Pilates is great also. The two have a lot of similar moves and stretches.

Just looking at these and they are almost all the same moves that I was taught in Yoga class, Some of which I just can not do. But the instructor was great and modified them so I could do them.

Pilates is doing wonder for my low back pain and neck stiffness. I love it so much that I am organizing a group for Pi-Yo at my work specifically for people with back/spine issues.

My doctor actually told me to take a low impact yoga class, I now use it in my daily routine and even my physical therapist encourages it. It has helped me to improve my flexibility but I still am very limited.

Iīm a huge fan of Yoga !!
Before i was properly diagnosed i had completely stopped it for nearly 10 years.
Since i got my diagnosis i started again. Today i believe - if hadnīt done yoga for sooo many years, iīd been completely stiff.

but...One of the problems is to find a yoga teacher that can teach you properly. Most of them are simply overwhelmed by teaching an AS-patient. Each one of us has special weaknesses - so you cant do a "one-fits-for -all" - class with AS-patients.

I tried out pilates too - i didnt like it. But thats my personal style ;-)

Iīve been lucky: the PT that leads our AS group is a yoga teacher too. She incorporates a lot of yoga asanas in our weekly sessions. But she never tells to those guys that its yoga *lol*
I wont tell them either *ggg*
Once a month i have a private class with her - so she can watch my mouvements and make corrections.
I do my yoga daily - even on bad days. Theres a theory that a flare can be evoked through stress, i use it to calm down. I do yoga adapted on my daily form - sometimes its only a tree for a few minutes. Or simply some minutes lying and breathing.
For those who want to try it out there are some poses that are very good for AS :

Be careful - donīt go to the limits - workout only in your comfort zone.

If you want to attend a class, donīt be shy and tell the teacher about AS. And donīt be shy to use cussions, blocks and bands to be more in comfort

I was wondering the same thing myself. I tried yoga a few times before and it seemed to irritate my back (which a yogi friend of mine said was because I have a week core) so I went to Pilates instead. I've been sticking to Pilates for 6 months straight now and I can really tell when I haven't gone because my back will ache!

Would Yoga be a good for AS since it involves stretching and breathing?
