Thankful today (notice not in the wee hours of the night?)
* For successful efforts to re-establish sleep pattern
* That my mom is ok after a fall
* Fed ex package arrived in about 12 hours!
* Exciting musical week ahead (Chamber Orchestra of Kremlin, Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Folsom Symphony...) one of them comp tickets, one we purchased and one we are working!
* DIL almost completed with chemo and radiation treatments sooner than expected, and will last a week less than previously told.
* DIL's strength and courage in all of this (stubborness pays off!)
* The strength and support my amazing son provides for her and the kids.

Grateful for...

today - as tomorrow I take DH back to the airport for Afghanistan

the chance to take each of our four kids on their own "Daddy date" in this past two weeks and the rare one-on-one time with each that provided.

that with everyone competing for time to visit with DH - his choice was always, for two weeks, HOME. :)

Monday night gratitudes
* Remembering the first time I heard Shostakovich and wept... At that moment I thought he was me. How did he KNOW what was in my soul???
* Eye exhaustion, yet exhuberance, from working on the presentation for my dad's power point
* Family contributions of photos
* The opportunity to spend the entire day on Saturday at the High School Jazz Band competition hosted by our local high school. School bands from all over the state were there...and totally restored my faith and optimism for the upcoming generations!
* Hot oatmeal for breakfasts these past few cold morninged days.

This Monday morning I am thankful for ...

* my brother and accountability partner. He's lost 15# and I've lost 17#. Now he's doing his level best to get me exercising with almost daily emails. Maybe he'll annoy me so much I'll go exercise just to satisfy him. LOL

* a "deal" with my cousins. I'll go to the gym once for every time they tell me they've gone to the gym. And I have eyes in the back of my head so I'll know if they are fibbing

* an exhilerating bicycle ride in near perfect weather with Maha yesterday. Motivation for another bicycle ride today. It's supposed to be high of 68 degrees and sunny. If that's not bicycle riding weather then what is?

* changed my profile picture to me & Maha on our bikes -- a daily reminder to get out there and exercise.

* my two extraordinary children. It just hurts when I think about how much I love them.

* as always, a life worth living, possibilities and freedom to choose.

Shine,
Sandra

Thankful for...

waking up before the alarm clock and getting my exercise time done early in the day

having to get 1099s done means I've had "a team" to support my work at Home Front Hearts.

that team that continues to support this work - when funding has not yet been found to move forward.

Rather than going after our walls and barriers with a sledgehammer, we pay attention to them. With gentleness and honesty, we move closer to those walls. We touch them and smell them and get to know them well. We begin a process of acknowledging our aversions and our cravings. We become familiar with the strategies and beliefs we use to build the walls: What are the stories I tell myself? What repels me and what attracts me? We start to get curious about what’s going on.
-- Pema Chodron

Gratitude for a blessing sent by a dear friend (you know who you are!) ~~

BLESSING IN THE CHAOS

To all that is chaotic
in you,
let there come silence.

Let there be
a calming
of the clamoring,
a stilling
of the voices that
have laid their claim
on you,
that have made their
home in you,

that go with you
even to the
holy places
but will not
let you rest,
will not let you
hear your life
with wholeness
or feel the grace
that fashioned you.

Let what distracts you
cease.
Let what divides you
cease.
Let there come an end
to what diminishes
and demeans,
and let depart
all that keeps you
in its cage.

Let there be
an opening
into the quiet
that lies beneath
the chaos,
where you find
the peace
you did not think
possible
and see what shimmers
within the storm.

Maha

Commentary, Thought for the Day:

When we wake up from a dream into waking consciousness, we do not pass from unreality to reality; we pass from a lower level of reality to a higher level. And, the mystics of all religions say, there is a higher level still, compared with which this waking life of ours is as insubstantial as a dream.

