It was hard..I would get horrible caffeine headaches. Now it really doesn't bother me not to drink. I do get bored with water so I have using crystal light to make it a little better. Also iced tea with just lemon.

My husband had gastric bypass surgery about 5 years ago. After his surgery, he found he could no longer tolerate pop. I stopped drinking pop about a month after his surgery and haven't turned back. He, on the other hand, started drinking pop about 6 months out from surgery.

About three years ago I decided to cut back on my caffeine intake...so I gave up pop. I had been a several-can-a-day regular pop drinker, and just stopped cold turkey. But then finals week rolled around and I had to pull several all-nighters, so I needed the caffeine energy.

But when I started drinking pop again, the regular was too syrupy, so I switched to diet. Then about three weeks ago, I just quit drinking pop. Cold turkey. All I drink is water, and one coffee a day. I don't miss it...

I actually don't mind water, and been wanting to kick out soda for a while, so I figured I would start cold turkey with my eating right. Since the beginning of the year, I actually had one can, compared to 2-3 a day, and it did taste terrible. I thought it was because it was caffiene free, but maybe after reading some comments it is really the fact it does taste terrible. I have bought lemon to add to my water, and the occassional flavored water. I find the packets too sweet.

It took four years to totally kick the soda habit. It's like a drug! I started by drinking less each day, then skipping a day and so on. I substituted water for my soda fix. Now, 4 years later, all I drink is water and coffee. (Gotta have my vitamin C!) Keep on trying, it takes a while!

I still haven't kicked the habit but I am down to 8 ounces a day. My husband laughs every time I get a measuring cup out to pour the soda. Oh well, I will keep trying.

I drink a lot of diet green tea with citrus and diet white tea with raspberry. This tea is very good tasting and has no calories, Lipton is the maker. I like to drink a bottle of this around lunch and dinner, just to help break up drinking water.

trying to quit diet soda myself. i had not heard the theory about diet soda lowering threshold for sweets overall until this site. that probably can account for a lot of the reason i am still struggling with my weight. i am going to try some suggestions from this thread - thanks for the great advice!

I like to mix fruit juice (cranberry, apple, orange etc) with 1/2 glass of carbonated water/seltzer. so you still get that carbonation! just be careful not to overdo it on the juice, you can rack up a lot of calories that way, but as long as you are buying real juices not sugar-laden stuff, it's a healthier drink.

I also do the same thing with wine, cut the amount of wine in half and sub in some sparkly water :)

And for the caffeine withdrawals, well, I switched to 2 cup coffee AM, 1 cup PM (no caffeine after 6p), then replaced that after a little while with black tea (no sugar no cream), and then replaced that with green tea (1 dollop of honey). Hope this helps! emoticon

the sugars in the pop, make you crave even more sugars,... it's vicious cycle, the best way to not crave,... it is too flush out your system by drinking alot of water, once your body regulates how much natrual sugars are in your body for a healthy balance,... you will not crave pop anymore,... I used to drink like 10 cans a day and now I'm lucking if I drink 1 can a week,... usually like gingerale,.... not my usual favorites like MT. DEW & PEPSI,... I stay away from those all together.

I had many other symptoms too UR. Pepsi actually affected me the worst. I stopped drinking it cold turkey. I know it's more difficult for others, but that's what I needed to do. Every once in a while I'll have a sprite or a sierra mist (which I usually don't drink the whole can), but I stay away from the caffeine sodas.

I used to have a Mt. Dew habit, small but enough for the caffeine to be causing me other symptoms.

I would get headaches if I didn't have my morning Dew.

It took a few days of not being happy, but I basically quit cold turkey.
Who is in control: me or the pop?

Since artificial sweeteners give me headaches, I just stick with water and my morning rice "milk". I don't even find that the occasional dose of Coca-Cola helps my sleepiness, so it's not that difficult for me to just walk away from it.

