Yesterday our monthly meeting hosted the "Eyes Wide Open" memorial that has been assembled by the American Friends Service Committee. I was very moved by the display which included prayer flags (one for each American soldier who has been killed in Iraq), combat boots (one pair for each Oregon soldier who has been killed in Iraq), hardhat (One for each Oregon contractor who has been killed in Iraq), and civilian shoes (empty pairs to represent a fraction of the Iraqi civilians who have died). My friend assembled a photo gallery that you can look at

(By the way, if the set link doesn't work, try copying and pasting it from this email into your browser's address bar.)

It was a quiet and respectful gathering. The park is big and a regular stream of visitors came throughout the day, so it never looked like a lot.

If you get a chance to see the memorial in person, I'd suggest you go experience it.
