Hi! New around here but not new to diabetes. I'm 34yo mom of 2 who are 6 and 4. Have had type I diabetes for 20 years and have been very fortunate not to have any complications. Although I have been pretty well controlled since the kids were born it has been difficult to maintain that good control and my A1c went up to 9 ;( I have been on an insulin pump the last 10 years and I love it! Changed to it after starting in the ER full time 12 hour busy shifts make it difficult to take 6-8 injections and get meals on time. The pump gives me the ability to cut my insulin by 60% while I work to avoid lows. A big wake up call besides the A1c was a bad car accident in October '06 from a low sugar. I woke up in a helicopter. Through Gods grace no one was seriously hurt. Well that's me.
Have a great day!
Leslie

I sure do know what you mean, and we as diabetics cetainly don't need anymore problems on top of the diabetes. So it is best to have a plan and follow it even though it may not be perfect.

Hey Sam,

I take 4 shots of insulin a day. 3 rapid and one at bedtime that is a new insulin here in Canada. I was one of the national test subjects ( or guinea pigs ) and it really worked for me.

I watch pretty well all my sugar and carb intake amounts, and I am allowed only a certain amount each meal.

It's tough, but if I don't follow my diabetes diet plan, the health problems that result are not pleasant.

Mike

Greetings from Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Someone on another discussion thread pointed me to this web site. It is a treasure trove of info. In addition, you can have a live chat with a nutritionist.

It is such an inspiration to read the different threads for this team and learn how well so many of you are doing. I've really been trying to each properly and exercise, but the sugar levels have been out of whack for quite a while now.

I had a particularly bad day yesterday. While my Blood Glucose is still a bit high this morning (163) it is much better than it was when it hit an all time high for me yesterday (303) then remained in the 200's all day. I am praying that the much improved reading today is an indicator that I have turned a corner and am now moving toward getting the diabetes under control.

I think we (humans) take for granted just how much complexity God put into creating the human body. We are indeed "fearfully and wonderfully made." When the internal chemistry gets out of whack it throws the entire system out of balance.

I know my diabetes is a result of my own failure to take proper care of my body. I allowed this temple of the Holy Ghost to fall in disrepair. I thank God for His grace, mercy and forgiveness as He helps me reverse the damage so I will become the fit and healthy woman God created me to be.

Hi SKINNY_SAM-

I am new to the group so I've been reading through older posts trying to get to know everyone. I noticed a post where you wished for chocolate flavored gum. It isn't gum, but have you tried the sugar Velamints? They come in both chocolate and Vanilla flavors and both are DELICIOUS! Velamints are a great way for me to curb cravings for candy.

Got a Q for the team

I have about 100+ articles on diabetes care, management and what not, some I have the links to the orginal article others I don't (as in some of the the orginal site that had the info no longer has that article online) .. would the team like it if I created a topic area for nothing but articles or some other suggestion so that the articles might be there for those who wish to read them?

Hey everyone!

I went to the doctor yesterday for my three month visit. It's been three months since I was first diagnosed. Sometimes it seems like just yesterday and other times it feels like a million years ago.

Anyway, the doctor seemed impressed by my progress. My AC1 went from 7.5 to 6.4 (avg 110-120). I was stinkin' exciting. AND I lost 27 pounds in 3 months. Go me! :)

For me it's just a matter of keep on keepin' on! :)

Sorry to hear about your tooth. I have one that needs to be pulled that was bugging me last week. It's broken off around the filling. Anyway, I hope yours feels better soon and whatever is affecting your blood cell count leaves too.
Soft food suggestions:
sugar free pudding (at least your are getting your dairy and protein)
There is a weight control oatmeal that is high fiber and protein--it seems to do okay with my blood sugar
Yams or sweet potatoes? also high fiber
Smoothies (there's recipes in the recipe message board)
I'll keep thinking about it. Zane was just on a soft food diet too, but he could eat fattening stuff.

Hey everyone!

It's been a while since I've been online. Things have been pretty crazy.

I'm feeling kinda yuck today. I started coming down with some kind of funk earlier in the week. Went to the doctor yesterday. I had a high white blood cell count so they loaded me up with some high power antibiotics. On top of all that I have a tooth ache caused my my TMJ (teeth clenching.) The doctor gave me a prescription for some codine / fenagrin (sp?) cough syrup. I usually don't get crap like that filled, but my tooth was hurtins so I got it. It did help, but oh my goodness am I ever hung over this morning!

So I guess it's soft foods only for me for a couple of days until my jaw / teeth get better. That's kind of hard. I've had this happen a few times before, but that was before I knew I was diabetic. Most good soft foods are carb loaded. (Mac-n-cheese, baked potatoes / mashed potatoes, oatmeal, pudding, icecream, etc.) Any ideas out there for good soft foods that are also healthy and not disgusting to eat? (If anyone says mashed carrots I will yack.) :)

Good news is I'm down a couple of more pounds. Between the not eating 'cause of my jaw thing and the not-so-pleasant side effect of strong antibiotics, I ought to lose a bunch of weight this week. Not the ideal way to do so though.

