When I crave ice cream, a large glass of cold ice water fills the bill. On a hot day, my body seems to crave anything cold.

Different brands of nut butter may have more or less sugar and carbs. Jif has 4 carbs in 1 tablespoon. Skippy creamy natural has 3 carbs in 1 tablespoon. Nutella has 11 carbs in 1 tablespoon and 10 g of sugar.

HMMMM i'm not very good at tracking my carbs at all; I'm doing good if I would just track my food intake and related calories..... And I love fruits and deserts and currently try not to eat candies and processed items, so I give my self permission to eat things I've baked from scratch like banana & zuchini bread, or whole wheat cookies etc.

Lowering my carbs definitely helped the FS get down -- two days of under 100 - happy here -- but also hungry!!!

Linda,
how is it going with the fruit, or no fruit?

I must have mention my theory of high carb foods being "summer time" foods. So fruit, and grains, and things like that, and in winter (at least a Canadian winter) these are not around and the only thing to eat is what you can hunt, so meat and maybe fatty meats, and a few other things, but not fruit. So in summer people should fatten up to survive the winter.

But with fruit available all the time due to importing from other places, its summertime all the time, and fattening up time all the time.

Fruit:
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Heck bananas don't grow where I live, not even in the summer. Very unnatural for me to eat those. Yes you can twist your mind into thinking that if its natural it has to be healthy for us.

Well poison ivy is natural too!!!

What's with the nut butter? You just have a spoonful or two before bedtime? Or?

I'm always willing to experiment on myself, especially if the result could be lower blood sugar.

James it will be interesting to see how you feel energy-wise and brain clarity as you gain consistency with meds - hope you find the efforts "worth it" and you maintain good health.

I work too hard at all the details of different systems for me - sometimes seems to take the joy from eating and living but then I also enjoy the challenge of learning nd doing what I know to be good for me.

The fruit carbs are really hard to leave alone - especially when surrounded by so many fresh fruits in season right now. Step by step - keep learning nd trying - the spoon full of nut butter has helped lower the morning #s x 2 days in a row - will continue that experiment.

I forgot to take my medications, but I also didn't work very hard at remembering. I wanted to see how my body would react to not having the full dose. I was hoping that I could "wean" myself off the thyroid medication, that somehow my thyroid, which was getting a sort of free ride, would step up to the task.

Not so.

In the end, since I knew I was missing both of those, I simply counted how many pills were left in the bottles to know how many I'd missed over the previous 3 months. It was about 1/4 of the dose of metformin that I was taking, about about 2/3 of the synthroid.

But I need them both. *sigh*. So In the last week I've been more diligent. I've only missed one evening pill of metformin, and all of the synthroid.

James, so sorry with bad report from Dr. Thankful you did not have to increase the meds - just encouraged to take consistently....

That is hard to do but I think the weekly pill box method is best for me and my husband but he "forgets" his more often - I keep mine on bathroom counter where I see it often through the day and night as I am up once or twice per night and get the doses in within a couple hours of when they are due.
When we are away from house, I keep one day supply in my purse and set phone alarm to check myself. Silly little thing that I also do it I have a couple different boxes - different color and change them up each week - just a new color draws my eye to them!! I have the added incentive that my heart meds prevent chest pain and the routine CalMagMag Malate supplement also reduce arthritic/fibro pain so aching also reminds me to check and see if I am up on dosages.

Be strong and of good courage - I hope to encourage you as you have been a tremendous blessing to me !

I saw my doctor earlier this week. I had been hoping that my thyroid could somehow heal itself. Like if I didn't take my medication that it might step up to the task. But I didn't want to stop completely, just reduce my dose.

So I have been missing some pills, hard to say on average how often, but lets say 1/3 of the time.

I've also been forgetting to take my metformin fairly often. In the past I've managed to keep my A1c under control with just food choices.

