Today, this last day of 2017, I am grateful for all of this, yet so much more:

-My magic coat, gloves, hats, scarves, all that keep me bundled up warm in single digits and negative wind chill temps
-A comfortable, warm home, while I know there are many who are homeless
-These sweet kitties, especially the one that's hanging with me right now, while the other two are lazy snoozers!
-A new CD with dear friend, Kelley Hunt, on Duke Robillard's CD of 20's and 30's blues songs; it's top notch music and Kelley shares the singing with Maria Muldar, Elizabeth McGovern, and others - "Duke Robillard and His Dames of Rhythm"
-A loaf of organic whole wheat pumpkin applesauce bread baking in the oven as I type, making this house smell mighty good AND giving some extra warmth
-Going to an early movie shortly with a friend, then coming home and staying in for the night; we'll see if I manage to ring in the new year!
-A lovely e-mail exchange with my mother
-Always, my health
-Always, every little thing I do to try and improve my lifestyle
-My many blessings of 2017, though I can still say I hope 2018 treats me and all of us kinder
-Each of you who share in this practice

* For this site, which provides a place of respite in this busy world.
* For the joy and sharing that took place this Christmas...lots of family time, and celebration.
* For my beautiful, healthy grand niece, Noelle....and seeing my own niece doing so well as a new mom.
* For being totally packed, with just a few incidentals to go... and I will get those on my next trip out.
* For "kicking the crud" in time to travel without being sick!
* For cutting my hair SHORT for the upcoming trip! (No curling iron necessary!)

Today I'm grateful for:

-Options and choices, as I try to decide where to travel for a 2018 milestone birthday (a 5-day hiking trip on the Otter Trail in South Africa is a distinct possibility)
-Friends around the world
-The internet, both a blessing and a curse
-Deciding to start the new year with a "First Day Hike," a state park thing that's catching on where parks have guided hikes on January 1st (if that doesn't work weather-wise, I'll go to the Arboretum, my favorite local place)
-Amazing peace, quiet and uninterrupted time at work!
-Thoroughly enjoying taking care of Pixie, the polydactyl kitty as tonight is my last night

Wow - Where has 2017 gone?

Tonight I'm grateful for:

-A white Christmas, the first I can remember in a long while and it was perfect; no ice, not lots of inches, no shoveling even required
-Friend entrusting me with her kitty's care while gone for a week; a sweet polydactyl girl named Pixie, who is VERY happy to see me since she's realized I dole out the wet food and treats
-The hallway lights at work today going dark multiple times (motion-activated) while I was in my office, uninterrupted and loving it
-SO enjoying the early arrival of Trader Joe's heirloom oranges (but we have no global warming going on, do we? I normally wait until mid-February for them (Sky Valley, CA)
-A quiet, peaceful Christmas day, a total PJ day
-The first holiday season that I haven't felt was completely overshadowed by my grief, wow!
-My warm and comfortable bed, calling me soon now

Goodnight all,
Stephanie

Gratefull
* That I remembered to come here two consecutive days! (see what happens when life gets too busy??)
* For the simple act of breathing without a wheeze or a violent cough!
* For the loving support of my friends and family
* For not feeling pressured to have a spotless house when they are here for Christmas
* For 2018 travel plans in place and all paid for (spend it while I can...who knows what will happen in this crazy time)
* For people who still seek kindness, tolerance and social justice.

* For a fairly speedy response to antibiotics, after being slammed with a sudden onset of horrific asthma and a respiratory infection.
* I already had a doctor appointment so did not have to go to ER
* My cancer marker is good. NO follow up for six months. Still a clean bill of health in that realm!

* Able to clear my crazy calendar and have been kind to myself this week...sipping tea, and watching Hallmark Christmas movies and sleeping a lot.
* My son "survived" another first... his wife's birthday would have been Tuesday.
* Rain. Glorious rain yesterday/ Just hours after the gardeners finished putting in my new drains!

