After falling and hurting myself last week, I am trying to be more observant of the area I walk. I have always had a tendency to be inattentive. One of the biggest symptoms for me with my ADD is inattention.

I fell UP the stairs in our house and dislocated my finger this week. I am certain that the reason I did this was because of my racing thoughts. I am always zoning out because I have so many thoughts racing through my head. This was another lesson for me to slow down. My ADD really has controlled me for so long. Just another thing to discuss with my therapist on Monday.

I do that too - bouncing from one thing to the next...

But I do think I sometimes have the hyperfocus. If I get involved in an email or a posting, I might not even notice that a half hour has gone by and then I end up being late for something!

And right now, I just came down to check my email and say hi to DH, but the thing I walked away from upstairs was a search for some papers that I cannot find!!!! I hate when that happens. So I am looking through piles and piles and finding all kinds of other things... (And it is a time of day when my medication is all worn off!)

Part of the whole ADD/ADHD thing is having tons of books on organization and not knowing in the least how to use the information. We are supposed to have something great called hyperfocus, but darned if I can ever find mine! I can be in the middle of cleaning the bathroom and a noise will draw me away. Hours later I'll remember that I didn't finish cleaning the bathroom.

I'm really liking the book
SHED Your Stuff, Change Your Life: A Four-Step Guide to Getting Unstuck
because it is trying to get me to think about a "theme" for this upcoming phase of my life. I like the idea of building decisions around a theme. I don't have it figured out yet! But I like the idea of trying to do it!

Thanks Judy,
I have a few of the organizational books already, but the thing I've found that's helpful has been an audio book from the library that I downloaded online called "Get Organized the Clear and Simple Way" by Marla Dee. It breaks it all down into sections and seems to be working in some ways. I'll have to find ways to make some of the steps fit my style of cleaning, but I think it will work in the end. Thanks for the suggestions.
Hugs, Susan

Susan,
I am reading a book (actually two books) that was suggested to me by someone on one of my other teams. It is about clearing out the clutter, but it is a really different way of looking at it. So far, I am feeling like I'm onto something important!

The books are
SHED Your Stuff, Change Your Life: A Four-Step Guide to Getting Unstuck (Paperback)
~ Julie Morgenstern (Author)
and
Organizing from the Inside Out, second edition: The Foolproof System For Organizing Your Home, Your Office and Your Life (Paperback)
~ Julie Morgenstern (Author)

and I bought both of them used.

Wellbutrin is also one of the only types of medication that is initially used for both depression and ADHD that does not cause weight gain. It may be one of the medications they start you on to determine if it is ADHD.
On the home front, I am having trouble keeping to task on cleaning around the house. Getting it done will be the only solution for future cleaning to become easier. I need to get rid of the STUFF in order to see what works in the rooms. Hope you're all having a good and productive day.
Love and hugs, Susan

Yes, Wellbutrin is the preferred anti-depressant for AD/HD. I know that none of the SRIs (serotonin reeuptake inhibiters) ever worked for me. It was a Godsend when the doctor suggested Wellbutrin!

Wellbutrin is an atypical antidepressant and smoking cessation aid. It acts as a norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor (NDRI), & has been found to be effective for adult ADHD.

If your doctor isn't listening to you about your ADHD, I would suggest finding a doctor who does understand the condition. If your provider is part of a group, find out if there is anyone in the psychiatric unit who works with ADHD. If you are seeing a therapist, that person should know which doctors are working with ADHD. And also if you have a formal diagnosis, you should give that to the doctor, so s/he doesn't think you're just diagnosing yourself.

Good luck! Let us know what happens.

I am very lucky to have the doctor that I have. He is very willing to let me in on the whole discussion of what is good for me.

I have heard that wellbutrin is actually one antidepressant that can help with ADHD. Has anyone else heard that?

Also, ADHD is a really hard thing to diagnose in some cases because some of the symptoms can be confused with certain types of depression, anxiety, OCD, and even bipolar. So your doctor might want to try something less aggressive (like an antidepressant) before trying a stimulant.

The other thing I would say is that you can get some of the self testing surveys (from online or in a book) and if you have some concrete results to show, your doctor might be more willing to listen.

I am having problems getting my Dr. to prescribe me the meds I need. I was on Ritalin when I was younger, but that Dr. is no longer in practice and my records have been destroyed. My current Dr. keeps wanting to give me Wellbutrin, an anti depressant. I am not depressed, I just can't concentrate. Any advice on getting the Dr. to see eye to eye with me?