I kicked it cold turkey too. I started it on a Friday so that I would have a whole weekend ahead of me since we don't keep soda in the house. I just kept water or diet ice tea or diet green tea on me at all times. It's about 5 calories per 8 oz and I rather have those 5 calories and get my 8 glasses a day than 0 calories with water and not drink even 2 glasses. That's just me, I can't enjoy water unless it's ice cold, as soon as it gets a little warm I don't want it. I also keep 2 gallon jugs in my fridge always filled with filtered water (thanks Pur!) and ice tea.

I been soda free for 3 weeks already. All I been drinking is water and if drink any types of juices I dilute with water. You know like a flavored water type of drink and it's been good so far and knocked 4 lbs off since then. In the past when I stopped drinking soda my body was overdrawing from the caffeine which cause my stomach to be shakey all the time. I am glad I don't have to deal with that again because I am soda-free...lol Yeah!!

This is me too. I'm a real Pepsi freak. I can wake up with it and go to bed with it too. If I try to quit cold turkey I get really bad headaches. I'm giving it up in baby steps. Last week was every other day and this week is every two days and so on till the 12 pack I bought last week is gone and I'll hopefully be off of the Pepsi, without the headaches. Here is the best for all of us giving up the nasty caffeine.

I met with a nutritional specialist as I would need surgery to have my stomach removed. I suffer from several disease, lupus, fibromylgia, RA, OA and my stomach was bleeding and destroyed from the drugs. In prep for the surgery I was told nothing carbonated ever again from that moment on. It was really rough to stop as I was doing 5-6 diet sodas a day. That was Feb 5, 2005. I still crave a soda once in a while. If I do drink one ( I had 2 sips just once) the pain is so bad you don't enjoy it. My new stomach is a small pouch located under my sternum (breast bone) and most of my small bowel was removed. I am able to live a pretty good life. Except for food! and soda!! So far I have beat the odds. But only by the Grace of God. emoticon

I was a real popaholic...it took awhile but I haven't had any for 2 months so I'm still battling my addiction. My face started to break out badly and my Doc said it was pop. I'm in my 40's so I knew it was a reason for the breakouts...I'm now on water with lemon and occasional unsweetened iced tea...You can do it, anyone can if I did.

I drink water, but don't necessarily like it either. I usually have to add a little lemon or something to my water to give it a little flavor.

Instead of soda I started drinking the carbonated flavored water, most of them are sugar free & have no calories. So I still get my water, but it feels like I'm drinking a soda.

When I do drink soda I always drink diet. My husband was drinking 3-5 cans of soda a day. I started buying the flavored carbonated water & he tends to drink that instead of all the soda now.

Walmart has some good ones. They sell them in the 32 oz bottles or you can buy a 4 pack of 20 oz ones for $1.89 I think.

I can do it, I can do it, I can do it....

For me, I had to develop a taste for water. I used to hate it. I prefered Crystal light or unsweetened tea to just plain water any day. The thing that really made me loose my taste for soda was going off sugar for 1 week. Yes, it sucked. But, it really lowered my threshold for sweets. When I tried a little soda later it tasted too sweet. The experiment also gave me an appreciation for dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate. I was really surprised at how much my tastes change.

Think of it this way, when you have a drink of soda it tastes sweet. But if you eat a candy bar and then immediately drink some soda it doesn't really taste sweet. It's just neutral. Your threshold for sweetness was momentarily increased because of the candy.

There is now some research that says tat drinking diet drinks with arificial sweetners can make you gain wait because your threshold for sweetness is increased and thus you crave sweeter foods overall. So, perhaps it is best just to do away with the sodas, diet and all. I quit cold turkey but if that seems too challanging than you might try switching to milk which at least has some nutritional value.

I haven't had a soda in 4-5 years, not even a diet one, and I honestly don't miss it. I also save a lot of money by just ordering water at restaurants. You will get used to it and probably won't even miss soda eventuially. That may seem hard to imagine but it is possible.

