Yes, I love my shoe ID! In fact, all us girls have one on our shoes.

For my birthday they all knew that I was trying to "get back to where I once belonged" (JO-JO) and I got all kinds of things related to exercising. (I blogged about it around October.) Kristen was worried about Buddy and I walking alone and she said for me to wear that ID would make all of them feel so much better. My son, the Fire Captain, agreed.

I am truly loved, and its a very good feeling.

becky,
the shoe id tag is a great idea.
kathy,
you should still lock your door even if you don't think you should. you never know, someone may go in there while you're gone. we wouldn't want anything to happen to you and little fosse. i don't know what state you live in but there was an incident here in alabama a couple of years ago. a couple was going on a trip and gathered together items to copy in case of an emergency. after taking them to be copied, they were arrested.... it was illegal to make a copy of their drivers license !!!! stupidest thing i ever heard. companies have to make copies of peoples drives license all the time, which is ok, but you could'nt make one of your own !!!! so i would check out you local laws on that one.

What a wonderful idea...that is way too cool. How good it must feel to have a child think that much of you Becky. Wow

My daughter gave me Shoe ID that fits on my shoe. She had ingraved on it my name, address, phone number & 2 emergency contacts... plus she ingraved part of my motto, "It's up to me"

There are all kinds of ID that can be purchased but I love this shoe one. I leave it on my walking shoes 24/7. I don't know if this is where Kristen purchased mine but here's a link where you can get them.

Unfortunately people who are not responsible are everywhere and the best thing we can do is be prepared for others lack of it and pray that they will see the errors of their way. We can create laws and impose fines but it’s the lack of caring/respect people have for one another that is the reason for this lack of consideration.

This weekend I got a fanny pack and a small container of pepper spray which only cost $9.99, I will make a copy of my drivers license for ID in case I kill over of a heart attack and perhaps a whistle would be a good idea too. It is rather silly to leave the house w/o ID. I live in an area where I feel comfortable leaving my front door unlocked so don’t even worry about that but suppose I do need to be a good girl scout lol. I would like to get a cell phone but don’t want to pay the monthly charges for something I would only be using for emergencies.

that is an excellent idea. if they didn't know the pit lived there, they may can make them put it up or move out. if nothing else the homeowner may can force them to get a renters insurance that would cover dog attacks. otherwise they as the property owners may be forced to get the homeowners insurance that covers a viscious dog breed. good luck on this most important quest !!!! keep us posted.

I was discussing this with co-workers. We're in the insurance industry. We've decided that our friends need to contact the owner of the house and let them know that their renters have a pit bull that attacked a dog. They may not know and if this dog attacks again they certainly could be held liable since they now know about the dog. It may just make them take action to have renters get rid of the dog.

Little Maggie Mae is doing much better. Her Dad said she's ornery again and he took out in the car for ride yesterday. We're so glad. She was always a fiesty little girl and we'd hate to see her lose that.

Oh I just found this thread don't know how I missed it. So sorry to hear about the little cairn getting attacked. It makes me remember when Bella and I got chased and don't know what would have happened if the lady in the car had not come by.

I think that the owners of the dog should be forced to pay for the vet bills regardless and that the dog should have received a stronger sentence - if they are not punished then they won't have any incentive to try to prevent this from happening again.

That is so frustrating and unfair.

Wow, that makes ME mad, too. The next time it could be a child. If a pit bull (or any dog) attacks at all it should be put down. Why take a chance? I've seen this happen WAY too often. My sister had her ear torn off by a German Shepherd when she was in college. The dog had apparently attacked before, but the owners didn't do anything. It was going for my sister's neck, but she covered it with her hands and it tore her ear instead. Thankfully, a great plastic surgeon was on call and now you can't even tell - her ear looks normal. That poor little Cairn. They should take the owners to small claims court.

i am glad the poor little dog is getting better. it is so sad she is suffering because of irresponsible people. just a warning is redicilous. even a fine isn't enough. this dog shouldn't be loose, it should be in a safety pin and have a leash on. stuff like this really gets me so angry, especially when nothing is done to protect people and their pets from known dangerous breeds. i hope maggie continues to recover and can somehow get over her trauma

Heard from my friend today, the little cairn, Maggie, had the drain removed today. She went straight to her crate and also slept there last night. She must feel secure there. She usually sleeps on the bed. The animal control people gave the pit bull's owners a warning and they now have a file on the dog. Apparently these are renters in the house, with no liability insurance and no money to help with vet bills. I'm just furious. It seems there should be something more that could be done than just a warning. How about a fine at least? I'll keep you posted on her progress.

