I confess I'm still confused how if 1 tsp of instant coffee has 1/2 gram of carbs, how 3 tsp suddenly has 15 grams, instead of 1.5 grams. So...I am just brewing cold brewed overnite coffee and skipping the instant.

I think real coffee is pretty much zero carbs, it's the instant stuff that has carbs. Most teas are probably fine too.

I did not know this.

Now I'm wondering about tea. Something to look into

Well the nutrition info that I looked up said 0.5 grams of that kind of instant coffee had 0.5 grams of carbs. In other words 100% carbs, or close enough.

See my profile picture? A digital scale. I put three of MY scoops of instant coffee in each cup of water. Rather than weigh 3 scoops, I decided to get a better average. I weighed 9 scoops. It came out to 15 grams, so each of MY cups of instant coffee might have had 5 grams of carbs.

A teaspoon of instant coffee weighs about 2 grams.

Indeed I'm putting in somewhere between two and three teaspoons, different instant coffees have different carb percentages, so it all depends.

This Nescafé instant coffee says it is only 50% carbs by weight:

How are you getting that a .5g (half of a gram) of carbs per cup equals 15 grams in three cups? Are you talking about the things you add to your coffee? like creamer or something?

I'm trying to figure out if I add a teaspoon of instant coffee to my protein shake, how many carbs am I adding....the charts all say about a half a gram.

So why do so many people feel like a cup of coffee is so high in carbs?

The instant coffee I was drinking had no nutrition label on the jar. I couldn't find it on the Internet either.

But this link for example:
http://www.carbs-information.com/coffee/
carbs-in-instant-coffee.htm

Shows 0.5 grams of instant coffee has 0.5 grams of carbs, 100% carbs. So I assumed the worst for my brand. I weighed what I put in my coffee cup, about 5 grams. I was having 3 cups a day. So I was possibly drinking an extra 15 grams of carbs a day. My daily target is 30 grams. An extra 15 is significant for me.

What I do know is that since I've stopped drinking instant coffee, and cut down on cheese, I am loosing weight after a year long stall.

While brewed coffee taken black has negligible carbs, many people react to coffee with raised blood sugar levels. I don't know what the mechanism is, but like with any other food, you only know how you will do by testing your own reaction.

I am reading such wildly varying information on instant coffee, and if it has carbs or not.

I found this chart:

http://www.carb-counter.net/beverages/20
79

It would appear that instant plain coffee, 1tsp per cup of water is less than a gram of carbs, but I keep seeing people talk about the outrageous carbs in instant coffee...what's up?

Are they talking about highly flavored, high sugar, coffee"drinks" like cappuccino?