My doctor had a very worried look. Both my A1c and my thyroid were not in a good range. I told him that I had been forgetting to take my medications. He discussed how to get me to be more regular (blister packs rather than bottles ...) but I already have a pill box with little boxes marked for the days of the week.

In the end he agreed to just refill the old prescriptions for 3 months, and do another A1c test, and my wife agreed to remind me to take my pills (she was in the room with us). All in all, sadly it looks like low carb just reduces the amount of medication needed for type-2 diabetes, and delays things. The body wears out sooner or later, ... and later is better.

Bought some cream today - will let you know how the keto ice cream works -

Very good restful day for me started with all good health numbers
FBS 99 made me smile blood pressure back down to my "norm" 110/70 nd the weight officially down 2 pounds for the month to flat 207# - started recording the tenths instead of rounding it this month - the congestive heart failure scares made me decide to be more specific in numbers. Just felt good and happy today.

Yes, when you can resist ice-cream after a hot day, it certainly means that carbs have a lot less hold on you ... either that or you have willpower made of iron, ... but both are good.

I'm curious about your experimentation into Keto ice-cream. Let me know what you do and how it works. The last time I tried that it froze into a brick. Just not soft enough, and I stopped my experimentation ...

Mmmmmmm - sound so good - I just had my last home-made freezer waffle - might try to chocolate powder next time - thanks for the tip.

I didn't track yesterday - but knew I did well when I was even able to resist ice cream with my hubby after our hard, hot day at market. Going to work at refining my recipe and efforts fo keto ice cream and keep a few stockpiled in the freezer for those evenings of needing but no energy to make...

Breakfast today of waffles (as usual) but made from chocolate protein powder rather than vanilla.

On top butter and peanut butter, no syrup. Plenty of fat. But I'm Keto!

The waffles themselves have oil as a major ingredient. That works, and I think it is because without the oil, just with cream or milk it is too dry. They are still a little dry, but with the butter and peanut butter it just slips down.

Chocolate waffles .. mmmm ( closest picture I could find is pancakes)

Sunday is day of rest from tracking - tomorrow will be back at it

wt was 208.6 so down .4 for Sunday weights [I weigh daily for congestive heart failure concerns anyway but for the purposes of my 8 week diabetic weight loss challenge I will record losses on Sundays] ONEderland is still down there and not getting much closer - but very happy with better FBS.

Linda,
you are doing very well. The very low end of low carb. In that fuzzy spot between low carb and Ketogenic. I view Keto as being up to about 30 grams of carbs a day, and low carb as being up to about 100, typically about 80.

But a number like 50, well that is low end of low carb, higher than Keto ... a fuzzy place to define.

That bar you had the other day, I can only guess, ... probably about 30 grams of carbs, and indeed that one item pushes you around in terms of carbs quite a bit. Crazy isn't it? I'm sure a year ago that would have been nothing. Heck you might have eaten a whole regular chocolate bar with many more carbs.

How is your decent to onederland going?

Today was not feeling like eating much - heat really does a number on my energy and attitude and digestion...
50carbs for 25% of 770 calories

You asked what I eat or don't eat...
Well being celiac, I don't eat many grains at all just for ease and to stop the substitute battle.
to keep the carbs down I don't eat much fruit except for half cup portions of berries
I don't enjoy many veggies
Meat doesn't have many carbs and I have finally learned to enjoy healthy fats so enjoy MCToil in my first cup of tea. Yes, I do pretty much go with a " LOW-saturated-fat KETO" lifestyle now if you really wanted a name for it but I don't test for ketones or have that as an emphasis. I am trying to eat more veggies each day somedays I succeed and somedays not...Growing our won does encourage me a bit!

32 grams of carbs! Wow! That isn't just low carb, that is really Keto level of carbs.

How are you feeling with that? What are you eating (or not eating) do get there? That is a real accomplishment. I had about 3 squares of dark chocolate today, with peanut butter on top, and that alone had about 9 grams of carbs.

