My surgery is back on for Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. I'm going to have an exploratory laporascopy (sp?). The incision will run from just under the rib cage to just above the pubic bone. I will be in the hospital from 5 to 7 days.

I'd really appreciate your prayers. There is risk of infection with this surgery. Other than that the only other thing I will have to deal with is post-op pain. Thanks for your support. Hopefully this will all be a bad memory soon.

Thanks,
Lynda

Thanks, Lucky, for the info and the coupon. I am blessed to have developed the impaction. I was scheduled for surgery on Friday. If the pain had not become unbearable, I would have had the surgery and the surgeon would have cut for no reason, because the obstruction has either resolved itself or was hiding on x-ray behind the full colon. Either way, I was blessed. Thanks again for the support and prayers and info.

I am SO HAPPY to hear that you're not going to need surgery! That's wonderful news!

Miralax is terrific. My GI doc also recommended it for me since fiber is not my friend. Between the GP and IBS, Miralax has helped so much! I think you'll like it. Here's some info and a coupon from Miralax:

Hi gang! Would you believe, I'm home. The obstruction has worked itself out. The reason I am in so much pain is that my colon is completely impacted. That can be treated at home with laxatives and enemas. It happened because on the gastroparesis diet I'm not allowed to have any fiber. I am one very happy camper! By Sunday I should have lost about 10 pounds (I've already lost 3 with just 2 Fleets enemas) and then I start a regimen of Miralax every day. That's not considered fiber. Maybe I can avoid anymore obstructions and impactions in the future. I sure hope so because the pain is unreal!

Thanks for all of your support and prayers while I have moaned and groaned for the past several weeks.

Lynda,

Thanks for keeping us posted! I hope and pray everything works out alright. I would think that the quicker this could be taken care of the more peace of mind you would have.

This morning, while at work, I found out that my surgeon was working in the ER. I went around to see him and to explain what's been going on and to say that I didn't think that I could hold on for another week. He told me to be in the ER tomorrow morning. They are going to hydrate me and do x-rays. The surgery will most likely be either tomorrow or Saturday. I'll keep you posted through Dorene. Thanks for all of your support and prayers. They really mean a lot.

Lynda,
I will pray for you everyday! I will pray that your body can make it until the surgeon can remove the adhesions and get you fixed up. I'm also going to continue thinking in a positive manner that you'll get quickly through this trying time with a minimum of pain, and have the right doctor at the right time doing the right surgery. I'll be praying for a positive outcome!

I'm glad you know what to look for. Being hypervigilant is exactly how you must treat the symptoms, and I'm glad you're fully informed as to what could happen. It's important to know all of this before you have the surgery.

You sound like me, like we've both got a belly full of adhesions from previous surgeries. I had a lot of mine removed about 10 years ago when I had an emergency radical hysterectomy and the GYN found a bowel obstruction just waiting to happen. The adhesions are back in full force, but the doctors don't want to remove them because apparently they just continue to grow back.

Do you have someone who can help you while you are recuperating from surgery? I know your dear husband has his own set of issues he deals with and I hope he's doing better these days. Will your insurance allow a nurse to stay with you for a while at home? I hope there is something in place to help you after the surgery.

Please come back to the thread whenever you want. We're here for you - to listen, support, pray, encourage, and do whatever we can for you and your DH.

Many hugs and prayers coming your way,
Lucky

OK, I'll jump in here for both prayer and support. At the end of March into the first of April I was hospitalized for a week for a bowel obstruction. When I was discharged I knew I was going to eventually need some serious surgery. I thought that would be way down the road. The symptoms have been roaring their ugly heads and the later has become very soon. The surgery will entail cleaning out my abdomen of all previous scar tissue and adhesions and then resecting the colon. This is going to be tough surgery and a tougher recovery period than I'm used having. This will NOT affect my GP in any way, or so I'm told. We'll see! My surgery is scheduled for June 4th if I can hold out that long, I asked for this week,, my surgeon is out of town next week and the earliest he can schedule me the following week was Friday the 4th. This all depends on whether or not the "belly becomes hot" as he put it. Then it's emergency surgery and we pray that I don't wind up with a colostomy, an ileosotomy, or die. I do know what to watch for and trust me, Iam being hypervigilant! Just please pray that I can hang on until the 4th.

Whoa! This month is almost gone! Another chunk of time that slipped away.

I'm not sure how many team members are reading this, but I've become aware that we have quiet a few team members who could use some prayers and/or positive thoughts sent out. Please, never hesitate to ask for prayers/positive thoughts, or come to the team and vent out your frustrations, or even ask if what you're experiencing is something that one of us has also had and how we dealt with it.

Support, understanding, and even researching the internet, and asking questions during the next GI doc visit, is a big part of what this team is about. I really believe there is strength in numbers, and together we can help each other.

Sending you all hugs, positive thoughts and prayers,
Lucky

Tympani!

How are you doing? How's your GP?

I've been incredibly busy getting ready for my office's peak season. Busy getting ready to be busier! Stressful but the new dosage and instructions for the Domperidone have made me feel a lot better lately. I've been taking it an hour before meals, which takes a lot of planning in advance, but it's working better than 30 minutes before meals. Apparently it takes me a bit longer to get it to dissolve and into my bloodstream.

I read your latest blog and left you a message. Let me know if I can help you further.

BTW: love your hair!!!

Hugs,
Lucky

Went to my GI doc and am still on domperidone, but with a few changes on dosing. Seems to be working better! Still unable to digest anything new, and everything I "thought" I was digesting wasn't. I'm hopeful that the readjustment will help with that.

How's everyone else?

Hugs,
Lucky

Hi Lynda,

I did know that having an underactive thyroid can make GP symptoms worse, and have heard that an overactive thyroid can do the same.

I've heard various percentages used, but it appears up to as many as 30 percent of GPers have it.

According to the National Digestive Diseases Clearing-house (with the NIH), some other causes of gastroparesis are:

* surgery on the stomach or vagus nerve
* viral infections
* anorexia nervosa or bulimia
* medications—anticholinergics and narcotics—that slow contractions in the intestine
* gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
* smooth muscle disorders, such as amyloidosis and scleroderma
* nervous system diseases, including abdominal migraine and Parkinson’s disease
* metabolic disorders, including hypothyroidism

Thanks for mentioning this Lynda! You're always so helpful!

Just a thought -- did you know that hypothyroidism can cause gp and a simple pill call synthroid can do a lot to alleviate the symptoms. Have you had your thyroid checked lately? I did and unfortunately it is just fine. Oh well, back to the drawing board as to what caused my gp.