Yet until we do wake up, nothing sounds more absurd than the assertion that we are dreaming, and nothing seems more solid than this world of the senses. Why should this be so? If original goodness is our real nature, why are we unable to see it? The answer is simple: because we see life not as it is but as we are. We see “through a glass darkly,” through the distorting lenses of the mind – all the layers of feeling, habit, instinct, and memory that cover the pure core of goodness deep within.

This Saturday morning I am thankful for ...

* restful sleep
* sound of blowing wind
* smell of coffee brewing
* touch of kitty fur
* taste of my vanilla meal replacement breakfast (seriously)
* sight of a clean apartment (well that's going a bit far ... soon-to-be clean)
* Zinc & Vit C seem to be working - lighter symptoms, shorter duration
* letting go of stored anger; letting go of stored fat; releasing weight
* as always, a life worth living, possibilities and freedom to choose

Shine,
Sandra

Again, tonight I list only a few of my many gratitudes
* For the kindness of a stranger who is sending me a disc filled with pictures of my dad in his leatherhood day, without allowing me to even pay for shipping. A gift, he said, for my dad who fought galliantly in WWII as a Marine...
* Again, for the internet and the possiblities, information, frienships it opens for all of us
* For getting details straightened out about retirement dental insurance (yup...someone forgot to enroll me...)
* The gracious clerks we encountered in the process
* Running into one of my favorite past coworkers, and sharing a little time of laughter with him.
* Sunny day, windy and cool, and wonderful for walking...

Thankful tonight
* For the internet...and the AMAZING things one can access (I found pictures today of my dad when he played football for the San Francisco Clippers in 1946...anyone ever heard of the Pacific Coast League? Pre-NFL?...AND I found information and possibly pictures of him when he played for the San Diego Bombers in 1940. Again, anyone heard of them? I hadn't until today)
* For the joy I receive by putting together a slide show presentation for my dad's 90th birthday party
* For awakening in a panic this morning, thinking I had to be somewhere at 6:00 and had overslept...then realizing it was Thursday, not Saturday (when I DO have to be somewhere at 6:00)
* For the support and fellowship with all the volunteers I am blessed to work with
* For being blessed to have health and dental insurance

Today I'm grateful for...

All that's right in my life and here.
The good health my family and I enjoy,
TV needing a minor inexpensive repair.
Deciding to make some decisions decisively with conviction.
Freshly squeezed grapefruit juice.
Time to read a novel.
The willingness to plan and monitor what I eat.
Choices.
The gift of today.

"To forgive another person from the heart is an act of liberation. We set that person free from the negative bonds that exist between us. We say, "I no longer hold your offense against you" But there is more. We also free ourselves from the burden of being the "offended one." As long as we do not forgive those who have wounded us, we carry them with us or, worse, pull them as a heavy load. The great temptation is to cling in anger to our enemies and then define ourselves as being offended and wounded by them. Forgiveness, therefore, liberates not only the other but also ourselves. It is the way to the freedom of the children of God."

~ Henri Nouwen

On this Thursday, I give thanks for ....

* fighting off a cold - thank you zinc & vitamin C
* forgiving myself and others - a work in progress
* my five senses intact - sight, hearing, tasting, touching and smelling
* birds singing after a day of heavy rain
* looking forward to a bike ride with Maha on Sunday - beginning of a streak?
* first cup of coffee
* a reminder last night of the need for constant vigilance in mindless eating
* as always, a life worth living, possibilities and freedom to choose

Intelligence and capability are not enough. There must be the joy of doing something beautiful.
-- Dr. Govindappa Venkataswamy

Good morning,

Before plunging into the completion of homework for my 8:00am class, I come here to gain perspective~~

~ yesterday was a good day, though my tendency is to judge myself because I didn't get *everything* done

~ I got some major organizing and cleaning done, which gave me an inner sense of greater clarity

~ slowly moving back into exercise, so important for my health and welfare

~ beginning to think about tacking food again, which was what got me moving back toward my *fighting weight* pre-holidays

~ forgiving myself, over and over and over again (thank you for that excellent blog, Sandra)

~ freshly made bed with flannel sheets, ahhhhhhh....

