The advice I give a newbie depends on his/her situation, level of frustration, type of goal. I would not, for example, tell a marathon runner who joined to support training for a big event how he/she should lose weight or that exercising for 10 minutes a day is a good way to create an exercise habit. Advice is tailored to need. Since I've led several class teams, certain things that ALWAYS come up are:

1. Do the "Getting Started Guide", then WORK through what is now called the "SparkDiet", whichstage by stage guides us in uncovering ingrained 'bad' habits so that we can slowly but surely replace those with healthy habits. Creating a healthy lifestyle provides solid foundation for reaching toward the goals which bring us here to SP. So before jumping into teams, use the tools, learn what this site IS.... and then keep on exploring!

2. This site is a maze of tools and articles; whenever you find yourself thinking, "Oh, I know THIS, I'll just skip it and get the points"... that is exactly when you need to slow down, read and think about everything as though it is new information. Why? Because our most self-defeating habits are so ingrained we often don't realize the 'sometimes' means 'frequently.... or maybe even 'almost always'.

3. Focus on tools; join only a few teams... and be sure members post regularly, interact with one another. Don't jump into many teams; only a few that truly target your goals or support a specific characteristic as it affects your journey: age, an activity like walking, emotion eating support... etc. If you decide you don't want to be in it after joining? Click "Leave this team" if you are not going to participate in it, as a kindness to the other members and team leaders.

4. For solid information, depend on the site's tools.

5. For personal support, nurture friendships in teams by supporting others as you would like to be supported. With a positive attitude!

I rarely go to a movie theater. The smell of artificial butter flavor makes me ill, and that's what's on the popcorn. Back in the day when I did venture into the movies, I never bought snacks. I don't buy snacks at any time even at reasonable prices. Why would I buy them at exorbitant prices?

Never.

I don't go to movie theaters.
When I did go, I didn't buy the overpriced garbage they sold as "snack".
None of i appeaed to me. Yuck, the very smell of theater popcorn was gross.
If I went to a theater NOW though: I might sneak in a flask of water in case I got thirsty.

Yes, I have.
Worked with an RD on a weekly basis for a year in 2007-8.
Then monthly for a few years, then once a year.
Worked with one again this past year once a month for 5 months.

1. My RD sent me to SP to use the tracker! That is how I found th site!
She said that the set-up is completely ontarget for people with no health problems!
Ok, my numbers had to be tweaked a bit because of being malnourished and having low sodium and having lost a kidney. But still: close.

Working with RD's showed me how IMPORTANT detailed tracking of measure foods is when you want nutrient balance. They had access to lab results and could compare my SP feedback and summary report printouts with those results to show me which nutrients needed adjusments. And I took several daily sheets each time, so the RD's would go over them to show possible changes. In my case this meant adding foods, getting enough of the right proteins, enough sodium, iron, etc. A good dietician will find the SP reports an asset in helping anyone, but WE can do this on our OWN!

People talk about how we need to measure and track. Yup. True. BUT!
What makes the REAL difference is when we truly study the resulting reports and think about how we can improve various necessary nutrients by dietary changes: like drinking milk or eating cottage cheese to up calcium intake.

Last week I had my last visit with an RD: you could say I've graduated, lol. She said I know my foods, am doing the right thing and in terms of food just need to keep doing what I have been doing the past 7 years.

And confirmed to me, to my GP and to my insurance company that my weight problem is at status quo because of my physical limitations. I'm supposed to feel good that I eat right and have good lab numbers, but... I still want to shed pounds to be healthier. No dietician can help me with that problem.

I highly recommed seeing an RD if at all possible. Especially if ther are any underlying health isues that might need to have nutritional back-up either for their own sakes (like high pb, prediabetes, arthritis) but also because medications deplete this or that and certain nutrients might need to be adjusted from the average. Many insurance policies will cover it. Medicare will cover it if a GP refers a patient who has a BMI over a certain number. Other poliies do too: it is hard to find in their books, but does exist.

The one thing that going to an RD taught me?
Truly following the SP guidelines and monitoring many nutrients made me healthier.
If I could be more active, I'd also have lost weight.
Sticking to this site's plans and truly absorbing the articles IS a winning path to health and in most cases also to desired weight changes.

Diet or regular sodas are totally unhealthy.
On the rare (2-3) times a YEAR I have soda, I choose 'regular' every time.
Avoid diet soda totally.
The allure of lower calories in diet sodas hides behind the actual effects of chemicals on organs in our body. Just look at the label to see the ingredients, not to mention 'nutrition'....
What ARE these chemicals? Some....

Do you think diet sodas are good or bad for you?
(the "authorities" can't seem to decide!)

I'm totally confused! They said they cause weight gain and now they say
they help you lose weight! I'm off them and have been losing weight

While it has not helped me lose weight, the nutrition tracker has been an incredible tool in helping me become healthy!!

My dietician tweaked the nutrient numbers to suit my needs and for several years I tracked very carefully, monitoring about 16 nutrients for her use and mine. For the first year we met weekly. I printed out the feedback and summary reports along with daily sheets and some of the other SP reports. In this way, the tracker and its reports became a dynamic 'tool' that was instrumental in upgrading me from a status of "malnourished" to "healthy"!

Why did I not say "Yes" that it was useful in helping me lose weight?
My activity level is what is holding me back from weightloss. My dieticians, doctors and physical therapists agree: I will not lose significant weight until I am able to be more active. Activity is my huge challege. grrr! lol?

No, I don't use it. The food lists have too many packaged and branded products which I don't use, and it's almost impossible to enter the 20 ingredients or whatever for each meal I cook. I don't eat out. It's easier to use exchanges.
