Last day of February! And at the end of this shorter than usual month, I express thanksgiving
* For a wonderful gathering of friends today, celebrating each other...our annual tradition!
* The BEST polenta dish made with ingredients already in the kitchen
* A Saturday night at home, cozy in my nightie, with two cats and a snuggly hubby
* That I am able to work through the angst about my back and the limitations I may be facing.
* For the documentary channel. Sure makes me feel "NOT guilty" for watching TV.

On this chilly Saturday evening I am thankful for:

--layers of clothing to keep me warm, so I don't have to turn on my furnace very often

--a good telephone visit with my intrepid Dad

--goat cheese

--attention to my food choices becoming a habit

--seeing Rebecca's cheerful blue chair

--Happy Destiny's return

--Stephanie inspiring me with all her hard schoolwork

--another free night to cocoon

--the fresh start of a new week and a new month to continue on my path

--all the dear people here who keep me aware of the good in humans.

Waving wildly below to Norlana!!! Hellllllllooooo!
Didn't you just get back from a vacation? Or maybe that was a working trip! In any event, I see you're dancing off again (pun intended) ...

On this snowy Saturday, my gratitudes include all of this, yet so much more:
1. Getting standard deviations down to an art!
2. Learning to develop an appreciation for charts, graphs, Excel, and the many other pieces of statistics that were initially so frightening!;
3. Soup - such a soul warmer on a cold winter day;
4. The absolute pleasure and joy of watching those big, soft snowflakes coming down at a good pace and the appreciation of such a winter wonderland in my back yard;
5. The weekend - a nice break from work routine!

Have a lovely day everybody. Will hopefully see you tomorrow on the new thread!

Stephanie

Grateful for a good work day yesterday (telecommuting) and for getting a number of things done. Grateful for a good night's sleep and for a silly (bad) puppy dog, who just chewed up her first shoe! (comes with the territory, and I need to be more careful about leaving shoes out).

Grateful for a nice clear cold day and just for being alive.

Late, late, Friday night, and I am thankful
* For the great, upbeat lunch with former co-workers. Lots of laughter and sharing of "stories"
* For finally getting complete x-ray results, which showed "old" compression fracture (made so much more sense to me) and other issues that explain a whole lot.
* For getting my new "cubie" all set up today.
* Marriage of Figaro
* Figuring out what I am wearing, cooking, and drinking tomorrow at our annual luncheon where a group gathers with the simple purpose of celebrating our womanhood.

On this cold Friday, my gratitudes include all of this, yet so much more:
1. The end of another productive work week;
2. A solid night of rest;
3. Hearing of two friends that got jobs this week (both laid off from where I work last fall);
4. Spinach, mushroom, red onion and egg salad - one of my favorites, with abundant leftovers to take home from work;
5. Hope - I'm going to need as much of it as I can muster to complete a marathon of statistics exams this weekend;
6. Improvement on working in exercise this past week; and
7. Always, always, always - my health and the many options I have available to me to try and help myself stay healthy, even when I don't always take full advantage!

Have a great evening everybody!

Oh, my it has been a long day, but I am thankful
* That I was physically able to make it. Despite back problem, have not missed a day of work!
* For a delightful send off to my preceptor who has been promoted and left today.
* For another dear friend who also had a going away party today that I would have had to miss...she was summoned to jury duty, and it was postponed until tomorrow!
* For finally having my own cubicle, and a phone. (ah, simple pleasures)
* For my hubby who made cranberry sauce (from fresh frozen berries) for the first time ever tonight!
* For being reminded NOT being mindful and moving in slow motion does cause relapse.
* For still laughing in response to the 2009 scarf, which also brought laughter to many friends.

After a very busy day--mentally and physically--I rejoice in coming here and reading your posts. Among the many things I am thankful for:

--a safe round trip on freeways that I find a bit scary, because I almost never drive on them

--enjoying an oh-so savory Hunan lunch and stopping before I was "full"

--a good meeting with a colleague and friend and the possibility of doing some projects with him

--discovering the new-to-me Mayocoba bean used in South American cooking (Maha, bet you're familiar with it!)

--the good tired that comes from a productive and pleasant day

--a free night to relax at whatever beckons me

--the prospect of reading in bed with my new, full-spectrum lamp (guess what's beckoning me)

--the pure magic of life

Peace and blessings,

On this drizzly Thursday, my gratitudes include all of this, yet so much more:
1. The light rain, which will give us a much nicer spring to enjoy soon!;
2. Learning how to disengage (Maha, sound familiar?) from the craziness of my statistics curriculum that keeps changing assignments mid-assignment (so frustrating);
3. Excellent run of eating leftovers and older food from the freezer, to eventually clean out the old and bring in the better new!!;
4. Early arrival of income tax refund; and
5. Good financial choices!

Have a great day everybody!

Hello Everyone! I'm traveling on business and my computer died for good. I am posting from the hotel business center and only have a few minutes ...

