Great job, thank you!

My name is Shari; I have been a Sparker since July 2006, I am now in hospice care for metastatic breast cancer, but I'm not letting cancer stop me from Sparking!

Promise me you'll always remember: You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.

Visionary by Michael Hallford 3.5*

Skeptical reporter is granted exclusive access to Nigel Fox, who is thought to have mystical powers. Conspiracy, lies, and murder. 482 pages. The last hundred pages were a drag and I kept wondering what they had to do with the story.

This was an okay book. It was hard for me to get into it with each chapter jumping from year to year, but it had a good storyline.

The Angel of Bastogne by Gilbert Morris 3.5*

Short Christian fiction. From the flap: Like the fictional George Bailey, sullen journalist Ben Raines is not a praying man, and he has heard enough talk about Christmas and angels. But the holiday movie classic, It's a Wonderful Life, seems to follow him everywhere.

Ben's aging father even has a personal "Clarence" story about a wartime angel who saved his life one Christmas on a battlefield in Bastogne.

In tribute to his dad, but also to prove himself right, Ben sets out to track down the other servicemen who would have witnessed the so-called angel. What he finds would make a true believer out of anyone.

True story of a woman who went from director of a Planned Parenthood clinic to pro-lifer. Interesting parallels between the pro-lifers and the pro-choicers working for Planned Parenthood. There's good and bad on both sides.

Deeper Than The Dead - Tami Hoag - 2*

I've heard a lot of good about this author, but I was deeply disappointed in this book. I felt the characters were stereotypical and one dimensional - didn't really care about them. Figured out who the killer was in the first 3rd of the book. Checked the end to be sure, cuz I didn't want to waste any more time on it.

During the month of February I read two different books on the murder of Laci Peterson...
Laci: Inside the Laci Peterson Murder and We the Jury, in that order. I'm a true-crime buff, and a Californian...this case has always puzzled me. How could anyone be so heartless? I also have several other books in progress...

I haven't posted in a long time but I have been reading, so thought I would start posting again. At the end of February, I finally finished reading Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater. The first half is a little slow because of the focus on the two characters' developing relationship. But then it really picked up pace and became more interesting. I don't often read werewolf stories but this approach was a good one. So many questions presented and even though I knew how it should end, I was left anxiously waiting with the fear that it might not until the very last page. The book is written in first person from both characters' point of view. My review isn't up yet on my book reviewing blog, but I rate in a 1-10 scale there. For a 1-5(or 6) system, I give it 4 stars.

"After Dark" by Haruki Murakami - 2 stars

I'm normally a big Murakami fan, but After Dark had a hard time keeping my interest. The story jumps around between characters and is told by a "silent observer" who is powerless to interfere in the lives being observed. Unfortunately the silent observer reminds you over and over again that they are in fact, a silent and powerless observer.

Had some nice descriptions and a few interesting characters, but overall a let-down.

This one is a good story as always, but the narrator was not able to do 4 animal and about a dozen human voices, so it droned on with not much differentiation of characters.

29) Wading Into Murder by Joan Dahr Lambert 3.5 stars

Professor Laura Morland is back. She's in Bath, England, on another tour (this time by bus, not hiking), and discovers an abandoned baby in the old Roman baths. As she continues on the tour, she's not sure who she can trust as she has several close calls and finds another baby. Still a fun read, but seemed a little more muddled than the first book.

Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King. 5 stars.

I am a huge fan of SK but I had been staying away from his newer novels as I just couldn't get into them. I have to say that this collection of 4 novellas has brought back the old Steven King! These stories are not based on monsters or the supernatural as most of his works are. I would consider these psychological horror stories as they play on your mind, make you think about the dark side of human nature, and make you start to question the people you know. The pain and cruelty that humans are capable of inflicting on each other is scarier than any monster or supernatural being can inflict as in the story "Big Driver". Also, it is terrifying to think that the person you have been married to for 27 years can have such a dark secret as the husband in the story "A Good Marriage". If you want to find out how selfish, hateful, and remorseless humans can be then read "Fair Extension". The stories are extremely suspenseful. Once I started reading, I just couldn't put the book down! I definitely recommend this book to King fans or those who are just starting to read his works.

Zombie by Joyce Carol Oates. 2 stars.

Periodically, Oates seems compelled to write grim novels that explore humanity's darkest corners. Coming on the heels of last year's excellent What I Lived For, this depressing narrative carries macabre imagination to the extreme. Zombie depicts the career of Quentin P., a convicted young sex offender on probation who has turned to serial killing without being caught, despite the worried scrutiny of his family and of his psychiatrist. Convincingly presented as Quentin's diary of his pursuit of the perfect "zombie" (a handsome young man to be rendered compliant and devoted through Quentin's lobotomizing him with an ice pick), the narrative incorporates crude drawings and typographic play to evoke the hermetic imagination of a psychopath; the reader examines the killer's sketches of weapons and staring eyes, and hears him say, "I lost it & screamed at him & shook him BUT I DID NOT HURT HIM I SWEAR."For all its apparent authenticity, however, this novel ventures into territory that has been explored more powerfully by, among others, Dennis Cooper (Frisk), whose chilly minimalism underscores the brutality of such crimes in a way that Oates's more calculatedly histrionic approach does not. This slim, sadistic reverie may be chilling, but it comes off as less a fully realized work than as an exercise from a writer at morbid play. -Publisher's Weekly

How this book won a Bram Stoker Award for Best Novel? I'll never know.