Today I did the doctor thing for my annual physical and my BP was astoundingly great! It's actually better than it was before I started meds for ADHD.

I'm still taking the 2 meds for my BP that I've been on for 27 years but I guess they are doing the trick.

I actually think that now that I'm less stressed because I've been able to become more organized, that my BP has been assisted by the Concerta (well, in a round about way).

Whatever, all is good. Now I just have to remember to go for all the scopes, ultrasounds, and mammograms on the right days. *shuffling sound of papers* "Where's that day planner??"

Have a great evening everyone!

I am on a high dose of adderall, but find that if I didn't have it this high I would never get anything done. You sometimes have to make the call when it comes to what works for you and if it is worth the side effects.

Thanks everyone for sharing about your experiences with Adderall. I'm not on BP medicine, & really hoped not to have to be either. Now I am worried that any ADD med I take will produce HBP, unless I do get on meds of some kind. I have been taking stuff from the health food store to keep it down -- maybe I should experiment with taking that faithfully & monitoring my BP as I do. I had a monitor, but it was defective. Maybe I'll get a wrist cuff & then try the Adderall again.

My doc was a bit concerned about my BP going up with my meds (72mg of Concerta, yes, a high dose) but it doesn't seem to have really changed at all since I've gone on it. Mind you, I was already taking 2 meds for my BP. I've taken stuff for BP since I was only 27 which I guess means I've now taken BP meds as long as I haven't been taking BP meds! LOL

Well, I stayed at school LATE tonight since I had to leave detailed plans for the supply (substitute) teacher who will be there for me on Monday. We get particularly poor supply teachers so I hate to be away since it means I have to teach twice as much when I get back to undo what the supply has incorrectly taught!!

While staying late and leaving 'foolproof' plans/work for the supply teacher and then staying even later to prepare my own plans for when I return on Tuesday, I FORGOT about a friend's party that I was supposed to have attended.
emoticon !!!!!
*sighs* Some days I wonder where my head is because it is surely NOT attached to my shoulders.

The good news? I do have plans prepared for both Monday and Tuesday. Do I still have a friend? I'll get back to you on that one.
emoticon
Oh, and when I left the school and got into my car to leave I realized I had left my purse behind in my classroom. Since I did have my car keys in my pocket I was in my car and driving off before I realized I was missing my purse. Luckily for me, the custodian answered the doorbell when I rang it when I went back. Yes, it was that late.

Other teachers tell me I'm the most organized person they know but they don't know how long it takes me to get there.

A few teachers have seen me in 'action' getting myself prepared and have said, "WHAT in Earth are you DOING???" I guess I must be quite a wonder!

Then they'll show me a quick 1,2,3, zippedy do dah way to do something (the whole time looking at me with disbelief like I have 3 eyes and horns sprouting from my head). Of course, I'm not able to remember the process to do it a second time.
*sigh* emoticon
This all happens while I've been taking Concerta. Yes, this is even WITH taking Concerta. The truth is, Concerta really has made it seem like I've pushed that magic 'Easy' button. Everything was that much worse before.......

I also keep my keys in a little pouch on the outside of my purse!

My doctor was also concerned about blood pressure. I am actually already on a bp medication. So we are watching it closely. I have a wrist cuff at home, so for the first two weeks, I took it a couple of times a day. It was good, I am happy to say. I am seeing the doctor again on Wednesday, so I think I should take it again for the next couple of days. Thanks for reminding me!

I am dealing with the high blood pressure of taking adderall, but it isn't too bad. My dose increase was done in stages and I think that has a lot to do with my pressure not going through the roof. I put my house keys in the same place each day so I don't lose them. I always seem to lose other things and don't find them until I stop looking for them. lol
Now I'm listening to an audio book on organization and taking notes. Hoping that I will be able to make the changes needed while I don't have a lot of stuff to go through. Hope you all are doing well.
Hugs, Susan

I SO relate to the running around looking for your keys! I have devoted YEARS of my life to that activity! I got a carabiner & clipped my house keys to my purse. Then I started putting the car keys in the same place every day. That worked well, but I got a new purse which has a handy little pouch on the outside that my car keys just fit into! Haven't had to hunt for my keys in months! That's progress!

