Good to hear from you!!

Smoothies can be more nutritious than a lot of people think. Are you able to tolerate yogurt? Greek yogurt is even better for you if you can do that.

C'mon over to the February: Conversation Hearts chat thread. I almost missed your post!

Hi Lynda,

I too am on basically a liquid diet..and do few solids and limit myself to what I think I can tolerate.

I have lost about 16lbs since I was diagnosed in November. I wanted to loose the few extra LBS...but if I am not careful I will loose too much. I cosume alot of smoothies. I am on a gluten free & dairy free diet as well..which can make it quite difficult sometimes. I try and consume at least 2 smoothies that are high cardb and high protein..I have found the Bolthouse Brand -Purely Chocolate..is fabulous alone or even blended with a frozen banana( it is high in protein). I also eat grits, mashed potatoes...things like that to help.

But smoothies consume alot of my diet lately. And i try to incorporate as many fresh fruits and veggies as i can. in afternoon i always have a spinach smoothie( i know ur thinking...ewww) but its actually pretty good and you cant taste the spinach. Then i have an all fruit smoothie in the AM. and have soups and things like that in between.

Sometimes you get in a rut food wise and eat same things all the time..so i am always trying to find something new or a new smoothie recipe..or SOMETHING TO MAKE ME FEEL MORE NORMAL! lol

Lynda,

That IS a lot of weight to lose in that amount of time. Seems like a lot of GPers go through this phase at least once. I did and it was frightening, although I liked dropping 110 pounds in about 4 months time because it was nice to be "skinny" after weight 250 pounds.

But, you might want to ask your GI doctor what's a good supplement for you to take in order to keep some weight on you. I'm not having trouble with weight because most of what I eat are carbs (bread, potatoes, rice, beans, corn - the mainstays of my diet, day in and day out). But there might be something healthier and some better solutions for you. I hope you find it and that things get better for you. If I find anything on the internet, I'll be sure to let you know.

If anyone has some suggestions, please share them with Lynda.

Today is bringing a major ice storm to central Arkansas so I took the day off and didn't go to the hospital to work. I've done a lot of reading and laundry because so far we haven't lost our power. The precipitation is supposed to last until tomorrow morning. Please pray that it doesn't get too bad.

I lost another 5 pounds this week. While I know that is the goal of SparkPeople, it is not my goal anymore. I need to gain approximately 15 to 20 pounds back, but it is so difficult with gp and the diet that I'm on. I've had a major UTI this week and have felt rather crummy. I'm on Cipro twice a day. This affects my appetite and my food absorbtion, so that doesn't help. I've now lost a total of 80 pounds since joining SparkPeople a year ago, but 55 of that has been since I developed gp in August. That's a bit much, a bit fast. Any suggestions for a diabetic with gp who is on basically a liquid diet? HELP!! Thanks.

Hi Judy,

I think you're doing the right thing by getting the gastric empty study done. At least you'll know one way or the other.

The only thing that helps me with nausea is Tigan. I talked to some of the others here about it and I'm still taking it three times a day, but can take it a fourth time if necessary. If anything has the potential to make a person drowsy, then I usually feel it, but this one hasn't. Then again I've been taking this one for a while now, so I'm not sure if I've built up a tolerance for it or not. It's still effective, but I don't remember it making me drowsy. I do remember taking dramamine and sleeping for more than 8 hours after taking just half of one.

Tigan is also available in a generic form so it's not as pricey. Your pharmacist might allow you to get just half a prescription if you just wanted to try it.

Let us know how you're doing and what the gastric empty study finds. I wish they could find that you don't have GP and that there's something other than Reglan to help. Eternal optimist - that's me! LOL

There is a non-drowsy anti-nausea medicine out there. It's what I use. It's relatively new and it's used for chemotherapy patients. It's a transdermal patch called Sancuso. It is the ONLY thing that worked for me and we tried the entired arsenal of anti-emetics. Insurance tends to balk at it though. Tri-care makes me get a new script each week and pay the maximum co-pay of $22. I'm not complaining, just stating a fact. That's the only medication that I take that they make me do that for. One patch lasts for a week. It's great, though. As far as the gastric emptying scan, I would definitely have it to determine if you really have gp and not something else. It is probably the easiest test that I have ever had, so go for it.