Sniffs...tradgic when our loved ones have trauma enough to change their personality. I never trust an animal even Fosse because we don't really know if they are having pain we don't know about. I think dobermans are beautiful dogs but after hearing of a syndrom they could have in which after years of owning and having a pleasant experience with their dob the dog turn vicious and attack even their owners. Sad indeed.

We advised our friend to carry wasp spray. Since you can shoot it from 20 feet away it's a better deterrent than normal sprays.

The cairn story is tragic. re: Kirby Jo I joined the Cesar Milan website and it has great lessons to work through for fearful dogs. Good luck. Some dog trainers recommend carrying a lemon juice squirter and squirt it in the attacking dog's eyes or mouth.

oh, that poor little dog. i think people that own the pit, & rots should always have their dogs on leash. even if it's the sweetest gentle dog like i hear some can be, they still need to be on a leash for legal reasons if nothing else. i personally think all dogs should be on a leash when outside. my hubby lets mine go outside in the yard with him without their leash on but i keep their leash on when i take them. we are at a farm and ther's not people to bite. how ever kirby joe did bark at the mailman and he is afraid of him and won't bring packages to our house. we have to make 40 mile round trip to the post office if we get a package.
when my westies were younger we would carry them to pet supplies plus and let them "shop" and get their treats and toys. they loved it, they'd see other dogs. one day a jack russel terrier approached kirby joe and it did the friendly tail wag etc. and then all of a sudden it bolted at kirby joe and bit his lip. then it went and did another dog that way. i was so mad at it's owner bringing in a biter. well kirby joe hadn't been around other dogs and didn't know they would do that so he was afraid of other dogs then. so after that when we would go there he'd bark at the other dogs so we had to quit going with them there. he barks at the other dogs at the vet too and we have to go sit in the vets office or walk him outside. he has issues but there has been a bad experience that has caused each one. so i do know the causes of why he has them. i wish i could fix everything for him, he is the best dog in the world, if someone offered me a million dollars and said go get rid of him and buy another one, i'd say no way kirby joe is my baby and i love him, problems and all and i wouldn't take a million dollars for him.

Our friend's little cairn was attacked the other day. He was walking her through their neighborhood and walked past a larger dog when suddenly this dog grabbed the cairn from behind! Poor little thing, luckily he was able to pull her to safety, but she has eight stitches and a drain. Come to find out this other dog was a pit bull and off leash!! He filed a report with the animal control officer for the city. How frightening. This little dog used to get her leash and bring it to our friend for her walks, she loved them so much. Now she's hiding under their bed.

I walk usually during daylight. At night, I will wear the orange vests that have reflective tape. Lots of people drive up and say how much they appreciate it. I have my phone and from my martial arts training, just pay attention - no ear pieces, no iPod, no juggling extra stuff so my hands are full. I try to have one hand free to potentially defend myself.

There is a large field where dogs can be off leash. I never go at dusk or night. And now, I can drag my hubby.

For my dogs, I have this coat that protects Mac's underside from mud and muck. Its called Muddy Mutts from Canada. Its great at this time of year.

We were blessed with 5 acres in the country and its field fenced which fosse can get through but I much enjoy walking with her. 7 years ago I closed my business and pretty much reclused into my house. There were months I never stepped outside let alone grocery shop. Bless my husband he loves it thank God. Fosse is my life line to the outside world. Yesterday I walked 1 mile down the road and back up looking at all my unknown neighbors yards, mind you I was a real hillbilly as I was dressed in latex bike leggings a blue jean jacket and huge rubber boots that I wear because it rains so much here…time for shoes. All this at 331 pounds, so you see she is my life line. As I was walking I thought to myself…wow you could have a heart attack and you carry no identification, have no phone, ect. It’s like being a child all over again but hey I was walking on the correct side of the road lol.

I have a fenced exercise area for my westies. We live in the country and coyotes, skunks, armadillos, squirrels run wild. Those squirrels are vicious creatures, let me tell you. Nah, but Westies love to chase squirrels. So I do not want to take a chance of rabies, parvo, worms, animal attacks, etc. It is a huge area where we can play fetch, walk in circles to work with leashes, and my hubby wants to start competing with agility. All the walking parks restrict animals to service type only. So this was the best choice for us to exercise our brood.

Okay ladies I would like to ask you all a question...

What safety precautions do each of you take when you’re out by yourself? Seems most of us live in a household that joint walking for general health or walking our precious Westies is done solo.
