It really isn't heavy; the writing is fairly good. Just long. So far--and I am about 100 pages into it--nothing has happened, it is just a description of a family. I read another of his books last year and just hated it--The Thief and the Dogs, so I was a little reluctant, but people said this one was nothing like it. Which was true!!

I am doing a needlepoint pillow for my son. I drew an icon he uses on gmail and it is coming out superbly, if I do say so myself.

I have done relatively little crewel. I did a sampler a lifetime ago and it came out very well, but it just isn't my preference in stitching.

Barbara, I read the description and it does sound interesting (but then again, I wouldn't be getting a graduate degree in anthropology if I didn't find other cultures interesting) but it also seems like it would be heavy reading--and as you said, it's a long book. Especially for a book you aren't that excited about anyway.

What kind of needle work are you doing? I just finished a small stitch-sampler of different embroidery stitches that includes a small leaf and berry design. It was a lot of fun. I haven't done embroidery in years--and never satin stitch--so I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The book I am reading--slowly--is Palace Walk by Nagib Mafouz. I probably have the name messed up. It was written in the 30s-40" and is set in Egypt so a totally alient culture for me. I hated the other book of his I read but this one is not bad. Just oh so long.

3 days later and I have read a couple of chapters in one, but I am still too focused on a needlepoint project over reading! I have a book group this afternoon which I am debating leaving. Most of them get together just for socializing, but the organizer, who basically chooses the books, likes a more fantasy slanted book than I do. So the books are not thrilling me. I'm thinking about just going for the get together aspect and ignoring the books they choose.

Abby, if you sign up for Goodreads, you can friend me if you like--I'm zannachan there, too. I'm not very active as of yet, but I'm hoping to be more active there once I graduate.

Thanks for the tips--I haven't explored the groups hardly at all. I agree with you, though; I have no interest in games. I want a place where people who love books--especially people with similar tastes to me--talk about books. For one thing, it helps me stay on top of the new great books that are out there *grin* I probably won't have much time to look at groups this semester though, but after I graduate I definitely will have to check it out!

I like Goodreads a lot. The key is to find a group that's active and that you can enjoy.

I like the Christian Fiction Devourers group because they're active and fun and pretty friendly. I don't always participate in their book of the month reads, but when I do, there's always great discussion even if I didn't like the book as much as others.

I joined a few other groups like YA Paranormal but they tend to like games more than discussions, and I'm not really into games, so I don't participate in those groups, and I'm thinking of leaving them.

I think it's all in finding the groups that you like to participate in. You just need to jump into a group and try it out for a little while to see if you like it.

Camy, yeah it can be. Do you have any experience with Goodreads? I'm on it but I've not had time to really explore it much. I used to be part of an online reading community which was awesome, but then the site closed--this was years ago and I still miss it and the book discussions.

Barbara, that's too bad about that book club. It can be so hard to find fellow readers will similar tastes to discuss books! I don't have many people around me who even read fiction, so sometimes I feel a little isolated.

Julie, I remember enjoying that one. I hope you do too!

Nan, I spent most of yesterday wrapped up in as many blankets as I could (trouble with our furnace)... but at least I got a fair amount of reading in! Thankfully, today we have heat again. Yay heat!

Barbara, that can be the problem with book clubs. I've been in a couple, and finally gave both up because I felt like I was investing a ton of time and energy into reading books I didn't enjoy reading--and leaving little left for the books I actually wanted to read. It made me sad, though, because I loved having people I could talk about books with. I hope that future selections are better.

Hey everyone. Haven't been reading for a bit, been busy and I picked up my cross stitch again for a baby gift, but I set myself 2 goals for the month to finish 2 half finished books. The unedited Diary of Anne Frank and Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. And finish reading the 2nd half of Luke as well. Gosh, I'm behind.

It's not a lack of books. The book I read was just not to my taste at all. I read it for a book discussion group, which I have been enjoying on a social level, but I am beginning to come to the conclusion that many of the ladies have a very different taste in lit than I do.

Gonnalose5, I don't think I saw your post so I'm not sure what if any faux pas was made (sometimes sparks posts just get "lost"--I've known people it happened to. I blame internet gremlins). What Nora Roberts book did you read? I'm not up to date on her books--she has so many!--but I do enjoy her writing.

Yikes, Abbynormal! I'm glad that the university just put a hold on my account, which meant I couldn't check out books, register for classes, etc. until I either returned the books or paid for them. It took a long time to find--over a year!--but I'm so glad that we did find them finally.