~ Grateful that I could find a dealership close-by to look at my car and they provided me with shuttle service back to my hotel and will pick me up again later

~ For my niece who I am travelling with and her enthusiasm to learn and grow with us

~ For a lovely evening reconnecting with my Sweetheart before we both set off again on trips

~ That yesterday was officially his last day with his long time employer. I am thankful for his hard work, stellar career, diligence, honesty, brilliance and steadfast desire to make our life better

~ That he rec'd a severance package which will help for a few months and that we've been diligent over the years in saving so we have a little cushion until he finds something

~ That two prospective and interesting employers have called, interviewed and asked for 2nd interviews

Hope you are all well!

Norlana

Today, may I make good decisions that create positive outcomes and may I have wonderful, loving people in my life to share this awesome journey with.

Good morning! Heh heh Snogum -- Feb 29? Uhhh, not this year. How I wish I could join you for the retreat!!! And Momma Dot, we missed you and your *sunshine* too!

I'm singing praises for many reasons...among them ~~

~ the plumber's coming this morning to help with some kitchen rearrangements that will provide an easier and more pleasant environment to cook in

~ for another intense lesson in the importance of disengaging to avoid emotionally toxic contamination

~ the White House's stately East Room was transformed into an intimate, miniature concert hall last night for President Obama to present my hero Stevie Wonder with the second annual Gershwin Award for Lifetime Achievement from the US Library of Congress www.google.com/hostednews/afp/articl
e/
ALeqM5j0a93WyMxjeAz0Ph4TZmJeuYMq3g

~ my birthday present to me, spiffy and super-comfortable walking shoes, arrived from Land's End yesterday

~ my bike is ready to be picked up, serviced and with a new chain...and today is DEFINITELY a day to ride!

Blessed be!
xox
Maha
P.S. Awwwww, Michelle -- referencing that wonderful neighborhood and square, where I've hung out on so many occasions, makes me really homesick!

P.P.S. Kathy, I have a DVD of Itzhak Perlman and Yo Yo Ma performing with the NY Symphony Orchestra at Lincoln Center which includes amazing footage of rehearsals and pre-concert prep. What masters! Lucky you!!!

This morning I am thankful for

- Recognizing a dream as a dream, and so, not taking it seriously and then waking myself up from it.

- The prospect of taking two weeks to do silent retreat (that means I will not be posting from the 29th Feb till the 16th of March - I will take you all in my heart!)

- getting back into a regime of 8 hours of slumber a night. Aaaaah

- another brilliant sunny morning

- the kindness and positive intention of so many people around me

Rebecca...this past weekend I was telling my granddaughter about the fun book series Encyclopedia Brown. I had to define, then spell, encyclopedia...and *I* was singing that song! AND could spell it easily! Too funny!

After an incredible concert tonight at the Mondavi Center for Performing Arts, I am thankful
* For the gift of Itzhak Perlman...how this man took his pain, his limitations, his sufferings, and turned them around to bless the world with his talent.
* For running into, and reconnecting with, a series of friends unexpectedly at the concert...one of which I hadn't seen for 12 years!
* For the reminders of my family history and how the collective consciousness just knows some things...
* For the conversation with our waiter tonight and how touched both hubby and I were to hear him express his gratitudes so openly.
* For willingly choosing to practice Lenten traditions starting tomorrow...especially refraining from bitter words, judgmental attitudes, and self indulgent behavior. No guilt. Just awareness of need for a more disciplined life.
* That my son, who was working in San Diego today, was able to stop by my folks to share a meal and spend the night.

Good morning! Here are a few of my gratitudes~~

~ in contrast to the quiet and slightly melancholy birthday yesterday, the shout-outs of love and support from ALL OF YOU in this precious community buoyed me up and brought great "joy inside my tears" (that wonderful Stevie Wonder song)

~ Stevie's talent and his happy, hopeful sound and lyrics; he has always been a hero of mine

~ EXTREME EXCITEMENT at hearing this morning from the administrator of the Administrator of the Legal Research Bureau of the Legislative Counsel re: being able to attend the public hearings on the proposal and sign up to speak before the committee considering the proposal; what a great response to efforts yesterday, "my birthday gift to me," to obtain financial aid for prisoners who wish to attend college!

~ the way Rumi speaks so profoundly to my heart, mind and soul (see my SP blog today if you want to read the poem that so deeply touched me)

~ the book, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln (by Doris Kearns Goodwin), that just arrived yesterday (and was FREE) via the group I participate in, Paper Back Swap!

Blessed be!

On this rainy, rainy day...I am thankful
* For, like Smashy also noticed, the beautiful breaks in the storms to let the sunshine through.
* For 11 hours of well needed healing sleep.
* For going all day without pain medication.

