Tonight (barely), on this last day of June, I am grateful for:

-New beginnings, like July 1st (having my nephew here really threw off our typical routines)
-This incredible weather, much cooler, and it looks like that will be so throughout the week
-A wonderful theatre performance this afternoon, "The Mountaintop," about the night before Martin Luther King, Jr. was killed - the acting was EXCELLENT and the play itself thought-provoking and well done
-Strong consideration being given to season tickets at this theatre; next year (September is the start of season) will be their 40th anniversary and they have a great lineup, several Tony and/or Pulitzer award-winning plays, as well as several runner-ups to those awards (maybe for my birthday present to myself, especially because my company will pay 50%)
-My partner feeling good enough to go to the play and our dear friend who got us the free tickets
-Finally, finally, finally, the doorknob that will actually close on the door entering out basement; no more kitties in the rafters!!
-A short work week ahead
-Each and every one of you who share in this amazing practice

Stephanie

Tonight, I am grateful for:

-Friends that I've known for many, many years
-Celebrations
-My favorite spinach strawberry pecan salad, that was also a big hit with all
-Treating both of us to a nice big platter of pineapple at Costco today
-Deck time tonight, enjoying the cool breeze (where was this last week while my poor little California nephew was dying of humidity here) and the trickle of the waterfalls, with a cacophony of frogs going on

Goodnight all ...

Grateful tonight
* That I was able to find a CHEAP motel on the coast so we can escape this unbearable heat (110-112 predicted until Thrusday when it drops to the 90's)
* Motel has fridge and microwave (and we are bringing a hot plate) so that we can stay on plan.
* Able to tolerate 45 minutes of gentle laps today (and even the pool is over 90 degrees right now!)
* Husband calming down after misplacing the money he got from the sale of his old truck. NEITHER of us can find it.
* Knowing that the money was only in our hands for a few days, so we can't really miss it.
* Knowing someday it will show up (Probably when we really need it) and we will be THRILLED!
* Surprise email from my DIL

A/C fixed (for all of two hours). Problem now but delightful for the short period it was working.

bank able to fix a problem that prevented son from accessing his account in Italy (especially grateful since it's nearly impossible to get a bank agent on the weekend)

early morning conversation with that son (miss him so)

unexpected morning gift from DD18 (she brought me home one of my favorite "treats") and even more of a blessing - that she thought to do something so kind :)

dinner already in the works and on the stove so that our afternoon plans don't interfere with getting dinner on the table later.

Good morning,

Happy to be here, happy to have such abundance in my life~~

~ amazing how the passage of a night can make such a difference in one's sense of well-being

~ after repairing the bike tire yesterday, I thought I was going to be again thwarted when my bike started malfunctioning before I was even out of the driveway, but with the assistance of my cooperative housemate we remedied the chain-related problem and I went on my way for an 11-mile spin

~ I'm feeling motivated to continue with the strength training that I initiated once again on Thursday

~ the most exotic looking and tasting organic black plums, with a sweet, succulent blood-red fruit in stunning contrast to the dark skin

~ primed, upon finishing here, to do a few asanas and then cook a delicious tofu scramble breakfast

~ (interesting tidbit from the talk I attended) a neurosurgeon, CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Sanjay Gupta was asked about brain health in old age, and I thought it was interesting that he said the latest research is not supporting the value of crossword puzzles, sudoku, etc. as having impact on brain health in the way that learning new skills does...oh, and he said that depending upon recorded lists is not desirable...better to make and remember mental lists (uhhhhh, right)

Blessed be,

Grateful tonight
* For air conditioning, as the weather heats up (106 today...ugh)
* Safe travels to the wine country with friends
* Finding a gas station in the middle of nowhere, when the gauge showed below empty and dashboard indicated I had only 6 miles of gas left!
* Staying within calorie range while all my skinny friends indulged
* Wisdom to back off when necessary
* A home filled with lots of comfort - soft furniture, beds, lighting, again A/C, appliances, and all the things so many in this world lack...

Thankful for...

-continued outreach from son in Italy (hearing from other moms that they haven't heard as much from their kids makes me extra grateful that my angsty teenage son is still a mama's boy).

-making it to two scheduled appointments for baby girl in time (despite them being spaced too closely together)

-gracious assistants who were loving and understanding to baby girl when she threw up in the middle of an orthodontic procedure. (she's known for having a rough gag reflex and they responded well)

-a couple of hours of respite at sister-in-laws to enjoy her A/C before heading back to the oven that is my home.