I'm willing to share my health and life because ... well frankly I am anonymous. You don't know who I am. Maybe you know where I live, maybe ... So what have I got to loose? Nothing. So I'm going to be honest, I'm going to be blunt, I'm going to tell you straight out what my issues and opinions are. I still have a Ph.D. in theoretical physics (you have to trust me on that one). Though of course you can test me with questions if you like.

Take this for example. Does a compressed spring weight the same as an uncompressed spring? Well no, its slightly heavier. Why? It has the energy of compression in it, and E = m*c*c (Einstein's equation) so that slight bit of energy manifests itself as mass. You can ask me a physics question and I'll probably have a good answer.

Poor memory, brain surgery, diabetes. But on the other side, enjoying life, having the time to research nutrition ...

I cringe at some of the things I did before my brain rewired and healed. Luck to have all my fingers ... really. But I still love math and physics.

James, I so appreciate your "chats " with me about thyroid, carbs, calories and all the things that you seem to willingly share your experiences with me. It helps me sort out thought, facts, figures and myths and helpful ways of eating to live well.

Today was a great day at farmer's Market except that I am needing two canes for walking - R knee and hip just don't want to function today. I sit on a stool in our booth to weigh produce and run cash register and then take walk around the park to buy goods and to visit with other vendors and friends. Home for a good nap and looking forward to visit from daughter tomorrow for Father's day.

I take Synthroid. Also perhaps a lazy thyroid. What ever it is it started when my first attack of ulcerative colitis hit (back in about 1982) and my thyroid has slowly weakened over the years, but has been holding steady for about the last 6 or so years (since Keto?).

I tried to wean myself off of them, and my hands felt cold. I didn't seem to have less energy, otherwise I felt OK. Someday I may just try to stop and see what the blood tests show. I just don't have the nerve for that right now.

Atkins bars ... Ha? (that was an exclamation mark, my exclamation mark has a bread cumb under it ... oh no, not a bread crumb, and to tell the truth my exclamation mark is actually working and there was no bread crumb!)

Atkins bars ... Ha! Yes those marketing folks have come up with some "interesting" ways of counting. In Canada the front of the box says something like "2g Net Atkins Count (TM)", and you think grams and see the word "net" and think "net carbs", but they didn't really say that, and then there is the (TM) trade mark, so they have invented their own kind of grams.

The back of the box has the real nutrition information, about 20 grams of carbs per bar. I think the US boxes may say things like "2g Net Carbs", virtually lying, well outright lying. But the nutrition label probably still tells the truth. I once ate 4 of those in a day thinking only 4 times 2, or 8 grams of carbs, yum. Blood sugar was way way to high. I had really eaten 80 grams, plus the other food during the day, about 110 grams, and I can't handle that much at all.

As for calories, I think the body has an almost magical way to adjust to calories being lower. I don't know what it does, but it gets super efficient. I wouldn't go below 1600 a day (roughly). So I agree with those article on not going too low on the calories.

Sort of like people with lots of money find ways to be wasteful (not read price labels when grocery shopping, get a leased car rather than buying one, have expensive and mostly unused TV packages ...). People with little money tend to get the most out of their money (comparison shop, buy items that are on sale and avoid those that aren't, buy bigger quantities so the unit price is lower ...). Why not eat more and let your body be wasteful of its calories?

Welcome to my world of slow metabolism.... lazy thyroid but not low enough to take meds Dr says - I have been this way most of my life and family heritage of the same.

Thursday"s report ...I enjoyed an Atkin's "indulge" bar yesterday at Market "net carbs 3" says the label but fine print :170calories, 19Carb, 8sugar alcohols, 8fibers, 12fats & 5proteins
Sparks tracking [not 'Net carbs] 75carb=23% of 1255 calories...

