becky,
marleigh does the same thing when she teeths !!! i had never heard of having diarrhea and severe diaper rash with teething until marleigh. she did the same way when she had antibiotics and had to have a prescription ointment. now we put the maximum strength desiten on her and it always helps. wow cooked flour !!!! tell me how you cook it so if we need it for the next tooth !!!! i hope i don't get the poop glue/paste.......lol !!! that kind of diaper rash is terrible and you know it has to be so bad for them to have teething pain and the diaper rash pain too. does you dd have a natural teething relief too ???

marleigh came today and poor baby is sick again. she got rsv a few weeks ago and she sounded like it was back. she has some breathing treatments left from her er visit and they are using those. she was a preemie and since she finally got rsv she will be easy to get it over and over. the scary thing is it can progress fast into pneumonia so they have to watch her and give the breathing treatment every 4 hours. she was 32 weeks, 5 days and was turned down for the rsv shots because of the 5 days. the shots are $1,000 and you have to have one monthly from oct. to may so they deny as many as they can. that's really too bad because a baby in icu on a ventilator for 2 weeks is over $200,000 and you would think insurances would rather pay the $8,000 !! prayerfully she will get well and not end up there!!

great job with the pedometer!! i don't have marleigh very much like you do your babies but when i have her i guess i do get a good work out walking and lifting !!! i wonder how many calories we burn lifting and changing diapers..........lol ??? marleigh is 26 pounds so it's like lifting kirby...... he's 25 pounds.

i hope you have a restful night and a teething free day tomorrow !!!!

Funny how topics mutate or evolve ... LOL!!

Teething! OMG Have I dealt with teething this week! Acid stomach causing unbelievable diaper rash!! Feeling like a GM who neglected the little one... but the fact be known... I've never changed so many diapers on one little butt!!

This morning DD gave me a "Pioneer" treatment for the diaper rash of cooked flour!!! HMM... I haven't been a mother to infants since the 60's & 70's and I've seen every "Natural" remedy thought of since raising them in the Hippy Era, and I've never heard of this one ... but this one worked!! One Warning: Too much flour+poop=GLUE OR PASTE!! LOL!! This has been quite a day!! The rash is better and the diarrhea is better and the tooth's bump is feeling more pronounced!! Problem: Once this one cuts through... I have 19 more to deal with!!!! I'm not sure I'm up to it!!

I wore my pedometer today and walked over 2 miles from the living room to the first bedroom ... and I didn't get the pedometer on when the day began!! I guess there is something good coming out of all this pain!! LOL!!

I have a screwdriver and dinner dishes are done. I'm going to go and put my feet up and relax!

it makes you feel so bad when you can't stop the pain. i give her the frozen teethers but i wish there was something better. i did come across someone mentioned there is a oragel natural out now that uses clove oil. i wonder if it is safe. the benzocane had been around forever before it was found to cause that condition. i hope your little ones get through it without driving you insane !!!

I ask because I use teething gel! I have gum recission, and it's terribly painful sometimes. I use the gel so I can sleep. ....

Good research! Teething is a really terrible time. I have decided to approach it like child birth... you give birth... the pain is terrible... you swear you will NEVER go though this again ... and lo and behold you get pregnant AGAIN!! That is what I've discovered in dealing with teething again!! !#@$q@# It is terrible!!

hi y'all !!

becky,
thanks for the potty info. marleigh just turned 17 months on the 2nd and i was wondering when the pottying starts. i sent the princess potty i bought for Christmas home with her so i need to buy anoither one for here. great idea with the stickers!!!! i hope her mom starts the pottying soon.......... since i buy all her diapers and wipes it will free up more money to buy her other things......... like dresses!!! i love to take her shopping and buy her cute dresses !!!!

i hope you'll have time to check in every week !!! i've really missed you and i'm so glad you're back !!

lyn,
i'm so glad to see you posting with us again. i hope when you read your e-mails you'll pop in and say hello and let us know how you and the furbabies are doing.
lol...... that's a great way of putting it......... post what i've shoved in my face. i think we all feel that way sometimes. the nutrition tracker is a great tool and it really helps to see what we "shoved in" and learn how to make it better. i remember when i first joined being shocked at how many calories i really put in. now i rarely go over my calories. just make "a streak" of it to see how many days you can get on sparks and fill in all tracking and make a westie post. you'll even get points for your streak and you'll feel great you're doing it.

