors can sometimes detect early signs of disease by looking at the blood vessels in your eyes. For example, diabetes can cause small blood vessel leaks, as well as swelling of the most sensitive light-sensing part of the eye.

Brain Power

To keep cognition sharp, aim for 97 grams of dairy (the amount in 4 oz. of cheese or yogurt) daily, advise researchers in the journal of the American Geriatric Society. They tracked 1,081 adults and found that doing so cuts Alzheimer’s risk by 61 percent. The study authors credit dairy’s brain-healthy nutrients like vitamin B-12 and whey protein. Plus, dairy is known to boost the brain’s levels of glutathione, an antioxidant that fights oxidative stress linked to Alzheimer’s

A 2-Minute Walk May Counter the Harms of Sitting

Robin Marcus, PT, PhD associate professor of physical therapy at the University of Utah Health Science states that two minutes is about how much time you should spend strolling every hour to combat the harmful effects of sitting. In fact, a brisk walk could lower your risk of premature death by 33%. Set an alarm for every 30 to 60 minutes and take a lap around the office and when watching TV at home, use commercial brakes as a remainder to get moving.

When It's Time For Bed, Make Your Room Cold

When it’s time for bed, your body’s core temperature begins to cool down in order to prep for sleep. Help yourself fall asleep faster and easier by setting the temperature in your room to 65 degrees – which is the ideal temperature for sleep. Your body will cool faster, giving you time for maximum shut-eye.

Feed That Cold! (And Starve That Fever!!!)

Looks like what Grandma said was right all along!

A new study out of the Yale School of Medicine found that the old saying "feed a cold, starve a fever" is pretty much SPOT ON! The researchers found that when you have a viral infection like a cold or the flu, eating helps you recover and get through it.

But when you have a fever because of a bacterial infection like a staph infection or food poisoning, eating actually makes things worse. Scientists say to avoid sugary foods and stick to small portions of things like chicken and yogurt.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) releases shopping lists each year that detail the safety of produce. The Dirty Dozen are the 12 fruits and vegetables that are more susceptible to pesticides even after they are washed. The Clean 15 are fruits and vegetables that have little to no trace evidence of pesticides and are much safer to eat. The EWG recommends buying organic if you are buying from the Dirty Dozen list in order to ensure that there are no harmful chemicals on your produce. Did you know that drinking coffee in moderation can help lower your risk of heart disease?

That first morning cup of coffee might seem like a necessary evil to drag your brain out of dreamland, but coffee brings with it a wide variety of compounds that can be good for your health. Studies have indicated that drinking coffee might lower your risk of heart disease and overall risk of death. The key is not to have too much. Try to keep your consumption to one to two cups per day, which strikes a good balance between health and not becoming too dependent on the effects of caffeine.

Regular pot of full-fat yogurt licks the blues: How you can keep depression at bay with just your spoon

Women who eat full-fat yogurt once a day are less likely to become depressed.
A Spanish study shows that women who had full-fat yogurt at least seven times a week were a third less likely to develop depression in the following decade. The reason why, however, is not known, but earlier research suggested that the brain sends signals to the gut, which is why stress and other emotions can cause gastrointestinal symptoms.

Low-fat yogurt did not have the same effect. Nearly 15-thousand men and women were assessed with questionnaires at the start of the study and then again after ten years.

Avoid a Summer Cold

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), winter colds are caused by rhinoviruses but summer colds are caused by more resilient enteroviruses. The irony of summer colds is that they can last longer than winter colds and may make you feel even worse. Here's one tip to stay cold-free: Stay hydrated this summer. When the weather gets hotter, your dehydrated body could be a breeding ground for a summer virus. Flush out your system and strengthen your immune system by drinking water throughout the day. If you’re not a fan of the taste of water, try infusing it with fresh fruits and herbs.

Natural Aid To Help You Have A Better Sleep

Having trouble falling asleep? A teaspoon of honey before bed might help you snooze. Honey facilitates the passage of tryptophan in the brain, an amino acid that can help make you sleepy.

Warm milk with honey

- All you need is 1 glass of warm up milk. Heat until it’s a little hotter than you would normally drink it, put 1 tablespoon of honey and stir it.
- Sprinkle with a half teaspoon of ground nutmeg, and let it cool to a temperature that is still warm but drinkable.
- You can make this drink 30 minutes before you go to bed when you start winding down, sip slowly, and enjoy.

Burn Calories by being a "Mindful Mover"

To be a “mindful mover,” take the stairs when you can, and get off the elevator a floor or two before your stop. Walk around while talking on the phone. Park your car farther from your destination. Stand on one leg while you brush your teeth. Housework counts — a double bonus of a workout and a clean house. Keep track of your steps with a wearable, or a simple pedometer.

Makeover Your Milkshake

Swap out your milkshake for a healthy avocado smoothie. Avocados make fruit smoothies creamier so you can skip out on the extra calories and fat you would get from a milkshake and still satisfy your sweet tooth.

Makes 2

Ingredients:
1/2 ripe avocado, pitted and peeled
1/2 large banana
1/4 cup (60g) low-fat vanilla yogurt
1/4 cup ice (about 2 cubes), plus more for serving
3/4 to 1 can (125ml) coconut water, depending on your preferred thickness
1 tsp agave nectar (light or dark)
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon, plus more for sprinkling

Directions:
Combine all of the ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth and frothy. Sprinkle additional cinnamon on top and serve.