I kicked the soda habit 7 years ago and it was the best thing I have ever done. I feel much better when I drink water or tea and soda made me really hungry for come reason. Anyway, there are so many drinks that are healthier than soda and taste alot better and don't give you the burping effect.

It gets easier everyday taht you don't drink soda. If I try to drink it now ... I would probably get sick. And that helps me stay away too... Try it... You'll see.

It was really hard for me to give up diet soda cold turkey and I admire anyone who can. I substituted Turkey Hill diet green tea for the diet soda. I also had to come to grips with my addictive personality and realize I can NEVER have another soda again. So then, I had this green tea addiction. Well, I had help with that. We went to the midwest for a week over the summer. Far away from Turkey Hill products and I didn't even miss it! I have a water cooler here at home and I just love drinking the spring water we get for it. Also I drink lots of decaf hot tea. (yea, antioxidents!)I've been totally decaf since July, and I feel great! My skin and hair look so much better now!

I was a full-on Mountain Dew-aholic. Like 4-6 12 oz. cans per day. I switched to diet which at first I thought tasted like crap but I really didn't want to drink my calories. I then just quit cold turkey, and got the headaches, dizziness, irritability which lasted about a week. That was about a year ago. Now I will on a rare occasion have a soda, but mostly opt for water. I'm not much of a plain water drinker. I usually keep a stash of crystal light packets. By the way, the wild strawberry crystal light has some caffeine. You might want to give it a try.

Think highly of yourself because the world takes you at your estimate.

I kicked my soda habit (and my coke slurpee/slushee habit) just in the past year.

Let me start by saying that I have always been a soda junkie. I used to drink coke most of the time, and sprite with breakfast. I mean it was absolutely awful. I quit sodas once when I was pregnant, and had one the very day I delivered (in the hospital). I went from regular sodas to diet in an attempt to reduce calories, but it didn't seem to make a difference in health or weight.

I didn't like water -- thought it was boring and wasn't interested in drinking anything that wasn't carbonated.

So when I got really serious about losing weight, I figured this was a sure place where I needed some work.

First - I stopped buying soda at the grocery store. If it wasn't in the house, I had to drink something else.

Next - I got a few nice reusable water bottles. I have three - one for the house, one for my desk at work, and one for the car. I'm more likely to drink water if it's convenient, and these help. I didn't add anything to the water, because shifting my focus to replacements hadn't helped in the past.

Finally - After the first two got me to slow down and reduce my consumption, I was still getting sodas when I went out to eat, or getting a slurpee as a "reward" or to satisfy a craving. That's when I went cold turkey. After three weeks with no soda, I found that I could walk into Wawa without having my eyes immediately check the slushee machine to see if it was in defrost cycle.

It's now been over three months since I last had a soda. When I first went cold turkey, I was considering having a slurpee on my birthday (next week), but have since decided I'm going to skip it. I think having them helps reinforce the cravings for more, and I just need to avoid them altogether.

Incidentally, I've also dropped two sizes in the past three months since I quit sodas. I've also been working out and eating healthy, so it's not the only reason, but it's another point to help reinforce staying away from them for me.

Renee11S: I, too, suffered with the caffeine migraines when I went off sodas. The second day was the absolute worst, but after that they began to taper off in intensity and frequency, and were completely gone within a week and a half, two weeks. What helped me was drinking lots and lots of water to flush my system, and Excedrin. Hang in there, you can get off the caffeine and overcome the discomfort. It'll be over before soon enough.

Quitting soda was last year's resolution and I did it. Just stopped cold-turkey. What made me stop drinking it was I read diet sodas contain formaldehyde. Who wants that in your body??? It contains just too many chemicals and regular soda is too high in calories. Why drink your calories when you can enjoy them in a solid form? I drink water, sometimes with Crystal lite and I drink tea once in a while.

For me, I never was a big pop drinker. I would have maybe one a week, but I am a big coffee drinker. I always drink that black so no added calories. Since my initial surgery I drank decaf or halfcafe for the first 2 months, then I was allowed regular coffee....all because I don't put anything in it. With those powders you can put in water, I have to be very careful as I can't tolerate ANYTHING artificial since surgery and they are all sweetened with either sucralose or aspartame.