Fri am scales down 1# yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo
Friday 59 carbs is 22% of 1063cal. I keep seeing articles referring to not keeping calories too low nd I wonder but not sure I am willing to go higher than 1500 and seem to feel best at 1200 with some low cl days down to 500 thrown in - I was trying to alternate them but summer schedule is about to go full force and not home to eat carefully planned meals all the time and mix of tired and irregular schedule tends to really confuse lower than 1200. What think ye ! [my question mark key is not working!!!]

Should have been a high calorie day but only 790 - no appetite yet - getting in better protein today and did have a few berries - did some research on nut butters since nuts are often mentioned in the lists of thing to eat - No chewing teeth so butters works well for me - But not as much fun with no breads - might try some the I enjoy nut butters by the spoonful from the jar too!! keto pancakes and use them as bread for Peanut butter sandwich!

Yes, that is always in the back of my mind - not overwhelming but a true goal for me.

Started fibromyalgia meds last night and got 4 good hours of restorative sleep - kind of dopey today but from past experiences with this , I know it takes a few days for the equalization to happen between pain, sleep and healthy feeling.

Low calorie day - 27carbs=16% of 339 calories ... feeling positive about efforts - just resting a lot and thankful the headache has eased.

Grandkids have friends whose mother was in for minor surgery. Just day surgery for gall bladder.

She was out, but it think it was still nice to give her a break. So the wife and I and 6 kids ages 8 to 14. Fed them protein powder waffles for breakfast. Only one of them knew it was protein powder because he had asked for waffles the day before, and I told him what was possible.

He was happy with it, but said don't tell my brother, he's a picky eater. We didn't tell his brother, and his brother ate and enjoyed them.

LINDAF49,
great on the waffles!

Its so hard to make a low carb version of a high carb thing, and have it turn out to be "as good". My daughter's comment was "they're not exactly the same", and with a negative sort of undertone.

No, not exactly the same. On the other hand, one can look at it as slightly different, and just as good. Compared to store bought frozen waffles that you put in the toaster, I find them actually better.

For those of us who are carb conscious, or have a carb budget per day, this really makes a difference. Practically zero.

When I did consulting work, we had a daily maximum for food that we would get re-imbursed for. If we went to a more expensive restaurant, maybe a steak house or something, then we would have to pay for anything over and above the limit. Fair enough, you still need to eat, even if at home. But I made it work with nice restaurants, and stay just under budget.

But what I learned from Larry was to book a hotel that had a buffet breakfast included, and this only showed up in the expenses as the cost of the overnight hotel (sort of like this near zero carb breakfast), and so the daily limit on food re-imbursement was now over 2 meals, and got you some rather nice things (sort of like having your carb budget go to lunch and supper).

Yes - my new kitchen scales have grams - I have been using them when building salads and other dishes - putting the bowl on then adding each ingredient and noting the totals then sitting down and doing the mat and enter it into the Spark tracking. So the recipe will work fine -

Today was low cal day - 20carbs = 16% of my 500 calories ... tomorrow I get 1200 so waffles for breakfast!!!

I hope you can figure out the grams. By the way, it seems to work better in a waffle maker. Just don't wait until the light goes on to say its done, it seems to be done before that.

Waffles just work better than pancakes with the batter recipe that I gave you.
emoticon

Let me know what you think. Its not going to be exactly the same as a wheat pancake or waffle, low carb things are never exactly the same. But at about 1/2 gram of carbs per waffle, compared to about 15 grams of carbs per waffle for a similar one bought from the frozen food section, its fantastic. Plus its actually pretty good in taste.

I get 1.5 grams of carbs in 3 waffles, rather than 45 from the store bought ones. 45 is about double my daily quota.

Linda,
do you have protein powder? I like "whey" protein, made from cow's milk. There are two reasons for this, first it is a complete protein, and has a near perfect balance of amino acids (snippets of a protein). A protein is a long chain of various amino acids, and we need a bunch of them for good health.

