This April Fools day I give thanks for ...

* regular correspondence with my two favorite cousins, despite the distance we share our lives from the mundane to the big issues

* brunch today with a friend and new moon sisters tonight

* the luxury of a nap yesterday afternoon

* air conditioning (yes, I turned it on last night -- March, can you believe it?)

* laundry done ... cleaning for this afternoon

* gaining a pound (too much social eating) reminds me how vigilant I must be in order to change my lifestyle and improve my health. More exercise would help!

* As always, a life worth living, all kinds of possibilities, freedom to choose and the growing capacity to make each moment count.

Shine,
Sandra

one day closer to having Daddy home

a chance to take the kids on a trip during their spring break that has them all excited.

This Saturday morning I am thankful for ...

* PB2, Bob! Dehydrated peanut butter with the oil removed. You add water and it's almost as good as the real thing with 1/4 the calories. I buy it in one pound bags over the internet. It's still a trigger food but far fewer calories, especially when eaten in moderation. LOL

* Learning what you want in a relationship by experiencing what you don't want. I met someone last night who did nothing but talk about themselves ... I want to be with people who are just a little bit curious about me too.

* Steadily losing weight ... have lost almost two pounds every week for the last 16 weeks. At this rate, I figure I will hit my goal weight around Valentine's Day 2013.

* My dream job was advertised in the city where I live and want to stay this week. Maybe I can have it all! The job I want in the city where I want to live.

* Walking 1.8 miles with my daughter. Now if I can just start doing that by myself.

* Less than a month left of school. Now begins the last push of the last semester. So happy to be looking at the end. So ready!

* As always, a life worth living, all kinds of possibilities, freedom to choose and the growing capacity to make each moment count.

Shine,
Sandra

Peacefulone thanks for the plant update, sounds beautiful. I'll wait for the rest of the story this summer.

I am thankful for:

*finally getting into a new book, last night. I had been trying for some time, and kept falling asleep. I usually watch a podcast or Netflix on the iPad at night, but find quietly reading a book to be very refreshing.

*pain meds and ice, ice baby! My mid-back disc got out of whack yesterday, and the bone spurs have been really painful.

*being out of food, so I had to go out to lunch, which was actually nice, and not too painful.

*getting groceries, even though I was afraid my back would seize up. It did really tighten up, but I tip toed around and it was ok, and I’m really glad I can stay in this weekend.

*for my sage advice- aka. sticking nose in where not asked- to someone having trouble with kit kats, After pontificating about said kats, I remembered my post and I didn’t get peanut butter when shopping. PB is a real trigger food, and I can’t just eat one serving, but recently got it and ate it too fast.

*Netflix! I’ve been watching some great series, and really enjoying it.

I hope everyone has a great weekend! bob

Fabulous Friday thanks...

~a good workout at yoga this AM
~weekend plans for work and fun
~last night's rain
~an afternoon to dig dandelions (easy after the rain)
~quacamole and tomato on whole wheat

Bob, An easier question to answer would be "What is not blooming here." Our town has tons of crab apple trees in shades from white to pink to dark rose in every park and nearly every yard, lots of Bradford pear trees, redbud trees (an odd name since the flowers are deep pinkish purple), apple, cherry and magnolia trees, and tons of blooming bushes-lilacs in many colors, golden forsythia, purple plum, sweet almond. All of these are blooming now. By early summer those blooms will be gone, but the annuals will be planted and the perennials will be blooming and that is a whole nother story.

Make visible what, without you, might perhaps never have been seen.
-- Robert Bresson

Good afternoon,

Pausing in thanksgiving~~

~ the AMAZING quote from Bresson (via gratefulness.org's Word for the Day) and because of it learning more about this extraordinary man:

Robert Bresson (1901 - 1999) was a French film director known for his spiritual, ascetic style. Notably contributed to the art of film and influenced the French New Wave, he is often referred as the most highly regarded French filmmaker after Jean Renoir, as Jean-Luc Godard quotes "Robert Bresson is French cinema, as Dostoevsky is the Russian novel and Mozart is the German music." WOW!

~ Starbuck's iced coffee with milk and one squirt of hazelnut syrup

~ hanging out with a dear friend who is fighting mental illness

~ the joy and relief of gradually (over the last 15 years!) finding local friends who are kindred spirits

~ study date tomorrow with friend to prep for two mid-terms next week

What would it mean to live
in a city whose people were changing
each other's despair into hope? --
You yourself must change it. --
what would it feel like to know
your country was changing? --
You yourself must change it. --
Though your life felt arduous
new and unmapped and strange
What would it mean to stand on the first
page to the end of despair?

I'm thankful that my child has a new friend to play with.
I'm thankful for the $50 my mum gave me.

