Today I'm grateful for:

-Doing great this week bringing healthy lunches and snacks (our cafeteria is closed until November 12 for a remodel and new company)
-Cinnamon, one of my favorite spices that I seem to be incorporating into more and more things
-Plans to try a new 10-minute interval walking video tonight, noting for future reference how many steps it gets me (it's a pretty intense 10 minutes, a good thing)
-SparkRecipes, specifically because of the reviews and nutrition info provided
-Friends who will easily take a "wait and see" approach to me doing anything this weekend because of my Friday dental surgery
-Having the three best kitty nurses around; what little helpful healers they are
-My comfortable home

Have a great evening all -
Stephanie

-Friend asking me to kitty sit for her again; Pixie is polydactyl and so sweet and adorable that I love taking care of her

Grateful today
* For the freedom to vote and to be provided with information to help me make the decisions I feel are best for myself and others
* To have gotten my ballot in before I leave
* That I am down to just a few more items on my travel checklist (bills/taxes paid, totally packed, laundry almost done, pool resurfaced and new filter in, dog groomed and packed for dog sitter, etc...all done!)
* For cool nights, helping me sleep in long stretches...ah....
* For, as Mr Rogers pointed out (followed by Noreen and Maha), the helpers. They surround us, in all of life's situations....and often sneak up on us when least expected.

*** Don't forget I will not be able to set up the November OR the December thread ***

Pittsburgh

From my dear friend and Wisdom Teacher Noreen Campbell, whose photoe is in my last post and who lives just outside Pittsburgh and had a family business there for many years --

"A few things I will leave you with tonight as our city mourns. Mr. Roger's Neighborhood was produced and aired just 5 minutes from The Tree of Life Synagogue where 11 people were murdered and 6 injured during services today. We are reminded of his mother who responded to scary news by telling him to, 'Look for the helpers.'

"People waited up to two hours to give blood today. Vigils were held in the rain. Our Governor, our Mayor and the FBI provided healing words and a strong presence. The City of Pittsburgh Police, The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Pittsburgh EMS are all credited with saving lives. There will be more "helpers" tomorrow as we come together to combat hate.

"Look for the helpers. We are a city born of immigrants, known around the world for our steelmaking, for advancing medicine, robotics, engineering, our rivers and arts. We are known as a diverse and welcoming community and we are stronger than hate."

~ I am grateful for the helpers
~ II am grateful for this world, broken as it is
~ I am grateful for friendships near and far
~ I am grateful for art and music, poetry and prose, and friends to share it with
~ I am grateful for opportunities, like last night, to dine out with friends
Blessed be,
xox

Fall colors in Beaupre, Quebec, a few hours north of Pittsburgh

THIS WORLD

I would like to write a poem about the world that has in it

nothing fancy.

But it seems impossible.

Whatever the subject, the morning sun

glimmers it.

The tulip feels the heat and flaps its petals open and becomes a star.

The ants bore into the peony bud and there is a dark

pinprick well of sweetness.

As for the stones on the beach, forget it.

Each one could be set in gold.

So I tried with my eyes shut, but of course the birds

were singing.

And the aspen trees were shaking the sweetest music

out of their leaves.

And that was followed by, guess what, a momentous and

beautiful silence

as comes to all of us, in little earfuls, if were not too

hurried to hear it.

As for spiders, how the dew hangs in their webs

even if they say nothing, or seem to say nothing.

So fancy is the world, who knows, maybe they sing.

So fancy is the world, who knows, maybe the stars sing too,

and the ants, and the peonies, and the warm stones,

so happy to be where they are, on the beach, instead of being

locked up in gold.

~ Mary Oliver ~

Gratitude abounds
* For first responders, who often risk their live to save lives of strangers...
* For my pastor, speaking out against hatred, and sending a letter of love not only to his own congregation, but to the local Jewish community.
* For Sacramento's mayor, who consistently fights for justice and social reform, speaking out boldly today against hateful words, and for rhetoric that incites violence.
* For warm days, cool nights, and autumn colors
* For my dear, late husband, who would be celebrating his earthly birthday today. SO grateful for the wonderful years we had together, and the many memories stored within my heart.
* For finding myself able to love again....

Grateful always...even though I have been somewhat absent from this board.