Today I'm grateful for:

-A quieter office environment as many are off now for the holiday(s)
-How much I truly do enjoy silence, and I think it can help offset my world of information overload a bit
-Compassion, for myself and others; I constantly strive for more
-The beautiful and famous Plaza lights that I drive past daily on my way home from work
-Stretching, stretching and more stretching as I try to deal with some nagging low back pain; stretching is a miracle drug in and of itself
-Those wonderful three kitty girls of mine that always bring a smile to my face

Today I'm grateful for:

-This place, you here, where I come for solace provided in giving thanks
-Maha's amazing spirit, especially while in the initial realizations of deep loss (remember, Dear One, you are far more active than Beth ever was, so you stand a better chance, methinks),
-Taking comfort where I can; a candle, three kitties, music, sweet music, getting lost in a good book, wandering the shopping malls, whatever it takes, one foot in front of the other, every day, knowing some days will be better than others (waxing and waning, Ann, eh?)
-A friend who was kind enough to ask how I'm faring through the holidays
-Choices and options, truly a luxury
-Feeding my own soul, bringing my own self flowers

Have a great evening all,
Stephanie

~ for leaning into acceptance

~ not beating myself up for gaining a pound last week

~ that I'm at least prepared for the challenge it is going to be to rid myself of the 30 pounds I piked up over five months this summer, thanks to Stephanie's sharing about Beth's experience in that regard

~ again, tracking my food after three days of not doing so

~ the new moon tonight. "It is said that the new moon is a time to silently contemplate our intentions for our life, the year, and for the next two weeks when the full moon will rise. In its rising the full moon helps clear away whatever does not align with our intentions." Here is a guided meditation for any who may be so inclined, from a member of our local community:

Gratitude
* For two days spent with a travel buddy in Santa Rosa
* For seeing the city beginning to rebound after the devastation from the horrific fires last month
* For a friend who fixed me dinner (and a DRINK!) after the exhausting drive home (normally 1hr, 45 minutes...over 3 hours yesterday, due to more high winds, and heavy traffic!)
* For Jnani, also touching my life....her compassion toward strangers, and generous offerings of comfort...I feel I knew her well, despite the simple online communication we had over the years.
* For my nieces new and beautiful baby! Noelle Elizabeth, just in time for Christmas!

Grateful~~

~ for another day to get it right (lol)

~ the pitter-patter of a light rain this evening

~ wonderful memories to call upon in this time of grief over the sudden death of dear friend, Jnani, in a fatal car accident. She provided personal 24/7 care for many dying patients; I had hoped to have her by my side as I transition. A friend commented, " I console myself thinking of the welcoming party she'll be getting. She assisted so many in crossing over. She has to have the biggest heavenly fan club ever! She lived very very courageously."

~ though I haven't tracked food yesterday or today, I've been quite aware of intake and made a point of eating moderatly

~ thoroughly enjoyed a birthday brunch today to celebrate the birthday of a dear friend (mutual friend of Sandra and me)

Blessed be,
Maha

Tonight I'm grateful for:

-Being able to be a "bahumbug" if I want (sorry, Kathy!) and not being the only one on our cul-de-sac
-Getting a workout in last night
-Taking the stairs at work three times today, up and down from 1st to 9th Floor
-Candles
-Small creature comforts, like my heating pad on a cold night while the wind is howling outside
-Feeling like I'm finally getting back into full-time cooking mode again, trying new recipes and still using old favorites
-My warm and comfortable bed

Goodnight all,

Grateful
* That my niece just this moment gave birth to her first baby! My sister is now a first time grandma!!!!
* For my niece taking such good care of herself throughout her pregnancy
* For the GREAT, fun, co-ed bunco group I am in...a monthly party...but the Christmas one is the best!
* For a surprise tin of homemade baklava from a friend on the east coast. Wow. Is it GOOD!
* For still holding off the 20 pounds I have recently lost...now to maintain for the next few weeks!
* For getting organized to put tickets and upcoming trip info in individual folders
* For my cozy home, all decorated for the holidays.
* For my "ba-humbug" neighbors, who evidently succumbed to neighborhood peer pressure, and hired someone to decorate their front lawn today!
* For feeling joy, despite recent heart break, this season....

Today I'm grateful for:

-Our cafeteria downstairs and their ongoing efforts to provide plenty of healthy options!
-Buying one ticket to a house concert for Saturday night, meaning I'm going alone, though I will know a few people there; the musician is special for several reasons
-Intentions to work out tonight during Survivor, including walking lunges through the house during commercials
-My three ever-present workout buddies that will hang with me while doing so (Rosie might fetch after her ball some, but the other two will work their eyelids! Ha!)
-Declaring a PJ day for Christmas Day for myself and preparing to stick to that boundary with friends (I'm going to dinner with friends on Christmas Eve so not being reclusive)
-Enjoying my solitude

Have a good day all ... !!!

