Tonight, I end my day with gratitude for:

-The absolutely, stunning, beautiful day ... a really nice one!!
-Super workouts (yes, an hour of cardio AND full body strength training)
-A National Geographic 3-hour special on the Galapagos Islands (I'm pondering a visit while in Chile in 2012) that my partner spotted and DVRd for me
-A wonderful folk concert tonight, Cheryl Wheeler (Peter, Paul & Mary recorded one of her songs)
-Making good use out of waking up at 5:30 a.m.
-Being able to drop some food at Harvesters today, taking the first step in helping to clean out the trunk of my car where I've been carrying the food

Goodnight all ...

This last day of April I am thankful for ...

* a three mile walk up and down hills -- longer than I've walked in a decade
* making my list and checking it twice - finals, packing, kitty, etc.
* 11 days until we leave for Greece
* dinner with friends tonight
* leisurely breakfast with Maha yesterday
* two spectacularly beautiful days between storms
* as always, a life worth living, possibilities & freedom to choose

shine,
Sandra

Well, I daresn't allow this wild month to close without coming around to be thankful...

... for dear friends.

... for wonderful people who work hard every day to help me help a population who sincerely benefits from my efforts... A DAY for Administrative Assistants (or whatever the popular nomenclature is today for the ones who do all the heavy lifting in businessWorld) is NOT enough.

... for weather that was not even more devastating than it was which is about all I can think to be thankful for when so many have had so much taken... especially in the lives that were lost.

... I am so thankful for the people who work to help the animals who were separated from their families... injured and afraid... during the storms.

... I am thankful for the gift of this team and the members who gather here in the face of everything... illness and busy-ness and sadness and joy... I am thankful to have a place to come and breathe and reflect and gather myself to move forward again...

Look out, May... we're on our way!!!

So much of modern life is a feverish anticipation of future activity and excitement. We have to learn to step back from this into the freedom and possibility of the present.
-- Fr. Bede Griffiths

Good morning! Riding on the wings of the wonderful weather over the last couple days as the gray skies close in and storms are predicted for the weekend. Giving thanks for~~

~ the rich wisdom that has come to us from Benedictine monk Bede Griffiths, also known as Swami Dayananda, who was part of the Christian Ashram Movement, most of his monastic life having been spent in India

~ yoga class this morning

~ habits I've learned over the years that contribute to my good health

~ congestion and sinus drainage mostly cleared up this morning

~ enjoyable dinner with friends last night (I had a wonderful, huge salad) when our prison trip had to be aborted because of closed roads (from the tornados)

~ "cultivating" my second batch of mung sprouts which add so much LIFE and nutritional density to my salads

Blessed be!

Morning all - I too would like to follow Maha's example and start with a quote...

“I will not die an unlived life. I will not live in fear of falling or catching fire. I choose to inhabit my days, to allow my living to open me, to make me less afraid, more accessible, to loosen my heart until it becomes a wing, a torch, a promise. I choose to risk my significance; to live so that which came to me as a seed goes to the next as a blossom and that which came to me as a blossom, goes on as fruit.” Dawna Markova, Ph.D - Writer, speaker

Many continued blessings

- fabulous spring morning and expected temperatures in the 70s
- intense color and fragrance of tree and shrub blossoms
- flat of annuals to add color to the garden
- steaks on the grill (always happy when the DH cooks!)

Namaste all

Today's gratitudes:

-- a much better day at work!

-- a coworkers' funny stories about her Weimeraner puppy--a real handful, albeit a funny and lovable one!

-- having the wisdom to help my sister make a decision regarding a medical situation she needs to address.

-- the royal wedding...strangely, I am anticipating this, though I doubt I'll be getting up in the middle of the night to watch! Maybe because I can still clearly remember watching Prince Charles' and Lady Diana's wedding on TV when I was young.

--the music of Loreena McKennitt...listening to "Huron Beltane Fire Dance" and making my own plans for Beltane this weekend...

--new Sparkfriends!

--thoughts and prayers to all affected by this week's terrible storms; hope anyone affected on this team is at least safe.

Blessed Be.

There she goes again... always on point, the Maha is...

As irrigators lead water where they want, as archers make their arrows straight, as carpenters carve wood, the wise shape their minds.
-- The Buddha

InDEED...

Today..

Imma be thankful that the irrigator of the water INTO MAH BASEMENT, chose not to start in earnest until I woke up this morning and got down there to get the 87 rolls of Christmas paper outta the way this time!!!