Today, I especially give thanks for

* all of you...and your faithfulness in the practice of expressing gratitude
* being able to use my hand again. Cortisone (ugh) miraculous in helping with trigger finger and tendonitis!
* the ability to pay for not only my own healthcare but for that if my little dog, TigerLily, who had four teeth pulled this week!
* the new relationship I am in. He is not an Alan replacement, but a man who is kind and honest and loyal and tolerant and not only loves, he loves to travel, AND he can pay his own way!
* a fabulous visit with my dad, who gave my man a two thumbs up!
* Having the opportunity to revisit Southeast Asia TWICE in the next few months! A wonderful opportunity to re-connect with friends Ive met there over the years!

Today I am grateful for:

-A lovely fall day with leaves turning all kinds of beautiful shades, including Beth's Autumn Blaze maple in the front yard
-Setting intentions for getting a walk in shortly (before dark) AND both days this weekend
-Experimenting with making tea drinks at home since my favorite coffeehouse officially closes Sunday
-Reminding myself about The Four Agreements; my most needed is to take nothing personally as what people do/don't do/say/don't say is most often about them and not me
-Playing lots of ball fetch with Rosie today while working at home (and thereby avoiding all the trick-or-treaters and candy at my office today)
-Completing the last of my annual medical appointments!

Have a great evening all -

-for heat to easily turn on this morning

Tonight I'm grateful for:

-My 13-year Sparkversary! Wow ... where has the time gone?
-Chris Downie; and my personal reminder to go check his SparkPage for surgery updates
-The ebbs and tides of grief ... as constant as change
-My favored coffeehouse -shutting its doors this weekend after many years of my hanging there, reading, meditating, talking, Beth selling her CDs there ... what a wonderful place and the memories I hold; yet it shall be missed in a deep way
-All done with my weekly trash duties, now just giving my neighbors time to finish theirs and I can take it all to the curb
-My kitties ... lots of smiles tonight

Goodnight all,
Stephanie

A rainy day in Beaupre, Quebec, the little town 1/2 hr. from Quebec City where Tricia and I stayed for 6 days

Back from the Quebec and environs trip with my dear friend Tricia. Grateful~~

~ the Fabulous Fall Foliage was breathtaking

~ after flying to Cleveland, we used Tricia's great vehicle for the journey, a 2014 Subaru Forester, I believe, which was a definite pleasure, considering the amount of driving we did (5 days altogether coming and going, plus all our comings and goings during the 6 days there)

(Jardin bleu, Alfred Pellan)
~ enjoyed exploring Quebec City, loved the National Fine Arts Museum

~ in spite of rich foods, desserts, and even some alcoholic drinks, I only gained one pound -- whew!

~ managed to complete my weekly weigh-in blog

-for family time, even though it's been far from peaceful
-to know alone time will be needed next week when they are gone
-for tried and true recipes

On this misty Wednesday morning,

Grateful for: the opportunity to take a morning walk and enjoy the cooler air
The ability to take a long-time friend to her cataract surgery after-appointment. She is so happy about having two clear eyes again.
Her gift to me of her favorite ever book, the Snow Goose by Paul Gallico. What an amazing writer. My favorite is The Man Who Was Magic. Wonderful books, positive, uplifting, just amazing.

Love to you all.

Grateful tonight

*That I was able to book a return trip on the upper Irrawaddy river in Myanmar. Due to the political situation, ( nowhere near where I will be ) tourism is way down. This will be second to the last available trip on that remote section of the river. I will have a chance to reconnect with some very special people that I met in January… And I am thrilled beyond words to have the opportunity to visit that beautiful country and interact with the Burmese people once again.
* Decisions are made about color/texture of re-doing pool surface. The plaster has held up 28 years! Longer than air conditioning systems or water heaters… But it won’t make it through another year.
*That my son was able to reverse the gate so we meet code for the pool project.
*That my dad’s assisted-living facility contacted me because they couldn’t find him… He’d forgotten to sign out when he went out to dinner with my sister! That tells me they’re keeping close tabs on him.
* Three nights in a row I’ve gotten to bed before midnight

Grateful
* For my life....that I have been given yet another chance
* For realizing that I have spread myself WAY too thin, especially over the last few months, and it is taking a toll on me, physically, emotionally and spiritually
* For making a huge decision to stop volunteering at the performing arts center that I have considered my "baby" since I went through the birthing process; Eight years ago, before it opened, I set up the entire front of house volunteer program, then worked as house manager, and finally as a volunteer...a huge decision, but a chapter of my life that I need to set aside for now, if not on a permanent basis.
* For also letting go of a book club, a bunco group and one group where I worked with the homeless.
* For still staying involved with a homeless assistance group where I will only work one to three times a month.
* For being freed up to travel, spend more time with family, work on my new relationship, and be available for spontaneous events!

