I work at my city Library so it's all about that for me. I go almost daily, Hah.
When I do buy it's from local second hand bookstores or amazon.

My son and I visit the library weekly during the summer and at least every two weeks during the school year to get books for both of us. My mom brings me a stack of books every time she and dad come to visit. I pick books off my classroom bookshelves, those I get from multiple places: Goodwill, Scholastic books orders and warehouse sales, the library book sales.

I tend to buy a lot of books from Chapters. My mom and my mother-in-law read a lot of the same books I do, so we each take turns buying and then share between the 3 of us. I like to splurge and tend to by the most. I do sell them back at a consignment store where I have started to pick some up at a much cheaper rate.

Yard Sales, the used book store , or www.paperbackswap.com. Paperbackswap is a website that you can list you books you don't want on and you can buy credits and use the credits to get books. I like this website.

I used to buy all my books on Amazon but now I'm on a budget getting ready to move into my new apt., I'll have to try to get some from the library or senior center. The senior center is great cause you just take whatever books you want to read, then bring them back and get something else. No fines, no checkout, real simple! My trouble is I always want to read something that's not available used or in the library. emoticon

mostly the library or trade with others at work
yard sales and used bookshops
a few on Amazon, but that's a bit pricey, even buying used books

I have a kindle, which I absolutely love. I mostly read free books from amazon or buy from them as the prices are cheaper than hard copies elsewhere. I'll buy hard copies only of favorite authors or to completer a series. The library is a no-brainer. Our middle son requested a kindle for Christmas but, I would not fork out the money as he is a teenager. I did buy him a sony e-reader (bought at an exceptional price from best buy) and he downloads from the library. I borrow it and download from there also.

Library - I read too many books to be able to afford them! Bookshops are dangerous for me. I go in and my heartrate quickens immediately. So I have to make sure that I don't buy anything. On the rare occasions when I buy books, I buy online or secondhand or those special offer because I like to make my money go further so that I can buy more.

Love used bookstores, ebay, amazon... There's a site called allbookstores.com that will compare book prices across several booksellers if you enter the name, author or ISBN, so sometimes I look there, too. I've ordered from betterworldbooks.com and they send the funniest emails to you from your book! emoticon

I have had my Kindle for about a year now and get almost all my books there.
I also suscribe to the New Yorker and Atlantic monthly. When they suggest an interesting book, if I'm interested I'll put on my kindle and order a sample to see if I like it. If the sample reading proves good, I will order the book, esp if it's $9.99 and the list price is $26.

I feel good that I've saved a lot of trees. emoticon

I've decided that I need to broaden my author horizons, so I've taken to going to the library and grabbing books at random from the shelves. I've read a few stinkers, but on the whole, I've found some real gems. My husband teases me because I usually have a stack of 4-5 library books by the bed.

Mostly Amazon, some eBay, a few Barnes & Noble, garage sales, etc. This weekend I got a couple of Clive Cussler novels in an antique consignment store. Amazon is my no-no place where I 1-click all my favorite authors to have the books on the release date-an expensive habit. I also sell on Amazon which offsets some of my expense.

Mainly the Library. If I'm looking for a certain title and they can't get it, I may go to Amazon. Unless it's a Christian or Catholic title. For Christian titles I go to CBD.com. For Catholic, I go to EWTN, Online Catholic Store, Catholic Answers, and a few more.

We have lots of books already of course, but when getting books that we don't already have we get them via Play.com, Amazon, ebay and from a store with lots of fantasy/sci-fi/manga in our city.

Library for the most part. I get book gift cards for birthday and Christmas and get to buy a few titles I would like to keep.
I also use paperbackswap.com, a site for free swapping for just the cost of postage about $2.90.

Then, my sister, my brother and other friends swap some books.

Where DON'T I get my books? I belong to BOMC. I also get books from friends who know the kinds of books I like to read. I belong to a audio book club because I use them at the gym and on longer car rides (And that's all my husband will read). I buy some at Barnes & Noble, both online and in the store. I accumulated a number of books that I planned to get to when I retired. Despite reading a book a week, the pile is not much shorter because I buy more books almost as fast as I read them. Since I have been promised an e-reader for Christmas, I will be adding most of my books via electronic mode. If I want it in my library, I can always get a hardcover later.

Like many of you here I'm a BIG fan (pun intended..LOL) of my library. Being frugal I can't see paying for a book I'll only read once. Rarely I'll read a book I love so much that I'll go on Amazon to find a used copy cheap. BTW, I can't stand reading paperbacks, another reason why I love library books - they are all hardbacks.

I love my library, they have library sales, a table with books that are donated that they can't put on the shelves so you can have as many as you want for a donation of your choice to the friends of the library. They also have what they call 'swap' books (mostly paperbacks)that you can take and read for as long as you like. They do not track them, if you like them and keep them it is ok, if not just return them when you are through. I also use Goodwill, Souls Harbor, used bookstores, amazon.com, If it's really new and I can't wait until it hits used bookstores or the library give-away I'll go to Hastings or WalMart but that is very rare. My problem is not getting good books but finding a place for them when I get them home. I love it.