Tonight I'm grateful for:

-A sunny day with temps in the mid 50s, just beautiful for mid-December
-Lighting the luminary candles yesterday for the last time this year
-Taking advantage and getting a bit more raking done (never-ending on this tree-filled cul-de-sac along with 5 of my own old, big pin oaks, so you just clear when you can)
-Spreading a little cheer today, a friend AND the baristas who make my delicious teas
-Getting my kitty girls 5-year pictures shot today when everybody was chilled out
-Truly enjoying a day with no plans and just going wherever it took me
-Now, an evening of relaxation at home ...

Grateful for so much, including~~

~ the sweet connection with Harley the golden retriever and Vinny the (100%) wolf over the four days I house sat at "their" home (and because of Vinny's timidness, I was never able to get closer than about 6' to her, and that at the end of the stay)

~ staying firm in my commitment to track food intake

~ learned that I might gain a noticeable (and VERY welcome) increase in monthly income, plus retroactive payment, so I am enthusiastically completing the necessary paperwork

~ after the disappointment of feeling the need to cancel my attendance at a weekend retreat, Sunday plans with a friend feel especially welcome

~ in spite of 24 degrees low last night, I stayed warm

Blessed be,
Maha

Tonight I'm grateful for:

-My family's continued safety during the southern CA fires
-My mother, sister and cousin all responding quickly when I inquired about safety
-Beth's music that lives on in many ways (glad you liked, Maha)!
-Temps have dropped here, out comes my magic coat that keeps me warm and loved
-Getting past my all or nothing attitude; the Arboretum put out an emergency call for volunteers for the last night of the luminary; I signed up for the 3-5 p.m. lighting slot (don't have to stay all night to make it worth my while AND it gets my walk in for the day!! Win-win-winning attitude
-Getting my butt off the chair to do 20 minutes of exercise just now so I use my gratitude list to pat myself on the back; hey, whatever it takes, works for me!
-My best exercise buddies, they ALWAYS all join me ...
-Now, they will all join me in my warm, soft bed ...

Goodnight all,
Stephanie

Grateful at all times, but today, come here to post...
* My amazing gardeners, who diligently show up week after week, in 30 degree weather, or when it is 110 outside!
* For a fabulous weekend with my granddaughters
* For their help in getting up my Christmas decorations, despite their deep sadness and desire to avoid the holidays this year
* For baking and decorating sugar cookies for the first time, EVER, with their guidance!
* For bringing the cookies to the police station and the fire station, as I picked names off the giving tree.
* To be blessed enough to afford gifts for the many underprivileged in our area.
* For, whatever people say about WALMART, their free assembly of bicycles, and them walking them to the fire department drop off center for me! NO charge for that either!
* For my Myanmar visa arriving quickly, and at a discount!
* For a friend delivering me chocolate covered licorice from Iceland....my absolute fav...and me resisting the goodies until Christmas
* For the HART program (Homeless Advocacy and Resourse Team) in my city, which is seeking long term resolution and temporary winter shelter for the homeless in our area.

On this Sunday evening, I'm grateful for all of this, yet so much more:

-One of my sacred places, open for the yearly Luminary Walk

-Having the stamina to walk for 7+ hours as I lit, relit/restocked and then snuffed the beautiful luminary along wooded paths listening to live pan flute and bagpipe music - healing and soulful
-Another gorgeous, unseasonably warm day today so I could get my front lawn raked and bagged (16 super stuffed bags)
-My neighbors, who use my leaves as garden mulch - win/win - I get the old-fashioned exercise, they get the mulch
-Always, my health, that I never want to take for granted
-The sweetest three kitty girls I could ever ask for
-Hot, running water for a soothing shower for this tired body

When many of us think of the holidays, we turn to Christmas images. As a Christian, I enjoy seeing reminders of the birth of Jesus. I also respect and acknowledge that we need to be open to all faiths and beliefs during these difficult times, focusing on similarities rather than differences in our religious, or non-religious practices. For those of you who celebrate Chanukah, Kwanza, simply time with family, or nothing at all, I am posting a schedule of gratitude that will apply to everyone.

I challenge EACH of you to do this for 31 days!
