I am doing the half this year. Did the realy last year. I plan on doing the half in DL and the Fall half as well. We will se how that goes. I have been loosely following the Furman Institutes 3 day per week plan. So far so good. I have to do 8 miles this weekend.

I saw a post from somebody about shin splints. I see a Chiropractor that specializes in Active Release Therapy (ART). Guy worked wonders on my calf, since my stress fracture last summer. PM me if you want his name and number.

Good luck to all!

I did the half marathon last year but won't be able to be in Fargo this year. I used Jeff Galloway's training program and running method which includes walk breaks. If you Google his name you will find his plan. It makes sense and it helps you finish in whatever time you set for yourself but not "hit the wall" since you take walk breaks to allow your muscles a break.

Good luck with the 10K! I don't live in the country, but there isn't anyplace safe to run outside in my town either. Heck, it's hardly safe to drive! The street department is suppose to be pushing the snow back to widen the driving space on the streets this week, but I haven't seen any work done in my area of town. Right now the snow takes up half of the driving lane on each side of the street. On streets that have a center lane for turning we have two full driving lanes. On streets that only have one lane going each way we have to pull to the side and take turns using the one lane available when we meet up with another car.

I really wish this stuff would melt, but I don't want it to melt too fast. The emergency manager's office is already talking about spring flooding if the snow thaws too quickly.

May you always have

Today I printed off the registration form for the 10K. I know I can do that. Part of me wants to push the limits and try for the half marathon, but I also worry that it will be too much. Especially since I live in the country and there isn't any place to start running where I won't slip and break my neck.

I just signed up this morning for the half marathon. I ran it in 2006 but hit a wall about half way thru. I still finished with a good time but was sore for the next week. I recently bought a new treadmill and have been running 3 miles, 4x a week and then one longer run a week (currently 4 miles but hope to add .5 to 1 mile each week). I need new shoes too - any suggestions? Good luck everyone!!

Congratulations on signing up for the half marathon. If you are in the Fargo area, you should consider signing up for the official training group. It offers a structured training plan (either beginner or intermediate), advice, and the long runs are done as a group on Saturday mornings. Let me know if you have questions about the training group or the event in general...

Hi - I just joined sparkpeople and was looking for some motivation. I ran the 5k last year at the Fargo Marathon and it was wonderful. I hadn't run anything before and I loved it (was sore for a few days, but still worth it!). This year I signed up for the half marathon. I have a long ways to go to get ready but I'm going to be there. Do any of you have any tips or tricks you could share?

Thanks!
Dawn

I've never taken part in an organized race. My friend and I have decided to sign up for the 10K. I read that you can walk in that one. Should be fun!

Couch to marathon runner in nine weeks? Wow, that is a fast progression. I don't think I've seen full marathon training programs shorter than 16 weeks. I've seen 10 week couch to 5K programs, but not beginning full marathon programs!

You are right -- it's never too late to start. I hope you continue to enjoy the gym.

Thanks, I just joined Gofar Women I really enjoy the workouts. The trainer gave me a nine week program called from Couch to marathon runner in nine weeks. I am on the third stage. When I see people jogging I envy them because I really would like to jog instead of walk. I just turned 42 & don't think it is too late to start trying. Look at the biggest loser,

Gummysmom: You should consider joining the official marathon training group. They will give you tips and a structured training plan. The weekly group long runs are a good form of accountability to make sure they get done!

It really stinks that your husband's new job will keep him from running in the Fargo Marathon, but don't be so quick to count yourself out. You have several months to look for a way to get there and participate. I know it won't be the same without your husband, but maybe you can still train together and you can find someone else to run with on the day of the marathon.

My husband just started a new job and he has his schedule for the whole next year and his schedule isn't going to work for us to run the Fargo Marathon. :( I'm so disappointed. I've been looking forward to this and working towards this for so long, I'm really bummed. We're trying to find a way to make it work, but so far, nothing. :(

I continue to take steps for them.

I know what you mean about the cold, TheFitMama. It's miserible when the temperature never gets above zero all day long. My treadmill is in the basement so at least I don't have to choose between freezing and using it. Our garage is heated because we used to keep our dog in the garage when no one was home. He has a doggie door that goes from the garage into the back yard so he can come and go as he pleases. Now that he's outgrown all that puppy foolishness and doesn't bother stuff in the house he stays in the house when we're not home.

Thanks for the tip about the Bismarck marathon, RFEARING1. I still want to do the Fargo marathon too. Bismarck is so much closer to Minot; it might be a better option. I'll check it out.

Its been so cold I have been a chicken and not willing to go in my unheated garage to run on the treadmill. Its been negative 10 here most days and so my garage would be 0 degrees. The insulation seems to keep the garage a 10 degrees warmer. I just need a space heater!

Thank you RFEARING1 ! I have a delimea maybe you runners could help with. I have a new pair of shoes. Asics 2150 and I bought this time a half a size up. I am not sure they are going to work. I did get shin splints in the end from my last pair that were not half a size up. I think that was because they were wore down in the front. What is your advice on shoes. I am just stuck on this one. I should mention I use my shoes for Kickboxing class too.

I found my runners world magazine Jan issue. On page 70 the Fargo Marathon was voted Best Value! People say you get what you pay for and there are nice perks. Also it was said that spectators are great and supportive. For the top 10 races all over the country Fargo ranked 8!!! Yeah especially because other big races we all think of were in the 30's and lower. Yeah Fargo!!

I have the motivation I am just lacking time during this CHRISTmas time. With all the activities parties, and church functions! Wheeww!! I am having a hard time squeezing in my time! I am so excited. The Runners World magazine had rated all the marathons across the country based a on a year long survey they took from fellow runners and Fargo was rated high on the list. I will post soon the exact standing that the Fargo Marathon got. I was so excited to see how well it did!

My husband and I walked the 5k last year and this year I want to run!!!! I want to run more than the 5k though, so I'm not sure if I'm going to run the half marathon or if we'll do the relay. I'm so excited!!!! It's such an amazing experience being there with all those runners and walkers, seeing all those people come together is pretty awesome. :) I'm so glad there are others talking about it!

Sounds great. I know what you mean about a drive. I don't have to drive quite as far but 2 1/2 hours to get there and the race starts I think at 7:30am.
I hope I will stay overnight if its not too pricey. Good luck on your goals this year!

I wanted to do this last year, but with my son's graduation from high school and my niece's pending return from Iraq it was a scheduling nightmare. I live in Minot so I have to add about 10 hours driving time to the day which means coming down the day before. I used the marathon (actually, the 5K Fun Run) as a goal to keep me active all winter; unfortunately I couldn't work out the logistics of getting to Fargo even though I was "trained" and ready to go. If the event was in Minot I absolutely would have done it.

This year my May looks open, and I hope I will be able to make it down to Fargo for the 5K Fun Run.

I saw an older posting for last year and I wondered who this coming year is getting ready or has this as a goal? Are you running the 5K? Are you doing the half Marathon or even the full marathon??? I am planning on running the half marathon. I am a beginner but I figure the next few months is plenty of time to train and I am excited. I just want to say hi to all of you pros and those who are doing this just like I am as a personal goal you want to reach for you. I am not a professional I just want to do it for me and just to finish would be a blessing. I would have proven to myself I can and that I did it! That is what drives me to this. Does anyone one else want to share or give advice?