Quebec City, capitol of Quebec province

Feeling grateful for~~

~ hauling two big boxes of great books to the library for Friends of the Library book sale

~ ate moderately and nutritiously today

~ completed lots of errands

~ closing in on being packed (3:15am departure for the airport -- YAWN)

~ checked in and aisle seats for both flights, allowing me to walk occasionally (some recent back pain exacerbates if I sit for too long)

Blessed be,
Maha

Here's the scoop --

I've been going stir-crazy this year, since I've travelled so little. Well, my friend Tricia and I are about to correct that.Tomorrow morning I'll fly to Cleveland. Tricia lives nearby and will pick me up.

Saturday we'll begin a road trip in her vehicle to Quebec City, the capitol of Quebec province, a two-day journey. We'll spend about a week there, exploring the city and environs, including a day (or overnight) trip to Montreal. Then we will take three days for the return drive on a different route. We will spend one night on the Canada side of Niagara Falls, and one night in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. We hope to enjoy the fall colors for the entire trip. I will fly home on Oct. 16. A short, but sweet, adventure!

Today I'm grateful for:

-Deeming October the month I start my seasonal switch to workout/TV nights at home, excepting my mall walks and/or weekend walks/hikes
-Poet John O'Donohue and as so many times before, dearest Maha being the one that exposes me to his beautiful writing
-My company's healthy incentive programs that always inspire me to do more
-Reminding myself to log on and sign up to volunteer at the Arboretum's yearly Luminary Walk

-Looking forward to tonight at home with no plans other than working out and hanging with my three little exercise buddies

Have a great day all -

Stephanie

❤️Today I’m grateful for:

All that’s right in my life and here.

The good health my family and I enjoy.

First cup of morning green tea.

The crown that repaired chipped tooth.

Good books.

New fall tv shows.

The willingness to continue to let go of disappointing relationships.

The willingness to let go of painful feelings and focus on gratitude.

Mazzy

grateful
-for energy to grocery shop, though my cooking rhythm is just lost
-M is much more patient and easy about food than in the past
-for patience with my self when doing what experience has proved to be the right set of things is so hard
-for a dear friend being recognized as a community hero
-for a flood of memories after finding an envelope of photos, some never seen before

Tonight I'm grateful for:

-Being able to go back to sleep around midnight when a friend accidentally hit dial on her phone and my landline rang and woke me
-Amazing memories of my first brother-in-law; I was closer to him than my own brother and today marks 12 years
-Connecting with my sister today with love and support
-Being treated to a lovely dinner with a dear friend
-Doing the short, easier 20-minute biking program when I got home trying to find a way to stay active yet still take it easy on my knee
-Biofreeze; it feels pretty good right now!
-Cassie, Cleo and Rosie, the best kitties I could ever ask for; we all had a bit of play time tonight

Goodnight all,
Stephanie

Oh. My. Gosh! THIRTY days hath September!

Thank you, Maha, for remembering!

With that, I expressed more gratitude

* For my amazing son, who continues to work through his grief well-being a rock for his girls
* For his wife, who’s friends from her days on the Olympic team, are “well connected”, and are now providing the girls with experiences beyond belief! My son flew to New Hampshire to take one of my grandkids to look at DARTMOUTH!
* For, after five years of grief and loneliness, I’ve met someone very special, who adores me. It’s a healthy relationship, and I feel blessed beyond words.
* For finally being willing to “let go of“ my beloved husband. It’s not been easy to allow myself to be vulnerable, and to love again… But it’s time.
* For the amazing performances/lectures I’ve been able to attend lately, either as a volunteer, or a patron… Linda Ronstadt, Stephen Stills, Judy Collins, The Kingston Trio, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and more. So many memories…
