vala, As long as we take diabeties seriously It does not have to hinder us. It can be a blessing to force disipline our life. If left unchecked it has serious consequences as you know. I have found many ways to control my blood sugar naturally. My doctor did not tell me all of them, I had to research it for myself. Everyone is different and needs different help.

Thanks everyone. I got the official diagnosis today and started on Medformin 500 mg 2 x a day. I am really scared but I hope that with time I will accept it and even think of it as a good thing for saving my life. I think we caught it early because my numbers are only in the 200 sometimes but mostly they range between 135-158 before I eat and 150-185 after I eat a meal. So it hasn't gotten too out of hand yet and with weight loss and exercise I am told I could possibly reverse it. So if anyone has any advice for me regarding exercises that are not too strenuous or foods that are not loaded with bad carbs I'm willing to try and follow it. Again, thank you all.

Hi vala, I am fairly new to messaging but not to diabeties, I am sure you will find this forum useful. Diabetes forced me to deal with things I might not have otherwise, because of that I count it as a blessing in my life. when I was diagnosed 15 years ago I was 300 pounds It has been a long road but Im 215 now. God Bless

Welcome Vala. Even if you aren't diabetic, you will be able to learn about it and maybe prevent it from happening. So welcome!

I'm not sure what bloodtests she ordered but she was very thorough-3 vials of blood. Testing everything including Thyroid(I only have a piece left), cholestrol and urine sample for protien in the urine. I bet she did order an AC1 test. With all my other medical problems Diabetes is the last stop on the train. Even if it shows I am fine, I have to change my lifestyle.

Thanks for the words about me joining, I am always a little leary of joining a new team. But I am the leader of a team too. http://teams.sparkpeople.com/touretters_un

Vala,

We're so glad you joined! If you don't mind my asking, has the doctor done an AC1 test on you yet? That's a blood test that can be used to test your 3 month blood sugar average. If your blood sugar is averaging 100-125 that's considered pre-diabetes. Anything over 125 is typically diagnosed as diabetes.

I've only been diagnosed for a little over 3 months, but I'm choosing to see it as a challenge to live healthy, not a death sentence!

We are, after all, diabetics winning the battle! :)

Spark mail me if you need anything.

God Bless!
Sam

I just joined your team because I may have Diabetes. I will hopefully find out by next Friday. I can only hope my Dr. is wrong. But I doubt it! I was concerned when I found out my cousin has had Diabetes for two years. Now it seems there is reason to be worried. I hope we can all defeat this. And you can sparkmail me if anyone wants to talk.

That's great that he is execising and being very consistent about it. I have been walking for at least 15 minutes every day, which isn't much but considering that a week ago I didn't even do that, I am making slow and steady progress.

My doctor is sending me to a diabetes class where I can learn more about my condition, how to check my blood and eat better. I am actually looking forward to it because I have kids who need me to be around for a long time and a husband who needs me too.

Keep up the good work. We can't be perfect but we can be better and as long as we have more progress than setbacks, we are doing alright!

Thanks! We went to the book store today and he bought a book about Type 2 Diabetes and I got 3 cookbooks that are diabetic recipes. Then we went to the store and bought some groceries and did our best with getting low sugar/carbs/sodium. Somethings we decided to just wait to get til we know and understand more. He is feeling overwhelmed. He is become obsessed I guess in the last 24 hours with finding out everything and then with making sure he exercises. this is the 4th day in a row for the exercise on a constant basis.

Hi Jammom,

I don't mind you joining the group. I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes also. My dad was also diagnosed with diabetes when I was 16 but he was insulin dependant and it really helped him when we all learned about the condition and learned what we could do to help him.

The way I see it, the more you know, the more you can help and that way he will not have to feel as if he's going through this all alone. And good for you for wanting to help him. Not everyone is lucky enough to have a supportive partner.

Best of luck to both of you.

Hello everyone. I hope I'm not stepping on toes but I'd like to join your group. Here is the story then you can tell me. My husband and I are trying to loose weight and making it a family thing. He recently had to a work physical and his blood pressure came back too high. We made an appt. with the reg. physician and they started doing blood tests and gave him meds for the high blood pressure. Now with all the tests back, we went in to discuss the lab results and the Dr. told him yesterday that he has Type 2 diabetes. He is in shock as I am. I am going to go have a physical done after we get him over this and into a regular routine. We are doing this as a family with the kids but I want to support him by learning as much about this and encouraging him every way I can. I hope you don't mind me joining but if you would rather I don't since I'm not the one that is diabetic, I can certainly understand.

Deborah, I hear you on the Dr. Peppers and carbs! I love 'em both.

I too just found out about 2 months ago that I have diabetes. That's why I started this team, to find other folks with the same struggles. I know we can learn from each other and encourage each other.

While there isn't a "cure" for diabetes - once you have it, you have it - my doctor says it is possible to lose enough weight that it can be controlled with diet and exercise alone. I'm looking forward to the day that I can throw out my diabetes meds, my asthma meds and my acid reflux meds.

I have lost 20 pounds and have another 140 to lose, mkaing my goal to lose 160 pounds to weigh 160 pounds - that's half myself! :)

You guys feel free to spark mail me if you ever need anything.

I'm 52, married, two grown sons and three grandchildren. I need to lose 100 pounds. I have a multitude of health problmes: Fibromyalgia,; arthritis; asthma; prehypertensive; prediabetic; allergies and IBS. The over all contributing factor to all of these ailments and my weight gain was having Thyroid cancer in 1992. I no longer have any thyroid tissue and take Lavoxyl. As a result loosing weight is very difficult. It doesn't help that I love carbs and Dr Pepper.

Hi there,

I too recently found out that I'm diabetic. I have a long family history of it and well I'm certainly not in shape. I have heard and do believe, that acheiving a healthy body weight can help with the diabetes. I don't know about curing it, but it is possible to come off medication and fend of further complications by losing weight and gaining muscle tissue. Anyway, congrats on joining the group. I too just joined the other day.

Hi everyone, I just joined your spark team, and hopefully we can help each other back to health. I have recently been told by my doctor I have type II diabetes which she says is caused by my weight. She said she guarantees the diabetes would go away once I lost 100 pounds. I honestly find that hard to believe, but I'm giving it my all. I'm looking forward to any suggestion any one can give. Thanks