Today, I am grateful for many things, but here are just a few:

-A wonderful discussion last night with a 21-year-old barrista (also a personal trainer) about strength training; he gave me a HUGE compliment about how I look at age 53 (coming from a handsome and really nice 21-year-old male, it made me shine)
-A great webinar today on eating right for life by this nutritionist turned doctor, Dr. Ann - lots of good resources for anybody who wants them. www.DrAnnwellness.com
-Dr. Ann having a monthly healthy living e-newsletter at no cost (you can sign up at the website listed just previously)
-Co-worker/healthy lifestyle buddies; they make it so much easier during the work week

-All of you and even our cheery, good-natured banter back and forth (mainly Bob, of course) - I will not EVEN endeavor to beat out ANYBODY on length (although I have no objections to lengthy posts) :-)

Sandra, Sandra, Sandra,…….dear sweet, misguided Sandra. I do a love a long post- size does matter, hello!- and yours is long for this thread, which gives me some relief, but by the Bobian Verbosity Meter- BVM in the trade- you are but a fledging trying to fly. I just finished one on another thread that’s about 8x longer than yours- oy- and if you look back in the annals of Thanks you’ll find some 3x ones where I waxed Tolystoyian about all things Bob. Don’t get me wrong, I like the effort, and I do feel more comfy because of your post, but we all know who the alpha male of length is.

SUE_2U what a blessing that you had less pain, and could get more done. I hope your pain stays lower, and you have a great rest of the week. PEACEFULONE I want Genus, species, and cultivar of those gorgeus flowering trees!!! How can anyone be truly thankful without proper nomenclature.

Yesterday and Today I am thankful for:

*Sandra, who is a great bud, fine American, and posts long on occasion!!! Yeah!

*being active again on another thread wear the norm is long posts, so I can get my length fix…….That doesn’t sound right, uhhhh, where I can do a long wordy post amongst other wordy posts. Everyone is cool here, but I am such a people pleaser, that I am not comfortable continually doing something others aren’t. Dude, it’s my hang-up, you dig! However; after a super long post there, I’m thinking of trying to journal- not that people don’t yearn for more Bobness, I think it would be the compassionate thing to do.

*plumbing, plumbing, plumbing! Yeah back on!

*Mr. Big- my cat- tucking in last night. My wives trip last week was a nice short break, but the one this week is longer and not so fun- how decadent can one man be? So, it was good to have the company, even if it bit my hand when I rolled over.

*having one new employee show up! One of our two didn’t show up, which is a royal pain, but the one that did is working out nicely.

*catching MacBreak Weekly live. I missed the first half, with a mad dash to pay a late tax, but when I got back and brought it up there was a nice surprise. One of the tech guys, had a link on a screen behind him with the live feed of a squirrel feeding station in a Boston Park. It was the highlight, of a poorly lit day. It was set-up at ground level and often you’d see the squirrels coming around the tree right at nut level or better yet at eye level! Tech and Nature- woo hoo!

*getting some sleep last night. I had 3 hours only Monday night- why no post yesterday, and couldn’t function, so at least I had a full night and with the aid of caffeine I am functional today. take care, bob
ps. sorry for the lengthy beat down Sandra, your shout out was very appreciated.

Today I am grateful for all that I have been given - my health and that of my friends and family. Although many are in various stages of wellness they are always included in my prayers and gratitudes.

For promise of more rain, some sunshine and another day to do something constructive.
My thoughts with Athankfulone on her flight and to others who spread their wings soaring to new heights.

For all this and more I am truly grateful.

This Tuesday I give thanks for ...

* My daughter arrives TODAY and I get to spend the afternoon with her planning my trip to South Africa and doing a little shopping (not my favorite but I'lll take whatever time I can get with her)

* Family dinner Wednesday night. Despite the divorce, we function as a family and I treasure that time.

* Seeing my therapist this morning. Seems like there's always something to work on. Self-love is a ever-present challenge but I'm getting glimpses with Ralph's help.

* finishing four narratives this weekend & starting three more. The hardest part is finding a good topic. After these three, just five more plus a research paper and assessment.

* The job search is kind of stuck ... I need to get more creative about where I apply. That said, I'm thankful to have a job in hand and to be waiting not-so-patiently on my dream job to get back to me to schedule an interview. At least they called. Being a new graduate applying for jobs at age 60 is for the birds ... I'm not complaining, really. I really am thankful to have had the opportunity to go back to school and discover my passion. Now I just want to be able to find a job where I can do it every day.

* Flexibility in when I get a job ... time to wait on a job I can be passionate about. Now if I just had a dose of patience. .

* Making Bob feel better about his long posts ... this has to be as long as his longest ....LOL

* as always, a life worth living, possibilities and freedom to choose.