Plants sometimes have protein, like soy, but are missing some amino acids that we need. I think that is why vegetarians mix protein sources, to improve the balance, even if they don't know why they mix, I think that is it.

So, I use vanilla flavoured whey protein. Here is the recipe:
- 80 grams vanilla whey protein
- 1/4 teaspoon baking powder

I mix the two dry ingredients well, then add:
- 40 grams oil
- 40 grams whipping cream, or higher fat milk
- 2 eggs

All mixed together and you have the batter. Works perfect in my waffle iron, and no need to grease the waffle iron as there is enough oil in the batter. I also use this for pancakes, but I do spray oil the pan, even though it is a non-stick pan. I make small pancakes as the consistency is not quite the same as regular ones.

In the end, each pancake has less than half a gram of carbs, so I can eat as many of them as I like and not worry about that. My syrup is not regular syrup, it is a low carb one, the lowest one I can find, so the syrup adds more carbs that the pancakes ever do. Mine is "E.D. Smith, no sugar added syrup".

Oh yes, the second reason I don't use other types of protein powder, other than whey protein, is that the pancakes get very strange. Like pea protein ... pancakes end up getting to taste too "earthy" like peas ... no thanks.

Please share your recipe - I can't smell so would never notice! HaHa - will ask hubby if he notices - he really prefers "real ones" but will take "Health food ones" as long as he can have real syrup on them!
26carbs today for 9% of 1209calories - had some non-dairy yogurt and strawberries - delicious!

Off to make some protein powder waffles. They stink up the house (so my wife tells me, though I think it smells OK).

She is still sleeping ... so its the best time to do this.

My thoughts on MY EGG FAST. I followed the guidelines pretty close - did add my Tbsp of Chia seeds daily and Tsp of Metamucil or psyllium powder each day which added carbs but not net carbs and "kept me regular"
.I did not expect huge losses like some have because my diet was already pretty strictly regimented and kind of gentle keto-oriented though not as low of carbohydrates.
I will weight each of the three days afterward and then show that result next Monday.
Things I feel I learned:
1. How it fees to truly NOT be hungry on several days and Thursday and Friday in particular.
2. Though a little high percent of daily saturated fats - I feel it was still fairly heart-stent friendly at right around half of my fats each day being saturated.
3. I was very pleased with lack of hunger and cravings [with exception of Wednesday morning] - I wanted Chocolate but it was loneliness for a friend rather than frantic craving as I have experienced in the past.
4. I still love eggs, but the beef paddy for dinner tonight was sure good!!! Was were salad greens!
5. I would do this again - maybe once a month at the most - not sure it will work well with our summer schedule of living though I definitely see this as a potential for the week after a vacation to get back into good control mode. I see it as a solidly healthy week for me and my level of medical needs, health goals and style of living.

Day 5 Egg Fast [low carb effort for PRE-DIABETES : 11carbs for 4% of 1167 calories 5 fibers so 6 Net Carbs]
B - Pint Green tea with slice ginger, .5TbspMCT and stevia
2 scrambled eggs in butter with 2 oz Gouda cheese
L - Pint iced tea [oolongtea/ACV/Stevia/vanilla]
1 boiled egg 1oz cheddar stick
D - Pint water with 1Tbsp chia seeds and Zerocalorie syrup
2 boiled egg, chopped with 2Tbsp Mayo and 2tsp mustard and 2 gouda cheese slices.
Pint iced tea - same as morning
Not hungry today and bored with food - just not interested in making fancy recipes even though I have them ready to use.
Interesting that the THM terminology of eating to fuel our body has really been true for me today - I was eating to fuel me - not to met taste desires or social timeing or event.
I AM wanting some good dark chocolate and planning to have some for breakfast with my transition 2 egg scramble.

I'm going to look at the USDA site and compare to nutritiondata. Not because I think there are going to be differences in the information, but to see overlap and non-overlap, and to see if I like one format more than the other.