MOM

I really do not love the Library (At all) I buy all my books. Usually from Half.com. I also love audible books and am asking for an audibles year subscription for christmas from my husband. I love books and I love the feel of them, the smell of them. We are turning our second living room into a library to compensate. lol

Mainly from BooksFree. It costs but only about what I would pay for 3 paperbacks/month -- and I borrow a lot more than that! Mainly from BooksFree. It costs but only about what I would pay for 3 paperbacks/month -- and I borrow a lot more than that! They have a very extensive list of paperbacks to choose from and I have a long list of books in my queue there. I also buy at flea markets and library book sales and also get a few from a friend.

Hi All,

I get my books from my Mother-In-Law. She lives in Massachusetts. Either we go down to visit, which she gives me the books then or she mails them up to me. I have at least a good three shelves of books that I haven't read yet.

I wish you all the Best!

I like to use bookmooch and paperbackswap. Between those two and our twice annual library sale, I haven't bought a new book in a while.

Hi All,

I'm new to Sparkpeople.com and new to this team. So far I am loving reading through the discussions!

I generally get my books from bomc2.com -- which used to have the much more appealing name zooba.com. They sell hardcover books for $9.95 and some "premium books" for $12.95. I love the fact that you can fill up your reading list and the books are sent automatically each month. You can also "buy now" if there's something you want right away.

I also just discovered our library system allows you to download audible books (up to 10 at a time). Some of them can be transferred to ipods or burned to cd, it's really great.

Most of my books come from an independent bookstore here in town [Kazoo Books]. Most of their inventory is used, but in amazing condition. They also do orders & pre-orders for new books. If for some reason they can't get something for me [which is rare] I turn to amazon. I have had some luck finding books in Goodwill/Salvation Army as well, but that is more hit & miss.

Our library here isn't a very good one, so I rarely go, except for when they have used book sales once or twice per year.

I sometimes get books from Amazon, or places like Booksamillion.com. But I get a lot of used books from Ebay and Half.com. I sometimes find books at yard sales too.

I'm a big, BIG fan of bookmooch (I'm even a bookmooch angel). There are some American authors that I can't get over here, so I rely on international mooching to fill in the gaps. I also love the charity shops, and my library gets frequent visits from me. Otherwise, I wait for those blessed birthday and Christmas gift vouchers. :-)

Some from the library, checked out, buying the donated and discontinued, and downloading the e-books from them. I also belong to Audible and download books to my MP3 player to listen while I bike. When I can't wait on a new one I go to one of the new book stores. We also trade around at work.

Libraries--the original recyclers. Having been a librarian for many, many years, I was surprised how easy it was to get along without them when I didn't do that any more. But I go back because they are cheap and a good idea. I buy nonfiction, but that's primarily professional.

The vast majority are from the library. I can't justify the dead trees (or cost) to buy a fiction book. Aside from the Harry Potter series, I don't own any fiction books. I like finding nonfiction used books cheaply on amazon.com, too.

I get most of my books from the library. I like that I can reserve books and schedule when I get them, and that inter-library loan is free because my work pays for it.

I do buy bookd for specific authors or in specific subjects at the local bookstores. And I do a lot of trading at the local used book stores.

I get most from the library and trade a few around with family or friends. I don't buy too many anymore. If I do buy one it would be from the large book store near where I work.

Hello!

I usually keep all of my books and read them more than once so I buy most of them from Amazon. But there is also this amazing used book store near my hometown called the Book Barn. Almost all the books are $1 and I always have have great finds. If I have a book that I will never read again I sometimes try to sell them on half.com. You would be amazed how much money I made back from doing that!!

Hi,

I almost use www.paperbackswap.com exclusively for my books. If the waiting list is too long for a new release, I will buy it at Walmart and when I am done immediately list it. It is gone within hours and I get another book credit. I have gotten 304 books from them so far. And I have mailed out 170 books to other people. I am xsfav14 on there if anyone wants to try it out. It is free except for the postage to mail out books to others.

Michele

Have a great day everyone!

I mostly use BookMooch.com - it's a website where you list books you're willing to give away, and other people "mooch" them from you (you mail them to their address, usually by USPS media mail), and then you make a wishlist of the books you want and the site notifies you when someone else is giving that book away so you can "mooch" it from them. I use it a lot, but I have a large wishlist and can wait for books to become available. It doesn't work very well if you need a particular book right now because no one may have it up for mooching at that time.

Mostly from the library. Some I borrow from friends. I like to shop on Amazon when there is a book coming out that I can't wait for (like anything from Harlen Coben!) I also like to hit up used book stores, especially when I'm traveling solo without kids and have time to browse. Also I make a big acquisition each fall at the church used book sale -- $1 a book!

Finish what you've started!

emoticon I get mine from a used book store, Wal-mart, Target, Amazon.com, Ebay & book clubs. Once in a while, I'll go to the library. Sometimes I'm given a book. I'm beginning to think I'll get a book I'm not sure about from the library first if I'm not sure I'll like it enough to keep it. Books are about my only vice any more. But it's enough for more than that!

Mostly the library and I have to go today! I did buy a book at B&N last week and as I wrote in my other posting this morning, I am not that happy with it (the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). That is why I don't buy books too often.

Do you buy them or go to the library? I buy or get some from friends. It's been along time since I went to the library. I get Barnes & Noble gift cards a lot from family.