Grateful tonight
* For Michelle's son having the sense to "run away" to a friend's home...not to a large city full of strangers!
* For knowing they have the wisdom to work out the issues.
* For remembering back to my own rebellious youth...and knowing how my parents (unbeknownst to me) worried and agonized over me.
* For my grandkids, who LOVED their gifts from France. (The oldest was kissing her shoes...and "questioning if I was her REAL grandma, because SHE would never have gotten her red platform shoes!)
* For new twin beds in the guest room. The kids are excited since they will no longer have to share a bed when they stay over.
* For a little nutella spread on frozen bananas. A decadent treat, within calorie range, and way healthier than chocolate ice cream!
* For day five of consecutive staying within calorie range.

I am full of gratitude,...

- for supper ready when I got home late, tired & sweaty, didn't even know I was hungry but I was and sure appreciated food ready and waiting!
- son's job - and his effort to listen willingly to a life-lesson speech from his mom
- learning new things in the course of chatting with people
- migraine that almost got the best of me subsiding now, medications that work
- all schedules synchronizing so dear Gracie dog is well looked after, entertained, fed, watered, exercised, rested, amused and loved, while our household comes and goes this week
- the stunning late evening sky and views when I drive the 10 minutes home from the farm most evenings
- another 3 day weekend
- seeing notice for summer free concert in the park events in my community

What can we gain by sailing to the moon if we are not able to cross the abyss that separates us from ourselves? This is the most important of all voyages of discovery.
-- Thomas Merton

Good morning,

Gratitude~~

~ with relief, figuring out fairly quickly that the nausea that I experienced in yoga yesterday stemmed from eating too close to class time

~ Kitty Rama, for the first time in recorded (and unrecorded) history, voluntarily jumped up onto my lap (TWICE) yesterday evening and napped there for a long while -- she's definitely becoming more accessible and cuddly

~ like Sandra, "adjusting relatively easily to changing plans," in my case meaning instead of book club I'm going tonight with a friend to hear Sanjay Gupta, a practicing neurosurgeon and the multiple Emmy-award winning chief medical correspondent for CNN

~ the pensive, though wise, realization that I'm in another season of life, as I decide not to explore going with a friend to see Rockin' Dopsie, Jr. & The Zydeco Twisters at a very nice local venue -- ahhhhh how quickly that "sweet bird of youth" flies away

~ for the determination today to BEGIN once again strength training, in order to maintain my exercise streak, since I haven't repaired the flat tire yet

Blessed be,
xox

Thankful for...

- DS16, not only consistently reaching out to Mommy while away, but having such a chat with a room full of his friends - giving loving, calling me Mommy, etc. without caring about how "uncool" that is for a teenage boy.

- giving myself "permission" to read for pleasure (excited to have found library services that allow you to borrow books for your Kindle).

- resolve

- the sound of my DH working out on the elliptical at home because he prefers the extra time here before work. Happy to have a home he always rushes to get back to...

On the five month anniversary of my mom's passing, I am grateful
* For all the years I had her
* For travel plans made to spend my mom and dad's wedding anniversary in August with my dad
* That the grandkids will be here all afternoon. GREAT anticipation of oldest's face when she sees her hideous (in my opinion only) shoes from Paris.
* That my pedaler arrived this morning, and I have already done two 5 minute intervals on it. Knee holding up fairly well, and thighs are feeling it!
* That I finally got the pictures of our trip downloaded to the computer. Will post some soon...lots of sorting to do first!
* That I was in bed before midnight and slept 7 consecutive hours. Jet lag behind me!
* Sunshine today, and pool this afternoon.

My mind withdrew its thoughts from experience, extracting itself from the contradictory throng of sensuous images, that it might find out what that light was wherein it was bathed. . . . And thus, with the flash of one hurried glance, it attained to the vision of That Which Is.

Good morning,

From my early morning rising, the day is quickly unfolding, with much to be thankful for~~

~ not letting my aborted bike ride this morning (flat tire) "rain on my parade"

~ morning yoga ahead

~ refreshing breakfast of yogurt with fresh organic strawberries, raspberries and banana

Thankful for...

- Skype and that my son has reached out several times since landing (he swore he wasn't going to call which makes this even sweeter!)

- box fans (it's been a month's worth of heat wave and no A/C repair in sight despite several service calls)

- DD18's college orientation yesterday, and that she's already taken the initiative to map out her next several semesters of school plans

- the tiny clear space on my "to do" board that means something actually got done yesterday

- summer vacation for the kiddos means more time with Mommy (and sorta managing to balance work and time with them thus far)

Also grateful for the Anne Sexton poem Maha shared on 6/22/13

Grateful tonight for
* Another day of gentle rain...ah....
* My niece - cut from the same mold we are.
* Hubby on board with next year's travel plans.
* Not being upset when I saw the scale with the delayed reaction this morning (up three pounds despite excellent eating this week...I think it is the French sauces and pastries that finally landed on my hips!)
* Tracking food for 3rd consecutive day. And I have calories left over!

