I'm happy this morning. I've lost another pound and a half, I'm still keeping my sugar under control and my family are so proud of me that even they are watching their weight. I've been packing salads in my husbands lunch box every day this week instead of sandwiches. My son asked me last night for a healthy snack. He was a little hungry and didn't want anything fattening. lol....I love it...It makes things much easier for me when the whole family is on board.

I like the ones by Lowery's that you heat up in the microwave. If you haven't tried them, give it a try...you won't be disappointed. I get them at the Dollar General Store over by the jerky...

Low carb snack tonight is deep fried pork rinds. One gram of carbs for 15 grams of the stuff. Perfect for diabetics.

Compare that to potato chips, 15 grams of that would have 6 grams of carbs.

I was reading up on A1C and noticed something interesting. The A1C test can give a high or low result with different medical conditions and drug interactions. Here is an article discussing this:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles
/PMC3401751/

High-dose vitamin C is implicated as giving falsely low A1C. You are OK if you are taking 1000 mg but higher may be an issue.

Following up on this, I found this article about C on the Mayo Clinic website, which cites a study associating as little as 300 mg vitamin C supplementation in women with diabetes with higher cardiovascular disease. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/vitamin-c
/NS_patient-vitaminc/DSECTION=safety

Other information is mixed. A study in men showed lower blood sugar in men taking 1000mg of vitamin C, but also an anecdotal report, published in a major medical journal, of a man experiencing high blood sugar as a direct result of supplementing with 5000 mg vitamin C that disappeared when he discontinued the vitamin C.

Not sure what I will do about this. I have for decades taken a large daily vitamin C supplement, at the advice of a friend who thought it was helpful for singers wanting to avoid colds. I figured it couldn't hurt and might help. At this point if I want to stop I will have to do so gradually since I've long since become acclimated to these high levels.

Cashews have about twice the carbs and twice the protein on a volume basis (comparison is for 1/3 c serving) vs. macadamia nuts. Macadamias also have less omega 6, which is the main reason I eat them.

Oh yah, a medium banana has about 30 grams of carbs. My personal daily limit right there. A medium orange has about 15 grams of carbs.

I corrected my previous post, which for an hour or so said Macademia nuts were bad. WRONG ... it's cashews that are high in carbs.

Thanks James, I splurged at dinner last night had a banana and an orange my blood sugar spiked up to 177 after. emoticon I love fruit and I can't seem to leave it alone emoticon . Looks like I have to stop the bananas or at least not make them an everyday item. This morning it was just flax in a muffin with my coffee.

Subject: Cashews are worse than mashed potatoes

I had a horrible feeling two days ago. Morning fasting blood sugar was 9.1, or 164 depending on your blood sugar scale.

Scared the heck out of me. I traced it to the 150 grams of cashews I ate as a late night snack the evening before. That almost tripled my daily target of 30 grams of carbs per day. Turns out cashews are 30% carbs. That even beats mashed potatoes by a big margin.

No more of those, ever. Looks like peanuts or Macademia nuts or similar from here on at 6% net carbs.

KATTREE,
Good for you!

It is pretty normal for blood sugar to go up after eating. As a diabetic what tends to be abnormal is how long it takes to come down after eating, and also as a diabetic ones morning, fasting blood sugar tends to be higher than a non-diabetic.

108 in the morning is pretty good without medication. What I found on the Internet says 70 to 100 is "normal" and 101 to 125 is pre-diabetes. I myself would be happy with 108.

Thanks Wildkat and James, its good to know that it will be the next few days rather than 2 week waiting to see. You should have seen me yesterday I took my bloodsugar so many times! The highest it went was 149. This morning it was 108 which is Ok, often it ran that with the medication. Oh I tried 2 new things today, flax muffin ( which tasted pretty good to me) and spinage bread made of Kale which was yucky.
I am glad your dad had such a great day ;yesterday.
oops I got to run for now will be back later today.

WILDKAT,
I didn't want to say it, but you did, thanks.

If KATTREE finds that her blood sugar is a little high without the medication there are two things to try. One is to lower carbs and try something like 50 grams a day. The other is to go back on medication.