Good morning! I'm quietly reflective on this day that 67 years ago I entered the planet with the sun in Pisces. Since I have no plans and don't expect any material offerings, I'm accepting each thing that comes today as a special gift to be thoughtfully enjoyed and grateful for~~

~ HAPPY BIRTHDAY FROM SPARKPEOPLE

Don't just count the years; make the years count.
-- Ernest Meyers

What matters most in life is often viewed as peripheral to the things that we usually focus on. Passion takes a backseat to production, wellness to working, and balance to busyness. The old adage that "life is not a dress rehearsal" is so true, and yet we act to the contrary by putting off what is truly important or indulging in things that are not. On your birthday, stop focusing on your age and start meditating on your life at this exact moment. How can you make it better? During the next year, reshuffle your priorities. Spend more time with family and friends, take care of your body and health by eating well and exercising regularly, and offer to help others in need. Discover what matters most to you , and make your daily life into a true reflection of those ideas, beliefs, and attitudes. Have a happy and healthy brithday!
-- Team Spark People

~ FOR THE UNKNOWN SELF

So much of what delights and troubles you
Happens on a surface
You take for ground.
Your mind thinks your life alone,
Your eyes consider air your nearest neighbor,
Yet it seems that a little below your heart
There houses in you an unknown self
Who prefers the patterns of the dark
And is not persuaded by the eye's affection
Or caught by the flash of thought.

It is a self that enjoys contemplative patience
With all your unfolding expression,
Is never drawn to break into light
Though you entangle yourself in unworthiness
And misjudge what you do and who you are.

It presides within like an evening freedom
That will often see you enchanted by twilight
Without ever recognizing the falling night,
It resembles the under-earth of your visible life:
All you do and say and think is fostered
Deep in its opaque and prevenient clay.

It dwells in a strange, yet rhythmic ease
That is not ruffled by disappointment;
It presides in a deeper current of time
Free from the force of cause and sequence
That otherwise shapes your life.

Were it to break forth into day,
Its dark light might quench your mind,
For it knows how your primeval heart
Sisters every cell of your life
To all your known mind would avoid,

Thus it knows to dwell in you gently,
Offering you only discrete glimpses
Of how you construct your life.

At times, it will lead you strangely,
Magnetized by some resonance
That ambushes your vigilance.

It works most resolutely at night
As the poet who draws your dreams,
Creating for you many secret doors,
Decorated with pictures of your hunger;

It has the dignity of the angelic
That knows you to your roots,
Always awaiting your deeper befriending
To take you beyond the threshold of want,
Where all your diverse strainings
Can come to wholesome ease.
-- John O'Donohue
(To Bless the Space Between Us)

~ WORD FOR THE DAY:

Courage and perseverance have a magical talisman, before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish into air.
-- John Quincy Adams

~ THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

The control of the palate is a valuable aid for the control of the mind.
-- Mahatma Gandhi

I first became interested in improving my diet under the influence of Mahatma Gandhi, who used to include articles on diet and health in his weekly newspaper along with all the latest political news. I had been brought up on traditional South Indian cuisine. I had enjoyed it all thoroughly, but I had never asked what the purpose of food is. At Gandhis prompting, I started asking this kind of question and concluded to my great surprise that food is meant to nourish the body.

I started changing. I began to eat foods that wouldnt have appealed to me in earlier days. Now asparagus tastes better than chocolate torte.

The palate is the ideal starting point for getting some mastery over your senses. You have three, four, maybe more opportunities a day: breakfast, lunch, dinner, and any number of between-meal snacks. No need to talk of fasting or strange diets. Just resolve to move away from foods that dont benefit your health and begin choosing foods that do.
-- Eknath Easwaran

~ Today I offer myself these particular gifts:

* I plan to begin the advanced language program at the university language lab
* I'm taking my bike in for repair
* I'm calling the office of the AR Speaker of the House re: inclusion of prisoners in allocation of lottery monies (100% of monies were designated for education)

Blessed be!

Home from a quick trip to San Diego, and expressing thanksgiving...
* For these miraculous things called airplanes. The ability to take a bus through the sky. This amazing event we often just take for granted. (I always sit in a window seat...and look out in awe)
* For taking a break from the activity this morning to lay in a quiet room with my legs elevated.
* For seeing my dad so enjoy having the family celebrating his birthday with him.
* For hearing the sound of rain, getting soaked and splashing in the puddles upon arriving home.
* For getting to sleep in my own bed tonight.

Grateful for a great puppy girl, who is growing up to be an even nicer dog, and who goes to look for my cat, when I mention her name.

For a beautiful snowy day, sunshine.

For the fact that the horrible 50-60 car pileup on I-94 that nobody was hurt, as far as I know. (that's my hometown highway, so I drive that route fairly often. No, i wasn't in or near it, thankfully. When the whiteout started happening, I headed home & I drove slow! )

For the peace I have found today. And for my new shredder, which my puppy thinks is fun. She grabs at the mail as it goes in (I watch, as I'm nervous about her getting caught in it) and watches the bits fall to the bottom in the plastic window. Puppies show you the fun & surprise of life so well!