Oh well. I guess I'm kind of whiny today. Just tired and hung over. :)

Chungfa,

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm trying hard not to get down on myself when I can't fit in a formal walk and continue to try and remember that any movement I am doing counts because a few weeks ago, I wasn't moving much at all.

When I go to the market or shopping, I push my basket as fast as I can and walk around the store as much as I can instead of just getting in, grabbing my stuff and getting out. It's still a walk if I'm walking around Target and it's probably even more of a workout since I'm pushing a heavy basket full of stuff (I never get out of that place without spending at least $200).

This next week is going to be crazy for me. I'm was going to start homeschool for the kids but I might have to wait and push it back a week, ,that's another great thing about homeschooling, you can start whenever you want. We are in the process of getting our old home ready to sell. We moved about 20 miles away and next week we are having the new carpet and floors installed in the old house and someone has to be there and since my husband works, that someone will have to be me. I also have to take my kids and myself to the dentist, which is right across the street from our old house. They couldn't get us all in on the same day so I have to make 3 trips out there next week in addition to the trips I need to make to the old house, so I will be in the car a lot.

I have decided that I will walk with my daughter around the neighborhood while we wait for the carpet and floors to be installed. I will also walk around the outside of the dental office while my kids are getting their teeth cleaned. Every little bit helps!

Good luck to everyone with their eating and exercise this upcoming week.

Random ramblings are great--at least I hope so cuz that's what I do sometimes.

Well I'm "biting the bullet" and trying Byetta. I have heard good stuff about it and something has got to trigger some weight loss. I'm hoping having that morning reminder will be one more motivator to exercise. For those who don't know it's an injectible medication.

I think you're right. I'm going to move my alarm clock! :)

Boy, things have been super crazy the last week or so. I've been working, working, working. I'm hoping that things are going to settle down at work this week.

I took the night off from church tonight and cleaned my house. It felt good. I would usually come home and crash out and be lazy, but somehow I feel a lot more rested and peaceful knowing my tub is clean, the dishes are washed and all the laundry is folded. I put in some new plug ins so everything smells nice and clean. Plus, I guess I got some exercise in with all that vacuuming, sweeping, etc. Go me.

I've been around the same weight this week. Hubby and I splurged over the weekend on our "mini" vacation to Memphis. (We went to Graceland and a Redbirds game! How can you not cheat at the ballgame?)

I gained a couple of pounds, probably fluid, but I've pretty much lost them back, so I'm back at my ticker wait. So, no real damage done.

I'm enjoying finding "too small" stuff in my closet that I can wear again. That's super fun.

Guess this has been random ramblings. Oh well.

Good night friends. :)

Hi Sam,
Try this... try moving the alarm out of arm's reach. That way to turn it off you have to get up and if possible put it on the loudest settings so that its really annoying and forces you to get up. emoticon

Welcome to all our new members. I'm so excited that this board is growing! :)

And way to go to all you exercisers. I need the inspiration! My schedule is so tight that the only way I can get exercise in is to get up pretty early. In the state of half asleep / half awake my subconcious seems to win out every morning by reaching over and hitting the snooze button. I need something to blast my butt out of bed in the mornings! Any ideas?

Welcome Shelldon,

Sounds like you are doing great already!

I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and put on Metformin (500 mg 2x day) and Actos once a day along with a low dose blood pressure med to act as a kidney protector.

I need to lose about 160 pounds so I will be around for a while...lol! I too would like to get healthy and get off my meds and also be around for a very long time so I can watch my kids grow up and have kids of their own.

I have been walking about 15 minutes day so far and trying to work myself up to 30 minutes per day one month from now. I know I will be able to do it, I just need to remember that I cannot go from not walking at all to running marathons in a few days time.

Good luck to you.

Deb

Hi all, I'm a new member of this group and would like to take the opportunity of introducing myself. My name is Shelldon and I live in Jamaica. I have been diagonised with Type 2 diabetes and hypertension for years and have now decided to be more proactive in my treatments. As such, I joing SparkPeople to try and lose 15 lbs and to get healthy in an attempt to come off the medications, if possible. I have been on Diamicron, Avandia and Metformin for my diabetes and Micardis Plus and Nifedi-Denk for my hypertension.

Well good news emoticon , since joing SP at the begining of the month; I have loss 7 lbs and have been taken off the Avandia and the Diamicron. I'm still on the Metformin 250mg twice a day and might need to increase it if my blood sugar doesn't remain within the normal range.