Kat - I'm with James...you should know in a few days if you are eating low enough carb to stay off the meds...you may have to adjust your carb intake to get to where you want to be.

..............

I got my "real" Christmas present yesterday....Daddy did better yesterday than he has all year!!!! Was an awesome day and I really want more just like it!!!

My computer is still giving me issues...actually it is my internet, not the computer itself...tech help says there is something wrong with my lines and are supposed to come out by the 30th to fix it...in the mean time my internet access is spotty.

I hope you all have a great weekend!!!

KATTREE,
the half life of metformin is 6 hours. So just one day after not taking any it is cut in half 4 times. So only 1/16 remains, or about 6%. You don't have to wait and see how things are in two weeks. Two or three days are sufficient.

But do keep a good eye on your blood sugar for a few days and reasonable checks during the first 2 weeks. Don't panic right away if it does go up. That happens sometimes anyway. Watch the trends.

If it does go up you will probably see that you ate carbs before it went up. You do track what you eat and when right?

Blood sugar can change very quickly after eating. In just 15 minutes. That change can last an hour, and if you are a diabetic it can stay elevated longer than a non diabetic.

Thanks James for the encouragement.
I am nervous about this, but as they say 1 day 1 step at a time.
I checked it this morning (117) and before(84) and after(114) lunch, so far it is not spiraling out of sight. It will take 2 weeks for me to see if this is going to happen.

KATTREE,

my experience of the last 19 months is if I eat low carb my blood sugar doesn't go up. I'm now free of multi-years of metformin. Best wishes on your success.

Morning all, We had a really nice but quite Christmas with phone calls from family. My daughter is in Boston area, Son in Korea, and parents in law up in Canada. None of us were able to get together but we reached out to each other. I have his peanutbutter protein bar in my permanent recipe file so yummy.
Well Christmas is over and I have no further excuses, so I stopped my metformin today. I hope to stay off, the next 2 weeks will tell the tail. emoticon

No real changes James, except that I am eating more onions...I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not....but I got a "stonewave" microwave cooking pot and it cooks an onion just great...so I've been eating a lot of those...although that ups my carb count a little bit it lowers my calories a whole lot

KATTREE,
I forgot about that. Yes chromium rings a bell. It does seem to help make your insulin more effective. Some other similar, supplements too. Zinc and magnesium.

I did take chromium for a while, years ago. I just don't know if chromium made any difference for me. Got me thinking though. My blood sugar is under control eating low carb, but my last two A1c tests were slightly above average, but not high enough to require meds.

Perhaps now that I'm not swimming in insulin, it will make a difference.

Here is a page I found on chromium

Kat I used to take cinnamon but I don't think it really did anything, I was broke one week when I ran out and didn't get any more and I haven't noticed a difference in my sugar levels. as for chromium...well I can't remember exactly why - but I'm not supposed to take it with my blood thinner so I've never tried it. I do know that some people swear by it though.

Morning, has anyone heard of chromium in supporting glucose utilization? My doctor recommended that I try it when I stop my diabetic medication. I found some with cinnanmon plus chromium. Looking on the internet I seemed to get mixed reviews. not sure the amount I need to take, the bottle say to take 2 capsules a day that would be 200mcg.

KATTREE,
I sent another invitation. The name of the group is:
"Sparking Low Carb, Moderate Protein, Variable Fat"

Not a great name, but a great small group of people.

Afternoon, slow day at work so I was able to stay home today.
I did my walk that I do on my off days. and tried to make pancakes ( should have stuck with James' recipe but I wanted to try it with coconut powder as well as the protein powder. I was hoping for a little thicker pancake. What a mess! decided to throw the whole mess away, they were sticking to the pan, not cooking through and tasting greasy. Ended up with oatmeal and some flexseed.
I don't know which low carb group he was talking about Kathy. He hasn't had time to get back with me on it.
Oh and after thinking about it I decided to stay on my medication until after Christmas. I want to be successful in staying off of it. I'm hoping less distractions and a little more weight off will help me be successful. So I think I'll wait until 1st of the year before stopping it. I am a little nervous about going off it I want to have a good chance of staying off.

Subject: my last Atkins bar

I'm not ever eating another Atkins bar.