Day 4 Egg Fast
[low carb effort 21carb = 6% of 1375cal. w/12fibers= 9 NET carbs]
Morning tea with 1Tbsp Ghee instead of MCT - pretty good!!
B - 2 scrambled eggs in butter with 2 oz Gouda cheese slices
Pint water with chia seed and ZeroCalorie blueberry syrup
Sn - 1 boiled egg - 1Tbsp mayo - I oz cheddar cheese stick
Pint Homemade Mocha with iced coffee, cocoa protein powder, vanilla, stevia
Sn - I boiled egg - 1 mozzarella stick
Pint water with fresh lemon juce and stevia and ice
D - 2 boiled eggs - 1 Tbsp butter - [wanting to change up deviled eggs a bit] Felt good on chapped lips from sunburn!!!
This was first Farmer's Market day for us and I forgot about sun screen so cheeks and lips are pretty sunburned. Did well physically with planned foods and liquids - sold all the big salad cucmbers, rhubarb and hydroponic leaf lettuce that we took. Good to be back with our "Marketing family" and customers. Using 1/8 to 14tsp. of sea salt in each pint of liquids for electrolytes - sweating a bit extra outside in heat and wind - will have extra pint of electrolyte water at bedside if I need it during the night for leg cramps. Yep, needed it at 2am!

Linda,
my nutritional "Bible" is the "nutritiondata" website. While they have a search field on the site, it often finds too many hits. So I google the website name with the thing of interest, and let google find the page. So googling:
"nutritiondata eggs"

One quickly finds:
nutritiondata.self.com/facts/
dairy-and
-egg-products/120/2

and setting the quantity to "1 large", you find 1.3 grams of carbs.

All meat is lower than that, but so what? Meat is pretty near zero. But you need veggies too. If you ate cooked broccoli, you'd find that half a cup of that has about 6 grams of carbs, about the same as a half dozen eggs, and that is only half a cup of broccoli.

So don't be worried about the carbs in eggs, its very low. If you want more accurate nutrition information, just have a look at nutritiondata.

Day 1 of an egg fast : 9carbs =3% of 1111calories + too many sat fats and no citrus to help liver with it - hmmmm may just add lemon to my water jug??? Sparks says eggs have some carb where a lot of other counters say none???? Will see how the other parameters show - like sleep, congestive heart symptoms or inflammation. My food included 17 cups of water, diluted tea; 6 eggs, 2.5oz cheddar cheese, 1 tbsp. butter, 2.5Tbsp Mayo, 1 Tbsp chia seed, stevia sweetener in tea meds and supplements.

I like to have 1200 - but remember I am pretty sedentary - working to get steps up to 2000 steps a day many days -
Just kind of go from chair to chair and simple kitchen work and then a trip or two up and down the stairs but they are very slow! My best exercise is still pushing a grocery cart in the stores. I don't go real fast but a lot of aisles I literally just walk from one end to the other but I go up and down every one of them and that is only one or two days a week. The Walmart trips are more stop and go and DO NOT try to do every row as it is too much!!! The floor is smooth safe surface when you can't feel what you are walking on! and the cart is good support!

Linda,
" 50 out of 902 " calories from carbs? That is only about 12 grams of carbs (12 times 4 is 48). Are you really eating so few carbs? Thats below what I eat, which is in the 20 to 25 range, which I think is very low.

Also 902 calories? I've seen lots of folks post that they eat more than that, and that eating lower doesn't promote weight loss. So in my mind 1600 is more like "it".

Day of rest for me today after my traveling yesterday - drove 2.5 hours each way, explored a new -to-me Grocery Outlet store and then the purpose of the trip was lunch with a dear friend that moved away so we agreed to "Meet in the middle" before summer gets too busy. Had the best Salad bar meal at a lovely new restaurant! Harsh driving conditions coming home with spells of cloudburst rain that almost forced me to stop driving ...then cleared near the mountain pass and a large moose came out of the brush and ran along side the car and road for a mile or so before returning to the brush - kind of scary!!! They seem so huge! I was very weary when I got home and needed a little Tylenol PM for rest last night and then rest today [ fibromyalgia pattern of living: extend a bit one day and recover for 1-3 days.] Doing pretty well.