Blessed be,
xox

Extremely grateful for so many things...always... And tonight, the list includes
* Recalling and mentioning an event in my life that was significant enough to be "thanked and excused" from a position on a jury, which would have been a very long and difficult trial. (Just as an FYI, I've served on 3 juries in the past, so I truly have done my "civil duty" as pointed out by the judge...)
* A long, luxurious nap when I got home after spending two full days in the jury box
* Great discovery of a Weds night vegetarian Indian buffet for only $8.99 and sharing it with friends
* Sunshine and a walk through a park in downtown Sacramento...ah...the wonderful energy there
* The quiet comfort I share with my hubby. Both snuggled up with a book.

Whew!

Got some rest after my Brazilian public hospital experience on Monday and Tuesday
Boy with broken finger has little pain and is upbeat in spite of a skateboard ban for who knows how long
Plans for family vacation time next week are still good
Found what I need to change bandages on finger until we go back to hospital
My boys are wild, but I love them and they love me!

Today I'm grateful for...

Sandra's joy in releasing another 2 pounds for a total of 17. Congratulations. WTG Sandra!
All that's right in my life and here,
The good health my family and I enjoy.
My DD, an independent woman. I always believed my job as a parent was to help my daughter become as independent as possible so she can manage without me. Lol, I did such a good job that she doesn't seem to need me anymore. Oh, well.

Thankful for...

a new night time ritual with my seven year old DD. She started asking for me to sing to her at night (I used to do this with my older kids but had let the practice lapse when 2 kids became 4). Last night, she surprised me by having learned the words to 3 "mommy special songs" and sang along with me. Moment complete when my 15 y/o ( 6 ft 1 little boy in a man's body) DS came running into her room exclaiming, "I remember those songs" and joined in.

the demon cat who considers mommy "home" and comes when I whistle and yes - I laughed at how ridiculous that is when I typed it. No one has told this little bundle that he is indeed a cat and I'm not about to "box him in" LOL. He joined our family the day after my sister died and he's made it his personal mission to love on mommy at every possible opportunity.

personal struggle - my DH's weight loss now puts him only a few pounds heavier than me and a few of the pounds he lost I apparently found yesterday after typing proudly about my own weight loss. This was greeted by (private) self disgust immediately but is now replaced by more resolve than ever.

this community - yesterday's self-disgust had me posed to type some snarky response that I'm not where I should be to remain in the amazing company that is this community. But today my goal is to be elevated by all your amazing selves :).

Tonight, I am grateful for:

-The opportunity to try again to get my evening gratitudes to post without my computer timing out
-A wonderful dinner cooked by my partner and I didn't lift a finger (well, I did clean up after)
-Trader Joe's cards, a relatively new discovery for me, very reasonable ($1) and many are quite nice and even special (and, of course, made of recycled paper)
-Sandra's soul-lifting confessions and releasing of weight
-Maha's memories from last trip to Ecuador via FB pictures
-Picking up a Latin American Spanish phrasebook today
-A friend from my coffee/tea house offering to make me a copy of his Rosetta Stone CDs for Latin American Spanish
-Making plans for the 4 days I'll be flat on my back after foot surgery over Easter weekend (including language lessons!!!) - just want to learn enough to get around and communicate a little bit with my little guy we sponsor and his family (we'll have a translator)
-My warm and comfortable bed, which like Kathy, is calling me NOW!!!

Goodnight all ...

Stephanie

Grateful this Tuesday

* For one of my family members stepping up when needed.
* For having the most chaotic morning...most of it out of my control...knowing it was all nothing in the big picture, and being able to just flow with it as a result.
* That I survived my first day of jury duty this time 'round....and yes, I am at this point Juror #4 (The attorneys will finalize jury selection tomorrow)
* For a glorious sunset this evening to restore balance
* That I am on my way to bed NOW! rather than at midnight or later....