The package had on the front:
16 grams of protein
1 gram of sugar
2 grams "Net Atkins Count (TM)"

Looks fantastic, on the back it does say 19 grams of carbs. Hmmmm. Where did the other 17 or so carbs go? Sugar alcohols that don't "count"?

Experiment time. On an empty stomach this morning

6.9 mmol/L (fasting)
7.7 (15 minutes after eating the bar)
8.3 (30 minutes after)
11.4 (60 minutes after)
10.4 (75 minutes after)

My blood sugar spiked at 11.4 mmol/L, or 205 mg/dL. A mere 2 grams of carbs don't do that to you.

may I invite you to a low carb group? Eating low carb is how I manage my diabetes without meds, after 9 years of metformin.

emoticon back again today.. Just got back from the doctor he said I could stop the diabetic medication that I would know in 2 weeks weather I needed to go back on it or not. I am pretty excited.. I am thinking of not stopping until after Christmas season though when there's a little less stress going on. I still have more weight to lose but he was happy with what I have done.
Also thanks for the Sparks Goodie.

WILDKAT,
I'm still working on it but it's turning out more like dense peanut butter bread. The density is somewhere between heavy bread and a fudge brownie.

I used crunchy peanut butter, so I added a little texture to it. It looks like a loaf will cut into about 10 slices, each with one "James net carb (TM)". Unlike the disappointing "Atkins net carbs (TM)", James net carbs are exactly the same as real net carbs.

I panicked over my HgA1c numbers. Saw my doctor today and they were actually 6.6%, down from 6.7% a year ago.

4.5 to 6.0 is "normal". 5.7 to 6.4 is pre-diabetes. 6.5 or higher is diabetes. 7.0 or higher needs medication.

I made some "bars" of my own today from protein powder and peanut butter. Recipe to be posted later. I also made some chips from protein powder. Not exactly potato chips, but actually pretty good. Also to be posted later.

Afternoon, had a dentist apptment this morning, I have a broken tooth that he will repair next mondayl I came home with a headache but i think thats due from a lack of sleep. ( I was on call last night and I don't sleep well when I am on call) I did take a 15 min. walk with the dog and if I can get rid of this headache I plan a longer one.
I hope everything went well James. I don't know much about Atkin bars, but I never have like bars of any type much. I have been reading the primal diet book, lots of interesting reciepes.
Kathy have a good day and thanks for the goodie.

Off to see my doctor today. He has my A1C numbers, which are a little high, 7.3

I've been eating low carb, and measuring my blood sugar regularly, so I know there were no bad spikes like there used to be when I ate anything but pure sugar and relied on medication to save me from potatoes and other non sweet carbs (I just didn't know what was driving my blood sugar up).

In the last 2 days I've stayed away from Atkins bars. I was eating one or two a day as my treat. I was hoping they were right about their carb science, but the simple carb numbers of about 18 per bar seem true, not the contrived number that is incredibly low, like "2 Atkins net carbs".

The "net" result is that my fasting blood sugar is down from around 7 to 5.3 by going from about 40 grams of carbs a day to about 20.

James

p.s. I want to point out that I'm managing my diabetes (type-2) with diet alone.

Hello All,

Sorry for MIA for a while. I had something that needed doing and I didn't have enough time to do everything in a day.

Kathy, I hope that all is going good for you. Glad that you are having a lazy day. Have to take them when you can. Thank you so much for all of the wonderful messages that you leave for me on my Sparkpage. I really do appreciate them a lot. They are like a motivator when I see them.

I put up a blog the other day explaining what has been going on with me. There is just so many hours in a day. If you have a lot of things to get done, then you have to have a schedule on how you are going to do everything. Sometimes it just doesn't work though.

James, Keep up the good work. You will get there, but you have to stay focused on the issues. Hope you have it easier soon. I am very sorry to hear that your A1c was 7.3. Guess we are in the same boat. My A1c was the exact thing, 7.3. I am not very happy about it and I am sure neither are you. I guess we will have to work harder to get it back down to a good number.

Kat, glad to hear that you had a nice meal planed for your husbands birthday. I hope that he enjoyed it as much as you thought he would. Hope that you are getting plenty of rest and going at a good pace. Also, congratulations on losing the 2 pounds. Keep up the good work. I know how hard it is to get there.