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. 4 stars.

On the surface, Henry and Clare Detamble are a normal couple living in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood. Henry works at the Newberry Library and Clare creates abstract paper art, but the cruel reality is that Henry is a prisoner of time. It sweeps him back and forth at its leisure, from the present to the past, with no regard for where he is or what he is doing. It drops him naked and vulnerable into another decade, wearing an age-appropriate face. In fact, it's not unusual for Henry to run into the other Henry and help him out of a jam. Sound unusual? Imagine Clare Detamble's astonishment at seeing Henry dropped stark naked into her parents' meadow when she was only six. Though, of course, until she came of age, Henry was always the perfect gentleman and gave young Clare nothing but his friendship as he dropped in and out of her life. It's no wonder that the film rights to this hip and urban love story have been acquired. - Publisher's Weekly

1) The Moviegoer by Walker Percy. 2 stars.

This didn't have enough going on for me. I found the characters went round in circles. I also wasn't a fan of the writing style.

2) Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli. 2 stars.

I think I'm too old for this book. I disliked most of the characters. This book is all about 'fitting in' at highschool. It's probably good if you're still in highschool, but I'm not. so, i found it kind of irritating.

3) Drink, Play, F@#k by Andrew Gottlieb. 3 stars.

This is an obvious parody of Eat, Pray, Love (which I read last year). It's not nearly as funny as the cover suggests and in many places tries too hard to suggest it's the POV of the husband of EPL writer, Elizabeth Gilbert. Ultimately, it's also not as rude or off the cuff as you'd expect, with the (fictional) main characters making very similar conclusions in DPF as Gilbert does in EPL. I kind of wanted to laugh more and hoped it wouldn't hang on EPL as much as it does.

11) Zombie Moon - Lori Devoti 2 stars

This is a Harlequin Nocturne book. Caleb Locke is a zombie killer. He is also a werewolf which gives him an edge in killing zombies. If they bite him, they can't turn him. In order to save her friend Allison, Samantha Wagner has been charged with getting Caleb to the zombie lab where the mad doctor can do experiments on him. Throw in some fresh and not so fresh zombies, as well as a camp of werewolves and there is plenty of action. However, this book was not one of my faves in this line. I really like paranormal stories, but zombies just freak me out. Something about the constant stench of death as the author kept reiterating in the book. Yuck!

10) Risky Reunion - Lenora Worth 4 stars

This is the sixth and final book in the Love Inspired Suspense series "Protecting the Witnesses". Eloise left the Witness Protection Program over twenty years ago to protect her newborn daughter, as well as the man she loved novice FBI agent Jackson McGraw. Now that he is Agent in Charge of the mob case that has driven her into hiding, Jackson is hoping to find her, reunite her with her daughter and claim the love they once had together. This was a nice little series with mystery, romance, and action all mixed in together.

With the help of private investigator Zane Black, Kristin is trying to track her down, but is becoming the target of mysterious accidents herself. This series has been really good so far and interweaves the characters from the previous books which is hard to do when you have six separate authors.

In an Antique Land by Amitav Ghosh *** 3 stars

In a leisurely blend of travelogue, history and cross-cultural analysis, Indian writer Ghosh reconstructs a 12th-century master-slave relationship that confounds modern concepts of slavery. Abraham Ben Yiju, a prosperous Tunisian Jewish merchant based in medieval Cairo, resettled in Aden, then spent two decades on India's Malabar Coast, where he hired a slave or servant, probably of Indian origin, named Bomma. Bomma acted as Ben Yiju's business agent and made overseas trips for him. In medieval India and the Middle East, Ghosh points out, servitude was often a career opportunity, the principal means of recruitment into privileged strata of the army and bureaucracy. Researching in letters and documents in Egypt, where he lived for several years, Ghosh ( The Shadow Lines ) evokes a world of mud-walled houses and class warfare between Egyptian laborers and landowners. He also writes vividly of southern India, a tapestry of castes, cults and worship of spirit-deities.

Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher ***** 5 stars

When Clay Jenson plays the cassette tapes he received in a mysterious package, he's surprised to hear the voice of dead classmate Hannah Baker. He's one of 13 people who receive Hannah's story, which details the circumstances that led to her suicide. Clay spends the rest of the day and long into the night listening to Hannah's voice and going to the locations she wants him to visit. The text alternates, sometimes quickly, between Hannah's voice (italicized) and Clay's thoughts as he listens to her words, which illuminate betrayals and secrets that demonstrate the consequences of even small actions. Hannah, herself, is not free from guilt, her own inaction having played a part in an accidental auto death and a rape. The message about how we treat one another, although sometimes heavy, makes for compelling reading.