Best wishes, to you Judy_Lynn

Lucky, good to hear you are feeling better. That sounds like a nasty fall. Sorry to hear you had to let someone go. That would suck. My DH has to do that in his job, and it is so hard on him. Keep us updated on the Domperidone, I am very interested to hear how it works for you.

Diva, what kind of job do you have?

I can't believe how susceptible my GP is to stress. If it weren't for that, I think I could manage it a lot better. For example, on Christmas Eve I was supposed to drive to another town two hours away to pick up our son from the airport. Just that small amount of stress set it off. I couldn't do it. I had to phone DH to get off work to drive us. I had to take a Gravol (dramamine) and sleep in the car all the way there. It makes me very drowsy.

I made an appt with my doctor to discuss three things to do with GP. Whether I should get off the Reglan and try something else, getting the gastric emptying study, and whether there is a non-drowsy anti-nausea medicine I could switch to.

I was diagnosed just on the basis that the Reglan helped, so I want the gastric emptying study to be certain it isn't something else.

So, I feel positive for taking this step. I am very much a wait & see gal. We'll see if she notices I have lost weight (46 pounds now).

Have a great evening everyone.

Thanks, and I am feeling better. Can't put all my weight on the ankle, but when I woke up this morning the pain in my hip and knee was gone. I have this little routine of standing until I start to feel achy and then sitting until I feel achy. I'm probably getting more exercise this way! LOL

My domperidone dosage was increased lately. No side effects other than some mild itching which half a Benadryl takes away. Still feels too early to try anything like a salad, which sounds soooooo good, but I know better.

I understand the stress that your job can bring. Mine has its ups and downs, and a big downer was having to let someone go last week because he couldn't be trained. Couldn't even remember his training. I kept hoping he would catch on, but after 4 months he still couldn't do the most basic things. So I've advertised the position and should be interviewing soon. You probably have a lot more stress and a lot more often. It amazes me how stress and the GP get worse - like almost overnight (for me anyway). I'll be praying for ya'! Hope your job and GP calm down soon!

Hugs,
Lucky

Happy Sunday everyone!

I can hardly believe that another week is upon us.

Yesterday I sprained my ankle a good one. I had on shoes I haven't worn in a while and we have a gravel drive-way. Enough said, I guess, I took most of the impact on my left hip which seems OK. Ankle had lots of RICE last night and actually feels pretty good right now.

Hope everyone has a great day!!

Happy New Year, everyone!
I hope you all are doing well and the new year is starting off great. I have been computer-less for a while and just got a new one today. It was good to see all of the new members that have joined our group and those that have been with us for a while.

Have a great week and please let me know if there's anything that I can do for you. Keep up the great work...each and every one of you.

Peace,

Hi everyone!

Sorry I haven't been posting as often as I want to be. Work is hectic enough and things at home are crazy as well. I guess you all heard about the freezing weather and even some snow that we got here in Florida. Well, after the thaw began, our water pipes under the house burst. We have to wait until Monday to get them fixed.

I was going through some gastroparesis sites and found this article about Reglan. Judy, this one is really easy to understand and you can print it out for your doctor to read.

www.redorbit.com/news/health/1646424

da_requires_black_box_warning_for_heR>artburn_drug/index.html

I hope you can click on it and the article opens, instead of having to cut and paste it.

I'll check back in this evening!

Hugs,
Lucky

Hi Lucky,

My GP was the one who prescribed the Reglan and she didn't say anything about side-effects. I ahve only seen an Internist once for a quick follow-up to my gastroscopy. I actually don't get the feeling my GP is very familiar with gastroparesis. When I told her about how the littlest bit of stress sets it off she seemd a bit surprised. Now I find out that is common. I wish I had a doc that understood it better. Maybe I should try to get back in to see the Internist. I think I need a referral though.

I have cut back on the Reglan dosage and am only taking it twice a day instead of four times.

Anyway, how are you feeling? Did you get the kidney infection cleared up?

Hi Judy!
Good to hear from you!