Hope everyone is staying warm and safe. Winter is finally here.

We just got a foot or more snow dumped on us during the night. Our temps are staying very cold as well. I guess all we can do is to try and deal with it.

Best wishes to you all.

Hope that the Christmas season is going well with everyone. Don't get all wound up in trying to do too many things. Take some ME time and then start doing things again. I know that it will help a lot.

Take care James, also don't forget the water. I know you probably remember it but its such a simple thing to do.
Morning, I was on call last night but luckily didn't get called in, so this morning has been a lazy day so far. My hubbies birthday is today so I am planning a special meal for him. emoticon One that I can eat too. He loves turkey so I am going to base it around that. Wonder if I can find a low calorie pumpkin custard for dessert? Well I better get rolling, have a great day everyone and don't forget the exercise. emoticon

James, as I stated in our other team, 20 grams a day should lower your a1c back down. I personally am still on meds. Metformin and Levemir insulin once a day (I just lowered my insulin again last night)

don't let your desire to remain drug free hurt your long term health....have another a1c done in three months and see where you are...being diabetes meds free is a fantastic goal but not if you lose your feet because of it....please stay on top of this.

I just got my hemoglobin A1C. A sort of 3 month average of ones blood sugar

Between 4% and 5.6% - the person is healthy and at minimum risk of diabetes
Between 5.7% and 6.4% - the person has a higher risk of diabetes
6.5% or more - the person has diabetes

Mine was 7.3

I don't know exactly what it was a year ago, but it was lower. I don't want any diabetes meds, and I know the "Ideal Protein diet was about 20 grams of carbs a day. I know I've been eating more than that because a single Atkins bar, which I love, is just under 20, and I have other things with carbs, during the day. Like my tea, I have a packet of "equal" sweetener in my tea. That is about a gram of carbs.

Every gram adds up quickly. It's time to drop to 20 grams a day.

you're welcome Kat. It is a lot to take in at once....don't drive yourself to distraction trying to take it all in at once... we are all just eager to get you healthy and have a tendency to share everything at once! LOL

It took us a long time to learn how to control our diabetes and for me even longer to actually put it into action. just start slow and ask all the questions you want and we will be here for you

Maltodextrin itself is rather tasteless, but it is still a carbohydrate that is digestible, and it impacts blood sugar.

Sucralose is an arrangement of the same molecules as sugar. Sugar is a rather complicated molecule and has a "right handed" orientation, which matches the rest of the right handed orientation of our bio-chemistry here on earth.

Curiously Sucralose is manufactured, it does not occur in nature. Molecularly it is a mirror image of sugar. Same molecules, but "left handed" orientation on them. It still tastes sweet, but has the wrong handedness to be digestible.

I think that is cool. I'm just sorry they bulk up the powdered version with maltodextrin. I made muffins with powdered Splenda and gave them to a friend to eat. She got visibly upset after eating one when I told her that I had used Splenda. I think it was a philosophical objection to left handed biochemistry in a right handed world and being manufactured, not found in nature, with possible negative effects.

Me? I love Sucralose itself.

I didn't know that about Splenda, I have never seen it in liquid form. I mainly got it because it said sucralose and it tasted better than some of the other substitutes.

KATTREE,

Sucralose, the supposed main ingredient in powdered Splenda is OK. WILDKAT gets it in a liquid and it doesn't impact her blood sugar. It probably wouldn't impact mine either, but I haven't seen it in that form where I live.

I've seen it in powdered form only, at a number of stores. It says it "measures like sugar". Well duh, the powdered form is mostly maltodextrin, a kind of sugar. The important ingredient, Sucralose is almost lost in that form.

Wish I could find the liquid form.

While I do agree that powdered Splenda is not truthful in its amount of calories and carbs...and it's not the greatest for a low carb diet. I have found that it does not raise my blood sugar. I think that is another one of those instances where we are all different. I do use liquid splenda most of the time except for my pies..I've found that the liquid just doesn't work that well for pies.
the liquid splenda is hard to find, I get mine at Food City in the food city store brand.

now the bananas are big no no for me...as is all fruit.. I simply don't eat it anymore since becoming diabetic.

