Being new to Las Cruces I don't know a lot of trails. But there is one that we did with a ranger from the BLM that he called Trackways; it is called that because they have some tracks from reptiles that predate the dinosaurs. At the pinacle, you have a beautiful view into the valley with the Rio Grande winding thru. It is over by Picacho Mountain. Maybe you can get some info on it at the BLM office.

Sometimes when it's cold out I think I don't want to go out. But when I do I find that hiking in the quiet of the winter weather is so peaceful and has it's own set of rewards.

I went from Silver City to Las Cruces yesterday to think about hiking, thinking it would be warmer down there. It was actually colder. And I was surprised to see patches of snow still. The snow on the Organ mountains looked pretty though. I went to the new state park down there and went through the bosque paths. It wasn't a very long hike but I had done a step aerobic class in the morning so it turned out okay. When I was just about to return to the visitor center I saw a couple leaving to go out on the trails. Other than the volunteers in the visitor's center there was no one else there. It was really neat and felt like a winter walk. It was peaceful and could hear lots of birds. I don't really know the different sounds of the breeds of birds, but the sound of them was so nice. The only 2 drawbacks was in some places the mud from the melting snow and then the sound of the cannons that go off to scare the birds from the farmer's fields or whatever was kind of annoying in a peaceful place. But all in all I really enjoyed it.

That's too bad that the box was stolen. Some people just have no respect. You're right about the Bonita lake idea. That may have to wait to spring. DOn't know how much snow they've had up there but I bet it's pretty durn cold! Beautiful area though.

We were over at Dripping Springs but the one letterbox we hoped to find was stolen. Next time we will go all the way up and try to get the other 3.
We always run out of time...LOL...and still trying to find that Smokey the Bear box by Bonita Lake....may have to wait for spring now!

The Catwalk is great. My sister and I have done Whitewater from Willow Creek to the Catwalk. Absolutely the prettiest creek I have ever seen.

I also recommend the trail in the new Bosque Park over in Mesilla. Not strenuous but presently there are many birds wintering in the area. I have also heard of a trail used by the locals that ties in with the Bosque. I bet the rangers could point you in the right direction. That trails takes you up into the mesa on the west side of the Rio Grande and follows the valley a bit further south than the Bosque trail.

I'd like to know about the Rabbit Ear Trail also.
The letter-boxing sounds like fun. I'd never heard of that before. I'm in Silver City and Las Cruces is only 2 hours away.

One of my very favorite places around the southwest is the Catwalk at Glenwood. It's and hour from me, and about 3 hours from Las Cruces. The official Catwalk trail is a little over a mile one way, all going up. There is a forest trail that branches off from there so you can actually go much further if you desire. The Whitewater Creek runs through it. There is a picnic area, but no overnight camping there, although there are camp ground not far from there if you want to do overnight. But it can easily be done in a day.

Wow I'm happy to see this thread because I live 2 hours from Las Cruces and am looking for trails to hike during the fall and winter months when Las Cruces is a little warmer than the mountains near Silver City where I like to hike in the summer. Also safer as the forest is full of hunters during our various hunting seasons here.
I have a blog on my hiking adventures at Dripping Springs/La Cuevas trails this past Saturday. I had a great time but there was some adventure I hadn't planned on.

How about Baylor Canyon Trail? It starts on the west side of the Organs, hikes up into a saddle and drops into the Aguirre Springs.

There are some great trails at Aguirre Springs. So far my favorite is Pine Tree Trail.

Glad you had fun and enjoyed the area. There are lots of places to hike in this area. One of the other favorites is Dripping Springs. Beautiful and not a do or die type hike. Great for a morning or afternoon stroll.

Happy Hiking

Letterboxing is where someone hides a journal and a stamp in a box and then posts clues to find it on the Internet. Go to this link to find boxes hidden in your town: www.atlasquest.com You carry a journal and your own trail stamp with you. (I hand-carved my own stamp.) When you find the hidden one you stamp your stamp in their journal and you stamp their stamp in your journal. It's great fun! There are more and more boxes hidden each day. It's very popular up in the Santa Fe area. They even have group events and they plant special boxes for them. Check out Atlas Quest. There are tutorials on there that explain everything you need to know.

Hi Bonnie -
I sparked mailed you the directions for Rabbit Ears Plateau. You might have to adjust the MILES/Total MILES/ DIRECTIONS colums. I think the mail system scrunched them up a bit.

Sounds like a doozie of a hike.

Enjoy!

Hi CJ,

I just sent you a SparkMail with directions for the "A" Mountain Hike. It's only about a mile hike, but it's straight up! LOL

Where is Rabbit Ear Plateau? That sounds interesting!

I also sent you information about Letterboxing...since you're out there anyway! LOL My sisters and I have several boxes planted around Las Cruces and the Organ Mountains. Too bad you didn't know before you went to Aguirre Springs. I have a box planted about a mile and a half up the pine tree loop trail.

Hi Bonnie!

We have hiked some of the trails in the area. We like Pine Tree trail, Filmore Canyon and Dripping Springs alot. Today we hiked Bar Canyon and really enjoyed the hike. Next weekend we are trying Rabbit Ear Plateau.

I have not been to A-Mountain. I need to read up on that one. I also saw Sunset trail too. Curious how long they are.

Thanks again for the tips.

Hi CJ!

Have you hiked in the Dona Anas? My sister and I love to hike out there. There are several marked trails that we've found by accident, but you can also find some maps of some trails from the "Rim Rattlers" website for Mountain Biking. www.lcrimrattlers.org/
Keep in mind, their maps and difficulty ratings are based on riding a mountain bike. There are many more trails in the areas they talk about (like going to the top of A-Mountain).

I'm sure you know to watch for snakes. This time of year it's probably not a problem, but it's best to stay on some kind of trail so they are not camouflaged. Did you see the picture of the one in my SparkPage photo gallery? emoticon emoticon We were hiking in the Dona Anas in September when we encountered that one.

I hope you got some good hiking in this weekend!