Kathy, am I supposed to get rid of old trucks??? You do know I grew up in Alabama.....so I am culturally influenced to park them on the lawn. I do have one that has been in the drive 10, no 15 years??? Steph, super glad your partner is doing better!!! My best to Beth.

Today I am thankful for:

*my wife enjoying a movie I picked for her, "First Knight".
*her great Kale salad she made!
*a good morning of designing, planting on a site.
*pain pills! I usually take before long days on site. With the truck shopping, I haven't been taking them, and forgot- yikes knee, back pain!!!!
*a more sane amount of pinning today.
*solving a design problem for a planting tomorrow at the church we do.

take care, bob

Thankful for...

-confirmed safe arrival of DS16 in Italy (and that he made time to Skype chat with Mommy even after a quick text to let me know he was okay).

-a beautiful graduation ceremony for DD18 (and that I kept it mostly together - lol).

-what I think was my "last straw" in terms of being truly motivated to make the changes I need to. You know those defining moments when you decide you're done being the way you're sick of being? They're never fun but they're motivating as hell.

While Bob is celebrating his NEW used truck, I am celebrating and SOOOOO grateful, my husband FINALLY got rid of his OLD used truck (It had been sitting off and on dead in our driveway for over 3 years!) and I am thankful that we are not divorced after all the fights we had about it...

Also...grateful
* For cool weather and summer rain. SO unusual here, and SO appreciated.
* For yummy home made gluten free spatzle. Such luscious comfort food on a rainy day!
* For catch up phone call with Maha
* For knowing I am pretty much caught up and over jet lag now
* For yielding to my own and others' limitations.
* For an outstanding documentary watched this morning....We Were There.
* For the agapantha that burst into bloom this week...striking on a gray day.
* And did I mention the dead truck. What a joy to have that clunker GONE!

Tonight, I am grateful for:

-The amazing 11-year-old boy that is my oldest nephew; a truly incredible kid (I'm NOT just a biased aunt) that I had the privilege of hosting for five wonderful days
-The imagination and inspiration that can come from a kid, if only you open yourself to it
-The traditions I'm creating with him, as this is his third annual summer visit with me
-My wonderful sense of taking care of myself (I took tomorrow off work also, JUST FOR ME)
-My stamina; I dare say many folks my age would not be able to keep up with an 11-year-old for NINE HOURS at a water park full of a variety of water slides, most of which we did 2-3 times, along with other various water "rivers" that you tube through
-Letting myself have my tears when my heart strings tugged at his departure today (I was at least able to hold them back until he was on the plane!!!)
-My amazing partner who's doing so much better right now that she was able to do a lot more with us this year, despite the humidity
-Leftover Asian food (I'll be eating the remainder of my nephew's veggie lo mein with tofu tonight - YUM)!!

Have an excellent evening all ...

Stephanie

Today I am thankful for:

*being over my sore throat, and mostly over my diverticulitis, though I did my best to over-do it and relapse.

*new used truck! Oy shopping for it pooped me out.

* not firing a guy who has been driving me crazy. I have been resisting firing him the last few weeks, because I knew he knew a lot about trucks, and it was a great decision. He was a great help, and we had a lot of one on one time, which helped.

* AC in the new truck!!! All three work trucks don’t have AC, so OMG luvvvvved it (my wives Cooper does, but there is this whole Bob to Cooper spatial prob.).

* nice time with the wife. I went up Saturday to look at a clients Lake House, and took my wife, and really enjoyed it.

*Moby, Pandora station- Luvvvvv it.

*the update to the pinterest app, tells you when you have already pinned something. Sad I need it though.

*I found George Takei on Pinterest! Oh myyyyy!

take care, bob

To be hopeful means to be uncertain about the future, to be tender toward possibilities, to be dedicated to change all the way down to the bottom of your heart.

Good afternoon,

SAVOY, may this year's turning of the sun in Cancer bring you even MORE joy and contentment and adventure!

It sounds like you had a fun and satisfying birthday weekend...AND it's GREAT that you're not at the computer as much, S~...and I love that you also so deeply resonate with that stunning Brother David text.