THEN, Imma be thankful I was able to shape my mind into how to get around all the blocked off streets in Mooville frm all the water to get into this office that would OBVIOUSLY have to shut down without me (*not*)...

and NOW Imma apply the shape of my mind to how I'm gonna get back to the house so I can see if the water if still coming up and I have to scramble some more stuff around or if it's goin' back down again because the SUN she is a-SHINING and that's always a thing to be thankful for...

BOY, did it RAIN last night!!!

Had One Of Those Days at work that makes gratitude difficult, but today I am thankful for:

-- having progressed to the point in my emotional development that a rough day does not crush me.

-- having a job that pays enough to meet my obligations.

-- an email from my sister, asking for my advice. This does not happen often.

-- the outlet for my aggressions and frustrations that is heavy metal music...and being unashamed to admit that yes, I am a fortysomething metalhead!!! \m/

-- the knowledge that the Sun will come up tomorrow, and I can start anew...

Tonight, I end my day in gratitude for:

-An overdue due with an old friend of ours
-Thai food (I love curry)
-A very old picture of me (age 11) that one of my dear friends found with my little sister at age 3 (we don't have many pictures of us together at that age)
-Getting a copy of the picture made and sending it to my sister as a surprise
-Being able to get through today even though I was yawning constantly, more due to the dreary weather than lack of sleep

Goodnight all -

SEARCHING FOR THE DHARMA (the "Way")

You've traveled up ten thousand steps in search of the Dharma.
So many long days in the archives, copying, copying.

The gravity of the Tang and the profundity of the Sung
make heavy baggage.

Here! I've picked you a bunch of wildflowers.
Their meaning is the same
but they're much easier to carry.

-- Xu Yun, from Empty Cloud: The Autobiography of the Chinese Zen Master

Good morning,

I guess I've spent most of my life in one way or another searching for the Dharma, "copying, copying." As I'll bet Stephanie would agree, the Beauty Path of gathering wildflowers is a better "way"!

Here to give thanks this morning~~

~ making it through another day

~ the amazing healing power of sleep to elicit hope

~ a tornado touching down a few miles away, but in the midst of storm and siren, we were safe

~ translation finished for today's class, leaving time to focus on the field study paper

~ the healing power of friends, buoying and offering loving encouragement

Blessed be,

Back after a couple of days out of town with DH. I am thankful for:

--- The beauty of nature.

--- The fact that I have survived 42 years on this earth; believe me, there were times when it looked like that would not happen.

--- Those who serve our country; I toured the VA facility where my husband has been doing his externship work.

--- Being able to take a three-mile hike with DH...even if I did get a little sunscorched!

I'm home! That's #1 thankful thing!

My weekend was good even though there was lots of work.

Had a great helper at the retreat center to work in my place in the canteen.

Good staff in kitchen needed little supervision or help.

My youngest who hurt his foot during the retreat is okay and no broken bones.

Getting ready to eat lamb for supper given to me by a special friend.

Night all!

As this Easter day is winding down, I express gratitude
* For a non-tradtional Easter spent without friends or family
* For seeing spring in all its glory
* For working in the yard and seeing the results of the labor...rosebuds are aphid free, citrus trees are fed, pool is clean and the HEATER IS ON! (meaning I'll be swimming tomorrow!)
* For being able to pray for the person who took my phone, rather than to wish evil upon him/her.
* For learning a lesson about mindfulness, carelessness, and how to say no.
* For being able to (finally) set limits after my "volunteer project" has almost eaten me alive.
* For the hope and expectations that springtime brings every year...year after year...and that I am here once again to experience it.

OHMIGOSH!

The reckless bloom of our nation's capitol is almost beyond comprehension from just last weekend to this!

Nevermind the ceaseless yap of nonsense that flaps forth from the gums of the jowls of the town... just the soup of dirt and rain and seed and bulb and grass and squirrel cross-pollination of the acorns to the next yard over and the blare of flowering EVERYTHING!!!

Holy Moley!

It's almost too much for the brain to take in before you've had any coffee!!!!

But I have had at least a cup so far and it is somethin' to behold in this here neck o' the woods this morning..

Thank you, Spring.

I'm glad you showed up SOMEPLACE!!!!