Barbara, maybe try a different book? Sad to say but this is one of the reasons I like having the kindle--hundreds of books to chose from even when I'm away from home. Sometimes I'm just not in the mood for a specific book, and it's better to wait until I am in the mood than to spoil the book by reading it when it's not what I want.

ZANNACHAN, this is a true story.
I used to work downtown in Milwaukee, WI, on the 10th floor and there is a parking structure across the street.
There were 2 sisters that worked with me and someone said, 'Yeah, there's a police car with its lights on stopping the sisters.
Later, we found out they were arrested for overdue library books. Books they forgot about for quite some time.
We couldn't believe it. Pulling someone over for overdue library books. Big government is everywhere.

Hi, I believe my Nora Roberts post and discussion has been removed. I do apologize if that was a wrong move emoticon emoticon

I plan to reread "1984" by H. G. Wells this year. It should be interesting to read again now that we have long passed "Wells" future vision. I must say he was right about many things.

Again, I apologize for my posting faux paux(sp?)

AbbyNormal, I have a bookcase of academic books that I own and a smaller but overflowing bookcase of books I currently have borrowed from the library.... books that would probably have easily cost me $5000+ if I had to pay for them myself (I know this after misplacing probably half that number in my last move and owing the library $5000.... thankfully I was finally able to find the books and ended up just paying an $8 restocking fee instead.... I am very, very grateful to have access to a good research library!)

I'm actually a *big* supporter of public libraries even though I don't currently use them myself at the moment--mostly because 1) it is hard for me right now to find time to physically drive to the library on anything resembling a regular basis (it would be different if my university library had much in the way of pleasure reading, I suppose, but it doesn't) so it can go months before I have the chance to get over there and 2) I have a hang up about *having* to read a fun book on a time table. It turns the book from "fun" to "work" which is why it can take me months to get around to reading a book. This makes libraries a problem for me. Also, 3) I re read books, a lot (54 of the 128 fun books read this year were re-reads, and if anything that was on the low side of what I typically read) and I got tired of my local library getting rid of books that I wanted to re-read (which were then frequently hard to get because they were now out of print). So for me, it's worth owning books, though I do borrow books extensively from friends and family (a perk of having lots of reading family and friends).

But while I realized about 10 years ago (when I finally had the income to buy books, LOL) that this works well for me, I know lots of people who do well with libraries, and I think they are an invaluable public resource. Plus, as I said, I am extremely grateful for having access to a good research library because it's one thing to buy an $8 paperback, another thing to buy a $250 resource.

I am lucky to have the library very close by. I never get more than 3 books at a time, so 3 weeks works, but I can always renew them online if I need to.

BARBARASDIET, it must be great to live in that huge city with access to tons of books. I also can get books through different libraries but I don't because some have a shorter return time and I need my 3 weeks to finish the 6 books I usually get. Also, some are older books that I always wanted to read and I end up calling to renew them LOL. I also can use the internet for my library like you can but I don't because of the reasons stated above. There is no limit on the number of books you can check out but I usually keep it to 6 at a time.
I also check out a lot of CDs. Mostly groups I never heard of to broaden my musical experience. We can check out 15 CDs at a time.
We're so fortunate on being able to have the access and the time to go to the library.
Ours has a huge fireplace with sofas, table and chairs in front of it.

ZANNACHAN, I can understand your need for a kindle. That's amazing, 2,000 to 3,000 books. And the size of some of your grad school books must be huge. If I had your lifestyle right now, travelling and such, I would own a kindle, too!
Good luck on your grad school work.

Abbynormal, I'm with you. I started using the public library about 2 years ago and I love it. I can request books online, and then I get an email when they are available. And being in Los Angeles, the library system is huge, so if I want a book, it is sent from any number of locations to my local branch.

I used to love having books, but a few years ago, I got rid of hundreds of them (donated them to the library). I still have a bunch that I can't part with.

Zaemom, I keep sorting them as I get them... I have hundreds of Kindle books and not the patience to flip through all those pages to browse them (it wasn't quite so bad until I switched to the paperwhite--my old kindle just listed title and author, but the paperwhite shows the covers. Which I like, on the one hand, but on the other hand only shows 6 per page. Which means I have hundreds of page views if they are not sorted.)