I have so much to be thankful for in this life~~

~ the dialogue I'm having with friends after sharing the Eckhart Tolle interview

~ didn't do too badly on the calorie front with the delicious dinner Sandra and her partner prepared last night

I am so very grateful -

- Maha's quote from David Steindl-Rast - one of my faves. This has been hanging on the wall next to my desk for years and I read it every day
- that I have so much to be grateful for, and am aware of that fact, even when time passes and I am not spending time at computer
- morning still cool enough to get a little run in before heat of the day
- delightful birthday weekend, fun gifts, great friends, laughing, music, family
- incredible moon at night, perfect weather, sitting around campfire til the wee hours
- hoses and plentiful water to shower Jones after a workout, ...watching her a enjoy a roll in the sand afterward
- comfortable shoes and clothing for summer weather
- fresh flowers indoors

Thankful...

- for DS 16's safe (hopefully/awaiting word) arrival in Italy and opportunity to have this trip

- for his Prof (who was sick at the airport and is hopefully feeling much better/didn't help Mama's anxiety about leaving her son when the medics were called)

- for DD18's high school graduation today and all she has accomplished over the years. May her future be the blessing she is to me.

- that Daddy isn't deployed at the moment and is able to share this special day

- for the abundance in my life and the unmet needs that I trust will be met.

Whatever comes my way
I greet with gratitude
today.

Every day, think as you wake up, today I am fortunate to be alive, I have a precious human life, I am not going to waste it. I am going to use all my energies to develop myself, to expand my heart out to others; to achieve enlightenment for the benefit of all beings. I am going to have kind thoughts towards others, I am not going to get angry or think badly about others. I am going to benefit others as much as I can."

Grateful today
* For a great evening with friends, and laughter that made my belly ache!
* For actually sleeping til almost 5:30 am! Meaning I am almost back to CA time!
* For checking out the new farmers' market yesterday and finding almost everything being certified organic.
* For so many things we take for granted - inside faucets with clean water, light switches that work, toilet paper, clocks that keep time, shoes for our feet, pillows, etc....
* For the joy of my dance memories as I watch So You Think You Can Dance...
* For drop in temps with thunderstorms and rain on the way....in California? True...

WELCOME MORNING
by Anne Sexton

There is joy
in all:
in the hair I brush each morning,
in the Cannon towel, newly washed,
that I rub my body with each morning,
in the chapel of eggs I cook
each morning,
in the outcry from the kettle
that heats my coffee
each morning,
in the spoon and the chair
that cry "hello there, Anne"
each morning,
in the godhead of the table
that I set my silver, plate, cup upon
each morning.

All this is God,
right here in my pea-green house
each morning
and I mean,
though often forget,
to give thanks,
to faint down by the kitchen table
in a prayer of rejoicing
as the holy birds at the kitchen window
peck into their marriage of seeds.

So while I think of it,
let me paint a thank-you on my palm
for this God, this laughter of the morning,
lest it go unspoken.

The Joy that isn't shared, I've heard,
dies young.
emoticon
Joy in the morning,

Singing praise for all this and more~~

~ how poetry has lit up my life from, say, my 50s onward

~ my hot and tasty cupa'brew, a lovely part of my morning ritual

~ Kitty Rama's deep trust in us...it has taken years

~ powerful "there-but-for-the-grace-of-God" moments while communing at the prison

~ the elegance of the moon's presence last night as we drove home

~ staying determined in spite of the damned scales

Blessed be,

Again, thankful for so many things...
* That my hubby was able to get an appointment for a new hearing test in just a couple of weeks (lost a hearing aid in France)
* That my glasses were able to get fixed for free yesterday! (They fell into the airplane aisle while I was sleeping and someone stepped on them...fortunately lens was not broken, only very bent frames!)
* For being retired, so I can sleep when I want/need to (up at 4:30 yesterday morning, to bed at 8:30 last night. Up at 2 a.m. back to bed at 7 a.m. and slept until 11....) for a few days to get back on schedule.
* For Costco carrying SO much organic food (raspberries are literally 1/4 the price they are at Whole Foods!)
* Year round farmer's market here in our town now open!
* Friends from Belgium in town, and we'll get to see them Saturday!
* Getting together with son and family and get to present the grandkids with the BEST souvenirs ever! (8 Euro hideous platform heels from Paris for the 11 year old...ha ha ha ha. She'll LOVE them. And a red beret for the 9 year old who loves to wear hats)

Thankful for...

- a nice dinner out, great service, folks kind to my husband in uniform - all while supporting a good cause

- able to watch my Aunt-in-law's grandchild. She has legal guardianship of him and has been struggling with playing the role of parent now that her only child is already an established adult. This little boy recently lost his mom and it was wonderful to see him full of smiles playing with my DD9 (who's exactly one day younger than he).

- last day of school today for my kiddos. This means new stress as summer approaches but delighted that the end of the school year is here (and hoping today's activities go without a hitch).

