I am borderline, and keeping mine in check and having GP is no fun... I am sorry you are in the hospital. Hope you feel better soon. Since you are there, have your dr. write an order for you to meet with the dietitian in the facility. When i was recently hospitalized for my last attack with GP, i met with her on several occasions and we talked about carbs, vegetables, fiber, etc..She will be able to give you better suggestions. Hugs and warm wishes for a speedy recovery and peace within.

Anyone here have diabetes and GP? What do you eat??? I'm in the hospital for asthma and because of the high dose steroids I have steroid-induced diabetes. It goes away when I get off the steroids (in 6-8 weeks) but in the meantime they put me on a low/no-carb diet. I'm pretty much eating eggs, meat, and vegetables 3 meals a day and my stomach is killing me. I don't know what else to try that isn't carbs! Suggestions?

I agree with Hokie, we need transplants, they can transplant everything else, so why not that?!?! Oh Hokie, i completely understnad about the hypoglycemia thing.. Did yours just start? I have noticed since this last hospital stay and my GERD AND GP acting up, it has become A LOT harder to stabilize my blood sugars, and then before you know it, my group will have me being type 90 diabetic and doing lord knows what to stabilize it all... I love mt gastro doc, he is THE BEST, but the rest of that group with the exception o f one, i don't care for. Sad to say, that they just don't listen half the time and it is you that knows what is going on 100% of the time.
That makes me worry about takind amox anymore, i ahve to take it before i go to the dentist as well, because i have MVP and they like you to take a dose of antibiotics before you have any work done, to prevent you from getting an infection, and you wound up with one!! Strange how some medicines work.
Hope everyone is haveing a happy day, and hugs, prayers and best wishes to you all!! emoticon

Eileen,
Thanks for asking about my mother-in-law, she's considered terminal but responding to chemo and radiation right now and things are looking up a little bit for her.
I appreciate everyone's prayers...so much to take to the Lord, isn't there?
Lucky, C. difficile put me in the hospital for 12 days! I've never been that sick in my life! I also had pancreatitis.
Cleveland Clinic seems to think all my digestive problems are as a result of the horrible c. diff infection I had. And they told me they were 99% sure that a small round of Amoxicillin to prepare me for a dental visit is what caused me to get it. That's scary!
However, since I had it I have two friends who have had family members that have died from it. Both of them suffered paralysis of muscles too before they died. I consider myself fortunate to be living--even with GP and loss of muscle strength.
I don't go one day without strong probiotics! Just insurance from it ever happening again!

Tami

I'm right there with you on the GERD lately, Lucky. We have no idea why; I haven't had much actual acid reflux since childhood. They put me on AcipHex and liquid meals for 2 weeks then they'll rescope and see what's going on. The worse my GP and GERD get the worse my hypoglycemia gets though so they're putting in a constant glucose monitor to keep a better eye on it, especially at night so I won't have to keep waking up to check it manually. The GP domino effect is in full force...

When are they going to start stomach transplants for GP patients??? LOL

Tami,
Please know we will be praying for your daughter and your entire family. Lucky, i am glad to see that you are getting some relief from your reflux. Here lately, since this last trip to the hospital, mine has gotten so much WORSE!! Put me on Aciphex and protonix, to see which is gonna work, and suggested that i know eat a low fat, low fiber diet, eating PERIOD would be good. lol lol... Tami, thatnks for the advice on the books, i think i am going to give it a whirl as well, just as you said, next piece of advice, may do the trick.
Please keep us posted on how your daughter is doing. How is the mother in law? Hope everyone has a happy day..

Tami,

I'm sorry your daughter isn't any better. I'll be praying that the doctors at the Cleveland Clinic can help her.

Thanks for passing along the name of Jordan Rubin's book. I'll have to see if I can get it.

You mentioned C. difficile, one of my co-workers, a wonderful 70-year-old lady, got it and really had trouble getting thru it. I'm glad she managed to find a doctor who knew how to help. We researched it on the internet and it helped her understand more about it. She swears the probiotics she got from a health food store helped her more than the meds. I'm just happy she's OK again.

My reflux is starting to get better! But the GP is still the same. Some relief is better than none though.