Everything is blooming most recklessly; if it were voices instead of colors, there would be an unbelievable shrieking into the heart of the night.
--Rainer Maria Rilke

Good morning! Thanks be for the nubile shades of green growth all about and the infinite variations of color in the reckless blossoms of this season of newness of life. And for~~

~ the quietness of early morning

~ always, the gift of the new day, the present moment

~ the beauty and genius of Rainer Maria Rilke's body of work

~ yesterday's "desperation" bike ride that provided an escape from the milieu of out-of-control eating, achieving some badly needed movement, and racking up some badly needed exercise minutes to boot

~ the continuous learning of being content with my own company

~ an amazing Yoga Sutra 1:33, known as "the four locks and the four keys," that spoke to me deeply this morning: "By cultivating attitudes of friendliness toward the happy, compassion for the unhappy, delight in the virtuous and disregard toward the wicked (or wicked behavior), the mind-stuff retains its undisturbed calmness." The accompanying commentary with a parable by Swami Satchidananda provided a beacon lighting my way to deep understanding

Today I am thankful for:

--a wonderful dinner out a Cuban restaurant last night; Black bean soup, arroz con pollo... and mojitos! (In moderation, of course!) Even my notoriously meat-and-potatoes Dad enjoyed himself!

--a chance to do some self-pampering today...a haircut, and a badly needed pedicure.

--my wonderful hubby doing the laundry!

--watching "The Ten Commandments" on TV; it was a tradition growing up, and though I no longer consider myself Christian, it still holds nostalgia and meaning.

--family, music, nature, sunshine and friends...in person, and on Sparkpeople!

Blessings to all...

Whatever is flexible and flowing will tend to grow; whatever is rigid and blocked will wither and die.
-- Tao Te Ching, via SP Healthy Reflections

Good morning! So happy to be among all of you, a special tribe indeed! Giving thanks~~

~ the particular wisdom that strikes me so often with SPeople's Healthy Reflection series, definitely a cut apart, with at least partial contributions by a staff person on a thriving spiritual path

~ my resilient spirit

~ the field study paper, challenging and jagged around the edges, but slowly beginning to develop a shape and focus

~ a conversation regarding a well-paid bi-lingual position with an interested employer giving me a glimmer of hope that I will eventually find some kind of edifying part time employment (this job is out of question because of my summer trip to Ecuador)

~ the Friday gathering with inmate friends which makes me very humble; the prison outreach frequently causing a radical adjustment of perspective

SP Healthy Reflections Commentary:
How Well do You Roll with the Punches?

Change is the natural order of the world. When something tries to stand against the force of change, it's eventually destroyed. Cliffs are eroded, trees are uprooted, granite cracks. People can crack too. For us to grow and live--to flourish--it takes adaptation and learning. Stubborn attachment to a single set of "knowledge" or way of doing things leads to stagnation of the mind and spirit.

Remember to keep an open mind to new people and new ideas. Challenge yourself to always be learning something new. Focus on the possibilities of a fresh start, instead of hanging on to old frustrations. Sails are made with cloth for a reason. When they're stiff, winds beat against them until they tear. But if the sails are relaxed and workable, the wind can take the boat to places it has never been before.

Tonight, I end my day in gratitude for:

-An incredible and amazing massage tonight - we had to try out a therapist who comes to your home before purchasing a massage as a gift for my dear friend (now purchased - does that speak loudly enough??!!!)
-Getting TONS done today in preparation of the big party tomorrow night for my dear friend/second mother who is turning 70
-The honor and privilege of being able to do this for her ... trying to make her birthday as special as can be
-Lots of new beautiful flowers found and being planted (we should have a party every spring to get us started "beautifying" earlier in the spring ... now we'll have tons of time to enjoy the marigolds and pansies and other goodies
-Our water gardener who helps us so much and is just a great guy
-Feeling pretty relaxed and laid back for me tonight, given we're expecting 60+ people tomorrow ... highly unusual for my MO and I believe I can credit it to the massage
-My warm and comfy bed, and it's calling me right now ...

Goodnight all ...

Tonight, I end my day with gratitude for:

-Laughter (I LOVE Bob being ready to have the chiropractor's baby!!!) - HUGE, deep belly laughter
-A note from Trace today ... always makes me smile
-Finding INCREDIBLE planters today for our front porch and back deck, just in time for the big party that's happenin' at our place Saturday night to celebrate a 70th birthday and LIFE (for my dear friend and second mother who will likely be celebrating her last birthday with us)
-Having a 4-day weekend as I get Good Friday off (go figure, we go by the New York Stock Exchange holidays - which do NOT include the day after Thanksgiving, but DO include a religious holiday) - I took an extra day of vacation for Monday to recup from the big party
-Our yard and water gardens looking hugely spiffy much earlier in the year than ever before, all motivated by this party
-An amazingly beautiful bright pink azalea bush blooming on one side of the water gardens

Have an excellent evening everybody!

Howdy ya'll and yu'uns!