Today's carbs are back at 50 out of 902 calories and 21% - I get a bit discouraged but then remind myself this is learning for a lifetime and 69 years of carb eating is hard to break. Learning new way to think as well as eat!!!

Linda,
its not that I'm anti-carb, ... sort of not anti-carb.

But what I have issue with is how industrialized the production of carbs has become. Sugar for example is carbs distilled on an industrial scale. Like pure cocaine. If you go back even 400 years, just how common would white sugar have been? What sweet things would there be?

Imagine living in Portugal in the time that Christopher Columbus headed off to sea. Were people putting sugar in their coffee? Eating chocolate cake with icing?

No.

Next mini-essay ... related to exercise.

I love the reasons for LOW carb stacking up!!!! It is encouraging that maybe all of this is worth it but then I see my fruit and bread and WANT them! ... Nut butters are pretty good though and berries and learning to enjoy Chia seeds....progressing!!!

Going on a day trip tomorrow - out to lunch planning a large salad and Iced tea and will take my stevia packets. the challenge will be the driving time as I like to snack whenever I am driving - hoping the ice water will serve the purpose - will take jar of cashew butter with me too. 2.5 hours going and coming.

PART 3

CARBOHYDRATE RESTRICTION
==========================

First a little fun ... copies of copies of copies, and loss of information leading to aging. Here is a clip from an old movie, "Multiplicity" where he makes a copy of himself to get more work done, and the copy decides to make a copy of itself, and so on. Each time with less integrity. Enjoy.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=SH2XDPI5664

Now for the good news, it looks like excess carbs may contribute to telomeric fraying, not food in general.

OK, telomeres and loss of "information" in DNA with repeated copying is one theory of aging. There are others, but I subscribe to this one.

So eating less seems to reduce this "fraying" of DNA, leading to longer (though perhaps hungrier life).

Here is another article:
articles.mercola.com/sites/ar
ticles/ar
chive/2010/12/06/cutting-carb
ohydr
ates-from-your-diet-can-make-you-
l
ive-longer.aspx

On that page it is saying that cutting down on carbohydrates is what reduces this fraying of DNA. So yes, eating less does it, just because eating less cuts down on carbs. But now it looks like you can selectively eat less, just eat less carbs.

It looks like you can live a long, and not so hungry life by still eating fat and protein. So besides blood sugar, another reason to cut the carbs.

Smiling after reading your topic - yes - long life and hungry...for certain things anyway!!! Grocery shopping takes forever to read all labels two different friend stopped to talk to me and they said I was so intense when I was comparing things - again called "too serious.". Made me wnt to just throw in the towel and go totally organic, fresh fruits and vegetables .

46 carbs today = 19% of 958 calories and only .half of the fats were saturated.

PART 2

CALORIE RESTRICTION
===================

It appears that reduction of calories reduces the "fraying" of the ends of the telomeres.
www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/0
1/
130123133852.htm

So the cell replication retains its integrity of information in the DNA. So the result is that you live longer, and cancer, which seems to be when the DNA information gets corrupted and cells go rogue, occurs less too.

It sounds great. Just that it seems to be a long, and hungry life.

PART 1

Linda, its taken me a while to come up with a new, interesting topic, that still promotes eating fewer carbs (maybe very low), but here it is ...

How to live forever, or maybe how to live a lot longer.

TELOMERES
==========
Every cell in the body has DNA, and cells die, and cells make copies of themselves, and its constant churn. In about 7 to 10 years virtually every cell in your body has been replaced. Yes the dancing pattern of molecules and cells is still dancing the same "you" pattern, but at a very low level virtually all of the atoms, and indeed cells are replaced.