collette,
i don't know how you do it all !!! the babysitting of 3 has to be hard to do.....and all the running around on top of that has to be insane. i know i couldn't handle it !!! when is the usual age to start pottying??? do you have a climber and if so what do you do to stop them from climbing everything in sight. marleigh even put a can in the floor and tried to stand on it........ lol. she's determined to get off the floor someway!!!

cat,
marleigh's other grandmother had her mom and thought she couldn't have more and got pregnant again 16 years later and then three years later had another baby. marleigh loves being there and playing with them. she and the two year old are best buddies but the 5 year old swears he hates her....lol. she learns all the boy stuff from them and how to take up for herself.
here's the info on the teething gels:

teething gels contain benzocaine and can cause a life threatning condition in which oxygen is reduced in the bloodstream. The products are used to treat pain caused by teething, canker sores, and irritation of the mouth and gums.

The FDA says methemoglobinemia has been reported with all strengths of benzocaine gels and liquids, including concentrations as low as 7.5%. The federal agency says most cases occur in children aged 2 or younger who were treated with a gel for teething discomfort.

The FDA says people who develop the condition may become pale or gray, become short of breath, feel fatigued, confused, and lightheaded. It also may cause a rapid heart rate.

Signs and symptoms of a reaction to benzocaine usually appear within minutes to hours of using it. The FDA says adults should seek immediate medical attention if symptoms show up after using benzocaine.

The FDA says benzocaine products should not be given to children younger than age 2 unless under the supervision of a health care professional. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends giving children with teething problems a teething ring that has been chilled in a refrigerator, or gently rubbing the childís gums with a finger.

Adults who use benzocaine gels or liquids in the mouth should follow recommendations on the label of the product, which should be stored where it canít be reached by children, the FDA says.

However, the FDA says labels of marketed benzocaine products do not, as of yet, contain warnings about the risks of methemoglobinemia.

The FDA offers these tips for parents:

If benzocaine products are used, watch carefully for signs and symptoms of methemoglobinemia, including pale, gray, or blue-colored skin, lips, and nail beds. Also, shortness of breath, fatigue, confusion, headache, lightheadedness, and rapid heart rate are symptoms of a reaction. If any symptoms occur, seek medical attention immediately.
Keep in mind that problems caused by benzocaine can show up after a single administration of the product.
Use benzocaine gels and liquids sparingly, and only when needed, and not more than four times a day.

i think that's also what is in the toothache gels and other topical pain relief medications.

that is so funny macduff thinks you don't know about the walker..lol !! didn't it make you feel good when he wanted you to join them??? i totally agree with your walker, our westies do have people tendancies. kirby tends to be like an elephant and never forgets when someone has hurt him. he still holds a grudge against a friend of my son who hurt him when he was a puppy. he still growled at him 2 years ago when he visited. i always watch kirby and marleigh when they are together, especially since she fell on him. they are suppose to come tomorrow and i'm hoping for a fun playtime.

Hi, everyone!

Debra - Marlleigh really is a lucky little girl to have so many family members all there for her. Whata lucky girl! Her uncles are ... 2 and 5?? Wow. What's wrong with baby teething gels?? How funny that Kirby was so jealous. I got home early today and MacDuff and the dog walker he doesn't think I know about were walking down the street. I watched him for a moment, and then he saw me. He planted his feet and refused to budge until I crossed the road and joined them. Lisa (the walker) and I chatted as she finished the walk. She's a mother but still agres witht he dog parent feeling that dogs have such personalities and quirks that they are "people" too. They can be socialised, traumatised, etc. MacDuff has always been around people, and having Kadusha helped, too. He's very friendly, but now, as a senior citizen, he, like cranky grandpas the world over, has only limited tolerance to childish antics. So I have to keep an eye on him.

Lyn - I understand the fatigue. I can't seem to get it together.

Becky - I'm actually a little jealous that it's cold there. It's still so unseasonably warm here that I contnue to battle my summer allergies! emoticon

Thank you for all your warm "Hello's"! This is such a great group. Most of us are all in the same boat... lost energy! LOL!!