Today I am thankful for:

*my spark buddies checking in and posting there supportive comments.
*a good 6 month check-up on my eye that had the torn retina, and cataract surgery. Whew! Also glad my eyes are fine right now and just super strained. If anyone asks, you never saw a mail from me, since I am not on the computer.
*multiple OMG cracks from chiropractor yesterday. After the fourth big, deep adjustment on my neck, I was ready to have his baby- he was glad for my relief, but didn't share my way of thanking him.

Have a wonderful Easter Weekend my dear bunnies! bob

Today I am greatful for:

--My husband getting his first interview for an echo tech position tomorrow! Only a part-time position, but it is a start!

--Family and friends...my parents & sister coming to town to help me celebrate my birthday this weekend!

--Getting a few days' break from watching my niece while she and her mom head home for mom's Easter break (my SIL is a full-time Laboratory Science student right now.) I love her dearly, but need a rest.

--Being able to see the light at the end of the data entry tunnel at work...thanks to some heavy-duty data entry time today, and the music (Cynic, Times Of Grace, Killswitch Engage) that helped me plow through it!

Finish each day and be done with it. You did what you could...
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson via Healthy Reflections

Good morning! Making lemonade out of lemons this morning~~

~ doing the *happy dance* for the good news from Sandra and Kathy, dissolving their prior anxiety and frustration

~ more challenges with internet connection card, so I will be online in a very limited way

~ couldn't sleep last night, so I got an assignment due Thursday done

~ not hearing from source of assistance in the field study project, so focusing on other parts of the paper

~ not really ready for vocal performance this morning, but the knowledge that "this is it" helps me to focus and be as prepared as possible

Blessed be!

Commentary from Healthy Reflections:

GIVING IT YOUR ALL

If you can do your best and forget your worst, you've already got a head start on today. As long as you lay it out there every day, you can relax when yesterday is behind you. Of course, the only way this will happen is if you give yourself permission to (forgive yourself and) forget.

You can use this approach in anything: Pick up a problem, do what you can with it, and then put it down. Work your tail off at the office, then leave it there (the work, not your tail). Deal with a personal crisis by finishing off one day at a time.

There's a great deal of satisfaction in leaving things be for a moment. There's a great deal of freedom in knowing that you could do no more. And there's a great deal of success awaiting the person who gives it her all, no matter what.

Strength does not come from physical capacity.
It comes from an indomitable will.

Grateful tonight, more than words can say
* That my son and family are safe in Morocco
* That the absence of communication was simply due to them being in the desert with no internet or phone service.
* For their adventuresome spirits and the amazing life experiences they provide for the grandkids
* For yummy, homemade jambalaya, cloudy skies and the movie Dr. Zhivago
* For my husband getting his hearing aids today...and finding them remarkably comfortable.
* For my life, and all its abundance....and the knowledge that I can take none of it, in any area, for granted.

The Muslim community is a subtle world we don't fully -- and don't always -- attempt to understand. Only through a shared appreciation of the people's culture, needs, and hopes for the future can we hope ourselves to supplant the extremist narrative. We cannot capture hearts and minds. We must engage them, we must listen to them, one heart and one mind at a time.
-- Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (from STONES INTO SCHOOLS)

Good morning! Here to "share the LOVE" (well, if the Kellogg's FiberPlus ad at the top of this page says it, I can certainly say it too...and with true sincerity)~~

~ a deeply meaningful conversation with Annie yesterday, a dear San Francisco friend

One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love.
-- Leo Tolstoy

Good morning! Giving thanks~~

~ hopeful about work possibilities for a future in Ecuador that I will do reconnaissance on this summer

~ fortunate that I have the joy of giving and receiving love to and from dear friends in this life

~ looking forward to Saturday morning yoga and then lunch with a friend

~ enjoyed some success in practicing being PRESENT yesterday -- instead of worrying about a possible outcome I, for instance, looked up at the amazing patten of clouds in a whitish circle with a lovely blue center in the middle hole and reveled in the beauty

~ another day, another opportunity to be PRESENT

Blessed be!

Yep. In or out.

My mom said that a lot... but it was usually because we kids couldn't make up our minds and banged the screen door a lot...

I am thankful for a Friday that is sunny and almost warmish... I am getting out of this office early today if I have to hurt people to make it happen...

Oh. That's not too in the spirit of things, now, is it? Well. No, it's not but it IS indicative of how MUCH I need to GET OUT OF THIS OFFICE EARLY TODAY!!!!

I also know where I'm picking up some veg. sushi rolls for dinner tonight and I am THANKFUL for Trader Joe's, YOU BET!!!!

NOM NOM NOM NOM...

(I'd do it myself but I try not to attempt more than one technical culinary event a weekend and I've already decided tomorrow is pad thai so...)

(Those ARE sushi rolls, aren't they?!)
