kirby and la la la love chicken but i always give it to them as a treat topping their dog food and it's cooked. i hadn't heard of feeding raw chicken. we have chickens here at the farm and they go feed them with their daddy. we call them "daddy's special birds" so they won't know they are the chicken they love to eat !!!
if they had raw chicken i think they would figure out where it came from and then go chicken hunting !!!

Raw ground chicken or turkey and canned salmon. With it being solid protein they don't need much either. My first westie, Biscuit had skin allergies from the start and when I switched her food from dog food to the raw chicken her skin problems stopped.

Wellness actually looks very good. As soon as I can, I am going to pick up a bag. Even their wetfood looks great. I can't wait to try it! My poor murphy is already on medicated shampoo and medication for his allergies. I feel so bad for him. I can't imagine what it feels like. I even bought him booties. He hid one so now he only has 3 booties left lol All my neighbors were making fun of him :(

As I mentioned before we feed Wellness simple rice & salmon, although I mix it up every once in awhile and use the rice & lamb or rice & duck. They seem to do well on all of it. We've given our itchy westies half a zyrtec pill and that helps. Also we bought episoothe shampoo at the vet. They have other medicated shampoos that they can perscribe for him. The episoothe you can buy over the counter without having to see the vet. We have friends whose westie is allergic to many things, including human dander! That's a really tough one. He's always in at the vet getting shots, but his coat is great. Hope you find something that works.

you might have to go with a grain free. I think the one Ella mentioned, Wellness is grain free and there are other brands. Petsmart is even selling grain free now.

I know I'm late answering this....

We feed our dogs Blue Buffalo chicken and brown rice. One of our westies has a history of getting sick all the time. We have finally found a food that doesn't make her itch or throw up. (YAY).

We had all our dogs on a grain free food and finally figured out it was too rich for Lucy. She has done wonderful on the Blue, no itching and no throwing up.

For treats, I make my own chicken jerky. I have a dehydrator and meat slicer. I don't buy anything that has wheat, corn, or soy in it. Yes, they are very spoiled.

Westies are actually known to have skin allergies. Benadryl does work but I'd ask the vet first. how much to give your dog.

Hope this helps.

The embarrasing thing is...and I pray the neighbors don't see when my dog does this...but when I take him out in the backyard to do his business...he starts to become itchy from being around the grass. He sort of "humps" the grass as a way to relieve the itchyness...I feel so bad for him but its really embarrassing (and kind of funny at the same time haha)! What he doesn't seem to realize is that he is just making it worse and than he eats it! I try to keep him from doing that but I can only follow behind him for so long saying "no! don't do that! no!"

kirby and la la la self medicate their upset tummies by eating grass. it has always worked for them. i hope they never develope a grass allergy !!!!

My Westie is allergic to GRASS too....I know its AWFUL right! Good thing is here in WI at least 8 months of the year our ground is covered in SNOW. Our vet has us give Shorty benadryl for the itching but he still is really itchy...so its lots of oatmeal baths for him. He will even jump in the tub when he gets to itchy. We did rule out food too, but food doesnt seem to be the case with him. I am sure one of our other Westie owners will be able to assist better than I could.

So I haven't yet come across with anyone that has a westie with as many allergy problems as mine. If you do have one similar, i would love to find someone to discuss food and solutions to itchyness. He is allergic to pork, alfalfa, carrots, white potato, corn and GRASS. Grass! I kid you not. Not to mention numerous treats and pollen.

Anywho...So I have been feeding him Natural Choice Lamb & Rice wet food and IAMS senior active dry food.

Shorty was getting potatoes, chopped chicken and gravy with a little Dry Bentiful added (just to make sure he was getting all his nutrients.....until......March. He got weighted and is over by at LEAST 10 lbs. His food has been cut back to 1/2 cup Bentiful mixed with 1/2 a Ceasear meat/gravy ...since he REFUSES to eat plain dry dog food. He also gets 1 baby carrot M-F while I am making hubby's lunch in the mornings. For snacks he gets 1 dentastick and 1 treat at bedtime.

Calvin eats Paul Newmans Organic dog food. He gets bloody stool on other dog foods. This is the only one I have found that agrees with him. It also makes treats. chess, Salmon and Sweet Potato, ect. He loves it

We feed ours Wellness Simple Rice & Salmon as I have a westie that's allergic to wheat, corn & barley. It's pricey & I can only find it at PetCo, but all the dogs are doing really well on it, so it's worth it. As far as snacks I have to stick to the no wheat, corn or barley, even quinoa affects her. Nutro makes small triangular blueberry, carrot & apple treats that work well. Newman's makes chicken & rice & peanut butter treats that they like. Nutro also makes a lamp & rice chop shaped treat that will work as will Natural balance duck & potato treats. Their favorites are fresh carrots, apples, melons & tomatoes. I just don't give them too much as I don't want to have any upset tummies!

Jolie tends to get what's on sale also. She used to get Ol' Roy (Walmart) a lot but as she's gotten older it doesn't agree with her.

That's pretty much all she gets from me. Her daddy, however, gives her lots of doggy treats and has been known to feed her from his own fork.

Just wondering what you all feed your Westies? Fancy dog food? Table food? Snacks?

Sorry to say, but Jake gets what's on sale. When he was a pup, we went to Petco and got Nutro Puppy Food, but now it's pretty much what's on sale. (Please don't throw me off the team!)

First thing in the morning, when we are making toast, he gets a half of a heel of bread. When we put him in his crate, he gets a bone (Milk Bone or Meaty Bone). He likes carrots when I am feeding the guinea. And he stands guard at Makenzie's high chair for anything falling that's edible.
