That makes sense - do you mean even after the 24 hours, as in doing a complete day of fasting from waking through sleeping?

Or do you mean that even lemon or coffee (or gum or diet soda) would start a craving? Or - i think you mean that...

PS To my old SP friends - It's been a very rough journey... My beloved, healthy, athletic, tall, dark and handsome husband died in August 2012 from a very aggressive cancer... In the many months caring for him I was stressed and didn't "care" anymore, and put back on 30 pounds I had just finished losing... And then I gained even more...

I stick with just water. When I have flavors (including gum) in my mouth, it starts a food craving that can NOT be ignored. If I don't start eating, I don't have to try and stop it.

Hi Erin,

My fasts are going much better now. See the links I posted in the sticky topics at the top of this team page.

I cut back on those kinds of carbs - but i do leave in some treats. Just don't do it a the end of the fasting day...But I did just savor 1/4 teaspoon of Nutella - just for the tastes at the end of my dinner (fasting day) so i am being careful to not get the sugar monster going! I allow a bigger treat on my eating days - such as one or two Jennies macaroons and a small square of really good chocolate - but i am fasting MWF now - so there is some room for calories on the eating days.
But I can't do a full size treat too often, or I gain.

I expect this new plan to work for me - Alternate day fasting - which is basically ESE, but 3 days per week.

For my drinks - i find water with lemon or lime is helpful; also spice e (Bengal spice is nice) - I don't do diet sodas - but I do like a cup or two of black coffee.

There is a nice blog about intermittent fasting called "Musing Forces" - reading it helped my attitude and I got some idea from her. But she does a complete all-day fast - but I end at the 24 hour mark and have a light dinner.

Yes, good luck losing the 5 lbs! I would like to lose about 20 more....it is very tough though. I have a hard time fasting when I am tired too, keeping busy is great.

Do you guys just have water when fasting or do you have some other drinks (coffee, tea, diet drinks, etc.)

I have also been trying to cut back on sugar and white flour, very hard though, it seems like it is in everything!

Have a great day everybody,
Erin

That makes sense - my "fast" yesterday did not go well. I was tired and spacey...It made it hard to do my job...

Good luck on losing the 5 pounds

I'm 5 lbs up - doesn't sound like much, but it feels crappy.

Fasting works best for me when I skip breakfast and lunch, then enjoy a normal dinner with the family. Once I start eating, it's hard to stop.

Keeping busy is key - no time to think about food! emoticon

Hi everybody! I have been gone for a few days. I overindulged on the weekend so it feels good to get back to the fasting. I feel really good when I do it. I have tried so many different calorie restricting diets and I always come back to this! Have a great day everyone.

Janae -

Good for you on doing the one day a week. If it is hard to add another day - then simply be more "careful" on your eating days. Do you have any strategies that can help you? How far above maintenance are you at this point?

I've had a lot of roadblocks lately due to job changes. Right now I'm fasting once a week, trying to find another day to add to it. Once a week is perfect for maintenance, but it's time to drop back to my maintenance weight!

To clarify I'm cutting down right now and I will bulk later. On my eating days I try to eat a largely vegetarian diet which keeps the calories in check. So drop my waist to 80 cm. It was 86.4 on Thursday morning and now 85 on Friday morning (fasted Wednesday supper to Thursday supper). So ESE is working. My PR was 83 cm so it will be new territory once I break 83.

I'm lifting (Turbulence Training) as my primary workout method so I'm gaining muscle at the same time. Once I get to 80 cm I plan to maintain that measurement and slowly expand my muscles across my chest and arms. The legs have grown nicely over the past two years with lots of squats and deadlifts but I want that V torso.

Yes - I have read ESE. Great Book. I now realize from your page that you are not trying to lose - but to bulk up! So - ignore my 500 cal idea.

I need the 500 cal every other day to heal asthma, as per the asthma study of the Alternate Day Diet. It worked for every asthmatic who stuck with it, which says a lot...

Within that, I will use ESE principles once or twice a week to do the 500 cal days. The third day I may do as an 18 hour fast, if I so choose. ESE states that a lot of the HGH increase is in full bloom by hour 15...So I consider it a good option for Fasting Day 3 (since Brad mostly talks about doing only 1-2 fasting days per week anyway - or else it feels too much like a diet. But he does say 3 days are ok)

Well - I need the "diet" - because of the asthma. It took me a long while to finally accept this. It may change at goal - but for now - this is the only thing that has worked and gotten me off meds in the past.

And yes - that was a great blog he had about each 24 hour fast being a mini victory. That idea may help me.

Have you read ESE yet? If not please do so as it has good advice in it.
Keep yourself busy during fasting days. Of course not having to stop for food frees up time to get things done. Avoid fasting on days when you will be exposed to lots of eating opportunities. I personally find it best to fast during the workday for that reason. As Brad posted in his e-mail (reproduced elsewhere on the team page) a few months ago look a completing a fast as a mini-victory. Good luck.

I am doing intermittent fasting three times a week now - on my 24 hour fasting days I keep the calorie level under 500 cal. I tend to do breakfast to breakfast fasts as this gives me energy for the day - and the best weight loss. Sometimes I only do 18 hour fasts but still keep it under 500 cal.