You simply are that dance. But what happens if the copy and replace isn't working perfectly. Like when you take a photocopy of a page, then a copy of the copy, and so on. Slowly it looses information, get blurry, etc. and this I think is essentially what aging is all about.

The DNA in cells has the information about your blueprint. Indeed the DNA slowly looses its integrity from the outside first, at the tips, and then more. It seems that mother nature has even added "junk" on the tips of the DNA, not real information, but just like tips on shoelaces. Its going to go first with all the copying, but heck, with no real information in there, its just a buffer for a while.

Eventually the DNA looses its integrity. You get cancer, or skin gets less flexible, etc.

......
Next time telomeres and eating.

Good fruits ...

Good sugar ...

Yah right! My thoughts on pineapple, just to pick one fruit. Doesn't grow where I live. Its in the supermarket though, all year round. How natural is that? Not where I live, its out of its environment.

On the plus side, the animals did eat my protein powder waffles. I threw some bits outside the back door yesterday, and they are gone this morning. Those are pretty artificial. It makes me feel better about eating them. If the deer eat them (I think it was the deer), then they can't be all that bad for me, can they?

I think I should test the deer with some pineapple.

More thoughts later ... perhaps on protein, vegetable protein ...

Have not been spending much time on sparks as computer time is going to tracking flood conditions in our valley and in particular, encouraging others and keeping tabs on friends whose homes are in danger. The Okanogan river than flows through our valley is flooding and expected to crest this weekend at or above records set in 1948 and1972. Major sandbagging of homes, re-enforcing of dikes and dealing with losses. Thankfully our home and property is all high and dry - Husband is physically helping several including evacuating a young couple this morning.

I am tracking foods and numbers - just not translating them to my teams - continuing to problem solve why the blood sugars bounce from 95 to 117 and trying to stabilize them on the lower side..caffeine might be another trigger for me? I do like my black tea and chocolate even if stevia sweetened. Weight just does not come off - frustrating but that is the way I am - have carries this weight for 38 years since babies were born and not willing to go any lower calorie totals than 1200 and 500 on alternate days - and cannot even get good fruits and veggies in at those #s and still keep quality fats and proteins...Physically I cannot exercise to "burn it off" either. I do feel healthier since first of year but does not show on scales. And just recently started testing blood sugars so have nothing to compare prior to that except annual fasting blood tests with Dr office.

James, keep teaching me - I read and re-read your notes and learn and then do research to come along side things you share - sure do appreciate your efforts and trust I will someday be able to encourage others.

Linda,
there is a relationship between excess body fat and blood sugar control. Basically you body is trying to lower blood sugar by storing it away (with the help of insulin) into body fat. Yes some is burned for fuelling the body, but excess carbs go into body fat.

At some point this blood sugar regulation system gets exhausted. Its like crying fire and having the fire department arrive to put out the fire.

The next day you eat more carbs, and yell fire, the fire department comes (insulin) to put out the fire. But after a long time of this the fire department just doesn't jump into action as fast as they used to. They get tired of the same old routine. Basically the fat cells, which are there to mop up excess carbs just have a hard time taking in yet more carbs (in an effort to lower blood sugar).

So from what I know, as you loose body fat your own ability to control blood sugar will improve. So keep motivated in your weight loss!

Linda,
I can tell you that I know from experience (not a good one), that 90 grams of carbs per day is more than my body can handle.

I ate a quite a few Atkins bars, believing the "2 grams, net Atkins count".

At 40 or 50 grams of carbs my blood sugar is probably a little high. I aim for 20 to 25. Its not easy, but heck we are talking about my long term health here, and I'll fight fight fight.

I'm thinking the pattern you will see is a relationship between net carbs (not counting fibre), and blood sugar. Probably fairly directly related.