Hugs,
Lucky

Lucky,
No, my daughter is not better and has her neurologist stumped so they're sending her to Cleveland Clinic this month.
When you're checking out Jordan Rubin...I read the Maker's Diet and I'd tried most of it, but found another book he co-authored called "Restoring Your Digestive Health" and that's the one that has really been a help to me.
It's very strict at the beginning, but within a month my pain level was down from about an 8 to a 1-3.
My gastroparesis was found after I had a severe C. diff infection. I have eosinophils in my large and small bowel that are supposed to be the source of my intense pain. I feel I could live with the tummy not working but pain is another story!
I don't have GERD, fortunately or reflux.
I do know that gastroparesis is an illness few people know about or realize how dramatically it can change your life!
I'm always open to anyone's suggestions! The next one might be the one that helps! :)

Tami

Woo-hoo!!!!

Here we are! It's the last day of August! September is going to be great! Some (maybe only slightly) cooler temps, maybe some of you will be able to see leaves starting to turn color, hopefully less rain here in Florida, and less stress!!!

Hugs to everyone on this wonderful day!

Tami,
I read the Domperidone thread before I saw this one.

I'm really sorry to hear about your mother-in-law and your daughter. Is your daughter better now that the baby arrived? I hope so.

Haven't heard of Jordan Rubin; I'll have to do some googling. Your current diet sounds like mine: yogurt, Lactaid cottage cheese, and carbs like bread and soft-baked pretzels (the frozen kind that you can bake/microwave at home).

Do you also have GERD? I'm having unbelievable problems with the reflux and my GI doc said the GP is making it worse. Today I just got my Rx for 40 mg of Nexium twice a day. Wasn't able to pick it up until this evening so I'm hopeful it'll work in a few days.

It seems as I get older, it takes longer for me to recover from my GP mistakes, or when I have to take something else off the list of what I can eat. Work has been too hectic to try to eat 5-6 smaller meals.

Just thought I'd check in...we've had a wild summer with my husband's mother terminally ill with brain cancer and our daughter becoming paralyzed in the middle of her pregnancy and then having many complications at delivery...(whew, it looks even worse in print!)
Anyway, I was doing much, much better with my gastroparesis symptoms but that's by following Jordan Rubin's diet very closely.
While staying at my daughter's house (and tending five children!) I strayed from the diet and I'm still paying dearly.
Also, giving in to my love for fresh summer veggies and forgetting there's a price to pay!
So, I'm back to the special broth, yogurt and sourdough bread and although not well I am much better.
Thanks 1313 Lucky for checking up on me! Made my day!

I am here if ya need me. I went to Soy milk and did not see a difference. Taking this lactose thing seems to help a little. Good luck and keep me posted.

Thanks for the support! I really needed it, even though the GERD probably won't get any better. Haven't heard about the lactose thing before. I'm using the lactose-free milk and cottage cheese, but I'm not seeing or feeling any difference.

I need to double my efforts in losing weight and maybe that will help reduce it some at least.

Hope you have a great day!

I am sorry that you are having such a hard time with your reflux. I think that no matter what we eat, take, or try to do, even though you don't want to hear this, we will always have it... Mine has gotten significantly worse since this last episode. They told me to take a lactose inhibitor, that many things have lactose in them, and that is what is upsetting my balance, and causing alot of my reflux!! GO FIGURE!?!?!?!?!
Yeah,i know about that carb thing... Thanks for telling me about the philly's finest pretzels, they have been a saving grace to me here lately in eating as well. I know we all need to be healthy,( weight wise ) but sometimes, things can't be helped..

You get on here and vent anytime, that is what we are here for. Will send out many hugs and prayers for feeling better...

Anyone having any luck keeping their acid reflux at bay? I can't figure out why I have it, unless the radiation therapy I had triggered the excess acid. Does that make sense?

Because of the GP and GERD, I've given up coffee, tea, beer/wine/alcohol, chocolate, citrus, fried food ... everything that my GI docs have said causes acid reflux to get out of control.

The acid rises up even if I'm sitting down, and I'm vomiting up pure acid (sorry. TMI!). Docs did an endoscopy and the pH test, but I'm still waiting for my HMO to approve what my GI doc feels is an appropriate dose of PPI. And I'm on domperidone now. They're hoping that will help the acid calm down.