KATTREE,
Splenda? While Sucralose itself is fine for diabetics, powdered Splenda is mixed with maltodextrin. About 90% maltodextrin. I've done experiments on myself with my glucose meter. I might as well have ingested regular white sugar. Careful there.

Bananas are also quite bad. I've done experiments on myself there too. I suggest you do the same measure your blood sugar on an empty stomach. Eat a banana, or drink a glass of water with say 4 heaping tablespoons of powdered Splenda. Measure every 15 minutes for the next hour.

It will convince you to stay away from them. Sad but true.

Powdered Splenda uses a legislative loophole to claim 0 calories. Look at the serving size, 0.9 grams. Federal regulations allow you to ignore anything in a serving that is less than 1 gram. The regulation was meant for a can of soup or something with hundreds of grams.

Everyone is different, fruit doesn't seem to affect my blood sugar except watermelon. I can't seem to look at wheat, rice or potatoes with out a sky rocket attached to the blood sugar. I had James pancakes again this morning had it with whip cream like he suggested. I am going to have to find some syrup that I can use.
The skies are clear here and I plan to go for a walk soon. Take care of yourselves and try to stay warm.

We are having another ice storm. My internet has been out twice so far….it is supposed to clear up later today. I hope so.

Hope you all are having an excellent Tuesday and are safe and warm wherever you are.

That sounds good, I have a large bag of strawberries I froze last summer to use this winter, might try a little with my peanut butter.

Morning, I had oatmeal this morning but left off the bananna. I really love fruit but decided that I shouldn't have a bannana everday. I am not going to give up fruit but I will try to rearrange when and how I eat it.. Oh James the strawberry Jam I had was actually frozen strawberrys that I had mashed up and put splenda on them prior to freezing them.

Subject: fighting for every gram

Hi KATTREE,
to keep off of metformin, as I've done for about 19 months now after 9 years on the stuff, I fight for, or rather against every gram of carbs. Some are hard to avoid, like the few that come in cauliflower. Jam on your pancakes? Sorry to be so hard nosed.

Might I suggest whipped cream sweetened with some drops of liquid stevia?

Subject: not the real thing

KATTREE,
I have to agree, the whey protein pancakes are not exactly like wheat based ones, but pretty close. When you know what they are and are carefully tasting there is a subtle difference.

But if you feed them to an unsuspecting mate they will probably eat them and not notice the difference. However, in my mind eating low carb is about avoiding the carbs, yet having a range of things that keeps you happy rather than feeling deprived. One can't make low carb things exactly like their high carb counterparts, but close is really good enough.

My "bread" made from protein powder is even less like wheat based bread, rather dry. But it makes the layers for my sandwich, and that is better than no sandwich.

WILDKAT,
On its own plain Greek yogurt is not all that great, about the same as other plain yogurts.

But once you add chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry flavoured whey protein it is a different thing. It becomes, in my mind at least, a sweet creamy dessert.

Good Morning!

And it is an EARLY morning! I’ve been up a couple of hours…got my workout in. We lost power due to the ice storm for 4 hours last night so when I woke up early I thought I’d better go ahead and get some Sparking done in case it goes out again!

I hope you all have a great start to your week!

(James - you're making me hungry! LOL - except for the greek yogurt - don't like the greek stuff)

Bedtime snacks that won't raise your blood sugar very much at all because they are low carb

1. Macademia nuts (6% digestible carbs, 76% fat, 8% protein, 10% mystery stuff)
2. Cheddar cheese (1% digestible carbs, 33% fat, 25% protein, 41% other)
3. Greek yogurt and chocolate whey protein powder (3% digestible carbs, 0% fat, 20% protein)

I had them all this evening.

I like riding my exercise bike, I read a book while doing it some days and others I do HIIT. It is really cold here this week but I still went out for my walk just did not enjoy it and could not wait until I got home. Tomorrow I am riding my exercise bike.

Kat, I do chair aerobics and I have a pedal exerciser (like an exercise bike but no seat - you sit in a chair to use it) I walk in place if I can't get outside to walk.