The Blue Bowl by George Minot **** 4 stars

Loner Simon Curtis moves into the Manchester, Massachusetts, home of his coldhearted, alcoholic father, Richard, despite the elder Curtis' warning that he is unwelcome there. It is the beginning of an eerie tango in which the two men occupy the same space and only one knows the other is there. When Richard Curtis is found dead at the foot of the stairs, Simon, who has long held his father responsible for his mother's early death, becomes the prime suspect. Told in flashbacks by Simon's brother, the story follows the transformation of the reclusive Curtis, who begins to relish the pseudocelebrity gained in the course of his murder trial. Though the title refers to a pivotal piece of evidence in Simon's defense, it, like the novel, has many levels of meaning.

A Thousand Cuts by Simon Lelic **** 4 stars

Recently hired history teacher Samuel Szajkowski walked into a school assembly and shot three students and a fellow teacher before turning the gun on himself. But what Lucia discovers about why Samuel, a socially awkward but very dedicated teacher, did what he did is nearly as appalling as the horrific crime scene. A toxic school culture, in which students bullied each other as well as their teachers while the administration turned a blind eye, has personal resonance for Lucia, since she, the only woman in her department, has been on the receiving end of increasingly hostile remarks from her male colleagues. Lelic, a former journalist, switches points of view between firsthand accounts of the event given by students, teachers, and parents and third-person narration of the investigation, an incredibly effective technique that gives his debut novel great immediacy and depth. Lelic wastes not a word in this searing indictment of a culture inured to cruelty: “Why were the weak obliged to be so brave when the strong had license to behave like such cowards?”

A Bigamist’s Daughter by Alice McDermott **** 4 stars

Her company will publish any book for a price. She falls for the one who wrote a book about a bigamist dad that echoes true to habits of her own deceased father.

Continental Drift by Russell Banks *** 3 stars

Russell Banks compares the migrations of humanity to those of the elements: tides, winds, whole landmasses making their well-mapped, decorous circuit of the planet. One of the marvels of this book is the way it combines such an aerial perspective with particular, earthbound lives. Seen from ground level--the vantage point of most lives--this perpetual exodus has little of the bland and unimpeachable brutality of natural disaster. Instead, it can look heroic--a dogged determination to cheat entropy and death for as long as possible. This persistence, "an old-fashioned, biblical kind of heroism," powers the migratory lives in Continental Drift and makes even their eventual wreckage a source of celebration.

Sequel to Blackout. A bit longer than it needed to be. Even the one surprise really wasn’t by the end of the book.

Not for everyone. This was an oddball book that I just loved. A secret society who take out Bad Monkeys (people with no redeeming qualities – child molesters, etc.)

Monkey Beach by Eden Robinson **** 4 stars

Lisamarie Hill, the protagonist of Eden Robinson's coming-of-age novel Monkey Beach, is a terror. She'll run out of an evacuating car to get a better view of a tidal wave. She'll drag you unconscious to a deserted island with nothing but cigarettes, marshmallows, and the need to get you talking. Whatever her age, she'll ask awkward questions.
Set in the coastal Haisla village of Kitamaat near British Columbia's dauntingly gorgeous Queen Charlotte Islands, Monkey Beach is the story of Lisa and her Haisla community, including uncles involved in First Nations warrior movements, industrious grandmothers with one foot in the grave and the other in various spirit worlds, and the long-armed specter of residential schools. The path to adulthood (and you risk a bloody nose if you call Lisa an adult) for Lisa and her friends is beset by the dangers of substance abuse and family violence but sprinkled with hopes as varied as Olympic gold or, sadly, a "really great truck."

Blue Light by Walter Mosley **** 4 stars

It begins during the 1960s, when flashes of extraterrestrial blue light enter the bodies of several Northern Californians. Those struck by the flashes immediately take on superhuman abilities. Mosley's narrator, Chance, is not himself a recipient of the heaven-sent beams, but after a blood transfusion from the leader of the Blues, his consciousness expands. The biracial, suicidal Thucydides scholar becomes a supernal historian of his new, blue-inflected peer group. He dreams of a "far-flung future, when science is not estranged from the soul" and where human beings will see the world with the purified vision of his enlightened brethren. Still, he is powerless in the face of the Gray Man--a vicious incarnation of evil who seems intent on wiping out the entire Blue population.

A Ship Made of Paper by Scott Spencer **** 4 stars

Daniel Emerson is a New York City lawyer who has returned to his hometown of Leyden, N.Y., a picturesque Hudson Valley village, with his girlfriend Kate, a novelist, and her daughter, Ruby. Kate drinks and obsesses about the O.J. Simpson trial instead of writing fiction. Daniel finds himself falling in love with Iris Davenport, an African-American grad student at the local university. Iris is married to Hampton Welles, an investment adviser. The book records Iris and Daniel's affair from both perspectives and poses the question, is their fleeting happiness really worth so much ruin? For ruin there is a-plenty: Daniel thoroughly humiliates Kate, destroys his financial status, becomes a subject of gossip in the village and inadvertently mauls Hampton in an accident with a roman candle, making it almost impossible for Iris to leave him.