After a chem screen revealed elevated glucose levels, my physician advised I skip the pop and all. If you read the labels, many of these drinks contain high fructose corn syrup. These along with the sodas eliminated from your diet will help in the long run. Try fresh brewed teas. I drink alot of mineral waters from Europe and find them to be satisfying yet no calories or other features.

I quit buying soda when I went to the grocery store. We dont have it in our house any more. Its poor value for the money because it doesnt have nutrients. I drink my wonderful well water. But when I want something special I fill about 1/4 of the glass with juice for a spritzer.

I found I lost water weight when I quit drinking soda because it has a lot of salt in it. Also, I want to remind the young man who switched to iced tea that he might want to think about caffeine. I'm a caffeine junky. (grin)

I stopped cold-turkey. Stopped drinking Coke, coffee (I loaded it with sugar), Brisk because of all the empty calories. Switched to water with a dash of ReaLemon, then eventually got tired of adding that and just went with plain water. For the gym, I take bottles of Propel. The only times I've gone back were those special nights where I just had to have a Captain and Coke, and I always tried to get Coke Zero for that. Those were a rarity.

Anyone else go cold-turkey?

I'll have to jump in here and agree that the easier way to do it is by replacing 1 soda per day with water and then eventually replace them all. Another thing I did was track my iced tea. i hate tracking so it helped b/c I didn't want to have to put it in. I also keep a pitcher of water in the fridge. It became a habit to reach for it instead of anything else. the longer I have been on SP, the more good habits I develop- like no longer buying soda at all. I still make iced tea for the family but would eventually like them to do just water, too. Other than a very occasional cup of coffee (once a month maybe)or when I'm at a picnic and don't bring enough of my own water, I have only had water since June. And if you can find the tips that work for you, I can promise you won't miss the other drinks after a while. Keep workin' on it. I know you can do it. If I can figure out how to repost a blog, I have a breakdown of how much weight you can lose just by replacing sugary /bad drinks with water. soda is something like 15 pounds in a year if you replace at least one glass per day with water. good luck!

Win the battle today!

I want to know if anyone has had the withdrawal headaches that come with kicking the habit. I am a nursing assistant that works the night shift and I am addicted to Mountain Dew and would love to kick the habit completely but am scared to death of the caffeine headaches. I think that the worst time is between 3-5am when there is nothing to do at work and it is so quiet.

I would love some advice!!

I use to drink 2-3 soda's a day. I always had bad acid reflux, sleep apnia and so on and so forth... always felt crappy.

On September 26th of this year I just up and stopped drinking soda period. Went to pure water only. Started 2-3 glasses a day... then added one more... then eventually can drink up to 6 glasses a day.

One thing that i found that by doing this... you find out that when you think you are hungry you are really thirsty... so that helped me majorly with my weight loss thus far.

But the bigger plus, I am no longer feeling sick all the time... sleep better and have a better attitude.

You will find after stopping drinking soda's for a period of time... if you even try drinking a sip of one maybe 2 weeks after not having one... they actually taste like crap. lol

SP 2008-2011 I lost 90 LBS!!

After 2 back surgeries...
I am back and ready to re-loose this weight again!

I've been cutting it out slowly. I went to one glass a day, then to a glass every other day and so on. It's been working so far

How about just try drinking some bottled water. There are those bottle drink mix packets you can add or if you have to have the carbonation there are some flavored waters. Diet soda and carbonation in excess can be damaging to your intestinal lining causing reflux, ulcers and actually can lead to stomach cancer. What is excess? If you drink 4 or more a day.

It depends on what kind of iced tea your drinking, I love Turkey Hill Diet Green Tea, there are no carbs, no calories and it has antioxidants which are good for you. Some iced teas can have calories and carbs, it all depends on what kind of sweetener is in it too. Check out the labels.