Shine,
Sandra

Today, I have much to be grateful for including, but not limited to:

-This incredible weather, with temps, humidity and sunshine all to perfection
-This body of mine making it through an entire day of helping friends plant organic crops yesterday. When the day was done, I could feel it. One long, hot shower, 10 minutes of stretching and a good night of rest later, I'm not feeling it today!!
-My amazing partner; her heart and soul never cease to amaze me
-Making it through additional changes to work projects at a critical time with grace
-Organizational skills that allow me to get more done!
-Good friends
-Extra-lovy kittens when I got home last night
-The practice of gratitude and all of you

Maha the plumber makes the water run clear! My plumbing is fixed and with the flow again!!!
Thanks to Sue 2U for her goodie recognizing my short accomplishment!!! And with just a modicum of begging on my part.

Yesterday and Today I am thankful for:

*14 hours of sleep yesterday. I am still pooped, but glad to put some hours in against my deficit.

*I got some accounting problems done this morning, which I have been stressing about.

*the plumber is back today and should finish today! Yeah! ps.if you see me begging on the streets to cover his bill, please toss me a couple of bits or I could sell myself on the streets. Do ladies pay by the pound???

*my wife got off well on her flight to go see her sisters. Her sister she is mainly seeing is the one whose husband has Lou Gehrig’s disease and is fading fast. They moved to Austin to be closer to their family, and this will be my wives first trip there. I know she’ll be a big help, and they are going for a few days to see two more sisters in Shreveport, which will be good for all.

*my cat doesn’t have to go to the vet!!! Mr. Big got into a fight yesterday, and was pretty shaken up. I don’t think he cared for me calling him Scar either- a small tear on his ear.
thanks, bob

~ a good walk with her on a hot afternoon...surely we burned a couple hundred calories (1-1/2 or 2 miles total, Sandra?)

~ deeply relieved to have heard from my friend, who is now out of the psychiatric unit, yesterday

Since we'll be in TURKEY, I'm not sure how regularly I will be able to post for the next few weeks. Past experience traveling, I've found this thread difficult to access, but ??? Sometimes I have free wi fi for several days, and other times none for several days...

But, for now, I express gratitude
* For a good night's sleep (or since it was almost 3 am when I finally could get to bed...a good MORNING's sleep!) to the sound of rain...
* For sheets in the washer, so that we'll have a clean bed when we return
* For hubby doing vacumning while I tidy up rest of house
* For my dad's frequent updates on Mom's condition (still coughing, weak, but getting out of bed more)
* That my sister actually DID show up yesterday
* For brilliant sunshine, and blue skies today!

I will be thinking of you all while we are gone...and know that even if I don't see you on this page, I am expressing gratitude in my heart at all times....

This one's for you, Kathy:

Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field. I'll meet you there.

When the soul lies down in that grass,
the world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, even the phrase "each other" doesn't make any sense.
-- Mevlana Jelaluddin Rumi

Good morning,

Feeling the absence of this community-of-the-spirit...stopping by while eating breakfast~~

~ Sandra's help on Power Point today, and hoping to have time to play as well

~ vicarious pleasure in Kathy and DH's travel plans!

~ seeing that not being attached to the "fruits" of my actions is the only way to have peace...as the Bhagavad Gita says, "Those whose consciousness is unified abandon all attachment to the results of action and attain supreme peace. But those whose desires are fragmented, who are selfishly attached to the results of their work, are bound in everything they do."

~ morning chuckle thanks to our token Male and great to see Sue among us (she wrote an amazing blog on self-discipline, BTW)

~ the courage to step on the scales this morning, in spite of knowing the news would NOT be good (meeting and trying to welcome the shame, as Rumi instructs, knowing it has been sent "as a guide from beyond")

Blessed be,
xox

Can't resist another favorite:

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond..

-- Rumi

Today I am thankful for:

*totally amazing short post yesterday. I was hurt however, at the total lack of dapicity I got from others for this monumental achievement. Don’t worry, it’s not like me to complain- again with the laughing- I’ll just weep quietly to myself in a fetal position, pleazzzzze don’t feel guilty.

*seeing duos bunnies while going out for breakfast. The birds were also amazing at that early hour, after the nights rain.

*another season of footy mate! AFL (Australian Rules Football) kick-off today with Richmond vs. Carlton! My wife threatended to leave early on her next trip after I came in with my totally authentic Australian slang- Cranky mate it’s how we speak down under! Only sports coverage that I love to hear the announcers talk.

*checking out the vids on the Alan Lomax Archive channel on Youtube. I had heard about it about a week before on Colbert, and have loved the old videos he collected over years to preserve these wonderful old performers- Songcatcher with Video.