Judi, be sure your doctor monitors your BP regularly! Adderall has an HBP side effect profile & mine went through the roof while I was taking it. And now I'm having trouble keeping it within normal range even though I'm not on any ADD mes at all at the moment (& consequently almost as crazy as ever -- oh look! a chicken!.) emoticon

I am doing better since I started my medication. I seem to be doing less "darting about" which is my usual style. It seems like I was always in the middle of five things, and it was a very distracting feeling, and that is where I would lose things or forget things. But now, I am a little better. I have more confidence that I will get to the next thing so I don't pounce on it while I am still in the middle of the previous thing. (It is not quite a "miracle" and I am not "all better" but I do feel a difference!)

I understand procrastination. I find myself doing that a lot. However, inattention seems to be a bigger issue for me. I never remember where I put things. I have found that I am putting my keys in my purse after I use them. I have tackled that problem. I had been running around for years looking for my keys. Another big issue for me is definitely staying on task.

I don't think I've gone quite that far.
In my coping skills group we have just gone from learning about self esteem to procrastination. I am bad about procrastinating when it comes to doing the things that are good for me. I put them off all the time. The first day was about social procrastination, putting off things that you do for others. I don't have that problem. But the next session is about the personal side (which I need to deal with).

Hi, I have been suffering from a cold and haven't been around as much for a few days. Next week I go back to the therapist to discuss all of my issues (ADD, depression, etc.) - I see so much of myself in my youngest daughter. She was picking up our mail while we were out of town. She couldn't remember where she put it. My DH was fixing her car and opened her trunk. Guess what! He found our mail in her trunk. She couldn't remember ever putting it there!! UGH Poor kid!

Hi Everyone,
I just thought I would say hello. I have not been here to check in for a little while.

I started on adderall, and it was great at first, then I got up to the higher dose, and I felt strange, so I went back down. I was still having problems, so we tried breaking it into fourths and taking it every hour or two, and even though it was a pain, I felt better. So now I am taking time release adderall. So far so good...

I wish you luck with the upstairs cleaning and the puppy with the muddy paws. You'd think that someone would come up with a way to deal with the problem. Maybe you will think of one yourself and make a fortune! LOL

Today I walked on the beach and went shopping. I did a bit of decluttering but not as much as I should have. Will continue to work on that on Tuesday.

I'm on my spring break this week so I'm feeling like I'm over the moon! I stayed up very late last night (bad girl) so I didn't jump up out of bed this morning. I guess I'm allowed to do that on my break, right?

I cleaned most of my downstairs living area today. Not the whole area but most of it. I even vacuumed all of it but I haven't washed the floors yet.

That seemed pointless since I have one little dog with a case of the 'runs' today and every time he comes back in his paws are muddy, muddy, muddy. I do the best I can to clean them up but...... it is springtime and there is mud everywhere outside. In a few weeks the spring thaw will just be a bad memory.

Tomorrow? The upstairs will be conquered! Well, at least that is my plan.

I found the best exercise for me that is fun, Rollerskating too bad I don't have skates and the rink isn't always open otherwise going to the rollerdome would be a good option.

I am trying to find ways to get my exercise without going someplace that will cost me something. It is taking some research to find a variety of places to go that will at least keep me walking to get the exercise I need.

This week has been rather lazy. I enjoy that. Tomorrow I plan to look for prescription sunglasses, hope they don't cost too much. Making plans to do small tasks this week. I have been getting a lot of exercise which is a good thing.

The "powers that be" within Spark People are working on the mail problem.
Today is again my day for group therapy and will probably be the last day of Self Esteem work. I wonder where this will all lead in the end. But I also have to meet with my case manager while I am there.
So rainy here and hoping it clears out later in the day so I don't have to be all bundled up. I'll try and catch up here later on.
Hugs, Susan

I haven't had that problem with sparkmail.

Tonight I need to organize some things around the house, getting my papers packed up for the morning and write a list of things to do tomorrow, and I am so sad that my brain has run out of this beautiful medicine! I suppose I could just get up early and do it all "on drugs". That's actually not a bad idea!

Hi Everyone. I am reporting in after my fifth day on Adderall! I start my full dose tomorrow. So far it has been 5 mg when I wake up and 5 mg a few hours later. Tomorrow it will be 10 and 10.

I am feeling so much better. It is a true change! I hope to have continued good reports!