The doc said he hopes to avoid any possible side effects but taking it really slow. I'm on a lot of different medications and am always concerned about any side effects or something new possibly negating the effects of whatever else I'm taking.

He started me off on the lowest dose for a little over three months and while I didn't have any side effects or could tell that anything was interacting with my other meds, I also didn't feel any benefit from the low dose. It was low enough to basically just keep it in my blood stream so when I took a higher dose there wouldn't be any sides.

If you're interested, and maybe you've already done this, but check out the links we've got on domperidone. Reglan...I'm seeing those lawyers on TV offering their services for people who have had some of those awful irreversible side effects. You might even want to Google "Tardive dyskinesia" if you haven't already. I don't like to scare people about possible side effects of their meds, but these don't go away even if you stop taking Reglan.

I know this isn't an easy decision because for some people it really helps with their GP. I do think it's important for people to be informed though. My GI doc did a really good job of explaining it to me and I gladly got off the Reglan that day. I hope all docs are informing their patients of the possible side effects, but I know that the first doctor who did prescribe it for me didn't.

Life's an adventure ... take it one step at a time and don't underestimate yourself! You're capable of more than you think you are! How do I know this? You're still here aren't you? That means you haven't given up!

Lucky, you are sure right, a little stress can make my GP a lot worse. How is the increase in medication working? Just curious as to why your doc is using a graduated approach? How well does the Domperidone work? I am considering talking to my doc about a change from the Reglan. I am nervous to go off it because it does work well for me, but you guys have also made me nervous to stay on it.

Lynda, Glad you were able to change your appointment if you weren't feeling up to it.

Lynda,
You're no wimp, everyone needs some time off and a little stress can make GP worse too.

Still hoping the medicine makes a difference but I'm guessing it's too early.

Hope you feel better soon!

I rescheduled my GI appointment until the 26th. I was suddenly feeling exhausted and couldn't face a 50 mile round trip drive into Little Rock, plus the wait in the doctor's office. I guess I'm a wimp.

Talk to you all later.

Good luck at the doctor's tomorrow! Hope you get good news!

It's pretty chilly here in Gainesville also. It was 19 degrees last night but no snow. The next town south of us, Ocala got snow though! Not much of it stuck and there might not have been enough to really measure, but they scrapped together enough to build a small snowman.

Started the increased dose of domperidone today. I'll let you know how it goes.

Hope everyone is staying warm and healthy!!!

Hugs,
Lucky

You can tell that it is frigid here in Arkansas (5 degrees when I went to church this morning) because last night I thought today was going to be Monday. Tomorrow, Monday, is when I actually se the GI doc. I'll let you know then.

Have a warm day.

I have gained 5 pounds in the past 2 weeks, but for me, right now, that's a good thing. That brings my total weight loss up to 75 pounds. I don't want to go below that again. I'd actually like to gain another 5. I see my GI doc tomorrow afternoon. I wonder what he'll say? I'll let you know after my appointment. Have a good evening and stay warm. It is positively frigid here in central Arkansas.

Well, no pound lost this week! Will have to work a little harder next week. Seems like everytime I get stressed my body doesn't want to let go of the weight.

Hope everyone is doing well, staying warm, and happy.

I'll be weighing in tomorrow and I sure hope I've lost a pound! We'll see!

Saw the GI doc today and got the new Rx for the domperidone. He thinks I'm ready for it. I'm kind of excited but nervous. I just wish the FDA would give their stamp of approval for it. It seems like there are a lot worse drugs that they approve of, why not this one? Oh, well, maybe one day there'll be an answer for that question.

How is everyone else doing?

Hugs,
Lucky

Lynda,
I'm so sorry to hear that your pup isn't doing very well. Losing a precious pet is as hard as losing a family member, especially if you think of them that way, and I sure do! You all are in my prayers and thoughts!

Hugs,
Lucky

Dear Lucky, I just read the comments you left on the photos on my SparkPage. They mean a lot. Thanks. The pup with the gorgeous eyes is very sick right now and we might lose him in the next week. It's really hard. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers.

Happy New Year! May 2010 be THE YEAR that we reach goals, make and support friends, get and stay healthy, and appreciate the abundance of blessings that we might not even see, but are right in front of us.

Hugs to all,
Lucky