2AbbyNormal... not so weird! I resisted electronic readers for a long time because I love paper books, but we decided to get Kindles for a number of reasons... one, we went on vacation and had an entire 50 pound carry on of nothing but books... both my husband and I read and between us we read almost all the books we'd brought, too. I'm away from home a lot because I go to grad school in another city and often stay with friends so that I can be near campus--which can have me away from home almost every other week. A Kindle is a lot less stress and weight and takes up a lot less space when traveling! The other thing is.... we have somewhere between 2000 and 3000 books in an apartment. Libraries don't work well for me for fun reading for a number of reasons (academic books are different) and I gave up on them--now I buy or borrow from friends and family where I don't have late fines and 2 or 3 week time restrictions. But there is no more space for bookshelves here, and we don't have enough shelf space for books we already own (and we have bookshelves in every available space.... even behind the couch and in the bedroom and office closets!) Something had to give and e-books take up a lot less space. We still buy physical books--but not as many at a time. But if it weren't for those 2 considerations, I doubt I'd have bought a Kindle, or if I had I wouldn't have bothered investing in as many e-books, since I'd probably only use it on vacation.

I don't have a Kindle.
I have a few books that my mother gave to me and they are stacked on the bottom of an end table.
I always get my books from the library. Too me, holding that book in my hands is somehow peaceful and relaxing. Call me strange, but I love the smell of new books. And, this is really strange, I love the smell of gasoline!

I sort my "real books" by author and genre... my kindle is not organized at all! I tried for the first week or so but then I gave up.

Kahlad1, that's a good idea, since I'm now on my second kindle and it forgot which books I had read..... ah well. I would need to sort the unread books somehow too, though, as since I have found bookbub I have been downloading free or very inexpensive kindle books faster than I can read them... I haven' t been doing that much reading because of school.

I love the idea of the reading challenges, though this is not a good year for me to do so--that's something to consider doing after I graduate.

I sort my Kindle books by genre. The ones I've read are saved under the genre they fall into and the ones I haven't read are left out. In that way I know what I have and haven't read.

I just tallied my list of books read in 2013...I read 83 books this year! Wow, I don't know if I can top that in 2014! I think I am going to try the 2014 author challenge....try to broaden my horizons. emoticon

Welll, the related question is, then, how do you organize your bookshelves? *Grin* Because reorganizing them is even more time consuming, for me at least, than the Kindle, LOL.

For me, because of space and access issues, I more or less organize by genre and then have books grouped together by author as they fit on the shelves (so not alphabetically), with the authors I'm more likely to read in more accessible shelves than the ones I'm less likely to read. Non fiction is similarly organized by topic. I used to have a bookcase of Beloved books, but I outgrew it so now they are more spread out on the most accessible shelves.

I know a lot of people who think this is very unorthodox who shelve alphabetically, but this makes it easier for browsing (since I'm more likely to go "I want to read a science fiction novel" than I am "I feel like reading an author in the C-E range") and I'm less likely to climb onto office chairs (okay, I now have a footstool in the office because my husband caught me climbing onto an office chair to get a book) to get the books I want.

The biggest advantage that organizing Kindle books into collections has over physical books is that I can organize them into more than one category... so I can "shelve" a book say in both Magic Realism AND literary fiction if I so desire, or Beloved Bookshelf AND YA fantasy. That's always complicated shelving physical books because I have to decide where I want to shelve books that overlap genres/categories, and do I keep an author together (my preference) when their books belong to different genres?

I finally finished what will hopefully be the hardest semester of my grad school experience (since I only have one more semester and I don't have that much left in me, LOL) and have been catching up a bit... on sleep, on rest, on some of my sparks teams, with friends and family, and of course that giant TBR (to be read) stack that I haven't had much time to read in months! Currently I'm reading The Time Traveler's Wife... which I am embarrassed to admit I borrowed from a friend back in... June...

I spent most of yesterday actually breaking up some of my collections on my Kindle because they had gotten unwieldy (I just don't have the patience to browse through 66 pages to find a book I want to read!) and it took forever (I ended up having to do them individually because a lot of the books are free or inexpensive purchases from authors that I'm not familiar with, so I spent a lot of time double checking which new sub category it belonged too. I turned 3 collections into 8... The longest one has 209 items in it and 35 pages, which is still unwieldy--and this is before I buy anything new!--but I can't think of how to break it up further. I also created a new category called TBR for those books that I want to read sooner rather than later (especially ones that I pay full price for!) so that they don't get buried.

And that makes me wonder... how do other people sort their kindle books? Do you bother with collections at all? Do you sort by genre? Do you have a Beloved Bookshelf category? (considering that one for myself) Do you have collections of favorite authors? (another one I'm considering).

I don't like him. The first book that HE wrote was fine, but I don't like having other people writing his books. The last couple of "his" I have read were terrible. Just my opinion.

I just finished Cross My Heart by Patterson...one of the Alex Cross series. I think this is the BEST book from Patterson that I have read in quite some time. I'm just angry with the way it ended and now I can't wait for the next one in the series!!! UGH