Sorry, I just had to vent I guess. I know there aren't any easy answers. I'm tired of eating nothing but carbs, and can't help but wonder what's going to happen...well, OK, I KNOW what's happening. My rear is getting wider! Losing weight has really been hard this summer. My thyroid is underactive again too. What a mess!

I just hope everyone else is doing better! This is no joy ride.

Hugs,
Lucky

Lucky,
Thank you so much for the well wishes and support, it means alot to me. Yes, my family was pretty shaken up, because this trip was REALLY BAD!! Have not had an attack like this EVER..My first bout only resulted in an overnight stay and not much else. I did leave a little early from work, but was able to keep my lunch down for a whole hour!! woo hoo!!! ugh!!! I am not sure what is going to happen, just trying to keep my fanny out of the hospital again.

Yep, carbing it and liquifying it for now, my belly is not cut out for this. Went to Wal-Mart yesterday, to get my medicine and when i hit the door, ours has a McDonalds, and man those fries smelt SOOO good, i wanted one sooo bad!!!! Even a bite out of those would have sent me over the edge.

Yes, please keep her at bay, we need the rain, but not that much!! lol lol..

Will keep you posted, i am actually going to take a nap now and gear up for later. Thanks again for the thoughts and well wishes.. MANY HUGS!!!

Eileen,
I had a feeling you were in the hospital. I hadn't heard from you in quite a while and had definitely started to worry. What an ordeal you've been through! I can't believe you went to work! I hope you cut the day short and went home to rest.

I'll be praying that you'll soon start to feeling better and get your strength back. Was it the stress that got your GP acting so bad? I'm so sorry to hear about the hospital stay. It sounds awful and I bet your family was plenty scared.

Yes, carbs, lovely carbs. Lately all I want are those soft-baked pretzels you can get in the frozen food section (Philly's Best). Just 55 seconds on level 8 and they come out smelling like fresh baked bread and taste good. They're bland and I can't handle dipping them into anything right now. If I wasn't eating them, I'd never go over 750 calories a day.

Losing weight at this point should be secondary. You need your rest and for your tummy to calm down. Please let me know if I can do anything, like keeping Hurricane Claudette from battering you with wind and rain. A friend in Pensacola said the rain flooded his trailer and the wind tore his roof off. Thankfully his mom was living in a safer area and he can stay with her for as long as needed.

I'm at work now so I better scoot. Will be back on after work. I'm glad you're out of the hospital! I sure hope things calm down really soon!

Hugs,
Lucky

Good morning ladies..
This is going to be a little long, so bear with me..
I have not posted because i have been in the hospital for a week thanks to my lovely GP!!! It all started on Tuesday the 4th, got to feeling bad, but shrugged it off to stress, well, couldn't keep anything down, typical drill, and friday when i went to the dr. he immediately put me in the hospital. NO going home to get my jamas, NOTHING!! Got to the hospital, got 2 bolus bags of I.V. fluids, and pain and nausea meds. I couldn't keep liquids down.Well, my i.v.s kept blowing in my arm because my veins kept collapsing, and i also got shots in my stomach to keep me from getting blood clots in my legs from being in bed so much. Talk about adding insult to injury!! Not only did my stomach hurt to begin with, i then got the shots as well!!! Well, he finally released me on the 14th and i went to work today, i am here now. Not sure how long i will be here. I am still having a hard time keeping anything down. Please keep me in your prayers that this will clear up before long and even out.
Like Lucky, i find myself only able to hold down carbs, bread, things like that. It seems to absorb all the acid in my stomach. Now carbs are not the best when you are trying to lose weight, but at this point, that as sad as it sounds, is not a priority for me, until i can get myself back on track.
Hope that everyone else is doing well, and i am trying to catch up on all my emails. Many hugs!!

Eileen

That can really be a tough call. Usually for me though it's how empty my stomach feels after I've lost whatever I ate - and it can be hard to tell sometimes because I can lose stuff I ate 2-3 days before then.

If I think I'm going to keep it down, I count 100 percent, but if I'm tossing my cookies for days, then I don't even try to count whatever I ate.