BUSYMOM911 - Wow I have nothing to complain about! You are running hither and yon... and at least I have DH here to step in and help with things ... that is everything except changing diapers or wiping butts... that seems to be his off limits, but I don't care. At least he helps. When we have other GKs to pick up he does the running around.
emoticon
CATIATM - emoticon Hugs back @ ya! Missed you too!

MAMABEARLICIOUS - Wow! Always a lot of things going on in your life too! Never a dull moment! About potty training... lots of trips to the bathroom to sit. At first every 30 minutes I would say, "Potty break!" We would trot ourselves in and sit. I wouldn't sit her in there too long, but when I heard the 'tinkle' sound there was lots of "Hurrah Hadleigh!" to make her proud. Stickers for just sitting on the potty at first and then stickers for going potty. We used pull-ups instead of diapers and now she's in 'cute big girl panties'! There have been accidents at nap time so we put pull-ups on at nap. Lately we have been successfully dry! Yippee!!

The vet said the cyst could have been taken off with just a local, but since he was going down for the dental cleaning it was a good time to take care of it.
emoticon
Good luck!
emoticon
CALICOLYN - Thanks for the encouragement! I think Buddy and I will try that hill again very soon. Right now it is freezing outside... not feeling like bundling up! But now that I think of it... my excuse during the summer was that it was too hot!! Wish I could make up my mind!! LOL!!
emoticon
OK. I hear the little one screaming. She's been on the floor and pretty happy... but getting bored!

Take Care everyone! Think of me often... as I will you!

Hi Becky, (& all)

Just to say thank you...I had been thinking along the same lines. I found that by the time I got to the computer in the evening all I wanted to do was check my email and shut it down again. I don't have little ones to care for, a much more difficult job, but I come home from work, take care of the animals (my joy) get supper, feed Mike (my boyfriend), clean up because I HATE a messy kitchen, watch a little tv, chase Mike out, walk Sadie get ready for bed and read a few minutes before I fall asleep.

Somewhere in there I check email. if I see something from Sparks I check it out but that's usually it. I do miss the camaraderie of the people/friends on the site but that's my fault.

S sssoooo...I will promise to get here at least once a day to say "HI" & check on friends & post what I have shoved in my face.

Thank you Becky, for your inspiration & I hope to see you & Buddy tackling the "Killer Hill" very soon...

Lyn

becky,
i'm so glad to hear from you and buddy !!! it brightens my day when i see his picture!! i have missed you!! i'm glad you had some free time to pop in and update us. i know it is hard taking care of babies and toddlers, especially those long hours each day. i couldn't handle two of them !!! i have kept marleigh some but it's mostly her other grandmother. she lives less than 5 minutes away and is on their way to work. marleigh has a fun time there with her uncles who are 2 and 5 and they keep each other occupied. when she's here she wants me to play the whole time and not get out of her sight. i have to get everything done before she comes and fix something to reheat in the micro so we can have our playtime. she is into her kitchen as her favorite play but last week she started climbing everything !!! do you have any advice for that. she keeps climbing and falling at her house and getting all bruised up. they watch her but she climbs so much she falls before they can get to her....... is there a way to stop so much climbing??? they have moved all un-necessary things but she climbs everything else.

marleigh has been through a lot of teething too and gets the upset stomach with it. it's a bad time for them and they certainly let you know how bad they feel. it's rougher now that baby teething gels have been reported unsafe to use. we haven't ventured into potty training yet. i totally don't know about potty training a girl. i need to get a potty book....... got any suggestions?????

buddy is a wonderful westie !!! you have an enormous family and he is so sweet to them all !! he is such a blessing to have. kirby hasn't been around a lot of people and no children. it took kirby an entire year to stop barking at marleigh and being extremely jealous of her. he finally licked and kissed her one day after la la la and then he liked her. he runs to the jeep and waits for my ds to get her out and they walk up to her and kiss her hello. they have gotten along since then. but the last 2 visits he growled at her. first time she hit him with a toy a couple of times and last visit she fell on him. i hope he gets that loving feeling back !!
i am so glad buddy did well with his cyst removal. i know how scary it was. i thought kirby had a tick under his eyelid and it was a cyst. i was terrified for him to be put to sleep for surgery. when they got him to sleep they decided they could do laser instead of cutting his eyelid open which would have been harder to get well. he did great and his eyelashes finally grew back. i just hope it never comes back........ i was a total wreck until he woke up!!!!

i hope you can get some time for you and buddy to take those walks.... i know how much you enjoy them. if your grand kids are like marleigh.... the long naps are gone and only 15 to 20 minutes are taken now and that hardly leaves you time for yourself.
i have learned how out of shape i am now that marleigh is running and the chase is on. i'm determined to find a way to make the weight budge this year and get into better shape. we can do it !!!! we are the best team and we are here to help and encourage each other. i'm glad you came back to your spark family. we are here for you !!!!! by the way............it's great having you and buddy to be "stuck" with ............ lol !!!

