This is an old topic, but I figured its never too late to kick that dead horse.

When I was on Adderall I had wicked anxiety and anger issues. We got up to 20mg 3 times a day in November....That has now become known as "Hell Month". All I did was rage or cry. I hated my wife, I hated my dog, I hated everybody and everything. I was short tempered and prone to fits of anger.

At the next meds check we dialed it back to 15 x3. That was better but I was still chewing the inside of my mouth to shreds. So after the holidays we made the switch to Ritalin. OMG! The difference is like night and day.

My Doctor says that "most of the time" the side effects you have on one you won't have on the other....its a roll of the dice on which will work.

No more hell month! LOL

I don't know if it's a side effect from adderal. I only take it occasionally but I'm also on lexapro. When I don't take my lexapro I can get angry or depressed.

I personally am on Adderall too, 15 mg, and just switch to XR, but I don't really think its working, and I think my dose is too low... but anyhow, I don't really get ANGRY, but about once a week I become over emotional, and I was wondering if it was side effect myself?

You have all given me a lot to think about! I have to get to talk to my doctor. He says that we can call him and page him late in the evenings, so I might do that on Monday. I think I should not wait until January.

Today, I tried going with less Adderall (because it is the weekend and it is not as important that I be very focused.) Today, I have not had any issues with anger, but I ache all over (which has happened on days when I "forget" to take my pills.)

So it is pretty clear that I should not be trying to figure this out without my doctor to help me!

Thanks again, my dear SPARK ADD friends!!!

Judi - you have been given great advice. Since you feel comfortable with your doctor, I believe he will work with you to find the right med. I take Strattera which gives me no anger issues. I also take an anti depressant which makes me feel pretty mellow. My biggest problem is that I seem to get a little sensitive but I sometimes wonder if it is from something other than meds that cause my issue.

Stimulant medicines tend to make me irritated and anxious easily. Ritalin was worse for me than Vyvanse is now. It's been awhile since I've been on Ritalin but it could have been too high of a dose that contributed. With Vyvanse, 50 mg didn't make me feel irritated very often, but I didn't feel like it was working well enough. I'm up to 60 mg now and it helps my ADHD symptoms more, but I get irritated and anxious a lot more often. The only solution my doctor really had was to go back to 50 mg. You could always try a different medication and see if your body reacts differently. Or see if lowering your dose of Adderall reduces your anger while still be effective. I don't think I had irritation/anxiety issues when I was on Strattera, so you could also try a non-stimulant. The problem with them is that they aren't as potent as stimulants and I felt like I became tolerant to it after a couple years (even those I was on the maximum allowable dose). I would imagine you don't have bipolar if your doctor said you would have had problems with being on anti-depressants. There are so many little problems that often go along with ADHD plus the side effects of taking such strong medication. I think it could just be a matter of finding the medicine and dosage that works the best while causing the least negative side effects and using other complimentary treatment methods to deal with or reduce the side effects.

Different medications affect people differently.

My daughter does fine on Concerta now that we have her dosage right but she was literally violent on Vyvance. For a lot of people Vyvance is a great med but for others not.

Adderal is a type of amphetamine. You might ask your doctor if methylphenidate based medication would be a better choice if your side effects do not improve.

Judi, I am bipolar and I was told the add meds might make me manic if I took them. My psychiatrist only mentioned a mini dose. I let the subject lie for a few months but I see him tomorrow and I am going to ask him about it. I don't know if you have any bipolar tendencys or not. But agitation is only one symptom. Do you have trouble sleeping? Do you have racing thoughts? Do you ever feel panic? How sharp are your ups and downs? are you always rational?
I take an antidepressant but I also take a mood stabilizer. I don't think I could function with out it. Yes, I think you should contact your doctor. It may give you more peace of mind..Good Luck.

Actually mine is a really great guy. I just have not actually put this into words yet. Maybe I will leave him a message instead of waiting until January.

Thanks for the pointer. I'll look it up. I like the expression "acting out". That is a good description!

Anyone else have advice? This is great.

Try a different one. Tell your doctor it's making you act out. The side effects include those things. Check webmd. If your doctor balks, then get a doctor that listens better.

The older I get the wider the horizon seems...

Hi Team,
I want to know if anyone has experienced increased anger as a side effect to Adderal (or other ADD meds.)

I have always had an issue with being easily annoyed, and I have been working on this for years. I have made great progress, and in the last few years, I would say that I have toned it down quite a bit. I have learned to be less controlling and more "philosophical" and better at choosing my battles. Everyone in my life agrees.

However, over the last few months, since I started Adderal, I have regressed. I am getting really angry (especially at my poor husband) much more than I have been. I would say that I am justified in most cases, but that doesn't make it the right thing for me or for other people in my life. I like it better when I don't feel this way.

So, at my next visit to check on my medication (early January), I am going to bring it up.

Also, at my psychiatrist, when we were trying to diagnose my ADD several months ago, the topic arose of whether I might have some bipolar mixed in with all of my other issues. I have been on an anti-depressant for about 10 years for "anxiety" but I would describe it more as agitation. Everything bothers me. So when I came in to talk about the idea that it could be ADD, he said that there is some of what could match bipolar in my behavior. But, he said that if I did have bipolar, then I would probably not have tolerated the anti-depressant all these years without a mood stabilizer. So we said, it's probably not bipolar. But my nephew has a really bad case of bipolar. And now, I am getting this "anger" thing from my ADD medication. So that could be something of a manic symptom.

(I have an old t-shirt that says 51% sweetheart, 49% bitch, don't push me. And that really is just the way I am. I think I am a really nice person, but ...)

So, chime in everyone, and tell me your experiences and ideas! Thanks!

Sparkfully Yours, Judi