Carbs! The majority of my diet is carbs. Right now I'm going through a soft pretzel phase. I found these frozen pretzels that you can nuke for about 45-60 seconds and they smell like fresh baked bread and taste divine. I'm addicted to the Philly's Finest Soft Pretzels. I don't put salt on them even though they come with those bigger granules you can sprinkle on them. And I don't dip 'em in anything either. They always feel so good on my stomach. That and hot tea (Earl Grey, Lemon Zinger, Raspberry Zinger) with a little honey.

It's good that you're getting exercise. And you're right! It's a great stress reliever. I'm going to be getting more exercise, and hopefully some strength training in once September hits and my schedule goes down to 40 hours a week. For now, walking everyday is about it.

LOL. Love the "round trip ticket." Haven't heard of it put that way yet! Funny!

One of my challenges actually seems to be eating enough even though I always though I was eating too much. I burn ~6000 calories at the gym every week so my spark-given calorie range is 1760-2120 which is a LOT of food for my stubborn stomach. I can't make myself work out less though, it relieves so much stress from school and work. My question though, is how do we count calories from food we don't hold down? Once my GP starts I actually find the best way to end a cycle (and prevent getting hypoglycemic) is to hold down carbs...so even if I feel like crap I keep trying carby things until I hold some down. Otherwise I can be sick for weeks...then dehydrated and admitted and you all know the drill. So do you just guess how much of what you had eaten was held in and how much had a round trip ticket? Or do you count it all as eaten since some is digested before the return trip anyways?

Eileen,

I'm so sorry you're feeling so awful! Do they know anything yet?

Never too much TMI! With our condition, I think we're all pretty familiar with what happens so you don't have to worry about TMI.

You were sick this morning but hadn't eaten anything since Tuesday morning? Is there a chance you've got bad reflux like I have? GP apparently makes reflux extremely severe. As if GP isn't enough! But not eating a little something for two days (Am I misunderstanding what happened?)can make the acid build and that alone can make anyone super sick. My acid is now so high, I'm taking 4 times the amount of PPIs that are typically prescribed. I pray that this isn't the same thing that's happening to you.

Try to stick with some bland carbs, like bread w/o butter, mashed potatoes w/o gravy (just thinkiing about that makes me feel bad), and maybe even some pudding, so your stomach doesn't stay empty and make you feel even worse. If you do have reflux, do you have PPIs for it? You might have to double the doses in order to get some relief from the acid, but ask your GI doc first.

I'll be praying for you and sending positive vibes, and thinking about you until you post again. I'm worried about you, and I know how frustrating this disease is, especially when you're feeling fine and then out of the blue, it strikes with a vengeance.

Please let us know how you're doing.

Big hugs,
Lucky

O.K. need to vent. Last night, well for the last 2 days, i have been feeling really really bad. Had the nausea, cramps, everything. WEll, i chalked it up to something else we ladies are " blessed " with!!! While sitting at work yesterday, i doubled over and then barely made it to the bathroom to be sick. The pain was INTENSE and there is no word for the nausea...I was in full blown relapse mode!!!!!! Oh my word, i wanted someone to kill me.
I have not had an episode like that in almost 8 months. I thought i was doing sooo good. WELL, the drs. office sent me straight back to the hospital to have a stat CT done on my belly and have bloodwork done. NO fun. I look like a junkie this morning, they had to stick me so much, usually i have good veins. Well, came home, took some Zofran for the nausea and went to bed. I am now awaiting tests results. Keep me in your prayers, and good thoughts...I greatly appreciate it. I HATE having this!!!!!!!!!!!! I have not had anything on my stomach since breakfast Tuesday morning, and it came back up!! Sorry, i know, TMI!! Thanks for listening!!
Eileen

I'll have more time, and probably energy, in September, but I know exercise is supposed to be good for stress and I'd rather try that than some of my previous attempts at dealing with stress (ahem! like over-eating and eating the wrong stuff! is this confession or what?! lol)

I'm just aiming to stay on track this month, especially after fall classes and teaching start up again!

Yes, for the month of August, I'm gonna take stress by the horns. DH has agreed to help me with grocery shopping, planning meals, making lunches, exercising and most importantly, helping me be accountable for what goes into my mouth.

I want and plan to lose 5 pounds this month. I can do it, I've done it before. I need to buckle down!
