THIS DARK ROAD TO MERCY by Wiley Cash 5*

". . . is a tale of love and atonement, blood and vengeance, a story that involves two young sisters, a wayward father, and an enemy determined to see him pay for his sins."

Very different from Wiley Cash's first novel, A LAND MORE KIND THAN HOME, but an equally enjoyable read.

Red Rider by Laura Chadwick***** This book is set in my hometown of Weirton, WV. The main characters are seniors at Weir High School. Jaime, a girl from Birmingham, England, and Marc Floreau, an athlete in his senior year, also. Jaime's father works for a steel company in Birmingham and has come to Weirton with his family to learn about steel making at the Weirton Steel Company.
I felt a lot of nostalgia while reading this book. If any of you Sparkers are from Weirton, I highly recommend this book.

Every Last One - Anna Quindlen 3*
Story of typical suburban Latham family that is rocked by a tragedy. Wanted to rate it higher but it was very slow and tedious in the beginning and the end seemed to follow in same manner. Could have had more development of characters and emotions.

Nantucket Nights - Elin Hilderbrand 3*
Typical beach read about 3 women who come together each Labor Day to share secrets and a midnight swim. Quick read but not really believable.

Unquiet Land by Sharon Shinn 4*

Part of the Elemental Blessings fantasy series. Leah has been away from home 5 years - abandoning daughter Mally to the care of trusted friends and working as an undercover agent for the Regent while she attempts to piece her life back together. Now she's back - still working for the Regent, but now resuming old ties, getting to know her daughter and more emotionally stable. Complications arise when she begins spying on a delegation from a neighboring country and a close friend from her years in exile returns looking for her. Fast paced, engaging characters, and a budding romance that doesn't need the graphic sex scenes often deemed mandatory.

I would like to reread a book but I cannot remember the name -historical fiction - The library was of no help either - It is labeled as a classic and is difficult to find - setting NYC - time travel back in time to when the Statue of Liberty was in parts - the arm section was set up in a NCY park - I believe there were picutres as well - An agency sent people back in time - I even forget why - but I love NYC and knew of the places - The main male character fell in love with a women in the past - There was one other time travel book written by the author that took place in CA - LA I think -

Does this ring a bell with anyone - I loved that book and can't remember much else about it -

The Fifth Avenue Artists Society by Joy Callaway 3.5*

Four sisters, a brother and mother living in genteel poverty in the Bronx 1890's. Al are talented in one artistic endeavor or another, but central to the story is aspiring writer Virginia who assumes she will always be with boy-next-door/best-friend Charlie. When Charlie instead gives in to family pressure and proposes to a wealthy heiress, Ginny is devastated until she attends a salon hosted by her brother's friend John in his 5th Avenue mansion, where she starts to unleash her writing potential in the company of like-minded artists. Plot twists with new romantic entanglements, the return of a repentant Charlie into her life, and some shady financial dealings attempt to take it out of the predictable.

Livia Lone by Barry Eisler 4*

Livia is a Seattle PD sex crimes detective on a mission. Sold by her parents along with her younger sister, she's taken from her mountain Thai village, sexually used and abused, and marooned in America. She's never given up looking for her little sister and doing whatever she can (legally or not) to put sexual predators away - permanently. Good premise, but she winds up with borderline superhero martial arts abilities and the vigilante mentality comes through a little too loud.

Interesting introduction to Churchill. The narration was good and the story interesting. However, I felt as though I would have enjoyed reading it more than listening to it.

A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman - 4

A good, solid book that touches on so many of the salient cornerstones of life. It simplifies the book to say that it's about a grumpy old man who's befriended by a new neighbor and a cat, who rediscovers the importance of living. It is SO much more.

In the Company of Others by Jan Karon 3.5*

Another in the Episcopal priest Father Tim series. Here, Father Tim and wife Cynthia travel to Ireland, home of his Irish ancestors, ostensibly for a vacation. But Father Tim can't leave his vocation behind and instead is caught up acting as confidant, confessor, and general problem-solver. Nice enough writing, but gets a little preachy at times.

Good Omens by Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett - 3 Stars
I think I am giving this one 3 stars because it wasn't as good as I anticipated. Many friends have touted this as the funniest thing they've ever read. I am a huge fan of both authors separately, so my expectations were pretty high.

Hillbilly Elegy by JD Vance 1.5 stars
I was expecting a social commentary on the state of Appalachia. This was not a social commentary on the state of Appalachia. It was more of a rant against welfare recipients at parts without propositions of solutions, and a depressing biography the rest of the time.

finished Hihglander's Bride by Lexy Timms - gave it a minus 1

I love time travel with a bit of history - BUT - so this gal travels back in time - ends up naked in a forest in Scotland with no memory - - - there is a white stag looking at her - - and then a Highlander man finds her - OK - then for every 3 pages of sex in detail - there was one page of a very weak plot with weak characters - then back to the 3 pages of "stuff" - and that was the entire book - never found out what the white stag meant but know it must be important since she took an arrow rather than have it killed for food - - never found out where she came from - except that she then ended up time traveling again while she was knocked out due to the arrow in her shoulder - when she woke up but she was not home either and had no memory of where she really was from or where she had just been -- her shoulder hurt and a doc was taking care of her - and out the window - lo and behold there was the white stag - and that was it - so I read it - skipped some of those 3 pagers I can see that it could have been good - but it was not - at least not to me - so on to something else -

just finished second book for Jan - THE OLD BUZZARD HAD IT COMING by Donis Casey - 5 stars

a mystery in 1912 Oklahoma - a good description of rural life - kids missing school to help on farm - poverty - wealth - love - abuse - A "clean" book - sweet in many ways - and rough in others - a different world - I felt as if I was living there - after the ending there was a section on all the recipes for the foods mentioned in the book when a visitor came or even when laying out a dead body on the kitchen table and preparing him - a quick read with the murder not figured out til the end -

Just read "Sometimes Brilliant" by Dr. Larry Brilliant .... 5 stars

We had the pleasure of hearing Dr. Brilliant speak at our daughter's med school graduation. We were amazed by his story.

Larry Brilliant grew up in Detroit (like myself) and attended UM on scholarship and, by chance, wanders into Hill Auditorium on a evening in February 1962 and hears a lecture by Dr. Martin Luther King. Directionless at the time, he found his path. This book takes you on a 1960's magical mystery tour that leads him and his wife to ashram in India. There he is given a mission to help eradicate small pox. This is an amazing story of devotion, dedication and spirituality.

Here we are! This is where you can list the books that you finished in January

All posts need book title, author, and stars; 0 being the worst and 6 being very special.

I want to thank our Librarian for this month, To Be Announced .

I would encourage you to comment on books that others have read by sending them a Sparkmail. This topic is just to list books read and finished in January 2017 for the team.

This is a thread where we list all the books that we read during the month of January and rate them by the system listed below. Please note that you need to list title, author, and your rating for it to be counted. Also, please give a description of the book and how it appealed to you. This is a great way to find new books and authors that you might be interested in. Everyone is welcome to join.

If you started a book in December (or any prior month), but finish in January, it counts for January.

DO NOT list books STARTED; only books FINISHED. Include title, author and rating.

Rereads count, audios count, electronics count. Our minimum word count is 25,000.

Book Ratings:

0 stars - Fit for only lining birdcages.
1 star - Agent was better salesman than author was writer.
2 stars - Some parts had promise.
3 stars - Solid read in its genre. Take it on plane.
4 stars - Better than average. Don't lose it on the plane.
5 stars - Recommended. One of the top 10% of books in its genre.
6 stars - Strongly recommended. Beg, Borrow, Buy, or Steal It.