Good to hear from you, Becky!

I could have written most of your post. It definitely isn;t easy to watch those GKs. I, too, watch two (and a parttime third). The 2 1/2 year old does not want to be potty trained. But diapers really are easier to change. At least you can plan that, while juggling the other one. My 'baby' is almost 9 months old, almost doing a full-out crawl now.

I watch them from 7:15AM to 5:15PM all five days. Plus I have pick up duty for the 1st grader. And two days a week I have to run her to gymnastic class after school. My DD started college, but we only have the one car, so I drive her to & from.

The three car seats barely fit in the back. I thought when we bought the last car I didn't have to worry about that anymore/ NOT. Taking DD to college gets us out though, and it trains the GKs to be flexible, and they see new things. It is a little boring always being at home. I only have a single carriage, so any walk is out right now.

I do take a nap when they go home. It is so frustrating to me, that time wasted. But I definitely need it.

Funny, how it didn;t seem that hard when I was 21-26, and had three little ones to watch. Youth and their energy is definitely wasted on the young. I try to have more protein and B-12.

Enjoy them! emoticon

It's been a long time since I last checked in! I have some time to let you know where I've been and what's been going on.

My heart is still with the Westie Team since the day I revived it 4 years ago from the abyss. I passed down the torch to very good hands, and I'm glad to see the team is still alive and barking!

My life has changed over the past year. My husband and I are watching two granddaughters five days a week! They are ages 3 years and 5 months! Yes... I said FIVE days a week!! From 7:30 to 5 or 6 in the evening. It makes for very long days!

Between potty training the oldest this year to now going through teething with the youngest, there is not much time left for this 68 yr old body but to rest after they have gone home!!

Once the weekend arrives DH and I spend our time cleaning the house together and then visiting our with our friends who have become neglected.

I'm not complaining, but I'm working harder now than I did all those years as a Network Administrator for the bank!! The only difference is ... this is much more rewarding.

My diet has been on that infamous 'roller coaster'. I lost 35 pounds and now slowly it is showing back up on my hips and tummy. (I must do something and quick!) You would think all this babysitting would just make those pesky pounds melt off... just like they did when I was 27 running after three boys under the ages of 5!! LOL!! NOT!!

Every morning I start off saying to myself, "This is a new day... and I'm going to make it happen!" But by the time the girls are packed up and picked up I'm heading for my evening cocktail and putting my feet up! SIGH!! Even Buddy crashes out!!

Speaking of 'Buddy'... he is doing great!! He is 5 yrs old and beautiful!! He just had his first dental appointment and a small minor surgery to remove a little beguine cyst about the size of a tick. In fact, it was first mistaken as a tick when found! We wouldn't have removed the cyst, but it was close to where his collar sits, and since he was going 'under' for his dental cleaning, why not take care of it!

Buddy and I haven't been walking as we used to. The "Killer Hill" has once again become my nemesis, but one day I know we will conquer it again. Buddy probably could stand to loose a couple pounds too! He is happy and a really good boy! I actually think he may be one of the best dogs we've ever had! He definitely a sweetheart! He loves the grandchildren ... actually he loves everyone, but he especially loves the kids! That's a real plus for a terrier!
emoticon
Enough of this! My point was (is) to tell everyone "hello!" and to let you know what I've been up to and to tell you that I do check in occasionally during nap times to see how everyone is and to catch up on articles.

After leaving Spark last year and deleting my account I will never do that again! My Spark Page and Points make me appear to be a beginner ... but I'm not ... I just made the mistake of thinking I didn't have the time and it was time for me to leave! My advice to anyone who is occupying that thought... don't!! Because this is a fabulous site and you will miss it terribly!

So Westie Fans, looks like you're stuck with me ... FOREVER!!
emoticon
