Food exchanges is not as difficult as you think. Food exchanges is a very basic diet concept that is used for many disease related diets and not just diabetes. The ADA just happens to have good published information on it. The number of exchanges in your diet plan is an individual number based upon your doctors evaluation of your medical needs. Food exchanges is based on the number of grams in a serving(or exchange) for protein, fat, and carbohydrates. Some also include sodium exchanges if having problems with hypertension. When you know how many grams are in a serving or exchange then you can use the nutrition label to assist you in calculating the number of exchanges for packaged or compound items. Many products have food exchanges listed right on the label.

My doctor has put me on a diet where I need to track my food exchanges. It is really difficult. I feel like I cannot eat any "complex" foods because I might not know exactly how to count them.

I should have prefaced by saying that I am not diabetic - but the booklet they gave me about the food exchange tracking is from the ADA, so I think that this is somewhat of a diabetic diet.

Any help or resources would be appreciated.

Thanks.