*the plummer actually showing up! It wasn’t a dream that I talked to him a week ago.

take care mates, bob ps. I like Essendendon’s chances in the Premier Cup this Fall!

I am so very grateful for

Laughter
Friendship
Being loved!
The lovely chat I had with an old friend last night. I've missed her.
This totally healthy gluten free flax muffin recipe I found. It's yummy and good for me.
Having enough. Barely, perhaps, but the alternatives are worse... we're getting by!
Fewer worries, in some respects, than I used to have.
Getting a little bit better every day, finally!
The sunshine today! It's glorious!

Thanksgiving was never meant to be shut up in a single day.

Grateful tonight for
www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XOwA0fc-dQ
* The most incredible tapper I have ever seen. The endurance. The talent. The way he embraced the crowd. I am honored to have seen this star.
* The sky on the way to the show. BRILLIANT sunset in the west, with black clouds in the east. Iridescent (almost surreal looking) golden trees topped by a rainbow. No matter which direction one looked, the only thing they saw was magnificence.
* My mom is improving.
* My dad got a good nap.
* Got all my errands run today.

Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.
-- Mahatma Gandhi via Thought for the Day

Good morning,

I'm sure you got lots of hugs from your sisters at book club last night, Kathy, and you KNOW you've got virtual ones wrapping you in Thanksgiving support and love as well!

I'm grateful this morning~~

~ for Sherrie's support and virtual hugs

~ for the vicarious pleasure of Sandra's fun and enjoyable domestic *time-out* which ends today and Kathy's international one which is about to begin!

~ for *brain power* (i.e., analytical skills) which will hopefully take me through the remainder of my peninsular (Spain) literature class even though I'm not getting the academic support I expected from the prof on a tough assignment

~ for my housemate's peaceful and cordial status this morning, helping with a cumbersome kitchen task (unheard of) -- (Yes Sherrie on clean water! -- the task was transferring water I purchased at Whole Foods from a 5-gallon jug to 1-gallon ones because we're having temporary -- and expensive -- $350 so far -- problems with the well water quality)

~ for practical and useful Teachings like Easwaran's today (though not very useful to me unless I pay attention)

Blessed be,
xox
Maha
P.S. Just between you and me Kathy, there's one more necessary tiny little detail re: those stretch bands for "ensuring strength training will happen"
emoticon
Eknath Easwaran's commentary in today's Thought for the Day:

What counts most in life is not IQ but WQ, “Will Quotient.” No one can plead that he or she lacks will. There is will in every desire. Every desire carries with it the will to bring that desire to fruition. When it comes to something we like, we have all the will we need. Someone says, “Hey, come on, we’re going skiing!” and that is enough. We will get out of bed at three in the morning, drive for hours, stand cheerfully in the snow waiting for the ski lift, and in general suffer all kinds of discomfort with a will of iron. Yet as small a challenge as resisting a second cookie will find a weak, wobbly will.

To control our destiny, we need to harness our will, to do not what we like, but what is in our long-term best interest. If the will is strong enough, great things can be accomplished; if the will is weak, very little. In every endeavor, it is the man or woman with a firm will who excels.

Despite all, I am filled with gratitude
* For my book club...the support and friendship, the food, the drink, the laughter and tears that we share each month. AND we do talk about the book! (Tonight's meeting started at 6:30, people started leaving around 10:30-10:45...and a few were still there when I left at 11:00!)
* For the care my mom is receiving in the hospital. The great nurses who take care of her.
* That she is already showing response to the Tamiflu (For the H1N1 influenza) and labs are stabilizing.
* For my brother, who is willing to take on a difficult family situation (YAY!)
* For being packed, having rides to and from airport, and hotels transfers arranged.
* That house sitter details are settled.
* For finding the stretch bands to take with us...ensuring strength training will happen while we are gone!

This point is essential: mindfulness tethers the mind to the present. Initially this takes effort, but this effort is applied with a very light touch. It’s like brushing your teeth: you brush, you get distracted, and you just naturally come back. No big deal. By gently returning to the present, our mind calms down, and everything seems workable.
-- Pema Chodron

Good evening,

I decided it was more important than ever to make a stop here~~

~ I'm so happy to hear that your mom's better, Kathy, and you've been able to assist in crisis-management long-distance, helping your dad through all this, and HOORAY! for your brother

~ *being with* a dear friend who is going through a very rough time

~ again, long distance crisis-management assistance via SEVERAL conversations with (phone shy) Sandra, our resident almost-MSW and intern counselor

~ so very grateful for Sandra's availability (while vacationing in FL!!!) and skill in guiding me through this very difficult and stressful experience

~ though I'm feeling great anxiety, I'm not over-eating and I'm managing to get some preparation completed for a power point presentation next week

Blessed be,
