Thank you both for your explanations. Helps me understand the science behind the mechanism of keto. I especially like the red/green marble analogy.

After 5 months of strict keto, I'm mostly green by now. I took an IR test, and measured 2.7. I think that is pretty good - my insulin resistance is not super high. So my fat burning should be pretty good. I'm still not losing quickly, but as Holly has said again and again - I feel so good!! I hope to lose more, but even if I don't lose but a pound or two a month, this is a way of eating I can do for the rest of my life.

I suspect having a glass of wine now and then prevents me from losing quickly, but it adds enjoyment to my life, and having that bit of enjoyment keeps me from dropping this as a lifestyle.

GRINGUITA has written a great reply. Lets see if I can add to it.

I think of insulin resistance as the fat cells filling up, and at some point being so full that they resist storing more. Like a person with too much work to do, if you give them more work, they will put up resistance.

Doing exercise, besides burning fuel (carbs or fat), will make cell walls less insulin resistant, and so easier to fuel.

In my opinion having a lower glucose level in your blood is better for weight loss, as you never have to deal with that excess of blood glucose in the first place. You don't need to burn it, or store it.

Imagine your body chemistry as a box of marbles, red and green. The red ones help burn carbs, an the green ones help burn fat. People who eat a lot of carbs have a lot of red marbles, and a some green ones. When they stop eating carbs, they just don't have enough green ones to burn fat very much, and they get hungry unless given more carbs. Over many weeks body chemistry changes and you have more green ones that red ones. Now you burn fat efficiently, and carbs not so much, and I think this is ketosis.

Body chemistry changes fairly slowly to be good at one or the other. In my opinion it is related to the seasons. Food sources slowly change with the seasons, and I think ones digestion does to.

I'll try.

Carbs cause your body to produce insulin. Insulin is used to process the carbs you eat but if you are insulin resistant this process doesn't work properly and the carbs (sugar) are not used for fuel and instead they are stored as fat and the body is not fueled properly (no energy). Meanwhile, the carbs (sugar) that are not being used for fuel are hanging out in the bloodstream and this means our blood has a higher glucose measurement. There are many factors at play here (some have probably not even been discovered) so it is not as simple as it sounds. I believe that insulin resistance is the cause of high blood sugar so they are both part of the process. Eating fewer carbs will lower blood sugar and over time our systems may heal so that we are less insulin resistant.

When you lower the number of carbs that you eat your body switches to burning fat for fuel. When this happens your body produces ketones which are used for fuel and you are in ketosis. This can happen in a few days depending on the individual body. However, it takes much longer for the body to become adapted to this method of fueling and that is called "being fat adapted". When you are fat adapted fat is your bodies preferred fuel.

I don't know if this will help or just make it more confusing. Our bodies have so many things going on that it's like a symphony rather than a solo or a duet.

So I was trying to explain Keto to someone. They are deep dive science people.

Can anyone explain the difference between lowering your insulin (reducing insulin resistance) and having a lower glucose level (diabetic measuring stick)? Which is better for losing fat/weight?

Also, what is the difference between "fat burning" and "being in ketosis"? I have heard that you can be in ketosis without burning fat, and you can burn fat without being in ketosis.

Anyone?