This was accomplished with drinking more than 64oz of water daily, walking for 30 minutes at least 5 times a week and doing some strenght exercises at least 3 times a week. But most importantly, monitoring and reducing my portion sizes of the foods I eat.

Well that's all for now..will update more later. Glad to be here. emoticon

Morning everyone,

I use to be on metformin 500mg twice a day to equal 1,000mg .. was taken off of it because don't need it any longer since my BG levels are in the normal range .. the only ones i'm still on are avandia, baby asprin, chromium and estrol - i wish he'd take me off of, but no chance of that since there are no other choise left to me which I am not already allergic towards.

I don't follow any diet plan, i just watch what I eat and work out for the most part .. if anything the closes deal i come to following anything in regards to a diet is High Carb and thats not because I wish to but because I have to. Thanks to haveing a condition known as Porphyria I have to have a high carb deal a min of 300g a day - and for all that my BG levels now that I am getting upwards of the 300g a day are now in the normal range of 4 to 6 which pleased my doc's big time.

I joined SP mostly for the tracking features for food and working out that and the fact that it appeared to have a good forum, didn't join it because of its meal deals those are not something I follow, even the SP calorie deal I don't follow 100% - i tend to follow what the dietitions have set out for me in regards to cal range since they are taking all my medical conditons and allergies into consideration which means i'm averaging 1700 to 1800 calories a day (sp has me at 1780 to 213)

Thanks Carilyne! It was exciting.

I haven't been on the board a lot lately myself. I'm the editor of two weekly newspapers, my husband is a youth pastor and I find myself perpetually overcommitted to differnet civic organizations and the such. I'm the president of my Rotary club right now. Plus I want to spend all the time I can on sparkpeople - that just doesn't pan out to be a lot of time sometimes. :)

I love my job though. It's definately interesting. I never do the same thing everyday. In a small paper, the editor is also a reporter, the book keeper, the ad maker, the butt chewing taker and the janitor / maintenance person if needed. If you want to check out my newspapers they are online: www.tri-citytribune.com and www.trumanndemocrat.com.

Speaking of work, I guess I should get off here and get ready to go to work.

God Bless you!
Sam

Wow Sam--fitting into the old jeans is great! I can't wait until I can start fitting into old clothes. It's been so long I'm not sure I have any actually.
Good job on the blood sugar. This week has been crazy for me. I've been in denial over the diabetes for so long I still haven't got in the habit and this week my 15 year old had surgery so I didn't remember to do it at all. Maybe this group can help me remember to start doing that next week.
What kind of work do you do?
Thank you for your warm welcome. Now that the surgery is over and the kids are almost in school I hope to post here more often. I like the small size of the group--not so many new people to learn. But it looks like it's growing and that's good. Til later...Hang in there.

Hey everyone!

I have several praises to the Lord this morning.

1. I tried on an old pair of pants yesterday not expecting them to fit and they did! With room to spear! The last time I can remember wearing those pants was January!!!!!

2. My bloodsugar before dinner last night was 92 and then it was 103 this morning!!! These are record lows for me.

3. Also, I lost about a pound and a half, bringing me down to 300.2. Slightly frustrating because I wanted to log in the 299 number, but Iíll get there soon enough!

I had someone call in sick at work today, which means I have to cancel everything I had planned to work on today and stuff newspapers. I hate it, but with so many other good things happening I donít see how I can complain.

Thank you Lord! :)

Hope everyone has a blessed day.

Sam

LOL. I know what you mean. Candy, especially anything chocolate, is my weakness. I've been chewing a lot more gum lately. Get the sweet that way without the calories / sugars. Now, if only they made chocolate flavored gum! :)

Way too often. Do I really have to count those Jolly Ranchers I ate as a reward for having a healthy breakfast and lunch?

Here's a new question - do you ever "reward" yourself by eating bad foods?

I'm terrible at this. I lost a couple of pounds this week, and as a "treat" I ate probably a whole pound of chips at the Mexican restaurant.

I take Lantus and Byetta. I'd love to get off the Lantus, because one of the side effects of insulin is weight gain. One of the side effects of Byetta is weight loss, but right now they're cancelling each other out.

As far as a diet plan, I'm supposed to count carbs: 45 per meal, and 15 for a snack. We just got home from vacation, and yesterday I think I used a full day's carbs at breakfast alone. Lunch was a full day's calories. I'm going to try to stick to the plan today, because I'm not happy with where my sugar's been.

Hi to the couple of folks who have joined! I'm glad to have some new friends on the journey.

So, tell me what kind of treatment plan you're all on? Me, I'm trying to lose the weight (hence Spark People). Right now I'm taking 1,000 mg of metformin a day. My doctor says if I lose enough weight I might be able to get off the meds altogether.

They made me super sick at first, but I think I'm fine now. Seem to be working pretty well for me.

Do you guys follow any particular diet as far as how many carbs / sugars per day?