- amusement at my DD16's insistence that from now until Monday afternoon - he and my DD18 are in the same grade as he'll officially be a senior after today and her high school graduation is Monday.

Tonight, I am grateful for:

-My special 11-year-old nephew
-The opportunity to spend time with him before he turns into a real teenager and develops other interests
-Homemade veggie pizza for dinner
-Tomato, basil and cucumber salad, made by an 11-year-old, who was taught by his cooking teacher, Julie, in his charter school; impressive, as were his knife skills
-A very active day, including a few hot, humid hours at the zoo followed by a cold picnic lunch on the living floor of our air-conditioned home!!! LOL
-My nephew's favorite place tomorrow - the water park with lots of big slides and I have to admit, I have fun with it too (and it will be another very active day)
-My comfortable bed calling me now ...

Goodnight all ...

Stephanie

Caught up with you once again! I've been busy reading. Will be taking two courses at once for the next two weeks (starting Sunday) so may not show up here every day to post.

~had some extra free time with hubby away
~up and exercised (doing some pep talk to keep this streak going)
~phone chat with DS and they are fine and busy
~a couple of emails that resolved themselves so I did not need to make a phone call
~getting a few small things accomplished that have been sitting for months
~braving up to ask someone in the know a question
~planning to get out for a few hours tomorrow
~my dogs being so playful this morning
~Kathy's return and safe trip
~Bob's healing and recognizing his needs (many people do not)
~a kick to keep my day positive, my eyes upward, and my heart attune to what is important in my life

Good morning to all of you, and welcome back to me! After spending three weeks in France, we are home, and I have SO much to be grateful for....starting with

* A new friend who is one of the most inpsiring men I have ever met...
* Having the opportunity to travel, not just "see the world", but to experience other cultures on a heartfelt level.
* Spending one day (included in package or we would never have gone there) in beautiful Monte Carlo. The home of the rich and famous. And NOT wanting to be a part of that culture!
* Learning when and how I can gracefully set limits with current physical limitations.
* A smooth trip home...safety above all, but the helpful people, a few hours of good sleep, and on time flights made the long day far more than bearable.
* After eating our way through the country, I returned only weighing three more pounds than I did when I left...and that includes the puffy ankles from flying!
* Waking to the sounds of birds in my own yard!
* Moderate temps in the forecast to help ease back to

~~~Kathy~~~
Solstice:
1) A stopping or standing still of the sun.
2) The point in the ecliptic at which the sun is farthest from the equator, north or south, namely, the first point of the sign Cancer and the first point of the sign Capricorn, the former being the summer solstice, latter the winter solstice, in northern latitudes; -- so called because the sun then apparently stands still in its northward or southward motion.
3) The time of the sun's passing the solstices, or solstitial points, namely, about June 21 and December 21.
Happy Summer Solstice (June 21 at 1:04 A.M. EDT, 10:04pm PDT)! So much to be thankful for in this season~~
~ unexpected level of generosity from gracious Bob
~ a positive response on a job query with Catholic Immigration Services, and though the full time job doesn't work for me, he wanted to keep my info on-hand should a part time position surface
~ happy about early morning work completed -- diatomaceous earth and nine cubic feet of cedar mulch spread in yard and path
~ got up-close-and-personal with my first tarantula yesterday, and after the initial fear I developed wonder at the largest and most impressive spider I've ever seen and learned that its bite is about the same severity as a wasp sting, and they move slowly and are easy to avoid
~ my prior natural foods brokering coming in handy as I prepare to call UNFI about "buying club" food purchasing, which might be a substantial savings over Whole Foods (they also buy from UNFI but, of course, with a MUCH deeper discount)
Blessed be,
xox
Tonight, I am grateful for:
-Time off work for fun in the sun (and humidity)
-Our sweet kitties
-More boxes gathered for a project with my nephew (to build a multi-level kitty house of boxes)
Goodnight all ...
There must be always remaining in every life, some place for the singing of angels, some place for that which in itself is breathless and beautiful.
-- Howard Thurman
Good morning,
Happy to pause, with coffee in hand, to consider some of my thankfulness~~
~ the beauty that keeps me going in spite of it all
~ (must be something in the air, Elaine) early to bed, early to rise (8:30pm-4:30am) makes a girl healthy, wealthy, and wise -- well, for sure "healthy" anyway lol
~ coolness of early morning for sweaty work (unloading 9 x 3 cubic ft. bags of cedar mulch + 50 lbs. of diatomaceous earth!)
~ continuing the exercise streak 19 days now
~ yoga with my favorite teacher at 9:30am
Blessed be,
